I have a love/hate relationship with their pizza- it's so greasy. I mean, really, totally, ridiculously greasy. It's greasier than the guy who shared my lab bench in high school chemistry. But- it's delicious. I just feel like I'm having a cardiac episode after every slice. I'm especially fond of the Bolognese, which is exactly what you think- meat sauce on a pizza. The chicken and bacon is also pretty rad. But what I LOVE and keeps me coming back is their awesome little mini meatloafs. The crust is all crisp and bacon-y (do they actually wrap the loaf in bacon? I think so!) and the sauce is gooey and brown and the taters are good. MMmmmmmm.... comfort food. I unapologetically love meatloaf, and getting meatloaf delivered to my door? Total win. read more

I really like the food here, but I've had it with the service. Delivery takes over an hour, consistently. And forget about eating there. I stood in front of the counter for a couple of minutes, waiting patiently for the guy who was supposed to be waiting on me while he was texting on his phone. No joke. He just stood there, texting away without looking up for a second. It wasn't until another employee (who saw me standing there) asked me if they could help me that he suddenly came to life and took my order. After ordering, I asked to use the restroom. Guess what? THEY DO NOT LET CUSTOMERS USE THE BATHROOM! WTF? How is it even legal for a sit down restaurant to not provide a public restroom? I've worked in lots of restaurants and eaten in countless places. This is the first time I've ever experienced this. Not happy. After paying $40 for dinner for 2, I don't think a bathroom is too much to ask for. I had to get my order to go so I could go home to enjoy my dinner with clean hands and not feeling my bladder the entire time. Geesh! read more

It's not very often that Yelp reviews completely and totally surprise me... but seriously? Seriously!?! I've ordered from this place three times now, and I think that's a fair shot for any place to impress me with their "creative" menu chock full of "customizable" burgers, sandwiches and salads - not to mention numerous claims of having the best pizza ever. And here's the thing - I really want to love them. They're close, so close to me. And their menu really does sound appealing. And they are so shiny and clean looking compared to anything near on Somerville Ave. But I can't bring myself to muster more than a meh and a shrug for any of the sandwiches or pizzas I've had. The pizzas I've tried have suffered from sparse toppings, been unevenly cooked and have been, yes, greasy. People, a pizza does not have to be greasy to taste good. The sandwiches are entirely unremarkable. To use an entirely outdated metaphor - I feel like a grumpy Simon Cowell voting contrary to Paula and Randy. I just don't get it what the appeal is. And for the record I hate being Simon; it's so much more fun to be Paula. read more

City Slicker has the best pot roast I've ever eaten! Tender and tasty! You won't be disappointed.

They get two stars because the food that they sent that was actually what we ordered was decent. They get a bad review for being grossly incompetent. We ordered on Grub Hub and they got my wife's order right, but they totally screwed mine up. I ate the two bites that weren't drowned in marinara sauce that I explicitly said to leave off and threw the rest away. We called to complain and the conversation was priceless: Nice lady who answered the phone: "City Slickers, pick up or delivery" Me: "uh, we already got delivery and my order was wrong" Her: "oh, you're at 10 m**#% street, I know" Me: " no, that's not us" Her: " oh then you're at x address" Me: " uh, nope" I give our address Her: " oh crap, not another one, what's wrong?" Me: "my sandwich was wrong" Her: "I can see the instructions here. They didn't do that?" Me: "uh, no" Her: " I can't believe they screwed something else up. Do you have the slip?" Me: "no, they didn't give me one" because they didn't, no credit card slip, nothing. Her: "I can't believe it. Their supposed to give you one. Everything is screwed up tonight." Me: "ok, can you fix it?" Her: " sorry, the cooks have gone home for the night so I can't send you anymore food. I'll call Foodler and get them to credit you for the sandwich" Ok, so the lady on the phone was very nice, but she seemed completely overwhelmed. I can't adequately convey the comedy of her reactions. Obviously I wasn't the only one calling to complain. Here are my problems with the conversation: She started with "pick up or delivery" then went on to tell me that the cooks had gone home later in the conversation. I can maybe give the benefit of the doubt that she just says that automatically, but it makes me suspicious. She also offered a refund on Foodler. Which would be fine, but it occurred to me after that we ordered from Grub Hub. They can't even fix their screw ups right. We will see if we actually get refunded. I would have expected a full refund for the whole order, and I wouldn't have bothered to take to yelp if we had, but they probably can't afford to refund a whole nights worth of screw ups. Needless to say, I went hungry tonight because this place is such a mess. I'd think twice about ordering delivery from them. read more

