Kimchi-brined fried catfish, remoulade, capers, lettuce, tomato and red onion on a sub roll -- it immediately reminded me of Mandina's on Canal Street in NOLA. That's about as high a compliment as I can give a po'boy outside of Louisiana. My partner had the Heirloom BLT and loved every bite. Fresh heirloom tomatoes, arugula, sprouts, herbed avocado mayo on wheat -- simple and done right. Chuck's has that perfect Hampden energy: unpretentious, a little quirky, genuinely good food. Great!! We wanted a nice little brunch before doing some walking around in the neighborhood and stopped into Chuck's as we had heard great things. I can confidently say that everyone that recommended this place was right. I had the Seoul skillet with pork belly, kimchi and mushrooms and wow, was it good! The flavors melted perfectly and it was the epitome of a well balanced breakfast. Service was fine - a bit slow, but they were incredibly busy, so I don't fault them at all for that. One thing I do hate is having to continuously ask for my water to be refilled, and I was left with an empty glass quite often but again, they were swamped so I do understand. Ambience is very interesting here, I don't know that I have ever been to a more eclectic restaurant. The decor is all over the place but it really does fit the vibe so I say this with zero negativity. It's quite tight in the space but that's totally fine. Yum! We came here for a quick bite after house hunting in the area and I was starved! The food came out quickly and was delicious, I order the pimlico skillet and really loved the flavors of the pickled onions with the pork shoulder- I finished the whole thing! Service was quick and very friendly. The place itself is pretty cool- they have oils and produce and beer and wine for sale as well as having a kitchen and bar. At one point, I was pretty smitten with Chuck's but now, I'm not so sure. The last few experiences here have been lackluster. Mainly, inconsistencies in food quality and really, really slow service. I usually order the skillet and a side of grits but each time, I've noticed varying portion sizes in both. They always seem to serve the grits in a different sized bowl every time and even skimp on the skillets, too. On a recent visit, we waited almost 35 minutes for our food. This is surprising since the skillets are essentially three ingredients, maybe four or five at most, and most of those ingredients are eggs, hash browns, and maybe some meat or cheese. Our sides also came out first which we thought was strange. With a breakfast spot, especially with a diner feel, I do kind of want to get in and out quickly but that never seems to be the case at Chuck's. I'd rather go to other diners in the area who are quicker and cheaper. read more

I haven't been to Chuck's trading post since pre-Covid and I've only been for brunch. This is a Hampden staple, and even the Hampden and neighbors forget that it exists. I recently heard about their burger special which is $15 for a drink can be an alcoholic drink (like a crush), and fries and a burger. For how shortstaffed they are, the staff is phenomenal provide excellent service and I was shocked to see how many people were getting to go orders for their burgers. You can get a choice of draft beers and they also have a cooler because they are a little bit like a grocery store so you can pick whatever beer you want out of a six pack. I am off on drinking so I decided to get a Coke product and my friend asked for a crush which he made and didn't charge for an additional fee. We decided to sit outside and someone was smoking so I'm not sure if they allow smoking on the patio but I didn't want to say anything since he seemed like he might work there? I also got three mosquito bites because it is damp and kind of musty in that outdoor patio area. Inside I didn't want to sit because it was too smoky so it's a little given intake because it is a tiny little space. It's really a 3.5 because the burger was lackluster. Next time, I have to try the Smashburger and also you can ask for all of the burgers with the smash patty so that's what I recommend you do because I've only heard good things about the Smashburger. Go for brunch and go on a Wednesday for the burger deal because in this economy you really can't beat $15. read more

