As she was grilling, I inspected the place. Super dark but standard for a bbq place I assume. Clean and well maintained. Generous servings and it was delicious!! CJ BBQ is located in a plaza off of Blossom Hill and is unassuming from the outside. The interior space is on the smaller side, with 3 tables that can seat around 4 people each. The lady who served me was pleasant and answered my questions thoroughly. Food: I got the pork and chicken with a side of garlic bread. The meat was tender and crispy on the outside. Like others have mentioned, the sauce is on the sweeter side, not as tangy as other places' might be. The garlic bread was ok, the crust was crispy but I would have preferred less garlic butter and more toasted on top. The food came out pretty quickly and packaged well. Cons: No public bathroom and no water available. They did have drinks available for purchase in the fridge though. Overall, a nice place to grab a bite to eat and I would stop by if I was in the area. An update: I came back since my boyfriend really wanted to try the food here. And this is what I learned: I'm addicted to their kimchi & combo sandwich. Or the kimchi combo sandwich. I actually like buying kimchi here when I want to make small batches of kimchi fried rice or kimchi stew. Everything, and I mean everything, is made to order. There are times where I'd call in for pick up and times I'd just sit around and wait. Honestly, I kind of prefer the waiting scene as of late. I'm tired from work, I want to go home, but I'm too tired for a grab&go. So sometimes it's nice to just digress a bit during the wait and have some lightweight conversation. Personally, I'm not one for the combo meals as much anymore as I can eat the sandwich in 2 sittings and be perfectly fine off of that. It can be very filling. The place is always very well kept (unless there's been a random rush of customers coming in right after a table had just left) - especially since there is only 1 actual person working there. **** Bonus: You can buy homemade kim chi & homemade bbq sauce here. A solid 3/5 stars. I came here during the slow period and was disappointed and surprised they didn't have any of the Chicken Skewers. So, I tried to order a few other items and was given an odd excuse "I don't have any right now, I have to cook that"....OK The place is clean inside, menu items easy to read, plenty of room inside but customer service goes along way. I didn't feel like the lady behind the counter/in the kitchen wanted to cook or serve me anything on the menu I asked for...No 'white rice'? Yeah I get this is a BBQ spot...that serves Korean dishes as an option, but that's just white rice? It's like not having beans or mac-n-cheese with your American BBQ. I stopped at the korean short ribs and pot stickers. I give the ribs about 5/10 in taste and the pot stickers a 4/10, It tasted like the frozen mandu potstickers I got from Costco a few weeks ago. Came in today w a friend to enjoy some BBQ for lunch. Needless to say, this is a very nice, hole in the wall store to get get your quick bbq fix. Prices are fair, $10 is guaranteed to fill you right up. I ordered the #1 lunch special, came with a chicken drum and a thigh, two ribs and two slices or garlic bread. The meat was tender and came right off of the ribs and the chicken was alright. My only complaint would have to be the sauce, not a huge fan tbh. Tasted like bbq sauce you buy at a grocery market and slather onto the food. But for the price, I would come again! Overall, would come again! The lady was fairly nice but asked us to leave around 2 to pick up her kid, so beware if you are eating on a Friday because the yelp hours aren't correct! read more

She had to take them out of the fridge and grill them on the grill. Pre-made ribs has no barbecue flavor whatsoever. There's barbecue sauce squirted on all of the ribs after it's warmed up, however, the sauce is just a plain old sauce... nothing special. Very disappointed never will be back. read more

I'm a barbecue snob. I expect too much from BBQ joints! Or do I? I guess I'm asking too much for a "famous" BBQ joint to slow smoke their meats, instead of boiling them. There's an assortment of BBQ goods ranging from chicken wings to BBQ sandwiches as well as various sides and even kimchi. The place is family-owned, so you're supporting a local small business, which is usually positive. The family is fairly nice and well-meaning, and their service isn't bad by any means. The food, I found, was pretty bland and lacking in any substantial flavor. The BBQ sandwich I had just wasn't anything special, and I was disappointed. The meat is not barbequed to perfection or anything, and there's just a smattering of barbeque sauce on top. The bun that my sandwich was in was soft and fell apart quite easily, which necessitated the use of a plastic fork. It also was slightly lukewarm and not steaming hot. The potato salad came in a small styrofoam cup, and it wasn't bad. It was not too chunky but wasn't anything too special. This is smoke