This spot is fantastic. The food is authentic and the service is down right impeccable. When we pulled up the lights were off but we saw the back door was open. We knocked on the back door and asked if they were closed. The woman that answered said yes but wait one second. After a minute or so she came back out and said okay you can come in from the front. They opened just for us. Incredible Our server was incredible. Never experienced such great service. Truly a remarkable young woman. When she mentioned the fresh drinks they offer, we asked about them. She explained each drink and then asked if we wanted to try them. She came back with a tray with little cups of each drink for every single one of us. That was above and beyond. I felt taken care of. Food was always served with a smile. Extremely polite and very sweet. As for the food, fantastic. Authentic Mexican food. Me and my friends were all feeling tacos, so we went taco crazy. My favorite was the Tinga de pollo. Granted this isn't the nicest looking part of New Brunswick, but this place has to be tried and visited. It is authentically Mexican. I'm updating my review because I was overly impressed with Cinco De Mayo last weekend. We had an unexpected group of 13 planned for dinner. I called at 6:30p and asked if they would have room for our group in an hour and they said that would be fine. When we showed up, they had a whole table all set up for us with chips and their three signature salsa's already on the table! We went there for a quick dinner last night and came out of here STUFFED. The food here is cheaper than a meal in McDonald's and definitely better. I had a marinated pork burrito and my bf ordered the Mexican style beef; both were alright and portions were big. Here's a few addtional points I wanted to highlight: 1) This place is pretty small and gets filled up quickly. Upon entering, just find any seat and sit down. 2) The complementary chips they serve with 3 types of salsa sauce (love the green sauce!) are amazing. If I was to rate this alone, it would be at least 4-stars! They even refilled the chips after we devoured the first rounds... 3) Service was friendly but slow; that's okay though, because you will be able to enjoy the chips as a free appetizer while waiting for your food. 4) The neighborhood seemed kind of sketchy, but there's a small private lot by the restaurant for customer parking, so that makes things a bit easier. Cinco de Mayo called to verify something in my order (I ordered torta ahogada, chicken salad, Mexican tamale, and beet juice). She wanted to verify want kind of ahogada I wanted. She spoke only Spanish. Lucky for her, so did I, but I told her that wasn't a good business model lol. Love the authenticity but if she didn't luck out with a spanish speaker how would we have communicated? I absolutely LOVE this place. This place is cheap and hits the spot when you're craving authentic Mexican food. As with most Mexican restaurants, they serve you chips and salsa while you wait for your order to come out though the wait isn't long. I usually order chicken flautas and sometimes a chicken taco. SO good. Those two and a Coke will run me around $10. My best friend usually orders a chicken burrito for $4.50. It's MASSIVE. It'll feed 2-3 people. Cinco De Mayo is quite a trek from the Rutgers-NB campus. The neighborhood is sketch. A quick google search will tell you that someone was stabbed outside of this place a few months back. That's not enough to keep me from going back, though. The patrons are mostly folks from the neighborhood but students do come here. On one visit, this place was completely filled with college/grad students. The waitresses are nice, too. They don't speak much English, but they'll get your order right. read more

I hate when a place plays with my heart like this. So I went back to Cinco De MAyo last Thursday and it was awesome. So awesome in fact that I went back the very next day. So The first time I got my usual the Burrito Diablo (pretty much the same thing being advertised by TacoHell as the "Smothered Burrito" but 10x better, bigger, and cheaper.) I got my burrito with al pastor. It was nice and big unlike my previous let down that subsequently ended in a 2 start review. When I went back on Friday I got....wait for it......Burrito Diablo!!!!! I don't like to be predictable so I got it with the Barbacoa I read about in somebody else's review and it was awesome. Both times I sat at a table alone, but they still brought me as much chips and 3 salsa's as they would for a group of 4. I like that because since it's just me I can gorge on ALL the chips to myself. The chips come in handy to scoop all those burrito pieces that some how fall back on the plate between being scooped up and entering your mouth. I love this place all over again. Oh wait.....you ask why not 5 stars? Well for several reasons...... 1. I don't mind tap water, but let it run for a minute to get cold....don't just pour the luke warm water over ice. 2. If anybody touch's the jukebox the music is insanely loud. It's like club loud for no reason. 