All I can say is that they don't live up to their promises over Free meal because you have to have 10 punches on one card and not a multiple cards which can be combined. Over all good attitude​ of staff waving at my daughter. Friendly kind staff, the fried dumplings slightly overcooked brought to life with the sushi and mushrooms, the fired donuts were fluffy and hot so super good and prices are incredibly fair. Not much for buffets, but my daughter talked me into it, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was really clean, and the food was good. I liked that the ice cream was in individual cardboard cups with lids on them. A different Chinese buffet in town does not do it this way, and it's gross. WOW! My first review doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and it is probably due to the fact that eating here can make you stupid. I'm really upset that I can't find a China Buffett here in Boise, real upset. There really isn't anything better than a buffet, especially when it involves Chinese food. MMMMM, general chicken, MMMMM, stir-fry. My mouth is already watering...but not for City Buffet. I rather go to Wal-Mart and grab the frozen general chicken and heat it up in a microwave. I had to give this place anther try just because i feel one expiernce shouldnt be a full measure of what one has to offer but i was once again dissappointed. They claim to have over 200 items which when i counted was less then half of that. The sushi was once again horrible and down right awful. The rest of the food was plain, bland and flavorless. Servers are bland and not friendly as is there food. Deserts are the same card board tasting excuse me saying but crap. Ths is my final time trying this place and wont be back anytime and definitly wont reccommend this place to any one. read more

I've been waiting for City Buffet to open and went there for lunch on a Saturday. I was pleased with the selections from soup to sushi to dessert and everything was fresh and tasty. You just have to remember this is a Chinese buffet so it's not gourmet dining. I like that they give a senior's discount. I love dim sum and there were several types and I went back for seconds. This is a very big place and it was crowded and noisy, but the food was good and I'll be going back for lunch again soon. read more

Went not long after it first opened with hopes of some good chinese and my hopes were crushed. Even though it was packed (it was an obstacle to get to and from our table) the food really had no flavor and it seemed everything tasted the same. The atmosphere was very poor. If you're hungry and want to eat now, and you do not have the patience to wait for your food to be served, then stop by the City Buffet. As soon as you get seated, you can get right back up to start stacking your plate with massive amounts of food. They have an enormus variety of Chinese food...from seafood, beef, chicken, sushi and salads. They offer a lot of food, but there are only a few items I eat from their selection, and it's usually the seafood; mussels, fish, crab, sushi, etc... I read a lot of complaints about the sushi, and the sushi is not their specialty. They only have a few types of rolls available, so I wouldn't come here specifically for a Japanese food item at a Chinese restaurant. This place does get crowded on weekend afternoons. read more

Scary. A couple of the things I tried were okay ... but the the remainder (and I sampled quite a few) were dangerously off-temperature. They were NOT kept as hot as they should been (or cold, for cold foods) for safety. Quite disturbing. I mentioned this to the server and to the cashier ... both just shrugged. My wife and. I went for lunch. The restaurant is attractive and the staff is attentive, however, the food, while pleasing to the eye, lacked taste. I was really surprised by this because I'd visited in the past and it tasted OK. I understand that cooks sometimes have to "dumb things down" for an uneducated palate, but this food was absolutely tasteless, really, no taste. The hot and sour soup was neither, just a bland and un appealing taste, the Chinese "hot" mustard was cut with some kind of mayo or something because it wasn't hot at all. Soy sauce, a source of umami flavor couldn't help. The egg rolls were greasy, the general's chicken was blah. The low mein had a terrible greasy taste. Good chinese food is not a thing in Boise. As much as I want to eat at buffets, I don't, simply because I don't want to spend ten dollars to eat greasy noodles and deep fried things covered in questionable sauces and be hungry and/or vomiting very soon after. True story. But there are times that I cannot resist my chinese food cravings. So after scouring yelp for reviews (There has to be something better than Great Wall!) I decided to try City Buffet. Now, this is a place that I drive past frequently, but never would have entered based on the outside appearance alone. My husband and I went on a Sunday around 12:30. The place was reasonably full, but not packed, and we were immediately seated. Our waitress took our drink orders and we went to the buffet. I don't pay attention to what I eat a buffets, I just eat. There were many different choices on all spectrums - the basic chinese restaurant dishes like Gen. Chicken etc, fried foods, seafood, desserts, even a sushi bar that had more than just a california roll. I enjoyed most of what I ate. The friend rice seemed a little off to me but it wasn't unedible. My husband said he liked it. The piece of sushi I had (said it was cooked salmon) was very fishy, but I don't go to chinese places to eat sushi. Nothing was overly greasy, nothing was cold or seemed like it had sat out too long, all the empty trays were quickly replaced by the staff and my empty plates were removed after each trip. I think going during lunch time was key. I've had too many late night buffet experiences to know that chinese food is not good after it's sat. The sunday lunch price was 10 bucks compared to the 7 it is during the week. Overall not a bad experience - I could definitely see myself eating here again. read more