Service is super friendly and attentive Loved that. Food took a minute but they appear to stay busy so completely understandable. Food was pretty good. I wouldn't drive out of my way for it, but if you're in the area, it's worth checking out. Drink was well made although a little warm. Doesn't look like the juices are on ice. The ambiance is very much giving diner. The tables are far enough apart and the music is the perfect volume - you can actually have a conversation. This appears to also be a grocery where you can buy beer and wine, so that's a plus! Be prepared to walk a little. I've visited this spot twice and enjoyed both experiences. I stayed in an Airbnb in Baltimore and found Chuck's right across the street from me. I enjoyed 2 breakfast meals during my stay. Both times I chose from their specials menu. The Filipino breakfast with rice, longaniza & egg accompanied by a mango slaw. My only complaint is the rice needed way more garlic. Everything else was on point. The second meal was Shakshouka and it was delicious. I'd change nothing. It's an open kitchen with the seating of a somewhat rustic atmosphere. The staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. A favorite coffee shop was closed on Tuesdays so we decided to keep walking on 36th to Chuck's. As others have written, this spot is off the beaten path. Arrived close to closing time so we ordered to-go. Rustic interior with mixed/outdoor seating and a home turned into a restaurant. A small refrigerated grocery section offering produce, milk, soft drinks and Beer. We ordered the Pimlico skillet-Confit mushrooms played nicely with the eggs and spinach, The Reuben-any time I see "house....." it's a good sign. House braised corned beef made for a tasty sandwich. The pancakes oh the pancakes-don't know and don't need to know what they put in the batter but these cakes stole the show. Homemade berry compote took it over the top but these cakes were fine alone- no syrup necessary-delicious. Service was friendly and engaged. They have weekly specials posted on their website. For my food, I'll start off with saying the sandwich had an amazing flavor --- until I noticed little micro fibers of some sort on my sandwich bread. I have been noticing restaurants are using a utensil or cloth of some sort on their grill that leaves a residue behind on food. There are little strings if you look closely at your bread. If it's on the bread, then it's probably on everything else that gets cooked on the grill and we just can't see it This cannot be safe or healthy. Chucks trading post just kept popping up on my yelp. Photos of beautiful burgers kept calling my name. I finally answered the call as I am currently on a quest to find the best burger in Baltimore City. I will say the website says burger night is on Wednesday between 3-7. However, it's actually from 5-8 when the restaurant reopens at 5. I didn't arrive until about 4:40 and it was a nice day so no problems with the wait. The staff was outside and were really nice about letting people know the restaurant didn't open until 5. It was not super crowded when we got there but the traffic picked up quickly. I ordered the smash burger which came with an order of fries and a beer. It was 15 bucks. You cannot beat that with an ugly stick. The burger did not disappoint. I would gladly go back and try another burger. The spot was chill and very low key. My kind of vibe. The service was great, the price was great, and the burger was great. What's not to love? Solid brunch place! They have great options from skillets, pancakes, sandwiches, and other egg options! I got a pimlico skillet with goat cheese and then tried the sandwich my friend got! The sandwich was the beet/goat cheese one! These were both SO good! We got a side of pancake which was INCREDIBLE! The berry compote on top really made it. Easy to find parking around the area on the street, they have a small outdoor patio and indoor seating, not a ton, but all the tables were full on a Saturday morning with no one waiting. One thing is, we told them a couple times we were both vegetarian and somehow bacon ended up in the potatoes. It was frustrating, as we had made it clear to our server (who was also vegetarian). She completely understood tho and had some food remade and covered the potatoes that had the bacon, which we appreciated. We just moved to the neighborhood, and we checked out Chuck's Trading Post for breakfast our first week. The restaurant is a little divey and a little smoky and definitely understated cool. And the food was simple but really good! The breakfast menu has breakfast sandwiches, hash skillets, pancakes, steak and eggs, a classic breakfast, and French toast. I had the Better with Cheddar (sourdough, cheddar, bacon, and a fried egg), and my husband had the Marco Pollo skillet (adobo chicken, jalapenos, corn, Pepperjack cheese, and potato hash). Both were good. We had their drip coffee, which was good as well. Their lunch and dinner menu has sandwiches, salads, and burgers. They also have a full bar and offer happy hour from 1-3pm Tuesday through Saturday. The restaurant is small, but they have some seating outside, a few tables inside, and a bar (we ate at the bar). While all the servers we spoke to were really nice, the service was a bit scattered (I think they were training new staff). We definitely had to ask to order and kind of wave to get more coffee. OK so who knew where this place was? It is the definition of a hidden gem. And I do mean hidden because I passed it twice (thanks for the help google maps) Anyhoo when I got there the I appreciated all the precautions. I ordered from a window, dirty and clean pen options, they had hand sanitizer at the front door and not a lot of people milling about so already im good. I got the angus burger and a side of potatoes. The potatoes were crispy and flavorful the burger was cooker perfectly and everything worked. Worked so well that I went back the next day and ordered the same thing again. I think the test of any restaurant is how well you can cook something simple and a burger is simple but so easy to mess up. Chucks Trading post knocked it out the park with this burger and I have no doubt that the rest of the food will be the same I cannot wait to go back and try more of what they have to offer. read more

First time here . Heard about this place via tick toc so I had to come try their smash burger . The place its self was cute ..definitely gives off a cozy diner vibe. The place was clean and not crowded at all . I was a little disappointed (but also impressed ) that they only served local brands of alcohol. When tryna come up with a substitute for not having grey goose, crown royal or henessey... our server went asked for help and another server was able to give the best recommendations doff the top of her head without thinking twice. I loved that . Our server raved about how the smash burger was and he was right . The burger was made fresh and was absolutely delicious especially once bacon was added. I was sad the burger didn't come with fries but the chips still got the job done . I wish the menu offered more but for the price I paid I can't complain. To be honest, my first experience at Chuck's wasn't the best but they certainly made up for it! I had called in an order of the Smashburger with a sunny side up egg for a friend and an angus burger for myself. My meal came with a side of chips and my friend had a side of hash. Food came out hot and the sizes of our burgers were ginormous--a lot larger than I anticipated. The location is truly unique as it's literally located right in the middle of a neighborhood.