City Slickers serves what I would call comfort food. I order pizza from them occasionally and it is pretty damn tasty. Usually I go with the "City Girl" pizza (insert some sort of clever joke here) which is portobello, Gorgonzola and caramelized onions. A bit on the greasy side but in the most wonderful way. The crust also has this crunch to it that is pretty fantastic. I live close to city slickers but never go there, its a takeout only place for me. It tends to err on the pricier side of things, but not ridiculously so. Pro Tip: Don't order french fries for delivery... they just don't hold up. read more

I'm sad to give City Slickers only 3 stars, because the food has the potential of getting 5. My co-workers and I are in love with their salads, but almost always have an error with our order. They either forget things or make things incorrectly. Last week they put blue cheese on my salad (the menu says gorgonzola) and also forgot the pecans for my co-workers salad. When I called, I was told the chef said my salad comes with blue cheese. I told them the menu says it's gorgonzola to which they replied 'The manager doesn't always update the menu when changes are made'. No apology, and a bit of attitude. I finally got her to understand the error was not mine and that we order from there 2-3 times per week and she had a new salad delivered....but forgot the pecans. We let it go and ordered again today. No rolls, but we got butter, and they forgot the pecans again. We don't have a lot of time to have lunch between meetings and it's very frustrating that every time we get the order, we open it wondering what might be wrong. The salads are great but the service and quality control needs improvement. I do not recommend getting delivery from City Slickers, and if you do pick up..check your order before you go! Sadly, we are taking a bit of a break from City Slickers and trying out a new local place. read more

I ordered from City Slicker last night through foodler.com. Foodler did not deliver though, City Slicker did, which is important to remember. The food took 50 mins to get to my place in Central Square. Therefore I place the blame for the state of the food on the restaurant itself. I ordered a Mahi-Mahi sandwich ($7.50) with fries (extra $1.25) and Buffalo Tenders ($6.95). Mike (my bud!) got a chicken parm sandwich on foccacia for $6.50. Delivery was only a buck! and not even worth THAT much. Everything was soggy. Mike's parm was remarkably sponge-like, and greasy as hell. All the breading fell off it too. My Mahi Mahi was tasty, the ingredients were good (including fresh sliced cucumber) but the bread was AWFUL! It was the wrong flavor (a strong wheat) and soaked, i meant completely soaked in butter. I liked the taste of the inside ingredients but the bread did not suit the subtle taste of the fish. The buffalo tenders were good, but the only special instructions I put on the whole order were "Please make them spicy!!" and they were not. The blue cheese they had for dipping was perfect though, because it didn't have huge chunks and coated the tender tender tenderly with moldy cheesy goo. I give two stars for the tenders and the awesomeness of having people bring your food to your house, even if they take too long and eff it up. Pay by credit online. read more

Holy Hell, City Slicker! What happened!?! I wrote this place off in 2009, and I'll be honest, I'm in such a happy place right now, I can't even remember what prompted me to look this place up a few hours ago-- seriously. No idea. But YES. I'm not by any means a picky eater- I am, however, a very particular eater. Not only does their menu offer a HUGE variety of things (Korean BBQ wings to shrimp quesadillas to a pizza called the "Tree Hugger"), BUT IT HAS A TON OF HOMEMADE CONDIMENTS!!!! Whoa. And the toppings selections? Just go look at the menu. I can reassure you that it's good. IT'S SO GOOD!!! I had to order tots to get the sauces. The roasted tomato ketchup is nicely sweet and tangy, with chunks of tomatoes and.. maybe caramelized onion? The horseradish mayo is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Yum!!! My grilled chicken sandwich was also amazing. The chicken was juicy and marinated in something delicious- I had it on soft french bread (the closest thing to a bulky roll) with gorgonzola, bacon, caramelized onions, lettuce, and tomato. It was perfect. I have not had such incredible delivery food in a remarkably long time. I will definitely be ordering from here again in the very near future. read more