3. Consistency - It turns out that the food is just better on the certain days. Thur, Fri, Sat, and Sun. you'll get a nice big burrito....on Monday.....not so much. I guess it depends on the cook and I do not like that 1 bit. 3 strikes but 4 stars? I was visiting my sister at Rutgers, who LOVES burritos but wasn't exactly sure about driving through New Bruns on her own to check this place out. Yes, it's not in the greatest neighborhood but this makes for some authentic Mexican eats for sure. All I can say, is it's definitely authentic. When Latinos/Hispanics themselves, myself included, are stopping by, you know it's legitimate. They servers aren't exactly the most friendly, but they get the job done. They start you off with chips and a few different types of salsas, all pretty spicy in my opinion. If you're not a fan of spicy food, you should probably just stick to the chips. We wanted to try a burrito but knew we each would not be able to finish one, so we split the Ranchero Burrito w/ Marinated Pork (Al Pastor) and ordered 2 additional Carne Asada Tacos + guac. The burrito about about 75% rice, 15% beans and 10% pork so this fell a little short in my opinion. Even though the components were flavorful, there were no veggies or sour cream and we definitely wanted more meat. The spicy pico + side of guacamole we ordered, definitely elevated it. As for the tacos, they told us the tortillas were homemade, but I've had enough to know the difference between a packaged one and fresh... these were definitely not made to order. The meat was tender and flavorful but it was missing some acid. I added some guacamole, but all we needed were a few lime wedges. Overall, we were disappointed since the reviews were good and other people in the area had spoken so highly of it but walked away with a couple conclusions: 1. It was cheap as hell - that alone is a reason to go back. For everything above, we paid $15 without tip! 2. Maybe we just didn't order the right items - next time (if ever one presents itself), I would consider something a little less "Americanized" i.e. mole, tortas, etc. 3. It's BYO 4. I have been going to this place while I was in college and it always seemed to be good. I walked in recently and decided to try something new so I got the rabbit which looked good on the menu. As soon as I got my plate I saw to small pieces of what they called rabbit but to the taste it tasted like chicken. I have eaten rabbits pretty often but this was disgusting. I expressed my dissatisfaction to the waitress and she laughed. Later a boy who works there comes to me and says you have to pay for the plate. I told him that you did not present the plate as in the menu and he said we don't care you have to pay for demanding me to pay. Take other reviews who claim it's not as "authentic" as places like Chipotle (like seriously, dude?) with a grain of salt. This place is AWESOME. It's where the Mexicans go to eat Mexican. Ordered food online through the Eat24 service. Order was not large at all (one burrito and a few tacos to hit the $15 minimum) and it took 2.25 hours to get my food after connecting both the Eat24 staff and the restaurant by phone. The yelp service told me that the order would take 45-60min, then the restaurant texted me telling me to download an app to track my order which told me another 30min, then when I called I was told it would be another 20-25 when I called....no apology for the frankly absurd amount of time it took them. My company had already given up and left, leaving me with two meals of lukewarm food to eat HOURS after I ordered. If there was some issue, the restaurant should have let me know. The food itself was alright. Out of what I tried the salted beef taco was the best. I imagine if it wasn't for the experience I would be willing to order from them again but their lazy, disrespectful service will prevent me from ever doing that. read more

I ordered the vegan house special burrito. I saw this on a poster on the wall so I was excited they had vegan options. However when the burrito came out it had sour cream and cheese all over it. I asked if this was perhaps vegan cheese, but nope it was real cheese. I asked if the burrito was vegan and the waiter said "yes, on the inside!" I didnt want to cause any problems so i simply wiped the dairy off on top and ate half of the burrito. However when I warmed up the burrito at home in the microwave, there was cheese melting on the inside! I didnt notice this at the restaurant and I was very disappointed that the waiter lied to me. Cinco is a small Mexican restaurant located in the middle of the crap side of New Brunswick. The sketchy exterior prepares you for the even sketchier interior. As you sit in the small dinging room next to what is probably a drug deal going on, a nice Mexican girl will serve you free chips and a HUGE burrito for 7 bucks. The burrito is not great and the meat is most likely not chicken/beef, but the portion size is insane. This is the go to spot for all of my friends after any sort of function in New Brunswick, the staff is always so friendly considering sometimes there will be 20 weird looking punk kids rolling up ordering everything without cheese and meat because most of them are vegan but they are always SUPER accommodating and sometimes even give us free appitizers! The burritos are huge and are so cheap. The 3 salsas they give you with unlimited chips are amazing, i could go in and just eat that if i could.
