We've been to a few Chuy's locations many times over the years. They have your standard variety of tex-mex foods, which are all reasonably good. Prices are about average. The wait is well above average. Both to be seated and to get your food. In particular if you have more than 2-4 people in your party. The place is sectioned off to help keep the noise down, but it's still a little above average for noise. Partially due to the fact that once again, they seem to remain crowded during any of the normal eating times. That's normally a good thing for restaurants, as it means people like it. Which we do. So the question is, is it really worth the wait? If you have some extra time to kill, sure, go for it. Otherwise, there are plenty of other places that get you in and out much quicker. Not to mention comparable or better tasting food. I mean, it's Texas. It's not hard to find good Mexican food. Just look around. Overall, the experience is just, "OK." read more

I will only return to Chuy's when I can successfully eat it without getting food poisoning. Myself, and many people I know, have gotten incredibly sick eating here. Anytime I hear about someone eating here, my first question is, "did you get sick?". Am I the only the one who has experienced this? Recently, the chimney cleaner (some dude I don't even know) was telling me that he got incredibly sick. I was joking when I replied, "Did you eat at Chuy's?" and he said, "In fact, yes I did." The food is meh, but not worth the vomit and horrific pain I was in the next day. Maybe this has gotten better, I don't know, but honestly, I'm too scared to try it again. read more

I want to preface this review with the fact that I'm from SD where it's mexican food is famous in its own right. I was visiting my uncle who insisted that I try some tex-mex. When we sat down, we were served free chips and salsa. The menu seemed to highlight several different kinds of enchiladas served with a variety of sauces that depended on what you ordered. The green chile sauce was smoky and spicy. The tomatillo sauce was mild but still good. Some of the dishes came with blue corn tortillas which I thought were good and unique. There were also tacos and burritos but those didn't look remarkably special from anything I could get in SD. Almost every dish was served with a side of rice and beans. As an option, you can get green chile rice (not spicy) which was a nice variation on the typical mexican rice. Overall, the enchiladas were better than what I have had in SD, but they are different styles of mexican food. For comparison, mexican food in SD focuses more on seafood and Tijuana Style Street tacos. One more thing, the portion sizes here are good and can be had for a reasonable price. read more

I love Mexican food so much that I'm extremist picky about it. Even more so, I am quite particular with the quality and strength of my drinks. I have tried many places in Austin for Mexican food: tex-mex to full on authentic, and I choose Chuy's every time. My bartenders are always amazing, and today Byron, who is highly charismatic and funny, served me for the second time. I had the best drinks (highly recommend the Grandma's 'Rita) and the best food! Thank you so much for another terrific experience. I'll definitely be back!!! read more

Pro: Very good food here, I get the Chuychanga (chicken, cheese etc in a fried flour tortilla) Con: Parking lot is small. Long wait time during lunch. read more

I love the food and the wait staff, but after 100 or so visits its clear that management doesnt care to coach the hosts. They are efficient, but utterly unable to smile. Id come more often if it werent for the initial interaction being a bit snotty. Can the host/hostess' wake up a bit? If you don't like your job, stay home! It's not like there aren't other minimum wage jobs you can get that don't demand you at least try and smile at the public! read more

Dear God, where do I start? Every time I come to this Chuy's it's a huge disappointment, and it's really hard to disappoint me when it comes to food. I ask for very little. When I come to this location, I have always been greeted by friendly hosts, after they get done with their conversation of course. I am then lead to a section surrounded by screaming children. I'm not exaggerating either, one time they sat me and a friend in the middle of three families with children waling at the top of their lungs. The waiters are always smug, and when I go to pay they always say something along the lines of "You don't want change back, right?" before trying to run off without giving me change. Sorry, the food-runner put in more face time than you did, you're not getting a $10 tip -.- If you ignore all of that, the food is really good. read more

So I've waited since that last encounter to hit up a Chuy's again. This time we went to the Chuy's in Houston and were pleasantly surprised at the service and food. Much, much more in line with the feedback I'd previously received. I don't know if the previous experience in Austin was a fluke but I'm willing to give it another shot. read more

