I'm probably just echoing what other people have said. Convenience yes but honesty no. I normally never ask for a receipt or a price breakdown but I caught on to the overcharging. I started asking for price checks and a receipt. I can't speak for all the staff but there's a particularly hateful old white man that works here that sits on his f*t ass behind the counter. He's always rude, dismissive, and KNOWS your onto him when asking for prices. Real 'get off my lawn' vibes. In fact, as I type this I'm never coming here again. They are unethical. Horrid management. First, i was sold a faulty product and when i returned immediately the manager refused to do anything about it. I did not ask for a refund, simply asked to exchange. Then once that was refused, only minutes after purchase, when asked if i could try the product in store before buying so i wouldnt lose more money, the manager threatened to call the cops unless i paid first again. She said she would call the cops and tell them I was stealing. Bullies with terrible products. Do not buy disposable vapes unless you want to be robbed and treated rudely. Manager spoke over me multiple times and refused to take into account that even the cashier vouched for the fact i was just there. read more

Lived across the street from this market for 10 years. Easily the best-stocked place in town and the staff are excellent given what they have to deal with on a daily basis. Lol at people complaining about return policies and customer service-its a city market not a Nordstrom. Get in, get out, don't hassle people, or head back to the burbs where you belong. read more

This is a solid market that also has really good ready made food, like burgers (I haven't had one, but my boyfriend says they're huge, which is basically synonymous with good in his world) and the chicken teriyaki. They also have a very solid wine selection and are definitely cheaper than the other market (you know which one I'm talking about) in the area. read more

I'm not so sure about this place. Convenient? Yes. But that's their whole shtick! I was walking passed today and considered popping into the City Market just another block south. But... because I'm lazy, I decided not to walk that extra block. Prices here were steeper than I expected and when compared to their competition just a block away, they are pretty forgettable. I've read reviews about really negative experiences and it makes me hesitant to go back. I can't prove I was overcharged but I paid with a debit card and didn't get a receipt. In fact - you know those machines you use to enter your pin? Typically they reflect the price you are being charged before you enter your pin. This machine didn't. I thought twice about it and then decided just to enter my pin and leave. So... I'm not sure what exactly my total was or what I was charged for each item... Without the deli, the quality, or the variety of the place just a block away, I don't think I'll be going back. Heck... I could use the extra 2 min walk downhill to go elsewhere. read more

This really happened: like many others, I occasionally patronize Hillcrest for wine, snacks, etc. because it is close and I am lazy. However, last week, I stopped by for an energy drink and almonds on the way to the gym. As I was looking at the "other" drink selection in the "produce" section, one of those Neuro_____ drinks (you know, the ones that promise you bliss, slimness, and orgasms, but probably do nothing) fell off the shelf. A bit of the plastic cap broke off, so I decided to be nice and take it up to the counter when I made my purchase. When I gave it to the clerk and said what had happened, he said "You broke it" and demanded that I pay for it! I refused and he eventually backed down, but I still made my purchase like an idiot - for which he attempted to overcharge me by ten dollars!!! He claimed that he had accidentally rung up cigarettes with my Red Bull and almonds - uhhhhh, nice try, buddy. Needless to say, I will be walking the extra block to City Market, where the selection is better, the prices are lower, and the employees (owners?) are not greedy, immoral lunatics. read more

Ok, I'll admit that this place is very convenient. I suppose it gets points for that. What this place isn't, is honest. For the second time in a few weeks, I was just charged more than the price displayed for my purchased items. When I told the guy at the register that he overcharged me, his accent got conveniently heavier and he acted like he didn't understand me. No matter the obvious signs, he was going to charge what he wanted and I was out of luck. I visit this store on occasion while driving lfyt. Place is way overpriced for grocery store items. I went into the taco area today. Not as good as taco truck. I bought 2 beef tacos, just okay. The spicy sauce on tacos was spicy. Maybe they should ask if you would like it spicy or non. I will not be coming back, unless I hear its improved. read more

So, a couple years ago, my friends were sitting in Clever Dunnes (back when the bathrooms still worked) drinking beer, when they noticed that water was rushing down the street outside. Soon, they started to noticed Twinkies and bags of chips floating by in the stream of water. Soon after that, they noticed local children chasing the snack food and grabbing it from the mini-river. They then went back to drinking their beers, completely unaware that two blocks away, the Hillcrest Market was burning to the ground. Fast forward a couple years, and the Hillcrest Market has returned! And, boy, do I love it! I actually make up excuses to go buy things at it. "Hey, honey, I think we are running dangerously low on Tater Tots, I'd best go across the street and buy some!" To be fair, the market itself is nothing amazing, but in comparison to the old Hillcrest market, its night and day. I mean, literally, the old market was dark and scary, like night. While the new market is bright and cheery, like day! And its clean! I mean, I'd never eat off a convenience store floor, but if I had to, I'd pick the Hillcrest Market in a heartbeat! And the staff is friendly. Not like "obnoxious friendly," but more like "randomly start talking about the Laptop Battle I went to at Chop Suey last night" friendly. Oh, and the Hillcrest Market puts the "convenient" in Convenience Store. The place is literally right across the street from my apartment. And, I tell ya, when you're lazy like me, you really appreciate only having to walk a half block to buy your Cup O' Noodle soups, rather than having to hike two blocks down to the City Market or to the Top of the Hill Market. So, if you are ever in the neighborhood, and need to buy some chips, or beer, or wine, or microwave burritos, or cigarettes, or cream of mushroom soup, or Heath bar, or a newspaper, or some Vita-water, or whatever, I highly recommend you buy it at Hillcrest Market! read more

