Clear is a cut-rate service provider with serious reliability problems.
While there are random slowdowns and brief outages with Clear service, when it works, it works ok. The issue that really sticks a knife in a customer's back is the prolonged outages, which happen every couple or few months and can last from 24 hours to a week.
Like other vendors, Clear outsources as much as it can. Customer service is sourced to India, local infrastructure support is sourced, if my experience is typical, to pretty much anybody with a toolbox and a truck. As I write this, I am 72 hours into a complete outage, despite living two blocks from a Clear transmission point. Customer support, when they do acknowledge an outage, routinely predict a "10pm" fix. This weekend, I've heard that three times.
What distinguishes Clear from other providers is that they appear to have made the calculation that it is cheaper to rebate the minority of customers persistent enough to demand compensation or even lose one or two in the wake of an outage rather than pay some contractor overtime to actually fix something. How would that make you feel if you really, really needed to get something done?
The bottom line: if you cannot afford random, prolonged, and unannounced service cuts, avoid Clear like the customer service plague it truly is. read more