40-45 mins long when all we ordered were some damned salads is unacceptable. I could've grown the vegetables by now. #unhappyhour

Being new to town, I was super excited to give this place a try but what a fail. The experience was memorable only in the abysmal service....our server clearly had zero interest in our table. She took so long to take our order I was starting to wonder if she had finished her shift and left, messed up our food, and was MIA for the meal except to drop off the check at the end. read more

I've been eating at Chuy's for years. Great, consistent food. They had some new items on the Green Chili Menu this year including pork tostadas which were fabulous. Lately, the service has been inconsistent. Sometimes it's really good and sometimes it's really lacking especially in the bar area (but not AT the bar). There is usually at wait at night, but it's not too long and worth it. Also, I really appreciate Chuy's involvement in giving back to the Austin community. They sponsor a parade every year that collects toys for needy children at Christmas and hold a popular 5k running race in the spring that also benefits charity. For this, I can forgive a few waiters for being off their game from time to time. I know I am :) read more

If you're going to Chuy's for an average Mexican dinner and some sugary frozen cocktails, this is your spot. Jalapeño ranch dip is pretty darn good. Giving 2 stars for watching a cockroach scale the entire perimeter of the room on the ceiling. read more

TAKE YOUR HAND SANITIZER & USE THE RESTROOM AT HOME! I frequently dine at Chuy's because it close by, it's filling, and my young daughter loves the vibrant atmosphere. However, the last three times we've gone the restrooms have been DISGUSTING! With long wait times for tables and food, along with extra-large sodas and margaritas, it is almost a give in you will have to use the restroom. Every time I had gone into the women's restroom previously, I had always noticed the smell of sitting water, or maybe even sewage. This is not a new building, so I just dismissed it and got out as quickly as possible. This past week when I came to Chuy's at 1:00pm on a Sunday, the restroom was filthy and had NO HAND SOAP!! I can't believe that after less than 2 hours of business the restroom had already become that dirty and they had already gone through two entire dispensers of soap. I'm guessing no one cleaned the bathrooms the night before. I alerted the hostess that there was no soap and she offered me some hand sanitizer. Regardless, it was not something I wanted to witness or experience before having lunch. Food is good, but it really makes you loose you appetite when the Management of Chuy's can't keep up with something as important as clean restrooms that have soap! read more

Been in Austin for about 8 months...from small town Illinois. My wife and I were not impressed. Food- The food was bland, boring, like we were eating Carlos o'kellys. She had chicken flautas and they tasted like microwave taquitos. I had the chika chika boom boom enchiladas...good but not enough to bring me back. Drinks- Two house margaritas on the rocks. Good, but not awesome. Service- Our server was super nice and very helpful. Not one complaint on service or atmosphere. All in all, we caught the hype bug of chuys and decided to check it out, in pursuit of a really good tex mex we could frequent...what we got was a neat environment super service, but bland and tasteless food read more

Three stars because our waitress Karissa was great! Long story short, we had an extra long wait (1.5 hours) due to the hostess giving our spot away to other guests. We sat, the hostess apologizes and due to the wait our waitress even offered to pay for our meal. During our meal we had a guest which just happened to be a huge cockroach. My greatest disappointment was the fact that the manager never even stopped by to apologize for any of the inconvenience or the bugs in the facility. read more

I love the tortilla soup, deluxe enchiladas and creamy I have to get extra for my family too. Good comfort food.