I always like taking extremes, but City Slicker makes that trickier than most. I've been there 5 or 6 times and tried to spread out my selections to get the whole Gestalt view of the place. Some plates, like the Portuguese pulled pork rock socks. But for a basic slice of pizza? You'd do better at almost any of the shops in town. They're creative, I'll give them that. The menu has a lot more going for it than your textbook pizza/sub shop. I've even been back more than a few times, which has to be worth something. I guess like any hidden treasure you just have to know what to get and what to avoid. Personal Reco of the day? Get the pulled pork, go next door to Woody's Liquors, grab a 22 oz to wash it down, and enjoy a meal in the conveniently placed park right next to you. FYI: I'm NOT responsible for you drinking in a children's park. You made that decision on your own. read more

Got delivery last night - the mini meatloaf with asparagus & mashed potatoes, and the baked meatballs with mozzarella & pine nut crumble & rigatoni, and broccoli. The meatloaf was weird tasting - kind of more like a giant hamburger smothered in tangy weird bbq-ish sauce (but not really). The potatoes were good, but there were literally four thin strings of asparagus that came with it. The baked meatballs had issues - the meatballs themselves were good (three medium sized), but the baked mozzarella (which we paid extra four) was three little lame dollops that disappeared in maybe 5 bites, leaving a shit ton of pasta & sauce by itself, and there was no pine nut crumble which we also paid extra four. Also asked for a small side of parmesan cheese, which did not come. Kind of sad that the highlight of the meal was the side of broccoli & the onion rolls. Wouldn't order from here again. read more

As a huge fan of Urban Gourmet before they sold it to the guy that owns Soundbites (and then it burned down and has never been rebuilt)... I was sad to see Urban go. Then I found out the original owners had opened up City Slicker Cafe. I was so excited! And if that wasn't great already, I can order online at Foodler.com - which I LOVE. Delivery has always been pretty consistent 30-45 minutes give or take (not like other places where I've waited an hour and half for my food). The cheese pizza is as good as I remember Urban's being - I love the crunchy crust. It's really filling so I can only eat 2 slices - leaves plenty of leftovers though. It's really one of the only pizzas I actually like - most places for whatever reason I don't think make pizza as tasty as City Slicker. And I really like their salad with goat cheese and roasted garlic dressing (although I'm slightly sad it doesn't come with garlic bread like it did at Urban). The spinach, chicken and cheese quesadilla is also very tasty and something I order frequently. According to my foodler ordering history I order here at least 2 times a month. So I'd say I really like the food here for takeout/delivery. read more

I have been ordering from city slickers for some time now and it has sadly gone down hill. I can not remember the last time one order was fulfilled correctly. Either a drink will be missing Something is out of stock and a substitution was made without my approval Or In the most recent calamity, I ordered a salad and what does one get with a salad? Dressing. There was no dressing with said salad. So I called to ask for the dressing and was told a driver would be on their way with it. City slickers is no more than a 6 minute drive. 10 minutes goes by 15 minutes goes by 20 minutes goes by 30 minutes goes by I call and ask where the dressing is. My answer? Should be there soon. Okay so I ask for a refund on the salad. And am met with the question "the whole salad?" Why yes. I wanted a salad with dressing. That is what I ordered. So I waited for my dressing as the salad sat sadly on the table awaiting its sauce. If I wanted dry salad, I would have forgone the dressing and ordered a naked salad. Also. The dumplings were cold. read more

I absolutely adore this place. I was so sad when Urban Gourmet closed so I was thrilled to hear City Slicker opened. The food is similar but not the same. I got a variation on the "city girl" pizza: carmelized onions and goat cheese with prosciutto. It was fantastic! The crust is different from Urban Gourmet... thicker I think, but the ingredients are top notch and it's great. Can't wait to try the sandwiches and salads! Edit 6/15/07: They're working on their crust it seems, we ordered the pizza this week and the crust was a lot more like the Urban Gourmet crust. Fantastic and getting even better! read more

