Really like this place. The decorations are are unique and fun. Pretty dark inside. I have never eaten in the outdoor area but it looks super comfy and fun. The bathrooms are clean and work. Be careful in the men's bathroom as the water coming out of the tap in the sink has super high pressure. It can and will splash on you. The food is amazing. So fresh and cooked correctly every time. My wife has been more then me but between the two of us we have loved everything we have ordered. Good wine selection and tasty sweet tea. read more

Another great dinner at Chuck's this evening. We go with another couple every few months. This meal was no different than the others. The crab cakes were great. The fresh fish of the day was very well prepared (Mahi). The sushi was like always - expertly done. All we can say is thank you... I was very disappointed. We had a girls night here and it was a complete letdown. The waiter was moving fast but to no avail, we were constantly out of drinks etc. The app came out in record time but there was at least 40 mins before the entrees came out. And in the meantime we kept running out of beverages. Then 2 of the girls ordered wine at the same time and when they put them down on the table one was about a third less than the other. for the money we spent, it should have been a better experience. read more

We intended on ordering more drinks and dessert, but did not due to very slow service. We were there for an hour and a half and only saw our waiter three times, none of which were after being served our meal. Service was good! The menu is limited which I knew in advance. Had the uptown shrimp and fried green tomatoes for apps. Uptown shrimp had great flavor with the sauce but all in all, they were small shrimp fried pretty crispy with some flavorful glaze. Fried green tomatoes themselves were good; the breading stayed on and not corn meal-y like many. I was excited they were served with goat cheese and jam but both were almost flavorless to me. Seafood platter was the entree. The crab cake was very good and lots of crab versus the bread like texture too many have. Seemed authentic. The shrimp en brochette also good, lots of crab stuffing and not full of fillers like other places. Came with blackened amberjack which was good but salty. Not sure I'd do it again due to the limited menu but was a good experience. read more

Stopped in without a reservation at 8pm, the place was crowded but we got immediate seating at the bar. The bartenders were knowledgeable and very helpful. All the rolls we ordered were delicious. Had a 7:30 reservation at Chucks tonite (Friday 3/22/2019). Finally seated around 8:15. Not what we expected based on so many positive past experiences. Funny thing- I rec'd a text at 7 that said "you are expected at Chucks in 30 minutes". When finally seated, I ordered Grouper piccata. Server brought me a great piece of grouper covered in mushrooms. Probly a pound of mushrooms. No capers, just a heaping pile of mushrooms. Seemed more like a bad Marsala sauce. Strange and disappointing night st Chucks. read more

The Key Lime pie was the best thing our group of 4 had last night. We walked in around 6:30-6:45 and were asked by the hostess if we had a reservation. We said "no" and she said it would be about a 20 minute wait. My husband and I walked up to the bar and before we could even place a drink order, we had a table. The service was awful and our server seemed quite "green." He rang in the wrong order for one at our table and then proceeded to charge us more for that item; probably because even after the second time, he never seemed to understand what we were ordering, which was an item on the menu. I ordered sushi and found it ok at best. The blackened snapper was quite good but the hit of the evening was the key lime pie. We were in the restaurant two and a half hours for four entrees and two desserts. I may try to give it a chance again one day but was severely disappointed. read more

We made a reservation for 7 at 7:30 and waited over 20 minutes to sit down. I was quite perturbed. Chuck's isn't a place that was on a recommendation list but we decided to give it a try. I ordered one of the specials for the night-- panko crusted Red Snapper with a bacon & crabmeat butter sauce. That dish was probably the best thing that I have ever eaten. Chuck's Fish is an excellent seafood restaurant in Birmingham. The decor is lovely and inviting and the food is outstanding. All 3 members of my party raved about their specific entrees, though we did not try any of the appetizers, deserts, or sushi. The dishes are put together very well and while the portions are not what I would call large, they were a little bigger than what I find at most fine dining establishments. That being said, I'd still grab an appetizer if you walk in hungry. One thing I should note that is if you visit while it is crowded, the restaurant can be very noisy. If you are looking for a quiet, intimate dinner for two, you will want to pick a late hour. The restaurant was about half full when we arrived a few minutes after 8 on a Tuesday. The food and service were very good to excellent and the prices were fair. I would definitely recommend and visit again. read more

Ok I have heard many friends rave about this place so I met a friend for dinner and was very excited. The appetizer was very good (tuna) but my entree was very salty, overcooked, bacon wrapped shrimp and the sauce over it was not tasty at all. The grits were great. My husband and I visited this restaurant earlier tonight after hearing that it was a pretty great spot. Unfortunately, that was NOT our experience. The ONLY enjoyable part of our meal was our appetizer of fried green tomatoes. We also order the chef's choice sashimi platter....COMPLETELY underwhelming, was room temperature and was NOT worth the $32 spent on it. We waited more than 30 minutes for our cocktails which were awful! They were both so strong and tart that we couldn't drink them. We were not offered replacements when we said as much to our waiter. I had the seafood rigatoni for my main dish and it was extremely bland...I couldn't finish it and the waitress boxed it up (which I'll probably be serving to my dogs). My husband had the seafood diablo (pretty sure that was the name) and it was basically scallops in warmed up Prego sauce with some pasta. To top it all off, a couple hours we got home my husband vomited up his entire meal and it still dry heaving over the toilet. We are NEVER ones to leave bad reviews, but after spending $200 for this meal I certainly expected a much more pleasant experience. 10/10 would NOT recommend again! read more

