Chicken was crispy and great flavor. Broth could have used a touch more seasoning. Food didn't come out together. I LOVE Umami bhm so I was thrilled to see them expand to Trusville, but the experience was truly a let down. I was shocked the disparity in food quality. The pinche pasta was half a bowl full, little pork, and WAY too salty. I couldn't even eat two bites before I had to send it back. It was inedible. I was there today for lunch and ordered my usual 10 hour pork belly with kimchi, this is my favorite ever since they opened their doors. Kimchi taste good, you know when it's authentic! The best part is they're served on a real plate yay! Ambiance is good, server is nice and friendly. read more

We have been here several times for either the happy hour specials or for a date night nearby. While normally we get the sushi, we do occasionally get some of the other items on the menu. They are located right across from Ferus on the other side of the stage. You can sit inside or outside, and the outside is great when its a cooler day, especially if you're wanting to watch a show or a game on the screen. On our recent trip, we got a buffalo roll - spicy tuna, avocado, bacon, and a few other things - which was really good. We also got the ceviche, a favorite of ours, which was a pleasant surprise. My wife got the beef bulgogi and I got the sweet and spicy pork belly. The bulgogi was good, but the pork belly was delicious - great taste and simply melted in our mouths. I was craving sushi so I decided to come on over to Umami Trussville. The service has been consistently good the two times I've come here. I asked the bartender for sushi recommendations. I took her advice and got the Long Island roll. It is futomaki style, so the toppings are in the inside vs on top of the roll. I didn't love the roll but I ate most of it. There was an odd sauce that almost, ALMOST tastes sour. I don't know ..... She also recommended the coconut soup since my allergies were acting badly! I wasn't surprised to learn that this is a sister restaurant to Nori. The rolls are similar but bursting with flavor. The rolls are colorful, delicious, and fresh. If you aren't someone who typically opts for raw rolls, you don't want to skip it here. There's no fishy taste or texture. Everything was crafted with perfection. We were really looking forward to lunch at Umami, and at first, it delivered. The Takoyaki was a standout--perfectly cooked with tender octopus inside and a crispy shell. The Jalapeño Crispy Calamari had a solid flavor, though some pieces were stuck together. The Umami Crispy Rice brought nice texture and balanced flavor, nothing mind-blowing but enjoyable. When it came to the rolls, the Cash Me Out Roll was a curveball--not spicy, but hot in temperature. Definitely a unique experience. You have to be in the mood for warm sushi, but it worked. The Roll Tide Roll was my favorite--fresh tuna, a little crunch from the tempura, and just a clean, crisp bite. Then came the Sugar Daddy Roll, and that's where everything fell apart. It was made incorrectly--with cream cheese, which we definitely didn't ask for. My wife and I each took one bite and immediately knew something was off. By the time we were able to flag down our server, we were already halfway through our other rolls. I told her we didn't want it remade--we were nearly done eating and didn't want to wait--just to please take it off the bill. What followed was one of the worst customer service experiences I've had in a restaurant. We were told we'd still have to pay 50% for a roll we didn't eat. Then the manager came out--not to apologize, but to argue. He was blunt and borderline confrontational, insisting that if we didn't want the discount, the only other option was to remake the roll and pay full price. No apology. No accountability. Just attitude. At that point, I gave up and told them to go ahead and remake it--I'd rather pay full price for the correct item than be charged for something we couldn't eat. Eventually, our server--who, again, was doing her best--came back and let us know they'd decided to comp it. But by then, the mood had already shifted. The energy was gone. My wife was upset, and the whole experience had taken the wind out of what was supposed to be a relaxing lunch date. Bottom line: the food is decent, but the way they handled the mistake was unacceptable. We won't be back. read more

Wow! We visited the week of their soft open and we were thoroughly impressed! They didn't have alcohol yet, but said it would be appropriately 2 weeks. (It didn't matter to us because we were just getting lunch.) We arrived a few minutes after open on a Friday and we were greeted immediately and asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. We chose inside as it was a bit windy outside. Several groups came not long after we did, I think everyone was excited to try the new place! I treated myself to lunch today. I have been here many times before. I enjoy going here but today I was disappointed. I was looking forward to having sushi. The sushi fell apart. I have never had sushi that messy before. I was trying to explain this to the waiter and the host. It was a mild, but delicious Panang and the Gyoza were firm and not soggy. We ordered a Tempura roll and the shrimp was fresh tasting and crunchy. My wife ordered 3 tacos: Bulgogi, cruchy fish and shrimp. They were tiny so I didn't try but she said they were delicious. I haven't had Indonesian in Birmingham, so I had to order Mei Goreng. Enjoyed the food, my waitresses was really nice and the place looked amazing as well as the outside seemed like it would be great for family when it's not raining. The sushi here is a little more expensive than some other places. My only complaint is a personal one and has nothing to do with the actual restaurant, and that is that the menu is different from the downtown location. There are some real gems on the menu missing and I was excited thinking they would be a closer copy of the same menu, but things like the chicken tacos or even a salmon roll are no where to be seen.