flavored(bottled) meat that is not of the BBQ of the South in origin. Maybe south of Shanghai. When you see a "hole in the wall" BBQ place in NorCal just know it's going to Asian BBQ and not a southerner transplant feeding you delicious US South BBQ. I did feel bad for ordering at 1 minute till closing and eating in-- but the 5 stars are genuine. At first I thought we'd have to order to-go as it was almost time to close. But the lovely lady behind the counter said it was okay, not to worry. It's a small little place. I saw another couple there as I waited for my friend to arrive. The plaza sign actually only say "BBQ" so I almost missed turning into this plaza. Once you're in the plaza (diagonally from goodwill) you'll see a bright yellow sign with the word "CJ" I wasn't sure what this place was as I saw hot links, rib sandwiches, ramen, bulgogi--etc. Once inside it was a little clearer. They served sandwiches and Korean dishes. Originally I wanted ramen but the meat selections with the garlic bread looked mighty tasty-- so I ordered ramen and the dinner special. When I order the ramen I originally wanted miso. The lady said the the miso is plain-- then went on to recommend me the regular or kimchi ramen but if I like spicy to try the spicy. So I switched miso ramen to spicy! Glad I did, the flavor was spicy, sweet and tangy. Not the typical ramen someone would suggest to take me to. I tried my friend's kimchi ramen, the kimchi wasn't over powering the ramen broth at all. Balanced well with the ramen. The dinner special was 2 pork ribs, 2 chicken meat & garlic bread. Ribs were fall of the bone, flavorful and the sauce wasn't drowning the meet. Sauce to meat ratio, excellent in my opinion. One of the few small food location without any pesky bugs flying around. Cleaned and smelled freshly clean. When customers leave, the food, bowls & trash are promptly cleaned up. Yes there's a child there saying hi. I thought it was cute. I miss having to take my son to work with me. He entertained us a bit. While I was waiting for my friend, he made me laugh when he tried on the gentleman's glasses. (Father?) He proceeded to walk like a zombie as well. When the child was loud, he was told that he was speaking too loud by the gentleman-- I was okay with it. CJ BBQ is a small restaurant located next to Fast Pizza Delivery in the Blockbuster plaza. I came here for dinner with my boyfriend, since we wanted some bbq food. As soon as we walked in, we noticed the menu hanging on the wall. There were a few dinner combos and specials. CJ BBQ also sells Korean bbq and kimchi. I decided to order the dinner combo #1, which includes ribs with chicken, garlic bread, and 1 side for $8.95. My boyfriend ordered the rib combo sandwich. After we paid for our meals at the register, we went to find a table to sit. There is only about 4 small tables inside, so seating for customers is very limited. Our side dish came out first. My bbq beans was a bit sweet, but still good. I was surprised to see kidney beans and tiny meatballs in the dish. The bbq beans had a lot of liquid, so it reminded me of soup. My rib and chicken platter came out next. There were 3 big pieces of pork ribs and a quarter chicken. I liked how there was a lot of bbq sauce slathered all over the meat. The bbq sauce tasted really good, and it was not spicy. The ribs were tender and very good. The bbq chicken was also tasty. My boyfriend ordered the rib combo sandwich and he loved it. The sandwich had a lot of meat, and he loved the bbq sauce in the sandwich. The hot link provided a bit of a kick, too. Overall, CJ BBQ is decent for the price. However, there is no restroom inside for customers. I notice they didn't have a soda fountain for customers to order water, but they did sell a variety of drinks. So I'm guessing the banner is a new thing. The owners are Korean and they are extremely friendly. You'll see what I'm talking about if you decide to eat here. I ordered the BBQ Combo Sandwich and paid an extra $2 for Garlic Bread, a side, and a drink. I paid a total of $9 for my meal. It was a lot of food for $9. The sandwich was good and filling, however, the BBQ beans I got was not like typical baked beans I would get at a BBQ place, but it was like kidney beans with bits of bacon and BBQ sauce. I didn't think it was that great but it wasn't bad either. Also, I think the garlic bread was nothing extraordinary. Definitely not the best BBQ I've ever had, but in a very convenient location near my house so I can go here when I am craving some BBQ. The BBQ sauce is pretty good. It had the right thick, sweet and spicy taste which I love in BBQ sauce. The lunch combo is a bargain for the amount of food you get. One side and a large garlic bread piece. The soda selections is limited. The bathroom is closed off maybe because of non customers. I ordered pork rib and chicken combo. The bbq sauce is what did it for me. It was finger licking good. I used all the napkins given to me and some paper towel sheets. I visited at 1:45 pm the lunch combo special cutoff