I have been very reluctant to write a review on City Pets, perhaps because I feel so sick and guilty for having taken Cooper here to get groomed just because their rates are less than at Kaiser's (two blocks away) - a good lesson to "buy nice or buy twice". Grooming: I initially took Cooper here for doggie day care since I was working and going to part-time business school. I noticed they offered grooming and decided to try them out since their rate was less than at Kaiser's. The second time I took Cooper for grooming, he came home with such a close shave! Lisa told me they had to take extra fur off since it was matted. I thought it wasn't a big deal until a year later when my husband and I noticed that Cooper's fur was not growing back. We took him to the vet to confirm it wasn't due to a medical reason, and she told us that his fur had been cut down too short that it destroyed his fur follicles. Please see the attached before and after photos. We are distraught that his beautiful fur has not grown back (his neck especially remains bare). Doggie Daycare: The dogs are not given walks during the day. Instead, there are just pee pads on the floor so that the dogs can relieve themselves inside. This can be very counter-intuitive for a puppy who has just learned to be house-trained. read more

Took my dog in for Doggie Daycare. They have a 20lb weight limit, and he is 21-22lbs after a meal, so they were gracious enough to give him a shot. He is a rescue dog that is high energy, but quiet and friendly to all dogs and people. I was so excited at the prospect of getting him enrolled in a day care because he gets anxious being in his crate all day and really benefited from the socialization. The lady that I dealt with was awkward and unfriendly. Every time I dropped him off, the dogs seemed a little aggressive and she seemed to just yell and spray them with water. Every time I picked him up, he was smelled of pee, seemed more anxious than usual, and was covered in scratches. I told myself that the smaller dogs were probably just letting him know who was boss, that he would adjust, and ignored my instinct that maybe it was a stressful place for him to be. My boyfriend picked him up from Day Care last week and was basically told by the owner that the dogs get too loud and rowdy (although my dog doesn't bark and is basically submissive), and that she should have never allowed a bigger dog (not the only dog of his size) to join. She asked him not to return. My boyfriend also had a similar read on the woman that we'd been dealing with; a bit cold. He left feeling relieved as he too was a bit uncomfortable leaving him under her care after meeting her. Ultimately, I don't really care because based on my experience there I probably wouldn't have returned. I'd recommend people seeking Doggie Day Care to check out PUPS Pet Club in River North. They have live webcams all day that you can watch so that you aren't left wondering why your dog is coming home scared and injured. read more

My dog is 8 years old and has to be groomed every 6-8 weeks and normally dreads the groomer. When I moved to Chicago I was dreading trying to find a new place and putting her through that stress. Let's just say, she LOVES coming here. When I pick her up she's happy and excited, not shaken up and anxious. The ladies I've dealt with here know and love her and always make her feel welcome when we come in. I am so happy I found such an awesome place and recommend it to everyone! read more

I love bringing my dogs here. I have to go out a town a few days a week or I can drop off for the afternoon. They are well cared for and I don't worry like I used to. They are completely cage free so after grooming they get to be in a suite or play with other dogs until I can pick them up. The groomer talks to them like they are children and not dogs. Very pleased with them and highly recommend them for day care and /or grooming. read more

I can no longer recommend City Pets grooming, I have not taken my cocker spaniels to this establishment for over a year. One of my dogs at the time was using a very expensive dog shampoo prescribed by her vet, when I came to pick up my dogs the owner was not there and one of my dogs was shaking, at that point I forgot to take the shampoo. I returned a half an hour later to pick up the bottle, since it was brand new, but it could not be found. The owner was at the shop and looked through everything but could not find it. She said she had been cleaning and throwing out things, but did not find the shampoo. The owner told me to call the next day and talk to her sister. I did call the next day but had no luck, the owner's sister said she would keep looking and talk to her sister. City Pets never called me back, I did call several more times without any luck. I had to spend another $38 for another bottle of shampoo at the vet. City Pet did not make any type of compensation for the loss of the shampoo. I was a very good customer bring one of my dogs every 2 weeks for grooming since she had a very severe skin condition, and the other dog every three weeks. I spent several hundreds of dollars a month on the 2 dogs I had at the time. In addition, I referred other people to City Pets. I later found out that the owner wanted the groomer to pay for the loss ever though it was not her fault. The owner's sister was a very nice lady and would find and order unusual items for the store. Because of the fact that they did have a lot of interesting and useful products, I am only lowering my rating of City Pets to 3 stars. I longer use their grooming services or purchase products from the store. read more

