I received a phone call from a "manager" and we had a good discussion about the seating problems we too frequently encountered at Chuy's. I explained how much I am a superfan of Chuy's! He apologized that the "host/hostess" stand had been the breakdown. He offered to send a gift card which I declined and he insisted. He took my address and promised to send the cards on Monday and here we wait now a few weeks later! He should've never insisted because NOW it's the principle of the thing. Don't lie! I now feel more like there are management problems at the Summit location and not necessarily the host/hostess stand because honesty is important. This was our first time here and we let the server know and she was kind she brought us out the rainbow sampler sauces. This place has a very festive atmosphere with its colorful decor and different room layouts. I always enjoy looking around at the walls and ceilings to see the uniqueness of each area. The wait time on most nights isn't typically more than 20 minutes. If you do end up waiting longer, you can soothe your appetite by digging into a bottomless pit of complimentary chips and salsa. My favorite part about Chuy's though, is its diverse menu. Containing a wide range of Mexican dishes, this is one of the few restaurants that I go back to and try more than just the 3 or 4 dishes I normally get. The food though, is only slightly above average. Pricing is quite fair because of the gigantic portions, but I have yet to be so impressed with a dish that I would get it the next couple of times I went. Service matters a lot to me at a restaurant, and although most Chuy's staff have been nice, I've always felt pressured by them more so than at other places. I have been here 3 times and have always had an awesome experience. You can't beat the Hwy 280 view from their outside patio seating. Plus, their bar is inside/outside, so it's a win-win. Chuys... where do I start? It's one of my fave places to go. I like to do the first come first serve seating outside, and you also get a nice view. Now on to food, most of the time I get the guacamole tacos. Yep, thats right... it's literally guacamole in a soft taco and they give you cheese, lettuce, and tomato salsa on the side to add in as you please. The tacos also come with a side of rice and beans. Sometimes you can catch me ordering the cheese quesadillas, which are really good too. The salsa is usually really hot and spicy due to the jalapeños and has loads of tomatoes but it's still good. Apparently I never wrote a review of Chuy's, despite having gone two nights in a row, so here's my opportunity to make up for that. I was curious if all the hype surrounding Chuy's was due to the fact that it was new, it was new and at the Summit, or it was new, at the Summit, and located near the not-quite-as-new Flip burger "boutique". Turns out all that's probably true, but w/out even considering that, Chuy's seems to be able to hold its own just based on its food alone. The first time I visited the place, our party was originally at Flip and opted to "defect" over the burger border if you will, making our Flip waitress quite annoyed. (Sorry Flip, but when I want a burger, recognizing the toppings is kind of a requirement in my book.) So we hopped over and had some great friggin' food! I tried the "Chicka-Chicka Boom Boom" which was fantastic (check out chuys dot com for a look at a few menu offerings, including this one), and had a chance to try some sopapillas, which were just right after waaaayy too much in the belly. (Bottomless chips and salsa at the table are a great kickstart to the meal as well.) The second night's visit introduced the "big as yo' face" burrito (which is NOT false advertising to be sure) to my overindulgence, and it was just as delicious as night #1. And despite my not being the typical drinker, I decided to give a Chuy's mojito a try on that warm summers-end evening, and it was pretty tasty. It was my first so I don't have a basis for comparison, but the mint, limey, sugary combination hit the spot and went well with the ridiculously-ginormous burrito. And of course since I enjoyed night #1's sampling of the sopapillas, I had to give 'em another go - and bueno the second time around as well. So, my final thoughts on Chuy's - I'm not sure a 90 minute wait just to sit on the outside patio is worth it (when the weather's nice enough), but trying the place out I think is. The restaurant atmosphere and food options present a slight uniqueness that I'd imagine will have