Waited an hour to get in on a Friday night. This was not a surprise although once at a table it didn't seem all that busy. Food was terrible, right near the top of the worst ever. Chuy's is a popular restaurant at The Summit. I'm either not a fan of Tex-Mex or not a fan of Chuy's. Hear me out, it's not bad, it's just not great. I will say that if you are looking for more of a relaxed vibe to meet a friend, this would be a great location. There's a great patio that overlooks 280. Drinks are alway decent. If I'm ever here, it's because I was invited and did not choose to come. So, overall, great ambiance and food is a little bland. Give it a try if it's more your style! read more

Chuy's is a Tex Mex spot in Birmingham... and you pretty much know what you're getting into before you even sit down. Did the food have enough calories to keep me alive? Yes. Did it make me sick or kill me? No. Was it a flavor explosion that made my taste buds do a happy dance and declare tacos as their new lord and savior? Sadly... also no. It's fine. Perfectly acceptable. Nothing you're writing home about. That said, the ambiance is fun and festive, and the service was fantastic. We rolled in with a group of about 15 people and our waiter absolutely crushed it. Drinks kept flowing, no one's order got lost in the chaos, and the margaritas never stopped showing up. The chips were endless... like a CVS receipt or the Fast & Furious franchise. Would I go out of my way to come back? Probably not. But I'm also not mad I went. Came here for a friend/doggy date since they're pet friendly. Sat outside on the covered patio which was nice! Service was nice but VERYYY slow. Food came out quickly but our server was seemingly the only server and disappeared for the longest times. My drink (Coconut Mojito) came out so long after I ordered it and got my food that I forgot I ordered it but it was the best part of my meal. My first order, the King's combo, was disgusting. It tasted like it had just been sitting there for hours. I thankfully got to switch it out and ordered their version of a chimichanga which was different than the usual but ok! Rice is disgusting. She even recommended the custom enchilada dish I had and it was ABSOLUTELY delicious!!. I loved the spicy green boom boom sauce. I could have cleared my plate but I purposely saved some for dinner. We returned to Chuy's last night and had another great experience. Our server, Chris was excellent, attentive, and followed up to check on us at the appropriate pace. We enjoyed the chips, smoky chipotle salsa, and queso. The queso is really delicious. Margaritas are consistently well balanced and firmly frozen. I had the chili relleno with ranchero sauce. Chili was a hatch chili, which I really liked, even more than a poblano. In my combo was a green chili chicken enchilada which was delicious too. My husband had the chimichanga with steak and queso on top. Rice and beans are flavorful and authentic Tex-mex. The view makes this a wonderful location for a relaxing dinner. We passed through Birmingham last week and ate at Chuy's. That night would have been rated a 4 star, but mostly because we didn't enjoy what we ordered as much as last night. Went to Chuys on a Thursday about 6:30. Service was great. Our drinks were kept full. They were crowded to it took some time before food had arrived. My fajitas were not hot. The steak was....chuy? I have not had steak fajitas in a while and the expense was a splurge. Not my favorite. I was disappointed. Food may have been sitting in a window and had time to overcook. We ate there last evening around 600pm. The restaurant was not crowded, plenty of empty tables, we were told a 15 min wait. We agreed to sit outside in the covered patio. It smelled of garbage and was not cleaned. Dirty tables and chairs. The food was not impressive, nothing special. The bathrooms were filthy. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. And there were no paper towels to dry your hands. However the guy who waited on us was very good. PSA: Chuy's patio is dog-friendly, which is great for pet owners; however, I was surprised to see that dogs are allowed to eat from the same plates used by human customers. I was told by the manager that this is acceptable because the dishes are sanitized in the dishwasher. While that may meet sanitation standards, it wasn't something I was comfortable with. I also asked about food safety practices and was told that servers can have long nails as long as their nail polish isn't chipped. Again, this may be the restaurant's policy, but it didn't inspire much confidence in sanitation practices. Additionally, the server put her hands in front of the chip scooper to keep the chips from falling. But once you touch the chips, let them fall where they may. The other issue came during happy hour. A partially premium drink I ordered wasn't actually included in the happy hour pricing. The explanation I received was that the change was made about a year ago, and newer servers wouldn't necessarily know, since they weren't around before the policy changed. I suggested that management make sure servers clearly communicate which drinks are and aren't included in happy hour so customers aren't surprised. Especially those who come regularly and are just hearing about this change. Unfortunately, the manager didn't respond to that suggestion. In the midst of it all, now we're dealing with parasites, poor practices and literal pup cups (plates). The chuychanga was yummy, beans were mid but the rice, total trash! Not flavorful at all. The salsa and jalapeño ranch are some of the best I've had. The salsa is usually top tier, although inconsistently made at times. Today, a little too spicy. read more