Worst grooming experience I have had. I explained my Akita would take longer than usual to groom based on his fur, which needs to be dried completely. When I picked him up, he was wet on his head and paws/legs. They seemed unapologetic about not completing the service rendered and I was still charged $80. I had to have them re-dry him, which they did with distain. I was appalled that when charging that much, I would even need to have them go back to complete the full service properly. read more

I decided to take a chance on City Pets, despite the lack of reviews, because it was so close to where I live and the only other option had pretty bad reviews. I am so glad I came! They shaved and washed my little pup Milo, and did a really good job. He looks super suave now. I also thought the price was reasonable, especially in the area. The service was great too. I was a half hour late, forgot my paper work, and had issues processing my card. Throughout all my mess ups, the woman at the front desk was very nice and accommodating with payment and timing options. I'll definitely be back soon! Bonus! I had a particularly difficult cat who just wouldn't get in her cage. I had a grooming appointment for her at another salon, but she just wouldn't budge, so I had to cancel the appointment. Because she was really in need of grooming (super shedding), I started calling a bunch of other groomers that do mobile/in house grooming. City Pets was one of them that called back. They didn't have a spot right then and there, but they called me back a few days later saying they have an opening. They sent Amanda, who came on time, was very courteous, sweet and patient with my cat who kept hissing and showing no love. I had wanted a bathe, but there was a miscommunication with the appointment made, and she only had non-water products. My cat Eevee ended up getting a dry bath, deshedded with the furminator brush, and tail trimmed as per my request. I was satisfied with what I payed for, and Amanda really worked with my requests. She even sent a follow up text to see if my cat had settled down after she left. read more

This place is absolutely the GO-TO for dog grooming. I have the sweetest little shih - tzu.... until you try to groom him. He then turns into Cujo. I have had places ask to sedate my dog and even to not bring him back. He is always traumatized after a grooming session and when I pick him up, hes in a cage, very unhappy. NOT HERE! City Pets personalizes every cut. I was so worried bringing my little baby here, but I had nothing to worry about. They said I didn't need to sedate him, and when I came back, mind you an hour and 20 minutes later (Crazy fast!) my little pup so was happy and looked beautiful. City Pets provides each dog with a personalized groom. They focus only on 1 dog at a time, and they have separate play areas for them to wait in so the dogs aren't in cages. When I asked how my pup did, they said there was 1 scuffle, but the groomer won and he was fine after that. Other places had shaved my dog to the skin in hopes he would not come back anytime soon. At City Pets, my dog was cut so nice, and was so happy, I don't see how I could take him anywhere else! 5 stars for sure!! read more

The caring the wonderful people have at City Pets for dogs is unparalleled. they clearly love & strive to make the pups & their humans as happy. Although I personally haven't used the daycare since I have a larger dog, I must say its adorable! it's just like a living room for the dogs to feel at relaxed & at home in. My pitbull-ish girl was greeted happily by all & loves getting her baths here. she always smells amazing & another bonus is they dont charge extra for every little thing. We love taking our cocker spaniel to City Pets. It's expensive, but well worth the cost (and really only $10 more than any other groomer we tried). The price also includes a lot of things, like nail trims, that other places charge extra for. Our dog is a rescue and she has severe anxiety about kennels/cages. Their cage free policy is perfect for her. They always do an excellent job. One time they didn't cut her quite short enough and they were very understanding and trimmed her up for free. They always add little extras like bows in her hair or on her collar, which I find adorable. I haven't tried any services other than grooming. read more

