My hubby and I were planning on dining else where..but when there line was a mile long and it was cold and rainy..we decided to stop in. This is a counter service. So we go up and give the menu a lookie over and decide on pulled pork sandwich for me and brisket for him (he is from Texas). I go for hushpuppies and beans while we gets gumbo and cornbread. We pay for our meal and go sit and wait to hear our name. It doesnt take long before our meal is ready and the hubs gets and picks it up. Everything is served on a big tray..kinda like BBQ tapas! Everything is amazing!!! Oh my word. We gobbled it up and I didnt have room for cake and ended up taking it home. They have a fixings bar with great pickles and swine wine! They have all kind of beers including your standards and new ones. They also have a soda cooler with soda in glass bottles but all they had out at the time was root beer. This is a little pricier that your usual BBQ joint. It was around $30 for 2 sandwiches, 4 sides, 2 beers, and cake. The sandwiches do not include sides (my only complaint). They are $2.19 or 2 for $2.99. The staff is great and friendly and the food is incredible so we will certianly be back soon. read more

I'm all for some fast casual bbq, and I think there are a number of places that have done it really well. We met friends here the other night for dinner. As first timers, I couldn't quite make out whether or not they have meal deals/combos from the menu... our friends were a bit confused by this as well because it seems they used to, but don't anymore. I got the pulled pork sandwich, corn casserole, green beans, and a drink. The sides were yummy- I'd definitely recommend the corn casserole! The meat was moist and tender, with good smoke flavor, but seemed to be lacking in terms of rub. The sauce you added yourself- I tried their original, sweet, and swine wine (eastern NC style). Unfortunately, it's hard to get enough sauce on the sandwich once it's already assembled without making a complete and utter mess of things, especially thinner kinds like the eastern NC type. The lack of sauce (and coleslaw) on the sandwich led to a finished product that didn't quite scratch the itch for NC style bbq that I was hoping I could satiate with this sandwich. If I were to come back, I'd probably try something like the ribs, but (personally) I might go to a place that commits more to one style of bbq or another than a middle-of-the-road approach with no sauce/rub. It just leaves a bit to be desired if you're looking for a specific type of BBQ. read more

The "crust" of the meat was TOO salty, but if you take the crust out, the meat was actually ok. The entrance of the restaurant smelled like my son's poopy diaper--- I'm not sure if that's the ambiance that they were after, it just smelled funny to me. Portions were great. Delicious bbq. They have a large selection of sauces, something for everyone. Their brisket and ribs are very tender. The sausage is smoked well and the turkey is juicy. We had the judge sampler and 2 kids meals. We love this place and it is our go to bbq place. I know it's a chain, but a heck better than Dickey's! They have a decent variety of options, but quite a few times some items came out lukewarm; which I assume were pulled out of a warming bin. Plenty of side options and Tuesday rib day is a winner. I think they increased the price a bit, but at $1.35 per rib, its a great value and the ribs are very good. This location tends to get crowded for lunch and dinner, but there is plenty of space for dining and there is always someone cleaning the dining area and taking care of trays. Their sauces(all three) are not my favorites; all a bit on the sweet side; which is the only reason its not a 5 star review. I downloaded the app and keep earning points. read more

One for the convenience of online ordering, the other for the delicious potato salad and the third for the guy who helped me when I went inside to pick up curbside order. Aside from this unfortunately they failed to deliver what I had anticipated to be a delicious bbq lunch and service. My brisket was very salty and hard. I couldn't even chew it. Ended up in the garbage along with my collards that were also undercooked. I ordered with plenty of time. When I arrived I called curbside to pick up and called in to let them know I was there. I waited 10 min. then went inside and picked up my own food and served my own drink plus condiments. I was the only one in the pick up and the restaurant didn't appear to be busy. It was clean and cozy and the guy who was in the back cooking was friendly. But I felt like I was forgotten or ignored. read more

There will be rivaled arguments about BBQ standards. However City Barbeque raises that standard well above any other. The price may be a bit higher but the portions are plentiful. I would suggest starting out sharing a plate at first. I ordered the Sampler Platter. The amount of food was overwhelming but great. The polish sausage was the best I had ever tasted. My two side items were the corn pudding and baked beans. Both were fresh with plenty of seasoning and flavor. The baked beans had a sweet molasses flavor mixed with a hint of smoke. I absolutely loved it. The staff is very friendly and will allow you to sample anything on the menu before you make your selection. I found that to be very helpful. Plenty of parking close to the door. You will need it because if you eat too much you may want to borrow a wheel barrel to get back to your car. Overall this was well worth the money. read more

We recently moved to NC from OK and have looked everywhere for a good BBQ like we are used to. We like that KCBS/Texas style and City Barbecue nailed it. This brisket is some of the best I've EVER had and I've had the privilege of judging the Tulsa Art of Barbecue competition a couple times. We will definitely be back. What's great about this place is the variety of BBQ. The Texas brisket is excellent as well as the 'Bama Pulled Chicken & Carolina Pulled Pork. The big surprise is the Gumbo, I was not expecting much but, once I tried it it is something I go back for by itself. As far as the BBQ the smokers are on-site, and everything is made on-preme. Thought it is a chain it is run like a family restaurant. Price of the food is about average running from $8-$12 dollars for most meals, which is average in Carolina. If you don't know what to get order a "Sample Of The City". You get pulled pork, brisket, pulled chicken, sausage & turkey. You'll know what to get next time. read more