Our recipe for fine dining at Chuy's is as follows: - Order one (1) mango margarita that is the most delicious in the land (for me). - Order one (1) iced tea and add sugar (for him). - Eat chips with a variety of salsas: the table version, that creamy heads-for-your-thighs one, and that one with cilantro. All FREE (here's looking at you, Trudy's). - Accept that we're both squeamish meat eaters. - Order one (1) plate of veggie enchiladas - Get flour tortillas on the side (for FREE). - Accept that we're both pathetic eaters-in-one-sitting and are already pretty full. - Do whatever sad damage we can on that one entree. - Take the majority of it home and eat it in 2 hours when we're hungry again. Some might think there's a tapeworm involved. Others might read into the deceptively simple planning. It's up to you. read more

Chuy's North is a place I frequent weekly. Okay, sometimes twice a week. Once it was three times. I have no shame. What keeps me going back is the jalapeo ranch dip that I eagerly over consume on every visit. As a result of the chips, the dip, the salsa, the Texas martinis, and their fajitas, I'm slowly working my way to 400lbs. But I don't seem to care, and neither do the masses that frequent this location just off HWY 183 (Take the Duval Rd. exit). There is always a wait, but it goes quickly. The staff is always frantic, but they're cheerful. They have no problem adding or subtracting this and that to your order. And, most importantly, the food is always good. Sure, they've branched out, but this comes with success. Their prices are more than fair. Here's a hint. Split the fajitas for one with a friend...plenty of food for $10. Here's another hint. Bring a sweater...no matter the season, they've got the A/C on full blast. This is a must on that list you've prepped for a friend's or family member's visit. Chuy's is good Tex-Mex...it may not be the best, most authentic grub you can get in Austin, but it certainly tastes good going down. read more

No IDEA why Chuy's has such low reviews. I hope its just parking and wait time...because this place is ALWAYS full!!! I love chuy's. I love deluxe tomatillo sauce - I love the jalapeno ranch, I love it! This place is delicious, reasonably priced, and Texas-portioned (not like, Dallasy portioned, but Austiny portioned. Does that make sense?) When you go here, you feel relaxed, comforted, and you generally leave VERY satisfied. HOWEVER, Chuy's - you lose one star because of your fajitas. EVERYTHING under the sun here is good - but after well over 4/5's of my life going here, that is the one thing that disappointed me. It was just a little bland, and I found myself missing Taco Cabana. Also, Taco C has better tortillas. But other than that - mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! read more

This location is down the street and we've become regulars. I used to be a Chuy's hater... I never really got what the big deal was. I went during the Hatch Chili Festival and I became hooked... Now I'm a Chuy's lover... especially now that I know you can get the Hatch Chili Sauce on anything you want! And they're queso? Amazing. read more

Chuy's is Austin. Problem is, it's become so chain-oriented, it feels more corporate than Austin-friendly. I always enjoy their food and the service is good, but I think it's more about the scene than the food. You rarely see long-time locals eating at Chuy's. It's usually groups of people from "the office," or others celebrating events like birthdays, etc. Their fajitas used to be the best anywhere, but now I think they're just a little bit above average. Salsa it just average too. They should always serve the creamy jalapeno ranch with their salsa, but you have to ask for it. Why? I'm never with anyone who doesn't ask for it, so just bring it already! read more

I've never been big on Chuy's. I grew up in America, and so waiting for food when I'm hungry isn't my favorite pastime (that's baseball). Every time I've come here I've had to wait for a table, wait to get served, etc. The food has never measured up to the time spent waiting for it. With tons of Tex-Mex options in town that offer faster service and better food, Chuy's strikes me as more of a tourist attraction than a great place to eat. read more

I stayed in Austin for work and the front desk agent working at our hotel suggested Chuy's as "authentic Tex-Mex." The phrase alone made me giggle, but we agreed that we would eat here. The Mexican Martinis made my night more than perfect. I also had chicken flautas and loved them, too. One of my co-workers had the boom-boom chicken, or whatever it is called and said it was great. Now -- having read all these reviews, I wish I'd known about the jalepeno ranch! Staff was great and because we took a cab, we didn't have to endure the small parking lot. We went on a Monday and it was PACKED. read more

I really don't want to write a big long review for Chuy's. It's good. Good enough for you to crave it, specifically, every once in a while. Smother anything in Boom Boom and it'll be fantastic. Macho Burrito is one of the best things they have and it's not on the menu. I'm never going to get over paying 6-7 dollars for queso. Tacos are meh. Steak anything is good. That is all. read more

