Great service, and a nicely varied menu. I had the apple and peppered bacon panini with kale chips, my wife had the grilled cheese Rangoon. Both were very good. Sister and her husband had the filet, and turkey panini. All were fresh, well prepared, and brought from the kitchen piping hot. Good beer selection too. I really want this place to do well, but it has a lot of room to grow. It was slow for a Tuesday lunch and we had decent service. The atmosphere is phenomenal and their designer needs a pat on the back. The fried green tomatoes with goat cheese was wonderful and our favorite part of the meal. The actual entrees, however, left a lot to be desired. They informed us they were out of burgers, turkey, and something else. Which, when looking at the menu, eliminates half of it. They claimed it was due to a busy weekend but we came in on a Tuesday. You can't run to a grocery store? As someone who works in the restaurant industry I tend to be pretty lenient on things like that but it seemed unforgivable. I ordered the bacon/Apple/cheddar on a waffle which was a swing... And a miss. Too salty, not much flavor, and incredibly dry. Even ordering a syrup to accompany it didn't help its chances. The mac and cheese was also lacking in flavor. My dining companion had the panini (made with chicken since they were out of turkey) and she was only moderately pleased. Overall, id like to come back in a few months when they seem to get their act together. Maybe they're too new or too young, but overall it was nothing to write home about. read more

Quite possibly the very best burger I have ever had...next to my dear mother's. 2 patties, plain old American cheese, lots of smokey bacon, onions pickle, and that Civil Sauce ( I don't know what it's made of, and I don't care). I've been to civil a few times over the past couple years. I have always had a good experience. The service has always been fast. I was there last night and we had our food 20 minutes after we walked In the door. Our waiter was very kind and checked on us frequently. The food here is delicious! We stopped on our way home to TX and wanted some variety. I had the crispy panko fish sandwich with Brussels sprouts. Best fish sandwich I'd ever eaten! They also over fried the chicken (hard outside, rubber inside) and they forgot the syrup for the waffles (didn't notice until I was already home). Doubt I'll ever order food from here again. The fried green tomatoes were delicious, as was the steak, which was cooked perfectly and came with perfectly cooked brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. Had a very pleasant dinner here this evening. Environment was very pleasant and service was great! I started with the Caesar which was a grilled Caesar so I'm already in. Dressing and tomatoes were nice and there was plenty of shaved cheese on the plate. I had the French dip as my entree and it was excellent. Good bread, plenty of meat, onions and sauce and the su jus was exactly what I wanted. As much as I liked the entree and salad, the side may have been the star of the show. I had the bourbon carrots and they were the perfect mix of well cooked but not too soft! The bourbon glaze was also amazing as the flavor was there but didn't overpower and wasn't too sweet. By far, Civil is known for their chicken and waffle dish. Even if you don't think you'll like it, trust me and just try it... Simply amazing. Now, here is why I'm only giving 4 stars... Their staff is great, it looks great in there, good atmosphere. Their biggest fault is trying to reinvent the wheel. Let's be honest, in any other city than Springfield they may be able to get 5 stars, but in the city with the highest ratio of restaurants to people, you have to WOW in order to get 5 stars. Besides the chicken and waffles, they're trying to be too unique with their taste palettes. And while that is fully appreciated, unfortunately it affects the wallet without a great return on investment via taste. I would really reinvest the effort of trying to put something crazy on the menu and double down on perfecting the classics. And why not? They did it with chicken and waffles! And they're surely not the first or last place to have come up with that combo... They just perfected it... I suggest they do the same with the rest of their menu. read more

After reading the previous reviews we decided we'd give it a try & are sorry we did. We got seated promptly and the waitress came and got our drink order. We ordered onion rings for appetizer and they came out after a short wait- the onion rings were so soaked in oil & even had standing oil on tray they came on.. the waitress kindly took them off our check as we couldn't stand to eat them. My friend ordered the prime rib French onion soup & it came out Luke warm, the prime rib sandwich was just ok, I ordered the chicken strips and a side of Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was delicious but cold & after my 2nd bite of chicken there was a hair stuck in the breading... obviously dinner ended after that- they kindly took care of the meal which I would expect nothing less but beware of this place I find it hard to believe 90% of our meal was horrible and everything for everyone else there tonight was fine?? I came in while visiting. I was taken by the comfortable but sophisticated ambiance. The cocktail menu is traditional and contemporary featuring my favorite - four roses. They have an interesting beer The crab beignets were outstanding. Served with habanero honey and blueberry ketchup. The petite filet came out quickly. The bar cafe space looks great. Front bar area has large glass garage door that opens the bar to the large front patio with wrought iron rail facing park central square. Back restaurant has side patio. Menu looks awesome. Many unique fresh foodie items well described with lots of unique sauces and side items. We only had appetizers and drinks so I really can't speak to the entrees. The dry rub wings were much different than expected. Nice and meaty served and very hot but the dry rub was not what you'd expect and came out with a heavily raw sugared finish. You can get any sauce with it So I got both got the civil sauce which was a smoky chipotle barbecue and the sarachia mayo, both recommended by my waiter who seemed somewhat new to the service industry. I preferred the house civil sauce. We also sampled the crab fritters stuffed with blue crab, cream cheese and Cajun spices, lightly battered and fried. No greasy, came on Spring lettuce with a blueberry vinegar sauce and side of thin habanero honey sauce. Very good. Waiter service was good but awkward - like Right after he brought the food he asked if we wanted a to go container. ..weird. Menu had great drink concoctions I will come back for like a Moroccan Manhattan. Or a honey bacon old fashion. I tried the pickled vodka Bloody Mary - was good- not the best bloody I've had but good. A solid 4 with promise of more with interesting menu (posted pic). Definitely worth a read more

Very overpriced for basic food. None of the food was seasoned and it was very bland. I had the filet and it was undercooked to my liking. The French onion soup had a weird smoky flavor to it and I was unable to finish it due to the taste. The best part was the side of Brussel sprouts. I would not recommend this place to friends and family. 4/10 read more

My fiancée first noticed this place one night, months ago when we decided to go out. Clearly the exterior made quite the impression because when we decided to take another trip to Springfield, this was the place he requested to go. We've been here twice this summer. Great experience including food and service. Talked it up to some friends. Che led the website to make sure they were open since it's a Sunday evening. We show up and they inform us it's closed for a private party. VERY POOR that you didn't update the website. Seriously. Very disappointing and then we walked back to the car and went elsewhere.