I was skeptical about a BBQ joint from Ohio having decent fare compared to local NC establishments, but I was willing to give it a try. I have to say that the food was excellent. My daughter had a beef brisket sandwich, mac & cheese, and potato salad. I had a pulled pork sandwich, creamy slaw and hush puppies. The potato salad had a little too much salt for my liking, but that's personal preference and it didn't stop me from finishing off what my daughter left. The portions were very generous - we were both very full when we left and my daughter, who without exception has a snack in the afternoon, didn't eat again till supper. All of the staff, from the cashier to the counter staff to the hostess, were extremely polite and helpful, not to mention patient (as it was our first time visiting). The hostess checked on us a number of times and even offered samples of items we hadn't ordered. We had more than enough food so we accepted a piece of chocolate cake to take home (it was amazing, btw). The counter staff ensured we had a fresh order or hush puppies and even brought it to our table. Everyone was very friendly and made us feel welcome and like we were more than just customers. Outstanding, all around. The only drawback is that it is more expensive than traditional NC BBQ restaurants and obviously what you're paying for is the atmosphere. My daughter even called it "fancy" (if you consider that good eastern NC BBQ is typically served in a building that looks like it should be condemned, you understand her comment). I wouldn't say it is cost-prohibitive, though, and portions are easily big enough to split, saving some money there. We'll definitely visit again. Another tip - it tends to get crowded at peak meal times and seating is somewhat limited so I suggest going early or late. We were there at 11:45 am on a Thursday and just beat the lunch rush. I imagine it gets pretty busy on weekends as well. read more

I must say, they cook good pork. As a native of N.C. living in the purgatory of Western versus Eastern styles that's true to word. Today, was a pleasant experience . Cashier seemed respectful but patient, since I wanted to try everything. Hate that the pecan muffins where out. The gentleman running orders, nice touch by pointing out each item as if at the table. Then bagged it to go. Noticed the prep cook was getting a lot of orders but was not slowing any. The BBQ, not as minced as a typical cut. Instead it was a larger mince with a perfect bark balance. Not too dry, even after reheating it later. Inside gave the feel of BBQ joint. Next time I will take time to sit down. I liked that I could actually smell the smoke coming in like the way it should. I've lived in NC for almost ten years now and finally!! Good bbq! I was starting to think I'd have to go back to Phoenix to get some...yes you heard right. The pulled pork is amazing to say the least. That swine wine sauce could win an award. All the other sauces were great too, and I never like every sauce on the table. Oh that potato salad!!! YUM. I was glad they allowed tastings because I've been disappointed way too many times with it at other places, so when I tasted the potato salad I was thrilled how good it was. Again, FINALLY a place that knows what they're doing. And come to find out they are from Ohio of all places...kind of crazy that the best barbeque in the capital area of north Carolina comes from guys from Ohio. Oh well I'm just glad it's here! So the food was okay. I will say you have done really good with the corn pudding. That was great... but yalls TEA is not from the south. It was awful... the tea you had in the dispenser thing was old I could tell by the taste... your dinning room was a absolute wreck and extremely gross (I'd hate to see the bathrooms) so I know the tables weren't cleaned today so thanks for leaving potential covid germs everywhere... so yea work on the tea (seriously the worst tea I've ever had and clean your dinning hall and make sure your tea/utensil bar is restocked frequently) you can do this!!!!! read more

The staff is always friendly. I used to eat at the one in Cary and now I eat here because it's closer to my house. The food is always fresh. The portions are hearty. I have never had a bad experience at City BBQ. Today I was helped by the guy with the Giants hat and he remember me from being a patron of the Cary location. City barbeque is definitely hit or miss for me. The prices are relatively high for the portion size and more than once my brisket has been cold and basically flavorless. I normally order a meal with a chocolate cake as a dessert for my daughter who loves it. At first the cake portion was okay, but the last two times l have ordered my meal with the cake, the cakes l get are very very small. For a 4 dollar cake l should get a large sizeable portion. Finally got around to trying City Barbeque. We had pulled pork and smoked turkey and both were great. The turkey stayed so moist it left juices in the container! Also enjoyed the gumbo, fried okra, and hush puppies as sides. They also have quite the variety of dipping sauces that you can chose from. They have ones for whatever style of BBQ you enjoy, vinegar based, mustard based, and the good ol sweet and smokey(which is always my favorite.) Out of everything I had, the gumbo was the best. The flavor with the smoked sausage and rice was spot on. Definitely enjoyable but I can't say there's much that sets it apart from other Carolina BBQ joints. read more

BEST BBQ IN THE AREA!!! This is definitely my favorite local BBQ joint. Both the pulled pork and brisket are amazing and have a nice smokey flavor that U cannot get at most BBQ places around here. They also have several different sauces to choose from which is perfect for someone like me who likes to pour different sauces on my pork. The side dishes are out of this world and much different than other local BBQ places in the area. The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff is very friendly. This is by far my favorite BBQ in Garner, you can get a ton of food for a very fair price. We usually get the sampler with brisket, ribs, chicken, and pork. That feeds our family of three for two days! I like the sauce selection, and they have some decent sides too. Once upon a timer hey had an amazing BBQ gumbo, I miss that!
