I really like this place. The amount of local on drugs they have to deal with is absolutely outstanding at this location but they do it with class and flair. The neighborhood has a lot of people that live in it that are using the drugs, not necessarily all homeless. I find it's a great place to go if you want to help somebody. There's usually at least one person outside who will genuinely ask you for food. Not money they want a piece of chicken. As for the store, it's absolutely outstanding. Not only do they have everything down to like garlic herb, even jalapeños, along with every other staple you can imagine. They really have went out of their way to stock as a mini market not as a place to shop daily but as a place come and get whatever you may have forgotten. Or if you need a night's meal. They actually sell some chicken and steaks one and two at a time in case you want to cook dinner for yourself. I've never seen that before. Class move. They make a great Cobb salad and with their ranch. They have a bunch of breakfast stuff along with chicken fried fresh all day. They make the best sandwiches at the most reasonable price. A YouTuber mentioned this as one of the top 5 fried chicken spots in Seattle. We ended up here after our first choice was closed. Walking in, the place smelled great and the chicken looked cooked to perfection and everyone at the deli counter was ordering it. I like the leg, but they didn't have any, it was thighs and breasts, so I don't know if that's all they fry or if they were out of wings and legs. I decided to go with tenders and JoJo's. I'd give both B potential, but they were both D level. Both were hot, but nothing was crisp. Other places are able to keep chicken crisp, so they need to revisit their warmer setup, because chicken and JoJo's that aren't crisp, aren't good in my book. The people were nice, the price was fair, but the product was a disappointment, also, unless you are a local, good luck finding a parking spot and dealing with traffic. read more

To the locals on the block, this establishment may be referred to with a name that rhymes with "City Market" but is less printable. To some degree this is out of affection. City Market is a neighborhood institution offering (at the very least) decent food and a passable stock of necessities at hours both late and early. Unlike at some other nearby convenience stores (where the cashiers are surly and prone to harassment of customers), the employees are pleasant in a laidback fashion, relatable if you're not a stuck-up jerk, and amenable to friendly chatter. If you are familiar with the movies of Kevin Smith, as a native of New Jersey I believe that City Market is where _Clerks_ would have been filmed were it set on the West Coast. The deli is superb by corner convenience store standards. The satisfyingly greasy, salty fried chicken and the custom-made sandwiches are very reasonable prices for the area. The cheese sauce sold with potato wedges during afternoons is magical. If you're not in the mood to be loaded up with carbs, I recommend buying a few chicken tenders and asking if the deli will sell you a tub of just the cheese sauce, no potato wedges. Consider throwing a buck into the tip jar if you do this. I would suggest not trying to do your general grocery shopping here due to the rather painful typical convenience store prices. You should also be aware that chaos visits this shop often. "Did you know that they sell drugs at the apartment building next door on the hill?!" Yeah, buddy, they know. Shout-out to the delightful effect that the Alien and Predator decorations have on the atmosphere, overall vibes, and ambiance. It is my understanding that some employee has been making steady efforts to offload their Alien and Predator merch collection here over the years, and I find it deeply endearing that the store chose to assimilate this into their sales and decor rather than reject the notion out of hand. read more

If I could give it a zero, I would. I go to this place so many times and I lost count. Today I had the absolutely horrible experience. I did my usual thing by going to the back of the store to grab a Coke Zero. They weren't cold enough in the back, so I decided to grab the ones next to the cashier. While I was walking back, an old white man who worked there confronted me and commanded me to take the soda out of the pocket. I showed him my hands and he realized that I had nothing then he just said: oh I thought you grab a soda. He didn't apologize to me. I ended up grabbing a soda in the front and paying for it. After standing in front of the store for a few minutes, I decided to go back confront him. I walked back and told him: hey, it's not right to assume people and accuse people of things that they didn't do. Not only did he not apologize, he went even harder by saying: I saw you grab a soda. I replied back: play the video. If you don't have the evidence, you should apologize to me. He ended up ignoring me. All the other cashiers were just standing and looking. I told him: it's not right to treat a customer like this. I am never coming back to this store. read more