Terrible experience with City Pets. On the day of the appointment for my labradoodle's bath, I called to inquire whether there was a daycare charge in the event we did not pick up the dog immediately after they finished. The person who answered the phone said she did not know. I asked if she could check with someone else there, so she put me on hold and when she came back, she said no one knew. I responded that since they did not know, I assumed that there would be no daycare charge. However, when I arrived there, the owner advised me that there would be a charge for keeping her after the bath, an additional $12. Mind you that our appointment was at 3:30, and the store closed at 6:00 that day, so we were talking about the dog being there for a maximum of 2.5 hours for her service and then a little bit of waiting time. So they wanted to charge me $12 for 1 hour of care after her service! I advised that we had called prior to going over so that we could make our plans for the day, and assumed that there was no charge since no one there provided information otherwise. Given that we were not provided accurate information, I inquired whether she could waive that charge this one time. She firmly said no. And then she told me to go home, that she did not want to provide the bath we booked. I calmly advised that we had walked a mile over there, and that we expected the service to be performed. She begrudgingly took the dog. When we received notice that the dog was ready, we rushed over so as not to be charged the insane daycare fee (if you arrive more than 30 minutes after your notification, then she charges $12 per hour for daycare). I brought my boyfriend this time since she was such a difficult person. I had a feeling that she would increase the price quoted, which she did. I told her that we would pay the price quoted, gave her the cash (did not trust her with my credit card), grabbed my dog and left. My dog was brushed out and clean, but her coat was still damp. They did not even manage to fully dry her. This is the worst experience I have ever had with a groomer. People should watch the video that another reviewer posted on here of the owner calling the customer a "b-tch". Most people in the pet business are friendly and warm. Not the owner of this place. She is awful in every way. Bring your fur baby elsewhere. read more

We had Crystal cut our dog Penny's hair. She is a very nervous Shih Tzu and right away Crystal made her feel comfortable. We have issues with Penny's ears matting and Crystal was so nice to spend the time discussing how to best cut her hair to avoid matting in the future. Everything we asked for was done and her haircut came out beautifully. Worst grooming experience ever. I dropped my 15 pound dog and came back to pick him up an hour later. The owner told me I need to go back to see my dog, it's not done yet. They said they could not control him and could not finish the grooming. They were half finished and still charged me $95 because they said it took two groomers to control him. How does that make sense? Half finished for $95. How can they not control a 15lb dog? He's tiny lol. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Today I brought my malitjpoo into City Pets for his first ever grooming appointment with them. In short: it was a fantastic experience. Mayra took care of him today, and she did a fantastic job! She took the time to consult with me before I dropped him off, and when I came back to get him he looked absolutely perfect. Everyone in the store was so friendly and so gentle when handling him. I felt totally comfortable leaving him in their capable care, and he was calm and happy when I picked him up. I can't get over how great he looks! I took my 6 month old puppy here to get a bath and her first hair cut. Alyssa was the groomer and she did a wonderful job! I had been taking my pup to Petsmart for her baths. However, once I asked them about a hair cut, they said they won't be able to do it, since she won't sit still and is too much of a 'puppy' to get cut. Or they could buzz her but it would take off all of her fur. I said no. I started calling around and found City Pets. It was a great find. There were no issues about her being too much of a 'puppy' and Alyssa was very helpful. Even spoke with me to see what I wanted Lily's cut to look like. Moved to Chicago recently and our dog was in desperate need of grooming. They fit her in the very next day. My dog is TERRIFIED of getting groomed and usually shakes like a leaf from the moment I drop her off to the moment we walk out the door. They talked sweet to her and took her back to get started. I received a text to pick her back up and she apparently had such a great time, we had to lure her out with treats. The haircut was perfect and I expected to pay much more than I did. I will absolutely take her back again. I will also note that the doggy daycare situation is hilarious. 5 or so small breed dogs behind the desk in an apartment-like setting. I took my goldendoodle here for her first haircut. While I'm confident that City Pets took great care of my puppy during the grooming, I don't feel that they truly listened to my request about grooming style. As one example: I asked specifically not to cut her ears or tail ... both were cut. Perhaps I could have been more specific, but a puppy's first haircut is certainly a big deal for every dog owner and should be discussed more thoroughly before making any assumptions. I think taking more time with me to talk through what I wanted would have ensured that I was a happy customer. Unfortunately, I have decided to look for an alternative groomer. read more

