I don't always get what I want the FIRST time, but that's because I walk into the store with odd adjectives...like "I need the thingy that covers that long pipe that wraps around a smaller pipe..." And every time, the pros at Clark-Devon Hardware figure out what I'm talking about. Then they ask "what size do you need?" And I say, "Oh, about two knuckles wide." Sometimes I have to go back for an exchange, because my knuckles are small and that throws sizing off. I needed a special paint and found it here. They are a ways from where I live so after calling and being assured they had what I needed, I set out. My experiences with other retailers made me apprehensive but when I got there, I was met by a sales person almost immediately who took me to the paint I needed, got it shaken, got a cart for me, and got me to the checkout. I live around the corner and have gone to this store so many times and each time I am so impressed and grateful for their customer service. However, I recently reached out to them to see if they might donate a bag of soil to the non profit I work for and they were anything but helpful, in fact, they were terribly rude and patronizing. This is one of the BEST mom-and-pop stores in Chicago. The selection is absolutely incredible... things you didn't even know existed and you will NOT find at the big stores. Not only that, but the staff goes out of their way to help you with your particular problem and make sure you're getting the right materials for the job. I have gone in several times, and the most recent was for a non-working switch. The sales guy actually took the time to test both the switch and the wire to figure out which needed replacement, then took me to get the right wire. $2 purchase and A-1 customer service! You'll never get that at Home Depot! read more

I love this place. I have this table from the 50s, and my husband was about ready to put it out in the alley. I love this table. It has benches that come down for eating. I've never seen anything like it actually. It was so old that I the metal pins that hold the benches in had bent. I brought it to Clark-Devon. We figured out a solution, and my table was fixed $20 and a few hours later!!! Why am I giving them a 4 then? Well, because I ordered some tile recently, and it came scratched. But, they reordered without issues. Otherwise, this place would get a huge 5. I think it's more expensive than Home Depot, but it has everything you need and smart, available, eager to help people who can come up with creative solutions (unlike Home Depot sometimes). read more

We recently bought a light fixture and were trying to install it. It required loosening the "strain relief" , but the directions did not say how. We were at our wits end trying to figure it out, so we took the fixture to Devon Hardware and showed it to Austin in the Lighting Department. He immediately realized that there was a very tiny set screw that needed to be loosened, and he found a small screwdriver in the Tool Department that we would need to use to loosen the set screw. Without him we would have been up the creek without a paddle. He was very pleasant and helpful. Although the screwdriver he found for us that we needed for the project was less than $3.00, he still took the time to help us. We will definitely give Devon Hardware our future business! read more

I went in today to look for a replacement fixture and was quickly assisted by Frank in the plumbing department. Instead of directing me to an aisle to pick something out myself, as would happen at a big box, he examined the fixture and told me I all I needed was a washer. He took the fixture, came back after a few minutes announcing, "I've fixed it for you." Excellent! All I paid for is the washer! While they could have made more money on this visit had I bought a whole new fixture, I will keep coming back to Clark-Devon Hardware to spend my money before I visit a big box store. Every time I've been in I've had great service. Frank was exceptionally helpful and deserves credit. read more

I used to really like this place. The guy with the baseball cap who works in the screw and nail section is great. He knows his stuff and is very helpful. However, many other staff really don't seem that interested in helping you. They walked right by me when I was standing at the return desk trying to return something. It took 10 minutes before someone asked if I needed help. They also don't seem to understand anything about trying to preserve the aesthetics or craftsmanship of a building when you ask for advice. I have an old 2 inch oak front door that must be at least 75 years old and they act like you can just drill new holes and fill large holes with wood putty and you wont notice any difference. One of their staff complains about his jobs there (which I shouldn't have to hear as a customer there.) I have also had problems where when I tried to return something the clerk didn't pay attention and charged me again for the same item! (Even after I had given him the receipt!!!) Many of them just don't seem to care about customer service. read more

being the first day of the month, i wondered if there would be a long line in the key department with two employees making keys and only one person in front of me. i figured i could slip in and make some extra car keys. well the first thing he asked me, does the key work well. since i generally keep the original car key at home, i kinda stumbled over my answer and said yes. so i did some other shopping and when i came back for my two spare keys, he was still working on them. the line waiting for locksmith service became quite long, but he continued to be focused on making the best keys possible. once made, he tested the keys in the driver and passenger doors as well as the ignition switch. before insertion he sprayed special lubrication into the locks and ignition switch. one key seemed off, so he went back to fine tune the key and returned outdoors again to retest the key. i'm sorry the hardware store lost money on my two keys but i shop there weekly and sometimes multiple times in a single day. all i can say is that manny who wears the blue vest is totally awesome. thank you thank you for giving us customers your best service. read more