Hostess can't manage the wait list. Quoted an hour to an hour and half, 2 hours later they cant say when our table will be ready. They have no ability to plan seating correctly to be able to pull tables together. I understand having several parties on one night but you need to be able to give more realistic timeframes. If they had said 2-3 hours we could have gone to another place or gone down the road to get something for the 1 kid in our party to eat so that he isn't neat tears waiting on food. We also got 2 guava to fill up on before the main attraction. 3 of us had Fajita Beef Panchos. Generous portions-more than we could eat. They used to be 11 bucks but now they're 14. Still well worth it. My sister had chicken tacos. No leftovers for her. Danny provided impeccable service- no empty water glasses here. This was my first time visiting with my boyfriend. It was a Saturday. We got outdoor seating and our server greeted us in good timing. The chips and pico were spicy but I liked the different kick it gave. I got a frozen margarita and Baja shrimp tacos. The frozen margarita was delicious but my Baja shrimp were okay. We eat at Chuy's pretty frequently. We have seven kiddos and Mexican restaurants in general just tend to work well for us. Today, I only had two out of the seven with me, so I thought it would be a somewhat relaxing lunch. I even told the hostess that we should be a fairly easy table today. Bahahahahaha. Oh why do I insist on tempting fate? To make the rest of the story easier to understand, I will refer to my four-year-old as child 1 and my two-year-old as child 2. Whereas child two could pretty much eat straight jalapeños, child one has a zero-spicy-food policy, so after they bring our salsa and jalapeño dip, I get a little bowl of ranchero sauce for her. Everything is going pretty well, child one is actually sitting in a booster seat for once, and everyone is coloring. All of a sudden, the waiter walking by gets a funny look on his face and I noticed that child one also has a funny look on her face. She has somehow knocked the ranchero bowl off the table, down the side of her shirt, down her pants, and all over her shoes. Also all over the floor. It was like the never-ending bowl ranchero sauce. The door to ranchero Narnia, if you will. I jump up, run around the table, and start cleaning up the floor because I don't realize the extent of ranchero clothing dye that we are currently working with. The manager walks over and tells me not to worry about it, but I am mortified because it has literally splashed under the floor from one end of the table to the other. He asks me what size shirt child one wears and that's when I realize the extent of the ranchero shower she has just taken. As all this is happening, child two, who is in a booster seat, leans over to see the carnage, loses his balance and takes a nosedive right into the floor. Immediately another server and a hostess come over and try to help. As child two is a "big boy" and never wants any assistance , he attempts to get back in his seat, flipping the booster seat off the other side, all while letting everyone in the restaurant know, "I DO IT MYSELF!". I'm not even looking around the room at this point because I'm very aware that most other conversation has stopped and the other patrons are either annoyed or just enjoying this circus. As child two is almost back in his chair/booster seat, he kicks his water cup off the table which pops open on the floor and basically creates a water/ice/ranchero sauce extravaganza under the table. To her credit, child one has not moved during all of this. I don't know if she was just shocked at everything that was happening or if it was just the Ranchero sauce soaking into her socks, but she was actually being fairly still. That pretty much is where the theatrics ended... I got everything 75% of the way cleaned up, sat back down, and tried to finish the meal while not looking completely incompetent. The manager showed back up with two shirts so that child one could take her pick. Our regular server brought her another bowl of rancheros sauce. One of the servers high-fived child one and told her that at least she got a free shirt out of it. So there you go. Food was great, service was great, your whole table could basically implode and they wouldn't even bat an eye. I will definitely be back and if you have kids, I suggest you take them there as well. read more

Honestly Chuy's is not my favorite place, but every now and then I get a craving for the chicken flautas. The flautas themselves are really good and I got the red chile sauce on the side and that was great. I do not like Chuy's rice and beans, it honestly just tastes like it's been sitting out awhile. On the plus side, I love the jalapeño ranch and I could put that on everything. Also, we sat in the bar area and the service was kind of off to me. We visited on a Sunday, a little after 12. We joined the waitlist 30 minutes before and so grateful that we did. We checked in and the hostess told us 5-10 min. 1 min later we had just sat to wait and my phone buzzed, our table was ready! We we greeted right away by our server, Lexi. She was fantastic! She kept our drinks and chips refilled.
