How this place doesn't have more/better reviews is beyond me. We started with some appetizers of the uptown shrimp and some edamame. The uptown shrimp was excellent!! Tasty sauce. And edamame is edamame. Good and healthy. I got the seafood platter, which let me try a little bit of everything. Crab cake, shrimp, and amberjack. Also, I got a couple pieces of eel nigiri. Very good. Friend got the TNT roll and the other got the paneed chicken. It was all worth it because of the bottle of wine we got! La Crema Chardonnay. Awesome wine! Good fried shrimp. Well fried and fresh. Perhaps a bit expensive for fried shrimp but excellent service in a pleasant environment. On of party had the 8 oz. filet done perfectly to medium. Very tasty and presented with garlic mashed potatoes and roasted cauliflower. read more

Although this is a 'fine dining' restaurant, I came here for the sushi. Why? Because when I looked at the menu online, I saw A LOT of different rolls to choose from, and there was a disclaimer that the rolls came from Yoshie Eddings, and the sushi chefs were trained by her as well... she's pretty much our regional celebrity chef. And I figured if her family owns sushi restaurants in Japan, then this was something worth trying. I had the Dharma Roll (conch, shrimp, crab stick, smelt roe and cucumber with spicy sauce) and the KAOS roll (Tuna, avocado and green onions, spicy sauce, crab salad and chili sauce). While both the rolls tasted okay, I was left feeling like I had been cheated. I wanted something more. Unfortunately not only was the presentation quite plain and uninspiring, my mouth was pretty much underwhelmed. With the ingredients both rolls had, they really could have turned them into something beautiful, but instead they were just simply rolled up together and cut. I was looking forward to the conch, but couldn't even tell the difference between the conch, shrimp or crab. It all looked the same. It all tasted the same. I also had a ginger salad, which was very pretty and tasted good, so no complaints there. And the bread that was brought to the table was quite good. My friend Peter L ordered rolls and sashimi... I won't comment on his food, he will write his own review. The decor was nice and the service was friendly and attentive. The sushi menu itself was quite affordable. I'd go back and try something else if they were opened for lunch, because the dinner crowd was loud and the restaurant was dark and it is just a little too fancy for my tastes... but if someone wants to go here I won't say no. In fact I would probably try something off the dinner menu, I did see smoked tuna dip that I wouldn't mind trying. Hmm. Who knows. read more

Chuck's has some of the best sushi in town. My favorite rolls are the Amazon, Roll Tide, and Rainbow. The service on the other hand leaves something to be desired. During my most recent visit I sat at the bar and was "attended" to by the bartender, Brittany. My girlfriend and I seemed to be more of an annoyance than welcomed guests. I asked for miso soup (which is complimentary at the sushi bar) and Brittany stated that there would be a charge. When I asked if I could walk over to the sushi bar to get a complimentary bowl for myself she stated that "it's not very expensive". I love the food at Chuck's but I advise getting a table or sitting at the sushi bar. I've encountered Brittany and her lack of enthusiasm on more than one occasion but I won't make the mistake of sitting at her bar again. read more

Ate here again...this is my second time, hubby's third. It was packed! By the middle of the meal, there was a wait for a table on a Thursday at 6pm...that must tell you something. I wanted to try a regular appetizer since Josh was gonna order all sushi for his meal. We chose the Spring Rolls- yummy. Too bad there were only two. But they were stuffed full, not the half ass stuffed that you get at some places. Oh and the bread is delish. Not sure what type it is but perfectly soft and doughy inside with a crunchy outer layer. Since I remember enjoying the crab cake on the seafood platter last time I decided to order the full entree of crab cakes. I am happy with that decision. It was served with mashed potatoes and asparagus but I opted to just get double veggie. The plate had two gigantic crab cakes filled with lots of large, fresh chunks of crab on top of just enough creamy, spicy sauce. I cleaned my plate and was stuffed. Hubby order three sushi rolls. Two were eel and then the rainbow roll. He liked it but said it was as good as the last two times he had their sushi. I love eel so I had to get a sample. THis is why I deducted the star...there was a crunchy shell in one of the eel rolls...the chef must have not gotten the crab shell completely off before adding it to the roll. So it sucks having to pull shell out of your mouth after biting into a lovely roll that you want to be so good. Tastes and freshness still there but not awesomeness sushi like before. Overall. We are fans of this place. We call it the Ocean of Shelby County. I still say OCean is my all time favorite seafood spt but if I don't feel like making reservations and driving all the way downtown and valet parking then it is off to Chuck's. read more

Ate shrimp and grits at Chuck's Fish on May 9th. Very disappointing ! They were too salty, but worse, they tasted like they had been sprayed with chlorox, which I've heard is a way of trying to make shrimp look fresher than they actually are. I'll never order shrimp there again unless I taste one first. $23 is too much for bad shrimp. I should have complained, but kept my mouth shut.you can bet they will hear about it next time. Guess you have to be a regular to get good service. My hint should have been when the hostess handed me a menu and told me to seat myself. Had to ask every single time I needed something, which became exhausting for a dinner I was trying to relax and enjoy. Couple next to me got great service and never saw an empty drink, chatted with the chef the whole time about whom I guess were common high school friends. Whatever. I've loved Chucks fish for many years but when I went there for my birthday dinner, I was completely ignored and never sat. I arrived at 9:08pm(they close at 10pm) Many people looked over at us standing at the host stand, but no one ever came to sit us. After about 15 minutes, we left. Excellent food and all local from the gulf . I read the history of the owner and all fish is hook / line caught from the gulf fresh . This is a rare treat in Birmingham and it shows in the quality. The dishes seemed well thought out with out too much extra as to overload the plate. I had the shrimp and grits which was excellent and I would recommend this to anyone. My wife had the crab cakes which were filled.with chucks of crab but the filling was a but too mushy and cakey. The waiter was very nice and attentive. Good atmosphere except I read another yelp review before we went which was a complaint about how rude the host was at the door. Upon first arriving we did not have reservations (and did not need them) but were greater with a stern "do you have reservations " from a gentleman next to the hosted who clearley was already in the process of seating us. Dined here tonight for the first time and it was delicious! Had Sarah as our server and she recommended the seafood platter, my husband ordered it and he said it is the best he has ever had! The food and drinks were amazing. We ordered the tuna dip for an appetizer and the sauteed grouper and parmesan grouper for entrees. We intended on ordering more drinks and dessert, but did not due to very slow service. We were there for an hour and a half and only saw our waiter three times, none of which were after being served our meal. Service was good! The menu is limited which I knew in advance. Had the uptown shrimp and fried green tomatoes for apps. Uptown shrimp had great flavor with the sauce but all in all, they were small shrimp fried pretty crispy with some flavorful glaze. Fried green tomatoes themselves were good; the breading stayed on and not corn meal-y like many. I was excited they were served with goat cheese and jam but both were almost flavorless to me. Seafood platter was the entree. The crab cake was very good and lots of crab versus the bread like texture too many have. Seemed authentic. The shrimp en brochette also good, lots of crab stuffing and not full of fillers like other places. Came with blackened amberjack which was good but salty.