Been coming here for a while and always ignored minor inconsistencies due to convenient location. Recently we spent an entire afternoon waiting on a backed up work load and had to make 4 total trips to get our dog and all belongings. Most if not all of the groomers here have quit recently and there's likely a common problem going on that is showing in the reduced quality of the grooming and lack of organization. Dog grooming is stressful enough on our pets, no reason to compound that by dealing with people who don't seem to prioritize their clients. read more

first and foremost: BEFORE going there, make sure you read all the "FILTERED" reviews at the bottom because they all say exactly what i have to say. It looks like Yelp's filtering system is not very reliable. Secondly, this place still owes me $28 which i had to file a credit card dispute for. Thirdly, they close at 6pm, NOT 7pm. Consider yourself warned. This place should be called: "2 ladies and their issues". It is ran by 2 witches: 1 good witch, 1 bad witch. The good witch is the taller one who stays at the daycare. She is great with dogs, genuinely loves them, a nice person who is overall easy to deal with. Unfortunately for us and for her, she is asked to do more than daycare and this is where it becomes less fun. Don't ever ask her to do ANY decent billing for you, no matter how much money they make out of you every week. In other words, your dogs are cared for, but it stops right there. Be ready to receive zero receipts one week, then 4 receipts the next one, then 1 receipt the third week, or be charged the minute you leave the door, or a week later. it just fluctuates like the temperature by the lake. The only constant was that i was charged in US$ everytime. And when you get the statement after requesting it 3 times, you receive it WITHOUT the dates & hours you are charged for. And exactly, WHAT is a statement good for, under these circumstances ???? i swear i put up with this for about 2 months, even when Good Witch literally asked me to write down myself the days when i bring my dog in to keep track of the charges lol, DESPITE being charged $34 for HALF a day, which is $10 more than other busier and sunnier daycares in town. i agreed because they were the closest to me, because Good Witch seemed to love my dog and my dog her, and because i didn't want my dog to move from a place to another. Now here is the very bad news: The bad witch is the owner a.k.a. "decision maker". THAT'S the whoooole problem. Because she should NOT be put in touch with other humans and certainly not run a business. Everything was going fine until she got in the picture. This woman screwed up with me about 3 times so i had already given her TWO chances. She is a very angry, negative, conflict addicted person who can't disagree without being disagreeable, takes everything personally, is way too easily offended, sends you bad forms by email days after you request them, and if you ask if they have cameras, she feels insulted and ignores you completely (and your business), then when you show up at the store she welcomes you looking visibly offended, and if she meets you in public she makes totally inappropriate comments about your...cleavage. Compare her to a cactus plant: there is no way to get in touch with it without getting hurt. So everything went well until i had the terrible, inconceivable, crazy idea to text Bad Witch just asking her super nicely if she could come up with a package deal as SHE had suggested earlier, so i don't have to go through billing issues again, because they had overcharged me and it was taking way too much of my time to figure it out and the good witch had no answers for me. The response was beyond my wildest imagination. Basically, Bad Witch was telling me in a tirade that i shouldnt waste Good Witch's time to fix their billing mistakes. In other words: "deal with it, don't waste our time, even if you are overcharged" lol. FYI: i was their absolute best customer. $500 in average per month. Note the past tense. i had the choice to either accept being treated like crap, or give them the boot. The next day i visited 2 new daycares. i finally chose the closest. The place is almost 10 times larger with DAYLIGHT (that was constantly my issue with City pets because the daycare space is not at all exposed to daylight and they hardly have 3 dogs there), plus grassy and outdoor areas, AND possiblity to monitor by cam all day, AND $10 cheaper no matter how long the stay. Needless to say, i felt stupid. So exactly why would one choose to pay $34 for HALF a day as opposed to $24 for full day (or $14 at petsmart) for a tiny 20 ft x 20 ft space where dogs don't even see daylight or grassy areas, where you can't check what is going on via webcam, and where "billing" and "charging" are considered synonymous ? read more