I feel that I should mention how badly I crave the chicken flautas. Yummmmy. And that drink that isn't on the menu anymore that I can still order..margarita with a Corona and a shot of Cointreau? Great atmosphere, GREAT service and delicious food. A trifecta for a nive evening out. The new Watermelon Margarita is AMAZING. Quite possible the very best freaking margarita you will EVER had. I'm not even exaggerating. The food is really good too and at a pretty decent prize for the size of the meals. The salsa is pretty good and they keep bringing you free chips to eat with while you wait for your food, so you're never ravenous. It's a good environment, pretty chill and has cool decor. Definitely recommend it. Try the Hatch Chicken Enchilada, although I gotta warn you, if you can't handle the heat, then try a different sauce because it is SPICY (and this is coming from a real Mexican). They also have the Elvis, a country-fried steak that's breaded with Lay's potato chips! crazy! (but delicious...) Overall, definitely worth a visit. And I'm not kidding about those Watermelon margaritas. DO IT. *if you're over 21 of course ;) read more

The Tex-Mex food here is decent. I really only like the burrito or chimichanga. I really don't care for their enchiladas. To be fair I don't really like the enchiladas anywhere in Austin with the exception of one restaurant. The staff is friendly and the food is hot. Filling. What more do you really need? read more

OK, let there be no doubt - Chuy's is Americanized Tex-Mex to its core. You're not getting some fancy-schmancy "interior Mexican" dish and paying twenty bucks for the privilege. You're not at some awesome East Austin hole-in-the-wall where even the owner of the restaurant doesn't speak English. It's Chuy's. Pronounced "Chewy's". GET IT? That having been said, the food is always good, and even if it isn't, it's an Austin tradition, so you have to go anyway. I don't go to Chuy's every day, but if there's visitors or if I'm just feeling in the mood for something quintessentially Austin, that's the way to go. Come on, now - if it's good enough for Jenna Bush to get arrested at, isn't it good enough for YOU? read more

Let me start by saying this was my first experience with a cuisine called "Tex Mex." If one looks through my reviews, this is not usually a place I would probably come to. With that said I had to try it on my first trip to Texas. I was told one needs to try the margaritas and tex mex in Texas. So I was brought here. All I'm going to say is that the North needs a place like this. I'm not going to waste you're time with trying to be verbosely eloquent in reviewing this establishment. I had the hatch enchiladas, the others had the chimchangas (I'm not sure of the spelling so don't quote me on that one) and an order of chalupas. Just as this review is devoid of any Pulitzer prize winning attributes with it's simplicity, this restaurant is devoid of any pretension of being a high end eatery with crazy prices. With that said they know what they do and what they do well. The ambiance is rustic with old hubcaps hanging from the dilapidated ceiling and families being loud, sipping their margaritas, and having a plain old Texas good time. This is a great sign because it is so loud and crowded. As I once said, "never eat at an empty restaurant." If you're like me and haven't had experience with Tex Mex, this is a good start. If you're in Austin give this place a shot. read more

No gluten free options. Even the Girl Scouts selling cookies out front had GF options. Service was good, the waitress tried to be helpful and asked one of the managers to come by at least 2 times. He wussed out and never made it over-typical restaurant manager. So have a couple of drinks and then move on to restaurants that are aware of and will willingly accommodate their GF patrons. Chuy's you have failed. read more

My sister in law came to town recently and I just knew she needed to try some true Tex Mex. Chuy's had been recommended to us by friends and the restaurant had great reviews, so we went! Quick summary: great food, great atmosphere, wonderful service! There were so many things on the menu that sounded delicious it was hard to decide. I ultimately went with a big-as-your-face burrito and was not disappointed. The frozen margarita I ordered was great, it just melted a little too quickly for my liking. One thing that's unique: you get salsa, chips and a white dip for free when you sit down. I thought the white dip was queso but it was actually this amazing blend of ranch and peppers. Very different but very delicious! read more
