I order the GREEN CHILI STEW, ELVIS PLATTER, and beef tacos and I would give Chuy's 4 stars except they lack consistently great food. I have dined here at this location for over 10 years. In the last 5 years there is a notable change in the Chuy's experience. I noticed high waitstaff turnover, and how my go-to menu items are hit-or-miss. From burned potatoes in the Green Chili Stew to stuck together oily chips to overly-greasy beef in the tacos. I guess the one thing I can always count on is their salsa cruda, you can't go wrong with that. Update from 5/15/16: I ordered takeout and they not only got the order wrong but omitted food I had paid for. The take out also has a mandatory added on "bagging up fee". The pros: portions are filling and relatively cheap, there's not really much of a wait during lunch, and you'll leave satisfied enough if you don't set your expectations too high. Chuy's is your average Tex Mex fair. I had mixed enchiladas (one chicken, one beef) covered in green and red sauces, respectively. Their spicy red sauce was missing the spicy factor, and the green sauce was just lacking flavor in general. Both the meats were OK, but I had a slight preference for the beef. While it was filling it wasn't exactly very memorable. If you're looking for high-quality ingredients and the best Tex Mex, skip this one and look elsewhere! read more

I was told I had to visit this place to understand Austin, so I dropped in last night. It's very unique, and has a huge outdoor patio. We had the super queso with guacamole and beef, and the staff was always just around the corner to refill our chips. The margaritas are the size of a baby's head, as are the burritos. I ordered the chile rellenos, and they were okay... not great. I also had dead flying ants fall on my plate while I'm out there, but my friends told me to get used to it -- it's just a Texas thing! Obviously Chuy's is an institution, and gives a great, fun, family experience to a dinner or lunch out in Austin. It's great for kids and groups, and the service was outstanding. I'm hoping this is the correct Chuy's. I went to the one closest to Zilker park and it was fantastic. I got the Elvis combo and holy cow was it a lot of food. I couldn't finish all of it, but that's probably because I got an appetizer. I went with family and someone in my party ordered something that wasn't on the menu. Yes, apparently there is a secret menu. We got an appetizer that resembled the Kirby Queso, BUT it had a lot more stuff in it. In addition to guac floating around in queso, there was also beef, sour cream, and pico. It was amazing and a huge huge portion. If it could satisfy my family of 5, then it can satisfy yours as well. Unless if you're all competitive eaters or something. The one star missing was because someone in my party got an incorrect order. But they managed to fix it quickly with no attitude. The steak fajitas are my go-to and always come out sizzling and delicious, with all the fixings you could want. The carne guisada enchiladas are really tasty as well. It's unfortunate I have to write this review because Chuy's is actually pretty good Tex Mex. my qualm is with the consistency. I'm new to the area and have eaten at Chuys 3 times. Two of those three times they messed up my order. So if you're okay with spending your hard earned money with understanding that you have a 66% percent chance of them messing up the order, then be my guest. The most recent screw up was today. I have an avocado allergy, they left it on top with the cheese lettuce for my fajitas, sucked but no big deal, I could just scrape it off. The tortilla soup however had huge avocado chunks all in it. That was unsalvageable. They need to train their staff to pay more attention to people's orders as far as allergies go, someone could get really sick. Sadly I can't actually leave a review on the food because our experience getting a table was a disaster. We visited the Northwest Austin location on 183 & Duval on 5/21. We knew with it being a Saturday night that it would be busy. We checked in online and it said 25 minute wait. We showed up at the restaurant at about 20 minutes after we checked in. It was really busy so I was surprised that the online check in process said 25 minutes but there was only 2 (and a child) of us so we figured it must be big parties waiting. Anyway, I wait in line and I walk up to the host stand only to be greeted by what had to be the most rude young man I have ever encountered in hospitality. He essentially called me a liar because He insisted our name wasn't on the list. I showed him like text message confirmation and he rudely said "I don't know what to tell you, you're not on the list. I can put you on but it's going to be a very long wait" at that point we just left. The funny part is, we went to a different restaurant and about 10 minutes into us sitting down at our table we got a text from Chuy's reminding us to check in because our table was ready. Yes. We come into Chuys 2-3 tImes per month. When they first opened, our order was right about 50% of the time, but we loved it because we got extra food. Now they get right 9 out 10 times. The food is great, portions are awesome, price is outstanding. I can make 2 meals out of the Comida Deluxe, yum. The service is fast, friendly, and outstanding. Just when I thought I had already been to the best Tex Mex (previous review of mine) I was wrong! Chuy's was amazing! Our waitress Anne was great. She kept our drinks full and made sure there was nothing else we needed. The atmosphere made it really fun also! All of the lamps, tables, booths, etc. had different designs and made you feel like you were in Mexico. The food was amazing! I am usually able to tell how good the food is going to be once I taste the salsa they bring out with chips. The salsa was amazing and their queso is amazing as well. I knew that the food was going to be great once I had the salsa and queso and sure enough, I was not wrong. The fajita chicken quesadilla o had was awesome! Well, this location of Chuy's has 600 reviews already, so I'll add to it and make it 601. I haven't yet perused the other 600, so if I repeat others' comments, sorry, not sorry. I met another attorney here on Thursday night after she and I ended up discussing Hatch green chiles. Seeing as Chuy's has a special Hatch Green Chile menu, we met here at 6:30 -- along with most of the rest of northwest Austin who apparently had the same idea. We were directed to the bar for our 15 minute wait. VERY impressed with the hostess and bar staff. We got our drinks and the bar tab in exactly enough time to be seated -- right on the hostess' estimate of 15 minutes. Once we made it to our table, the excellent service continued. Our server made sure to ask what we'd ordered from the bar for our drinks so she'd know what to bring for refills. When I mentioned that I didn't want beans in my burrito, she also mentioned that the entree came with beans and asked if I wanted to substitute instead. My burrito was excellent and made exactly as I requested. My dining companion and co-counsel for the evening raved about her Elvis fried chicken and green chile sauce. Another point in Chuy's favor is that unlike a lot of chain restaurants, they don't water down the taste. Even for a large national chain (granted, it did start here in Austin), they keep the spice level up. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by the "burn" from the Tex-Mex chili gravy on my burrito. Only one thing held them back from perfection -- and it's a borderline cardinal sin of Tex-Mex. I can't stand their regular salsa. It's a chunky, somewhat vinegary mess that's not quite salsa and not quite pico de gallo. Looking on the upside, though, it did keep me from gorging myself as usual on chips and salsa. read more