I'm gonna say it... Best Burger in Somerville, and a top pick in Boston. The Bistro Burger is just amazing. MILES better than that over-rated O'Sullivans nearby. Aside from the burger, CitySlicker has some really unique sandwich offerings, most of which are delicious. Friendly service, clean place. Things that baffle/amuse me about CitySlicker: - They change their answering machine once per year around christmas time. You get the same message all year. We try reminding them about it ... but it never changes. At this point its a game to try and call to actually get the answering machine. - Closed on Mondays. I can't tell you how many times we've craved Slicker on a Monday and had to go elsewhere. - ORANGE EVERYWHERE! For a place that does somewhat upscale and not-cheap pizza and sandwiches they have a very cheap brand and feel to them. I believe this is part of the reason that the place is dead quiet even at lunchtime and I had personally walked by it over 100 times before even realizing they had sandwiches, and good ones at that. Someone with a design eye needs to overhaul that logo and their main colors. The quality of the food is far better than their outward appearance would indicate. read more

Ordered takeout. Paid a dollar each for two different sauces for fries and tots, they weren't in the bag. Went back to get them and the woman behind the counter insisted that they were in the bag and didn't want to give me my sauce at first. Lady, you think I wanted to walk back here to cheat you out of a little cup of ranch? On top of that, the BLT was dismal -not their usual thick bacon, and only a few pieces for the entire sandwich. Not even enough to cover half the sandwich in a single sad layer. But the price of it remains the same despite the huge drop in quality. See my photo of the BLT, I'm not exaggerating at all. Two stars because the fries and tots are still good. I hope it's just a problem with the cook and cashier and not the whole restaurant. read more

City Slicker Cafe - Sad BLT. This was all the bacon it came with. - New American Near Me - Somerville, Massachusetts

Had a grilled chicken salad from here the other day, which was great. I then wanted a "cheat day" by treating myself to pizza. My usual go-to is The Just Crust, which is delicious. Decided I'd give this place a shot. Bad call. The pizza was like Pizza Hut, Domino's, or Papa John's (i.e., fake pizza). It was thick, bready, spongy and oily with low-quality sauce and cheese. No self-respecting Italian or pizza lover would get pizza from here. Go for a healthy salad. Definitely skip the pizza. Other Pluses: Delivery was quick. Other Minuses: The pizza I wanted had out-of-stock ingredients, so they couldn't make it. read more

HORRIBLE!! Came for pickup and had me waiting 20+ minutes after I waited at home to go pick up. "25 minutes" WHAT A JOKE! oh.. did I mention they gave me the WRONG pizzas. Pathetic. Tastes like cardboard. You might as well go get a happy meal. 100% NEVER ordering from this place again. Don't even understand how this place has more than 3 stars. Waste of time. Waste of money. Waste of space. read more

1. The sandwiches are delicious. I don't really like sandwhiches, even. The mere thought of the Cobb sandwich or the Portuguese pulled pork sandwich makes my mouth water. I swear they put an entire avocado on each Cobb sandwich. 2. The pizza is good. Greasy, delicious, cardiac arrest inducing, seeping through the crust good. I'm a big fan of the Madrid and the Tree Hugger. 3. They don't hold back. I once ordered a salad with grilled salmon, not expecting much. The salad came with a freaking huge piece of salmon (the size you'd expect for a large entree), cooked to perfection. 4. The service has always been good. The people at the counter are always friendly and polite. Sometimes I have to wait a few minutes to pick up my order, but I'd don't mind. read more