Moved to the neighborhood just 2 months ago. From the first time I walked in the door, this place has been exceptional. Totally fine with dogs (huge plus, especially when you can't leave your dog home), welcoming and friendly. Exactly one month after moving nearby, my incredible pup passed away and the staff have literally cried with me, given me hugs and ask me how I'm doing every time I come in. I have never felt so much like a part of a community since I moved from my home state of Vermont 3 years ago. Of course it will be more expensive than a grocery store- it's convenient. I have no problem paying more for that. They always have my ice cream and the deli is great! On top of everything else, I pick up a lot of trash and the owner has graciously allowed me to put some of that trash into their locked dumpster so that it doesn't end up back on the street. In the middle of the night, there are drug dealers and hoods hanging out literally in front of the store on the side of it that yoju have to walk past to get in. In theory, I'd much rather shop at the corner store (so I can call it a bodega and pretend I actually live in NYC) than the giant supermarket. And City Market does have hilarious, endearing signs. And they do have $1.50 corn dogs (om nom nom). Unfortunately, they also have ridiculous prices on just about everything else (like chips! and ramen!) and I'm often skint. I'd be able to overlook that at times, though, if their employees weren't among the rudest I've ever encountered. Every time I'm in there, the cashiers are chatting amongst themselves or with their visiting friends and it feels for all the world like a clique-y little club that I'm not cool enough to be a part of and because of that, ringing up my Red Bull is just such a huge inconvenience. It's not simply that they're not all smiley and friendly - I've actually felt so unwelcome that I was physically uncomfortable while being rung up, like the employees resented my presence. City Market is a small store on Capitol Hill that has a surprisingly good mix of products that definitely puts it a cut above the average local convenience store. On my last trip, I was looking for a quick meal and decided to check out they're deli and was impressed with the variety of sandwiches and cooked food items. I settled on the chicken strip and jojo's combo that at first I thought was pretty standard price until I got home, opened up the box and saw the gigantic pile of potatoes and chicken. Needless to say I was very happy with this purchase and probably needed a nap afterward. The lady by the counter was pissed off about something and I just walked in to buy a soda. she was upset and and rude and I know she overcharged me but didn't want to say anything because she was already pissed off and treating me like crap. i used to like this place. they have everything you need, the staff are often quite kind and seem like they are respectful to the homeless people who often hang out outside. (who are always very kind themselves and are just looking to get a few dollars or some food.) tonight however, my girlfriend and I bought some groceries and as we were checking out, a little boy, had to be about 7 or 8, tried to buy a Gatorade and didn't have enough money. we offered to pay for him and the old man with the white beard, bald head, and glasses working there got extremely mean, yelled at us and the kid and forced us to get out. He said "Well, everything we have is on the board..." like I was an idiot...really? He then blessed my experience by whipping out a little order form and starts to ask me what kind of cheese I wanted, bread, lettuce and tomato...and I answer each question then he sighs really big and turns the sheet around and hands me an ink pen. Like "Look woman, fill out your own order!" My whole point is this: If someone is new to your establishment and needs guidance on what to order don't be a douche, just help them out! They have some wines I like, a decent selection of grocery items, snacks that aren't junk as well as all the expected snacks that are deliciously junky, and a big selection of vegetarian and vegan sandwiches. They carry Hillside Quickies! Yum! I stopped here yesterday, wanting only a Starbucks Doubleshot Light, an Odwalla Carrot Juice, and a Hillside sandwich. Done, done, and done. The employees are great. Scruffy and eclectic and friendly, every one. How many convenience stores can boast that? Pretty sure I got food poisoning from their chicken strips, though food poisoning is hard to pin point where it came from. Dude at the deli is usually pretty exasperated but I guess I get it, I work in the industry. Still, kind of abrasive. Prices for most things are high, except for deli items, which I no longer trust because I've had intense cramping, vomiting and diarrhea all day. I come here mostly to buy sandwiches. Sadly, they advertise that they make them until 1AM which is almost NEVER the case. I try not to be *that guy who comes in at 12:55AM but I've been turned away from ordering a sandwich as early as midnight. And on various occasions. It's a shame because they're the primacy reason I spend money here. So if I can't get a sandwich, I leave and spend my money elsewhere. That late at night there aren't many other options here other than packaged food that's been sitting out. I might as well hit up Hot Mama's or something else that's open nearby. Don't go here for your daily needs. It'll be a total ripoff. I only go here for groceries if I've forgotten something (a lime for a box of Coronas, for instance), or really want a soda for some bizzarre reason. But there is one good thing about this place: The deli. The pre-cooked stuff you should stay away from, but the sandwich shop is actually pretty darn good. For $5, you can get a "bat boy," which is 3 meats and 2 cheeses on your choice of bread with your other fixings. Couple that with a bag of Tim's Cascade Jalapeno chips and a beer (from your own selection, don't bother buying beer here either as the "sales" are bringing them down to normal prices), and you have a cheap meal that's pretty good. Oh, and watch out for the multitude of panhandlers outside. Nice enough people, I guess (no aggressive ones), but when you see the same person over and over again, it kind of gets to you. If you're feeling charitable, bring them a sandwich, not give them your change. read more
