During my trip to Mobile, Chucks Fish was my favorite foodie adventure! I loved the midtown location, in direct proximity of all of the bars, perfect for having an after-dinner drink. One taste was not enough! I need to go back! My brief encounter with Chuck's was during a recent appetizer crawl I was on. I tried the spring rolls and the gumbo. Both were amazingly well seasoned and stood on their own. The gumbo was absolutely delicious but the consistency was creamier than most gumbos in the South so I want to go back and try it again. The decor is excellent and the room makes it easy to have private conversation or chat with a group. I will be back when I have more time to try a full meal! read more

I've visited Chucks in Tuscaloosa, and was very happy with the ambiance, service, and food. This was a bit of a difference. Unfortunately the ambiance and service was subpar, although the hostess and manager were very kind, the overall experience was very lacking in comparison to my previous experience. I'm a little conflicted here. Not a fan of docking a restaurant for slow service especially if the food is outstanding. But then there's a limit....right? Getting straight to the point, I arrived just after 6 pm and ordered fried oysters and two rolls....one after the other. The oysters arrived quickly and were delicious. I really enjoyed the spicy sauce. Then roll #1 took 30 minutes. Ok, I'm dining alone, sitting at the bar and it's busy. Still a little hungry after the first roll, so I order another. It's now 43 minutes later and it still hasn't arrived. Hmmmm. As I write this I'm considering removing a star and taking it to three. The bar crowd has turned twice and here I still sit. Had dinner here the other night before a Mardi Gras Ball, small group of 6. Even though the downtown area was jammed with revelers, parking was a snap! They have a private lot and , lemme tell ya, during MG, that's niiiice!!! We walked in, with a reservation, and were immediately seated in their upstairs dining room. We all ordered drinks and a few appetizers. I had the signature Old Fashioned and my better half had a a vodka cranberry. Both were really good. We ordered the salmon avocado roll to start, the red snapper and risotto and I had a....wait for it....burger. I can't help it! It's what I like! It was awesome btw. My wife really enjoyed her dinner as well, offering me a bite then trying to stab with my hand with her fork because I took "too big of a bite!" The best that Mobile has to offer! I had a seasonal local fish special that was cooked perfectly. My husband ordered a really great fillet. The sides are what really impressed me - the mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts were the best part! We were there for a business dinner so we had a private room upstairs, but it was otherwise a pretty crowded and loud spot. Great for an excellent meal but not the best spot for an intimate date or a group to have a pleasant conversation. Try the sushi! The best in town! read more

What a delight! I do believe this is my new favorite sushi place. The Miso Soup and the Amazon Roll did not disappoint. The atmosphere is incredible, I love the chandeliers & exposed brick. Even more so, I love who the restaurant is named after (photo below). It's always wonderful when a business pays respect to someone so honorable. The staff was nice, a bit on the slower side but I believe that is in part because the bar is downstairs and we were seated upstairs. Service was horrible at this restaurant. We were a fairly nice size party of 11. We had reservations and were seated promptly but it all went down hill from there. Our waiter had a very short tempered attitude and was not pleasant whatsoever. In general it is given that it will take longer for food to be prepared and everyone served in the party. However, when ordering the waiter was over it all and would cut you off. Five of us ordered sushi and then a main entree. Sushi came out after the main course was served. I did not receive anything and everyone else at the table was served. The waiter realized this after a few minutes and stated, "your meal will be out shortly." Everyone in our party was done eating and I still had not received my food. My steak finally was served and it was a poor excuse in preparation, quality, and presentation. My plate looked nothing like the three plates around me that had the same meal. Ordered my filet medium well and it came out rare and extremely bloody. The filet itself was halved to decrease the cooking time to try and cover their oversight. Blood was all over my bland mashed potatoes and I didn't even attempt to eat the broccoli as it looked greasy. I received my sushi thankfully and is was eatable but wasn't anything to brag about... It was at least eatable. Another person at the table ordered a cucumber salad and never received it. This was my first experience at Chuck 's Fish House and it will definitely be my last. read more

Cane here with my husband. Love this restaurant, even though it is small, it is intimate and dark. Tealights on the table and the chandeliers make it romantic. I had the seafood linguini, which I highly recommend. My husband had the stuffed shrimp, which I tried and enjoyed. He also had the tuna roll as an appetizer. Tried this place a good while ago but never reviewed it. We ordered from both the sushi and kitchen menu. All the food we ordered was equally delicious. I love that the rolls have a good fish to rice ratio. Prices are a bit higher, but worth it to me. I was disappointed that there was no sashimi as we were informed that they only do sashimi when the owner is there, which is odd. You would think a sushi/seafood place would have another person trained to do this when the owner isn't there, which I assume is often as they have many other restaurants to deal with. One noteworthy item was the dessert. That particular day was a warm butterscotch blondie ala mode. It was to die for. I deducted a star due to the no sashimi without owner rule and because the establishment is rather dark and loud like a bar/lounge and not so much an intimate dining experience. There was a party seated all the way across the restaurant from us, but they were so loud and obnoxious that our own party couldn't hear each other because we would literally have to yell across the table for us to even make out what the other was saying. I'm hoping that was an isolated experience due to that one party, but disruptive nonetheless to the ambience of what the restaurant should have been like. What an amazing dinner date! We made reservations ahead to ensure a table and went specifically to try their sushi. Starting off with a great service from everybody (hostess, waitress, waiter), we felt very welcomed. We tried 4 rolls: Hey Baby, Rock n Roll, Yokozuna and Surf and Turf. I have to say it was difficult to decide because several descriptions caught our eyes from the menu. Every bite filled our mouth with spectacular flavors. All the ingredients, specially the meats, felt very fresh. There was no sauce overload which allows you really to taste the roll components. We accompanied our sushi with cocktails: Strawberry Smash, which was delicious and balanced, and the Watermelon Mojito, which was refreshing. We are definitely looking forward to come back and try the other Sushi rolls and other plates. We stopped here during a hurricane evacuation and I was shocked we had randomly found such a gem! The place was packed but the owner tried his absolute best to find us a table. The atmosphere was nice, perfect for a date night. The food was absolutely delicious! I had a the TNT roll which is a little on the pricey side for sushi and I don't regret a dime. The sushi was simple but that's what made it so good. The flavors were made to complement each other and you could taste the freshness of the fish. Had a 7:15 reservation for my spouse's birthday, actually arrived early and was seated. This was my second visit with first visit being "ok", nothing spectacular. Restaurant was relatively busy. First of all, this place is in an old building with brick walls, concrete floor and a high hard ceiling. When even half full, the acoustics are horrible and it gets very loud. Menu is good, but prices are moderately high-but I don't so much mind that if experience and meal is top notch. We ordered and our food arrived at 8:50. One item ordered was "Uptown Shrimp", described as Panko fried with Asian slaw and some type of drizzle. Shrimp were small-probably frozen and imported-not the kind of shrimp you expect from the Gulf in this seafood producing city-appearing batter fried and smothered in a sweet Asian sauce. The "slaw" was shredded cabbage only, no seasoning or dressing. Rather than being crispy and light coating, it was thick and soggy. Reminded me of a $6.95 dish from a Chinese take out, but this was $18. The fresh fish was tasty, but portion hardly worth the $40 price. As far as ambiance, we had to basically yell at each other to talk. Waitress was very friendly, not sure if the 1.5 hour wait on food was her or the kitchen. For what we paid, we were both underwhelmed and will probably not return. Very overrated in my opinion based on 2 visits. read more