This was our first visit, mainly because, even though we've heard the food is very good, the deterrent was that the noise level is a problem. That sure is true. But if that doesn't bother you, then this is a wonderful restaurant to go to. We arrived just about 6pm, desperate to get out of another Hwy 280 traffic standstill, and since it was a last minute decision, we didn't have a reservation. They didn't have a table for 2 for immediate seating. Our options were to eat at the Bar, the Sushi area or an area overlooking the kitchen - that might have been a good choice but when we saw an empty table set for about 20 guests right behind where we would have been seated, we decided to have dinner at the Bar and enjoy drinks and dinner with the bartenders. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but when the guests started arriving for the table for 20, they all congregated at the Bar for drinks, so we felt cramped and the noise was terrible. Unfortunately, that overshadowed what could have been a perfect last minute dinner choice as our meals were wonderful and beautifully presented. I would have taken pictures of our dishes, but I didn't want to annoy other diners with the camera flash, since we were in such close quarters at the bar. We will probably return to Chuck's as there were other dishes on their menu that sounded delicious, but only with making a reservation, hopefully for a table in a quiet corner....is there a quiet corner at Chuck's??? read more

I want to like Chuck's. Really, I do. We live near the restaurant and I like the idea of having a local-ish restaurant to go to for dinner and drinks. My review starts with a visit to Chuck's my husband and I made a few months ago for dinner. The restaurant was not busy. I can't remember if it was a weeknight or weekend, but I think it was a weeknight. We were immediately seated at a table inside, right smack in the middle of the restaurant. We sat at that table for ten minutes without being acknowledged. I understand a restaurant is a complex system of moving parts and there are other factors to consider than just a full dining room when it comes to timing. However, a "Hello! I'll be right with you!" adds no additional burden. I like to think I'm a low-maintenance diner but I was pretty peeved that we sat there unacknowledged for ten minutes. Needless to say, we ended up walking out. Last night, I grudgingly gave Chuck's another chance. It was a beautiful night and my husband and I were looking forward to sitting outside and enjoying a few cocktails after long weeks at work. Once again, we were seated right away. And once again, it was NINE minutes (I know exactly how long we waited because I said I was walking out at ten minutes) before being greeted and served water by the hostess. It was another four minutes (again, I was counting) before our server came by to say hello and to take our drink order. My cocktail was delivered by another server, and nearly ten minutes later my husband's Coke arrived, also delivered by another employee. Luckily, we ordered an appetizer with our drinks, as the fact that our server was going to be elusive became apparent pretty quickly. She eventually made her way back (not with our appetizer... also delivered by another employee) to take our entree orders and said she would deliver bread. The bread never came. Our entrees were delivered (by guess who...) quickly after we finished our appetizer and the food was a smidgen above lukewarm. I shouted another drink order to our server as she quickly scurried past our table after caring for other guests. My husband asked for a box when our server brought the check over and she said she'd box it. Fifteen more minutes pass before she returned. She apologized for the wait and said she actually threw my husband's food out and had the kitchen make up a replacement. When we looked at what was packaged, it was nearly a perfect half of an entree. Really, we could have done without the leftovers. I laughed when I saw it was half of an entree order. We ordered two alcoholic drinks, a soda, one appetizer, and two entrees. Our bill was $96. I'm genuine when I write this - I'm not complaining about the price of the bill. We knew what we were going to spend on a dinner at Chuck's. But the experience was just awful and it was painful to pay that amount for neglectful service and mediocre food. I proclaimed last night that I'm officially finished with Chuck's, and no matter how conveniently located it is, I just can't bring myself to go back. Meh. Not worth the money. $36 for grouper, skinny asparagus, and risotto. Grouper was Ok, asparagus was not, and the risotto was not prepared correctly. The bread pudding is no where near Bellini's and the chocolate creme brûlée tasted like grocery store pudding. The coffee had a weird garlic after taste. Go downtown for dinner. read more

I've been to Chuck's since it opened. As of the past year and a half I've visited quite frequently and with no disappointment. Never, have I had an issue with any item I've ever ordered. Sometimes we'll eat just sushi or get sushi as an appetizer and order entrees, just depends. They have several great craft cocktails as well. Chris and Terry do an outstanding job of cranking out sushi for the entire restaurant, while juggling interaction with their clientele at the sushi bar. The entire staff is very attentive from managers to servers. I personally love the ambiance chuck's sets with low lighting, candle lit tables, and the lack of an abundance of fluorescent lighting. The food is top notch, from the ribeye to the stuffed shrimp, you can't go wrong. To finish off your meal, the deserts are all great (I suggest the white chocolate bread pudding, trust me, and they usually have a home made cheesecake of some sort). I'd give Chuck's 8 stars if I could. read more

Terrible dining experience from beginning to end. The only bright spot was the waitress who tried valiantly to redeem this food. Pork empanadas on special for the evening. They were tragic. Pork tasted like it was reheated after several days of leftovers. The mango chili sauce was good there just wasn't any of it. The waitress tried again for us with the uptown shrimp--their most popular app. So over cooked the shrimp were hard. The stuffed shrimp entree was over cooked as well and sides were forgettable. Waited one and a half hours to get our food from the time we sat down even with reservations. The food was subpar and very expensive! The waiter gave us no bread even though other tables had bread and he knew that the wait would be long and we had hungry kids. We had to ask for bread. They ran out of vegetables but didn't bother to tell me, they just didn't bring the vegetables. They eventually found some vegetables to give me and did. They made my son's sushi spicy when we specifically said no spice. We will not be going back! read more