I go to City Slicker in times of junkfood desparation because it's right down the street from me and I can order on Foodler in lieu of actually speaking to a person. When it first opened and I saw panko crusted mahi mahi on the menu, I laughed. It's still funny. This place is on Somerville Ave! Near Razzy's and La Ronga bakery, you don't find a lot of panko munchers. Like every one said, the pizza is nauseatingly greasy. A little while back, in a moment of weakness I got a slice. I folded it in half, because when I eat pizza, that's how I roll, and when I tilted the slice for takeoff into my mouth, a molten river of bright orange grease rolled into my hand. Staring at my grease stained hand, I realized the heinous act I was about to commit and threw the oil soaked rag -- oops, I mean slice of pizza -- out. The pasta is decent if you like your pasta al mushy instead of al dente. It's also pricy for fast food. If I get the urge to carbo load, like maybe if I ever actually run somewhere, I will take out from Lil Vinny's instead of being lazy. The fries are super hyped up and super soggy and smushy and starchy. If I am going to eat fries, they need to change my life, because I need to justify clogging my arteries with some kind of greater good. The dipping sauces they charge you for are mediocre too. Sorry, i'm just not feelin' it. read more

I spent a few weeks in Argentina earlier this year, and their food selection seemed to be limited to perfect steak, awesome empanadas, and interesting pizza. First - Argentine pizza had no crust - it was just a flat round pizza, similar to what a low-end frozen pizza would look like, but with NO crust. The dough was more cardboard-y than doughy, the cheese was more of a cheese sauce squirted around than melted chese, and the sauce was greasy and boring. And each boring slice was topped with a fat green olive where the crust should have been. And trust me, we tried many places, because it is possible to burn out on steak and empanadas - and they were all consistently bad. City Slicker's pizza was only missing the olive. To be honest, this was a SPE (sober pizza experience), which does affect the judging, but I am constantly amazed by how many places can fuck up pizza. it shouldn't be that difficult, but I haven't found a place that quite does it right in Boston. This place doesn't even keep up with Boston standards, I'm afraid. oh well read more

I'm a pretty big fan of City Slicker and their super eclectic menu. Full disclosure - I've never eaten at the restaurant and can't speak to their service, just the food... Friends and I have ordered all sorts of things from these guys including salads, burgers and other entrees like the meatloaf and seasonal specials like the empanadas. Everything has been pretty solid, and some of their side sauces that they make are really delicious too. They have greek style pizza with great topping choices like roasted tomato, caramelized onion etc. which are delicious, although the pizza can be a bit greasy. What has impressed me most about their food though has been the pasta dishes. Normally I avoid ordering any kind of pasta for takeout because it ends up being overcooked and I can make it better at home, but City Slicker's pasta dishes are always perfect when they get to me. Love their chicken parm and the roasted tomato garlic bread is outstanding. Give it a try. I've never waited longer than 45-60 minutes for delivery even on Friday/Saturday nights. I do find their prices to be expensive, but they do use good quality ingredients which helps I suppose. So, if you're looking for something a little different during your next takeout adventure, give City Slicker a shot. read more

*Updated 5-6-07* I reviewed this place within the first two weeks, updated my review again later, and now I have to update for a third time. Each time it's lost stars. I think it's a shame that I love the french fries and chipotle mayo sauce as much as I do - otherwise I'd never order from these guys again. I've ordered probably two dozen times (yes, I eat out a lot) and was satisfied with my order maybe 60% of the time. The quality of food is extremely variable, and they often forget to include part of the order, but they have no problem charging you for things you don't receive. Most recently, though, they've updated their order minimum to $15 and I'm hard pressed to find $15 worth of stuff to order at a time... nor am I willing to pay $18-$20 per meal (with tip) for the quality of food I'm getting from this place. I'm sorry that this place has gone downhill so badly. It was promising when it opened, but now it's just disappointing. I urge the other folks who've given it a positive review to re-evaluate and reconsider their rating. read more

City Slicker Cafe was recommended to me for good delivery in Somerville, so that's just what I did: had food delivered. There were so many options on the menu, but finally I settled on a buffalo chicken pizza and a Caesar salad. The pizza was surprisingly spicy and it came with blue cheese. Yum! The Caesar salad contained some radicchio, which provided great color to the salad, as well as a yummy taste. I'd definitely order from here again - it beats many of the delivery places we usually order from. read more