We have only been here since Sunday and eaten here twice. Moving from San Diego I knew the Mexican food would be different, but it was a very welcome different eating here. The sauces are great, the tortillas are thick and fresh, and the beans! I don't know what is in them but oh man...definitely try the beans! I like to visit places when they are their busiest to judge the service, and we were quickly seated and well tended to during happy hour. I had a large strawberry lime margarita, it was just enough and a better deal than getting two small ones (a fantastic recommendation by our waiter Steve D) We sat in the cocktail area and they served appetizers and a la carte menu items there. In my opinion, nothing defines the Tex-Mex cuisine more than Chuy's. Being a part of a large family in Texas has always had its troubles of seating and table room--not in the case with Chuy's. We had the choice of inside or outside seating in which we chose outside since the weather was rather nice for an evening in Austin, Texas. Now with many brothers in my family, you could only imagine how much food would soon be on our tables. In every single case Chuy's goes out with a smash on the quality:quantity:price ratio. For me personally, I go switch between the steak fajita chimichanga or the steak fajita for one. Although the salsa is flavorful, it is a little bit different in consistency and texture compared to a traditional salsa. What they are insanely known for is their creamy jalapeño ranch sauce that's literally so addicting you'll need three or four servings of the sauce before you get to your main entree. To any newcomer in Austin I always recommend Chuy's as a staple of this great city. Love it! On a side note for drinks: I highly recommend the Berry Mojito if you're in the mood for a light and refreshing beverage with hints of fresh mint. read more

I need to branch out on the drinks because every time I go I just get the Mexican Martini because it is so damn good. Perfect amount of heat and sweet. The Food. If it was AYCE I would never leave. I would explode from pure gluttony. The chalupas: beyond crunchy and chewy and delicious. Tacos, enchiladas , nachos, quesadillas, ..each one could not possibly be better. I still need to try a burrito and the fajitas, and I'm daydreaming right now thinking about it. Every waiter, waitress and bartender we met was so friendly. I could seriously come here for their Creamy Jalapeño salsa alone. It's the best chips & dip I've ever had, very addicting. I got the Rio Grande Enchiladas which have carne guisada with the deluxe tomatillo sauce and it was good, nothing special. Consistency​ - a word most restaurants​ with one location or many, have a hard time committing​ too. I like certain dishes on this menu, the Oven Roasted Chicken Burrito with queso being my favorite. And omg, their creamy jalapeno is amazing! Have been a loyal customer of Chuy's since I moved to the Austin area in 1994, in fact, I'm at any one​ of their locations often, twice weekly. Their food is always great, with only two times in my 24-year​ patronage​ of this place have I ever had an issue. Both times, the issue was fixed and I went home happy and full. I'm happy to see Chuy's is expanding past Austin, it's nice to spread the happiness that they bring and the great Tex-Mex too!
