This was my first visit to civil kitchen. I really enjoyed the outdoor seating and downtown setting! But I wasn't too impressed with their menu. There were very few gluten free options. I had a salad which was delicious, but I was disappointed I couldn't even have their fries. They have a very cool, modern vibe, so I was surprised how almost nothing was gluten free. It was my first time here and we came for dinner on a Friday night. The weather was nice so we decided to sit on the patio and there were a lot of other people who did. We all started off with the crack bread, fried avocado, and the crab beignets. I loved the crab beignets and fried avocado. It all came with their own dipping sauce and my favorite was the jalapeño dip that came with the fried avocado. It's like a sweet syrup with a hint of jalapeño but was not spicy at all. For my entree, I had the smash burger and it was just a basic double cheeseburger with your choice of cheese, I picked Gouda cheese. It was included with romaine lettuce, tomato, a spear of dill pickle and a couple slices of red onions on a toasty brioche bun. I had fries for the side. The burger was average, I don't find anything special about it. Probably won't order it again. I saw a couple items I'd like to try when I come back. Our server Cassidy was awesome. She recommended the homemade drink, orange cream soda, and it was very good!! She was attentive with a great attitude and a smile on her face. As much as I would love to rate civil kitchen well because the food and drinks are good, they are not good enough to get over the poor service. Every time I am here, the service is absolutely awful. If you are here for atmosphere, food, and drinks, and do not care about the service, than it is a 5 star place. However, as one of the college kids that tips well, this place could do way better. I highly recommend the chicken sandwich, and any of their wraps. For a side the Brussels sprouts, fries, and Mac and cheese are all great options. read more

Came here for dinner with family. We ordered crab beignets, crack bread, and fried avocado for appetizers. My favorite out those were the crab beignets. Each appetizer came with a sauce and they were all wonderful. I ordered the smash burger and it was whatever. It was just a regular patty burger with onions lettuce tomatoes. I guess that's what I get for being basic. I wouldn't get it again and I wouldn't recommend it. Not because it was bad or anything, but it was just eh. They had so many other different types of food. Kudos for excellent service by Jenny. #1 seller = steak sandwich on ciabatta with horseradish dill spread & balsamic honey drizzle over arugula ($12). Instruct them to add a splash of white truffle oil ($.75) on the tender steak tips and grill it as they would a Panini. The added depth is tremendous! Old college friends getting together for MSU Homecoming found an excellent, brand new restaurant in downtown Springfield MO. Food was delicious and service was excellent. If you're a hungry adult or eating with children, steer clear! We've never had a dining experience this terrible. With Black Sheep, Big Whiskey's and Maria's within walking distance, you'll be glad you skipped Civil Kitchen. We arrived with our children at 7:00 pm on 4/5/18. Our waitress seemed annoyed with us from the start. She told us no kids menus were available but gave us the choices verbally and said they were all $7 (the most expensive kids meals we've ever seen, perhaps designed to keep families away). We ordered a one meal for our two kids to share - they were very quiet and well behaved btw, I would at least understand her annoyance if they were not. It also helps to have a menu for them to color on to keep them occupied, but oh well. Anyway, my wife ordered the Chicken Avocado Wrap ($12.50) and I picked the Civil Burger. My burger was fine, but nothing I would go out of my way to eat again. My wife's wrap on the other hand was an embarrassment. It was a lettuce wrap with two very small slivers of chicken. Our kids' $7.00 kids chicken strips were significantly bigger. After one bite we decided to bring this to our waitress attention in the hopes that she'd get more chicken or at least invite my wife to make a new selection. Instead, the waitress argued with us, right there in the dining room! We pointed out the kids meal had more chicken than the adult meal and she curtly said it looked like the same amount to her. We were blown away - we were unhappy with the food which is not her fault. So we couldn't believe her attitude. We again expressed our displeasure (trust me, we didn't curse or act rude to her with our kids sitting there). At this point we fully expected a manager to at least make a stop to hear our plight to at least give us the impression our concerns were being heard. Nope. Nobody gave us a second thought. Our area of the restaurant was not crowded when we arrived, and Civil has many big screens for sports viewing. I asked for one of the TV's to be turned to the St. Louis Cardinals home opener (Nashville vs. Washington hockey and SEC network college baseball were on, with seemingly nobody watching). The waitress snapped "we have a lot of hockey fans" and walked away. The hockey channel was probably still on from the Blues game the night before. We didn't know it then but her attitude was just a preview of things to come. Yikes! We hope our experience was not the norm for this place but needless to say, with MANY great options downtown, we won't be back. read more

I have never walked out of a restaurant before, but this one I had to. We went here for lunch, about 1 pm on a Tuesday afternoon. The first thing we were told was a list of things they were out of. There is only about 20 items total on the menu as it is. There was only us and 1 other table. The service was fine, and the business has a nice feel and decor. My wife ordered the Chef Burger with fries and I ordered the chicken strips with mac and cheese. The food didn't take too long, maybe 15 minutes. When we got our food I was told to be careful of the mac and cheese because it was very hot. But this was not the case, it was so cold, I could stick my finger all the way in it. In fact it felt refrigerator cold in the center. Then my wife said "um honey my fries are ice cold". I felt them and yes they must had be sitting out for at least 10 minutes. Completely cold. My brussel spouts were also cold. The last straw was when I tried a chicken strip, that was over cooked to a dark brown, but it had no flavor. I am certain they dipped the chicken in water and plain flour and nothing else. We didn't want to eat any of it. We told this all to the manager, and he had no reaction, just said oh really. So we just told him to keep the food, we would eat somewhere else. read more

Not worth the trip. The waiter we had on a slow Tuesday evening was very "removed"..had to leave my table twice for additional service. Deviled eggs had a runny texture covered with choice old & cold dry bacon or jalepenos. The mac and cheese was dry, and did not taste like it was smoked, as per menu. The turkey sandwich was SO dry that I asked for some mayo to spread across my cold gray turkey.....then HELL NO, there was a hair in my sandwich.