Love this place, and order from them a minimum of once a month. Often as part of a large group. For...three years now? Four? So I know of which I speak. Generally delivery, occasionally pick up. The interior would be a nice enough place to sit down for lunch, but I wouldn't relax into a leisurely dinner... PROS: Pizza. Lord that crust. I have daydreams about it. It's not NY-thin, but it's quite crispy; and rich and airy besides. Salads have real greens, nice flavor combos, nice customization options. Tater tots. Delicious sauces. CONS: Non-pizza items can be inconsistent. I've never had a bad meal here, but I've had stuff I wouldn't order again (steak sandwich; and I don't love their pasta). I also feel like they're creeping up to the too-expensive level. Some of the *seriously* harsh reviews on here are just plain vindictive. One star when you've ordered from them for a year and like them but have one bad experience? One item not cooked to your liking? Come on. These guys do a great job. Use Yelp as it means to be used, h8ers. I'm not giving them 5 stars because sometimes there are inconsistencies, but on balance, this is THE BEST pizza and real-food takeout in Somerville. A note: if you ever have issues with your order being mis-interpreted, just use their online ordering system. Easy, and it keeps them 100% accountable if anything goes wrong. read more

This restaurant isn't bad but it isn't great either, it's ok. My sandwich was pretty good but my dad ordered a meat dinner and it was very greasy and he didn't enjoy it all. The pizzas looked good too but the restaurant itself wasn't very comfortable and the interior itself wasn't great. read more

Cowboy now the chicken club Back when this place was urban gourmet on broadway I knew the staff by name and they new mine as well just from my phone number. I lived on the cowboy pizza, maybe a bit too much, but it is the best pizza I have ever had in my life. Now the place is city slickers in Davis square, but the quality of food has not changed. It is still excellent, and though the cowboy pizza is now called the chicken club (why lose such a great name for such a bland one?) it is still mouth watering and memorable. The restaurant only uses fresh ingredients, not it is not terrible uncommon for them to be out of one thing or another, but I appreciate this trade off to such great food. read more

I've always liked City Slicker, but it was never THE BEST. They used to be my first call when I was home alone in the winter and craving comfort food. Now though, it appears they're under new management, and so far the changes have been nothing but great, without any significant change in prices. They're my go-to now for any time I want actual good food, especially when I get tired of the other Somerville delivery fare, which tends to be heavy on the salt and grease. Some old favorites--the bolognese and the spicy sausage pasta--have seen a makeover and they've upped their game in general on packaging and presentation. My food arrives on time and hot, and nothing is leaking (which is more than I can say for any of the other places in Somerville that serve pasta). There are a lot of new items on the menu as well. The porcini mushroom ravioli in pink sauce is incredible, and the avocado stuffed with chicken salad is my new favorite. The rolls with flavored butter that arrive with every order are great, too, and the red velvet cupcake is everything you could ask from a red velvet anything. I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

This is not your typical homogeneous Boston pizza/takeout place. Their menu is very original, and everything I've had so far has been delicious. The bistro salad is awesome. When I ordered fried shallots added to the salad I was expecting them to be sauteed, not deep fried, which I guess was my mistake. I've yet to have a pizza of theirs that I didn't like. My favorite is the italian. I've eaten in their dining room. I've ordered take-out. I've ordered delivery, both over the phone and multiple times with foodler. My only gripe with the foodler menu is that it doesn't seem to be 100% accurate all the time. For example when I wanted the sweet potato raviolis they weren't on the foodler menu, but when I called in to double check, I was still able to order them. I wish the deliveries were better insulated. I've ordered pasta multiple times that arrived with the sauce already beginning to congeal. I don't complain though, because it's still really delicious and I'm happy they deliver as far away as they do. Oh, and the red velvet cupcakes are awesome! read more

This USED TO be the best pizza you could get in the area, but in the last year or two the place changed ownership, and now the pizza is garbage. The crust is the main issue: it used to hold strong all the way to the center, no matter how many toppings you covered it with, and it was fluffy and greasy and crunchy - all things you want in a pizza crust. Lately, the crust is squishy, tasteless, and leaves your toppings in the middle of the box when you pick up a slice. Bad move, guys. More importantly: SAD move. Your old recipe will be missed. read more