If only I could give ZERO stars. Not just because of the way the owner treated me, but because of the way she ABUSED MY DOG!!! This is THE ABSOLUTE WORST place to take your beloved fur baby!!! I can not begin to express my disgust and disappointment of City Pets. I'd like to start out by saying that I've been a neighbor and friend of this establishment for the past 2 years. I've brought my dog, Shayla here for her dog food, treats and grooming Etc. The owners seemed to be nice, but also extremely flakey. Last year they we making the transition from doggie supply store to doggie day care. Last summer my work hours increased significantly and I desperately needed doggie day care. They sent me emails promoting it yet it never happened and there was never any follow up. Emails would go answered and phone calls were never returned (that was a blessing in disguise knowing what I know now) I moved from the neighborhood last October. Since Shayla's current vet records are still on file with them I continued to use them as a dog groomer for her. This is where the shit (literally) hits the fan! I dropped off Shayla today ( March 19, 2016) and had her travel bag with me. As I was dropping off Shayla there were 2 other dogs that were about Shayla's size that seemed a little playful. Shayla is shy and it takes her some time to warm up. I told the proprietor of City Pets to put her in her bag if she felt distressed at all because it's her safe place. I walk out thinking all is well. I get the call about and hour and a half later saying it's time to pick her up. I walk across the street and am there within 5 minutes. I walk in. There's nobody there. There's now 3 other dogs and Shayla is shivering and whimpering in a corner. Her muzzle is completely wet. There is also pee and poop all over the floor. Shayla is groomed but her paws are wet and dirty and her muzzle is stained. She's clearly distressed and terrified. I specifically told the lady at city pets to put her in her travel bag if she got upset. She didn't do so. After about 5 minutes the owner shows up from the back holding a wet dog and says they were backed up with grooming appointments. I expressed my disappointment and showed her how upset my dog was. She immediately got defensive. I asked why she didn't put Shayla in her carrier and she said she was too busy. I'm very disappointed and she tells me it's $60.00 for Shayla's visit. I'm annoyed but I hand over my credit card anyways. I say that I won't be coming back EVER again. She didn't like that very much. I didn't leave a tip because of the terrible abuse I felt that my fur baby was put through. As I was leaving the owner yelled at me and called me a bitch. Not once, not twice, not 3 times...BUT 4 TIMES!!! I took a video where she admits to calling me a bitch 4 times. Please do not bring your beloved fur baby here!!! They are abusive and neglectful. I'm so glad I didn't sign her up for doggie day care. The owners are absent minded, neglectful, rude and nasty. I can't imagine how they are still in business. read more

I have been taking my baby to City Pets for both daycare and grooming since moving to Chicago about 1.5 years ago. After living in three different cities and trying out a variety of doggie daycares over the years, we really lucked out finding City Pets. The owner, Lisa, is our personal angel. My 8-year old small dog has every anxiety disorder in the book along with a degenerative spinal disease, so he cannot be left alone. While this has historically been a problem with daycares in other cities that do not divide dogs by size (which can pose problems for my little guy's bad back if a big dog accidentally jumps on him), I am so grateful for this wonderful small business that caters to dogs his size. Lisa is so sweet with all of the doggies and such a calm, kind, gentle person. Her "pack" of regular small dog customers all adore her. She is also dedicated to ensuring that the dogs are well-loved and provided attention throughout the day. It is also extremely comforting to a pet parent like me to know that my baby is among doggies his own size in a living-room-like environment where he can nap on a couch or a dog bed and not be crated. In addition to daycare, my shihtzu-bichon is groomed there (god bless the groomers who handle him, he is NOT an easy grooming customer but they always manage to make him look so handsome!) I also order all of my dog (and cat) food, treats and supplies and bought a fabulous running stroller to use on days when my dog's back is "out" but I want to get some exercise. :) I do not normally write reviews but I thought it might be helpful for others to read a review by someone who patronizes the business on a daily basis. I know that Lisa absolutely loves dogs and would do anything to help them, and I am grateful that there are size limitations to encourage safety for the small dog regulars. I trust her with my heart (my dog) and applaud all the good work she does for her clients and their parents. Thank you Lisa!!! read more

RUDE/INATTENTIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I used this service the past 6 months. In my last appointment, the staff was not attentive, completely ignored my request to have my dog shaved (but charged me for the extra service anyway saying the grooming they provided was comparable and cost the same). I accepted this. However, when I went to make another appointment and asked how much a cut will charge (keeping in mind that I have been paying a set price for regular hair cuts), they accused me of not appreciating their effort of service and refused my appointment. When in actuality, a wonderful dog grooming service right by them with exceptional customer service and better attention to detail with the same level of work is priced lower. read more

I have used City Pets at least 5-6 this summer for doggy daycare while visiting the city and really felt good about leaving Rocco in the care of Lisa. The place is small and quaint, the dogs there are all small and friendly.