I went here because of a suggestion from my friend (who just so happens to be from China). I must say, the food is pretty good. The egg tarts were my favorite dish. The selection is pretty good, they even offer sushi for those who like to eat raw fish and rice. They offer some made to order fried rice/noodle dishes. Wide variety of food, and while nothing was off in taste, everything seemed like it was a day old and reheated. Sushi was good, but same thing...refrigerated last night and brought out? The staff were efficient, but no one seemed to want to be there. Lots of subtle scowling as they rushed about. Everything was clean and well maintained, as well. After hearing about City Buffet from their commercials I thought I would give it a try for Christmas Dinner. It was very busy but we were able to secure our seats fairly quick. I would say the food is okay but not something to write home about. I forgot what it was that I ate but it left a weird after taste in my mouth. The chicken dishes weren't bad but I just wasn't impressed. I doubt that I'll be in a hurry to return here and would say there is better Chinese food in Boise and the Treasure Valley. Did not have any problems here. The food was all good, not overly salted. I did not care for the way they made the lobster though. They should just steam it and call it good without all the extra hubbub. That would be my top recommendation. The bathrooms are clean, the environment is nice and very classy... certainly a lot quieter than their competitor down the road. I find this atmosphere a lot more relaxing. I fell in love with the steak at the grill in the back. So good. The sushi was ok.. loved the egg flour soup and the desserts were about standard. The food was pretty much all good, there wasn't anything I didn't really like. I loved the clams, the mussels, the seafood mix, the green beans... not to much the waiting staff was very polite and friendly. Really great people. If I lived nearby, I'd be here weekly, or at least on a bi-weekly schedule. I think I prefer this to the buffet down the street. read more

Just left this restaurant, I had been here a few years ago and unfortunately today's visit was just a reminder of why it had been so long since we'd eaten here. The food was mediocre, nothing great. Having read through all the reviews of this place, I am now utterly convinced that GAG had one of those moments that remain in our memory. Not knowing quite what to expect, I approached City Buffet with the eye of a skeptic, walking through their doors at 1:30 PM yesterday, right as the lunch crowd was beginning to leave. I was greeted up the Asian staff, and let to my table by a young Anglo, and once she seated me, her only remark was "what do you want to drink?". She spoke so softly she had to repeat herself. On to the food. I sampled nearly everything (on my plate, not noshing). The spring rolls, although fried, were quite tasty. The egg rolls are served cut in thirds and were acceptable- this IS a buffet, after all- not greasy at all- and typical of most Asian buffets. The "Teriyaki Chicken" is served Yakitori style, on a bamboo skewer, and if you don't get a fresh skewer, can be rather dry (the skewer on my second trip). The Kung Pao and General Tso's chickens were both moist, tender, and, while pleasantly flavored, had very little spice heat. I have had both in other establishments that leave your taste buds in agony from the heat. Once again, consider that this is a buffet. The grill selections were rather bleak, with no bean sprouts available- rather strange- so their hibachi grill was the low point of my experience; also, the sauces were mislabeled on the sneeze guard. The lo mein, rice noodle, sesame chicken, fried rice and broccoli chicken were all typical of most Asian buffets- acceptable if unremarkable. All in all, everything was acceptable, nothing was remarkable. Nearly everything was fresh, being constantly restocked during my visit. No glaring problems (tongs and/or serving spoons on the floor). Two and a half stars on this rating scale is actually more appropriate. I will return, but it's not worth a special trip to Boise from Caldwell. Now, the Great Wall Buffet in Meridian- THAT place is worth a serious commute... read more