I've been overcharged a number of times--but you can't really prove that because they don't itemize receipts. Hillcrest Market is convenient, just a quick trip from my home and I can kill a snack craving or quench my thirst. This place has a little bit of everything from produce to toiletries, frozen food items, eggs and dairy. I can count on them in a pinch for cleaning or office supplies and I definitely appreciate the huge selection of beer and wine. The cafe is unassuming but don't be fooled, the food is fast and delicious and the portions are more than enough for one. I've tried the teriyaki, burgers, and cold sandwiches and it always makes for a satisfying meal. They have a small indoor seating area or you can order to go. I stop in at least once a day and the staff is friendly and gracious. The guys that work at night are super cool. Arigato, Paul! I'm probably biased because this is my neighborhood market and everybody thinks that theirs is the best, but Hillcrest makes me feel that much more comfortable since I've moved into the area. read more

Hillcrest Market is a good convenience store. They are conveniently located next to bus stops, at the intersection of 2 main streets, and they have a large beer & wine selection. If I forget to plan ahead and need to take drinks to a gathering down the hill from Broadway, I'll swing by Hillcrest Market instead of going out of my way north or south to hit the QFC. People have noted here they get overcharged at Hillcrest: i have my receipt from last night: $8.99 listed price of Alaskan Winter Ale 6-pack, $9.84 charged to my credit card. Hmmm. Not sure what to say about this one.... it's a market, it's open late, it's very convenient and has all of the late night essentials. Service is friendly. Prices are a bit steep and I don't think I'd necessarily go here over other larger markets if given the choice. Wow, that 1-star reviewer is.....either incapable of coherent english or has serious personal problems. Hillcrest is there for me for those last-minute things I forgot to pick up at the grocers. Also, quite a great selection of wines for it being a conveniece store. They have those cute little tags on select wines that explain the flavor...gives it that nice neighborhood-y touch. Their prices are a little more than I want to pay, but man, when I need something, they're always there for me. read more

Horrible experience with parking at Hillcrest Market that people should know about. Diamond parking scammers control the lot. I've been going there for years and never had anything like this happen. I parked ran in for coffee creamer and walked back out. There was a parking guy there who said if I pay 3.00 I wont have to pay the ticket so I walk over and he proceeds to put the ticket on my car anyway and runs. Are you kidding me?? They designate three spots for customers but then they allow people to take them who aren't even in the market forcing you to park in the others. My 4 dollar creamer now costs an additional $43.00. So It cost me 47.00 total to stop by this store to buy creamer. I wont go there again. The owner said the guy from diamond is nuts and he will call the supervisor to complain and that this has happened before. This is the way their employees act? They get you to walk away and pull this ticket and run scam? Diamond Parking has still not responded to my complaint. Unfortunately for Hillcrest Market they have lost yet another regular customer thanks to the unethical and downright nasty way Diamond Parking's employees act on the companies behalf. Why does the city allow this to happen to citizens and visitors alike? People need to be warned about how Diamond Parking does business. Its companies like Diamond Parking that really make Seattle a horrible place. How is this "parking industry" even regulated? Thanks to this employee now I am curious. It seems they can get away with anything and the citizens of Seattle and visitors are paying dearly. I was exhausted and needed an onion for my planned dinner. So I walked to this place, just a few blocks away, in the rain (of course). All I had was a credit card so I looked for a sign saying there was a minimum purchase for CCs. No sign, but I still looked for something extra to buy and all there was was overpriced junk food or staples I already had. So I grabbed my onion and stepped up to pay. I was promptly told there was a $5 minimum. When I told the guy all I had was a CC he just said ,"no" and took the onion off the counter. So I walked out and will not go back. Would've had no issue with this if he had been nice about it and if it had been posted. I will not go back to this store. read more

This place is not closed. Not only are they not closed but they are about to open a taqueria inside the market. I just had a sample of the tacos and let me tell you, these are DELICIOUS. Hand made tortillas, a delicious thick guacamole spicy salsa, and al pastor meat. Besides the delicious tacos, this market is well stocked with everything and anything you could possibly need. I was just shooting the breeze with the friendly owner this morning, and thought, I should write a review. Besides the handy location, I'm a fan of their handy & eclectic stock. I always end up browsing the housewares aisle and finding some oddball thing I need. (I also love their prominently displayed sock bin as you come in the door. Great for winter emergencies and impromptu gifts to the homeless.) They also give good prices on my dietary staples, like Pure Leaf bottled tea. One item they've just started carrying is a huge hit: little individually wrapped madeleines. I haven't seen these particular ones anywhere else; maybe they have some mystery bakery source. So good--super fresh, moist, and light, they sell out quickly. A few reviewers mention having antagonistic brushes with staff. I will say that the folks on day shift tend to be a bit more cheerful. But I figure that working the drunk shift at a convenient store takes its psychic toll, especially if you're an owner. There's a certain atmosphere that can overtake some convenience stores, when the owners go over to the dark side and become almost anti-customer. Hillcrest definitely isn't in that camp. You can tell they care about their store. There's also something friendly about the way they always keep the front doors open--I like that I can just veer sideways and pop in for a quick purchase without having to shove at doors, jingle bells, and negotiate paths with other people. read more

I'm a frequent customer of this store and appreciate the selection they have. They saved me a long walk to the supermarket numerous times. Prices on some of the items is a little high, but hey it's a convenience store. The staff is very courteous and respectul. The burgers here are EXCELLENT! I don't think they have a specific name, other than the fact that they are a part of the convenience store. The man who makes the burgers (I do not know his name) is very kind and will make you the best burger and fries you could ever hope for. Decently priced too. read more