people coming back again and again, me being one of them. This was my first Chuy's experience and I must say I was quite impressed. They market as a Tex-Mex type of eatery and I must say it seems to be more Mexican then Texan. With that said the food is outstanding, service is great, and the prices are not crazy expensive (like Superior Grill for example). Nice decor, helpful staff, solidly good food, a few interesting perks like the choices of sauces together make Chuy's a good choice. But, I have to say that it is really no better than some well established nicer Tex-Mex offerings, most notably La Paz and Superior Grill. The hip, trendy, super stream-lined atmosphere of the Summit and everything there is fine but creates a lack of true character for everything there. This Chuy's has a few bonuses Good: Great view of the hills in north shelby county from the patio My Dad is happy he can eat at Chuy's without having to drive to Texas. Bad: Parking. I mean. Damn. There is a covered parking deck but you have to walk through an alley with a dumpster and all around the patio. Sidenote: How is it that the summit is such a new development and the parking is this ill-planned? Yes. A chain. I'll probably lose points for yelping a chain, giving it 4 stars, nonetheless. But this one is DIFFERENT. I promise. Plus, we have a sweet past, me and Chuy's. My first introduction to Chuy's was about 18 years ago in Houston, Texas. The next time I went to Chuy's was years later, on my first visit to Austin for a Lance Armstrong Foundation event. The ORIGINAL one --- On Barton Springs. And I learned that I was addicted. So much so that we went there three times over the course of our long weekend visit (yes. It's THAT good - and no matter where I am, I will do that - it's like a comfort thing, I guess). Chuy's is one of "those" places. When new neighbors moved back from Houston, we sat around and talked about the jalapeno cream sauce, the cheese dip and those outta this freaking world tortillas while we, literally, drooled. So when Chuy's announced they were opening a restaurant in Alabama, I planned my work week around being there the first day they opened! It was a competition between us neighbors - who was going to get there first! I won. So ... The FOOD: The salsa is good. Not out of this world, but fresh - mostly tomato, onion, peppers and cilantro. It's salsa fresca, which makes it a little watery for my taste, but who wants to load up on chips and salsa when you have SO MANY MORE OPTIONS! The jalapeno cream sauce is TO. DIE. FOR. End of story. Just trust me. And ya kinda gotta be "in the know" to get a bowl of it. My favorite bartender / server, "T" knows what I like ... he pours me a Father Agave, no salt, gets me chips, salsa and a big ole bowl of JCS when I walk in, then puts in my order for queso ($5.89) and those TASTY fresh, hand-rolled tortillas! For dinner, I have had most everything on the menu, but over the past year, I've really started liking their baha tacos ($8.89). I usually get the combo - one fish and one shrimp. It comes with a side of slaw and some CJS to put on your tacos. I also like the taco salad ($8.59) (I know kinda boring, but I like it) it's fresher than most mexican taco salads. The Chicka Chicka Boom Boom ($9.99) is pretty tasty (if you're hungry) and comes with the rice and beans as sides. I also LOVE the veggie in the blue corn tortillas. If you want a taste of everything and aren't terribly hungry - split an appetizer plate with your dinner mate. It's got a little of it all. ATMOSPHERE: I usually sit in the bar area, so I cannot comment on the tables. I do know there's always a wait for the tables - at a normal eating hour, there are people stacked up all around the front door. It's a lively place - loud music, happy people, kids. But just go with it. SERVICE: The guys in the bar know what we like and since we go rather often, they are quick to make sure that we have everything we need. I can't comment on the wait staff in the dining area because I've never eaten in there, but my bar guys & gals - TOP NOTCH PRICING: I'm adding this because I DO think that Chuy's is a little pricey of you just want to pop out for some Mexican. Go for the experience ... eat the good food ... call it a date night. NOT TO MISS: Their T-SHIRTS. The t-shirts are what roped me in a LONG time ago. I once bought 12 CHUY'S t-shirts for a man whom I was (obviously) courting :) Things turned out OK though ... he still wears some of those t-shirts. Ya gotta get a t-shirt.