This is a typical large Chinese buffet common in most places we have visited. Food is meh, but it is a large buffet so the quest is to stuff yourself. There is a very good variety of food with a small selection of sushi, but several flavors or real ice cream. Several of the foods were not warm - I do not know if they heat the trays or they just sit there. The place is serviceable though not real clean. There were very few Asian customers (hint: for authentic and good Chinese food, go to a restaurant with lots of Chinese customers). There were many large groups and the atmosphere was party with a feeding frenzy at times at the food trays. I even saw one guy with a plate full of ice cream - probably at least half a gallon's worth. If you want gourmet food, go somewhere else. If you want to stuff your face, this place works - very good value . read more

I don't know what happened to this place. We used to go here all the time. But last few times we went to this City Buffet, the food has been terrible. Completely dried out. You can tell it's been sitting out under the heat lamps for a long time. The tables have been sticky and unclean. The meat selection for the Mongolian bbq was terrible looking. The last time we went here, about 3 weeks ago, I got really bad food poisoning. It lasted for almost 2 weeks. We will never return to this place ever again. It's sad because this place used to be really good. I hope they return to their high standards sometime soon. read more

This place is clean and friendly. I'm not a huge buffet person but here, you get what you pay for. Avoid weekends when they charge you for their version of "lobster". It's their version of lobster and I didn't care for it. Hate to say this but it's a "typical" Chinese buffet. We go on occasion but not often. I've certainly had worse food in Boise. I agree, "GAG!" The place is filthy and the service is slow and rude. Watched one of the staff drop service tongs on the floor under everyone's feet only to shove it back into the tray of food above. A woman patron grabbed them to scoop some food, and I physically grabbed them away from her to warn her of what just happened. She was repulsed. A manager-of-sorts came over to ask if there was a problem. I told him what the staff member had done with the filthy tongs off the floor. He simply said he'd "talk to her". Needless to say, he did not talk talk to her, that I noticed, since she continued along the trays of food wiping the area with her funky towel (that she's most likey dropped on the floor hundreds of times). Sickening! Water was also spilled all over our table as we were seated with no attempt, or offer, to clean up the mess. They simply let it run onto the floor. The place is not worth getting food borne illness due to a blatant lack of cleanliness! China Grand Buffet is great! read more

you get what you expect from an all you can eat chinese buffet, which is not much. The food is just so so, most looks dried out from sitting too long, the sushi was low grade (again what do you expect). i did think the service (drinks) was good. The little girl working the tables had only been in the US for 6 weeks, had a big smile and was happy to be working, no matter what she was doing, that makes you appreciate what we have even more. not much for atmosphere, very loud, open dinning area. for desert, they do have a larger selection and you can actually scoop ice cream from tubs like baskin robbins... so interesting. So, if you're looking for really good food, go elsewhere, if you're looking to eat till you're bloated and have some good service... you might as well try it out read more

This was by far the better visit that we have had here! My favorite thing of all are the sesame balls! It wasn't overly packed on the night we went. Our waitress was great, she took great care of us. The buffet was actually the best I had seen it. The fresh fruit was good along with the dinner items. I will say their stir fry green beans are not as good as China Grand Buffet's but they were good! The squid was great along with the various chicken dishes. This visit satisfied our craving for chinese! read more

Worst customer service ever!!!! My client and I go there once in a while, I never have problem with requesting separate checks. When I asked the front desk for my client's own receipt, she just refused to give him one. She was a real rude lady!! She shouldn't be working at the front desk if she can't be friendly and accommodate people!!!!! Never going back there ever again!! read more

Came here with a friend that said he seen them on tv and it wasnt very good. The place is new and looks all pretty but the food is gross. It may just be that im used to a different style but i didnt care for anything really. didnt even get full from the meal because i wasnt enjoying anything. My friend was less pleased then I.