is 2 pm. Ribs are ok, chicken is tender and juicy. The owner is friendly and constantly asked if everything is ok. Been around for 23 years and I just tried it for the first time today! I've been missing out, apparently! Well, the owner (the wife) mentioned that they just started to serve Korean BBQ items (bulgogi, kalbi, etc) about a year ago. From what I had today, I want to say that was a great move. I had the BBQ sandwich and onion rings. Ate about half of it and was stuffed. Took the rest home. I was definitely pleased by the taste of the food. I hope this place stays for another 23 years because I will definitely keep coming back! Can't say there's a lot of Korean BBQ places around so either (a) this one will be a hit because (i) the food is GOOD and (ii) there's not much competition around OR (b), this one will eventually fail because not enough people around the area appreciate good Korean food. Would be a travesty but wouldn't be surprised if it happens. But then again, this place has been open for 23 years so there should be no worry. I used the PayPal app which gave me $10 off of lunch. Try it. Kinda clunky (not as easy as using the Starbucks app, for example) but the credit works. I appreciated talking to the owner (the husband) about PayPal processing fees (~3.5% yikes... which he absorbs). We talked about payment processing startups in the Valley that offer lower processing % fees. LOVE how everyone here talks tech! Sucks because they have advertisements all over their store. Ended up with the short ribs, very fatty and under cooked. At 14.99 for 4, was a huge disappointment. Holy subpar BBQ, Batman! 1.5/5 As much as I love supporting local businesses and seeing them flourish I absolutely have to write this review after the insult to BBQ of a meal I had yesterday. The story of bbq in South San Jose has been a bit of a dark one. Before, all we had was this place, The Santa Teresa Grill before it closed (was good), and Armadillo Willy's (meh). After the ST grill closed I started coming here for BBQ, and would come back every other year or so after being disappointed, then forgetting how disappointed I was after some time and coming back again. The Art of BBQ across the street recently came to save the day and has been my go to BBQ place since it opened, it's absolutely phenomenal and is REAL BBQ. They, however, are closed on Tuesdays so I came here to satisfy my rib craving. It's been a couple years, how bad could it be? BAD! Value: The meat prices are absolutely crazy. $44 for a full rack or ribs? WHAT? I ordered a 2 beef, 3 pork rib combo ($20) and since it comes with no side at that price, I ordered garlic bread ($3). Their sandwiches are a much better value. Food: The meats are boiled!! They're precooked then thrown on a grill for a few minutes to add some char marks. There's no smoke ring, no rub, no seasoning, nothing at all! They just boil it, add some char marks, and douse it in BBQ sauce. Yikes. There's no BBQ here to see folks, just bland meats with no flavor beyond the sauce they're drowned in. I give them kudos for having beef ribs but these were super chewy and still bland. The garlic bread was a good portion and had pretty okay, if a bit subtle flavor. It came out hot and I appreciate it was on a sourdough roll, but it was completely MUSHY which would indicate it was microwaved and not toasted. Come on!! The bbq sauce itself as well is nothing more than tangy ketchup. There's no seasoning or any real depth of flavor. It's. Freaking. Ketchup. I understand bbq sauces are ketchup based, but the final result isn't supposed to still taste (and look, even) exactly like ketchup. They have a Korean menu which I have yet to try, but I'll probably go towards El Camino Real for good Korean food. It might be great, but I'd read reviews from people who have actually tried it. The only saving grace here, kind of, is the hot link sandwich, which I thought was passable and actually enjoyed in previous visits. But please, please don't come here for BBQ expecting any semblance of smokey charred, seasoned, tasty goodness. Do yourself the favor and go across the street (or anywhere for that matter, even the Lucky's deli) and have infinitely better BBQ. As bad as I feel leave this review, I felt downright insulted paying $27, a premium price, for cost cutting boiled meats and microwaved bread. This place is going to have become more competitive to survive, especially with the opening of the Art of BBQ across the street that's cheaper and in the running for best BBQ in San Jose. I've been ordering from them for a year maybe? We have lunch meetings at work and I don't like to keep ordering the same boring sandwiches all the time. So I found them online and they've been really great. I ordered large orders from them for company parties as well. Food is delicious and fresh and they deliver on time. I never remembered to write a review, but today I had a delivery and they gave me a box of the corn nuggets as a thank you. OMG the most delicious combo of corn I've ever had.
