Seafood & sushi & prime rib? Ok! This place was located right next to the hotel we were staying in, so hard to pass up! We read over the reviews and just had to check it out! We thought it was gonna be a bust since when we walked in there was one waitress and she was steady answering, not one, but two ringing phones simultaneously. As soon as someone noticed, they had someone come from the kitchen to seat us and from then on, smooth sailing. The better half ordered the Chicken Caesar ($12) and I ordered the Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer ($17) and a Dynamite roll ($13). The tuna appetizer looked and tasted a little different than what I'm used to but it was very good, wasn't the sharp teriyaki/soy flavor I was looking for but more of a basic tuna & sesame flavor (you can order it with sesame seeds or blackened like a Cajun flavor, I opted for the sesame). I don't think I would order it again as there just wasn't $17 worth of oomph there. The Dynamite roll was 8 pieces of deliciousness! I would definitely order that again!! Excellent service and food! We had a party of 6 and our server stayed attentive the entire time, even after her other tables were filled. I ordered the Osso Buco... sooooo stinking good! Full or flavor and fell off the bone, just as the menu said. I didn't get pictures of the other foods, but the kids loved the Fish Tacos and my friends loved the prime rib, sandwiches and beers on tap. Was traveling for business, and had the great luck of having this place right in my parking lot. They had a good variety of beers on tap....from pilsner to a couple of local IPAs. Overall great vibe, great for a family or dining solo. I had no idea what the menu would be and I was surprised at the options. Something for everyone but not an overwhelming menu. Food quality is incredible. The sushi rice flavor wasn't my favorite but definitely good, just more of a personal preference. Fish quality and flavor was wonderful. Stopped by the Chubby Trout at the recommendation of a business partner. Place was packed, the staff were all masked and keeping the tables clean. Took about 30 minutes to get a table, as they don't take reservations unless you have a party of 6 or more. Lots of choices on the menu - I had the Mahi dish with asparagus and hollandaise sauce. Portion was nice - good value for the money. My coworker had the Blue Gill, said it tasted great. I sampled the craft beer - very nice pilsner. Service was a little slow, but considering the crowd I really can't complain. I'll come back on the next trip to Elkhart. read more

I had the Crab Pepper Soup - best I've ever had and I've eaten all over the US... although it could've been hotter, since the wonderful lump of crab floating in the middle (beautiful presentation) was chilled. Anybody who complains about a few crunchy shell pieces is a whiner! You should expect that with fresh crab. Very well priced too ($9). I also tried the Sashami appetizer ($4) and it was also well-presented, tasty and with crispy cuke slices, delicious. For my main, I had the Crunchy Group Sandwich ($16) and man oh man! WHAT A MEAL- enormous! Twice the size of the bun. Melted cheese (yumm) just the right amount of slaw (home made and tangy)... bun had no pizzazz though and too sweet - recommend salt kaiser bun. Staying at a hotel nearby? (we were at the Hilton) mention it & get a discount! Yay!! The food and service is really good, drinks are reasonably priced. I would HIGHLY recommend trying the Fall Sangria! It's so delish!! Ingredients include Bourbon and Pinot Grigio with honey, pumpkin spice, apples, pears and oranges! This screams fall vibes! My sushi was good but not great, the rice was a little mushy. I ordered the spicy salmon roll which comes with three spicy sauces, and two pieces of nigiri. I'll be honest, I was very skeptical when looking at the menu because they have a little bit of everything. A few people from the area recommended I give it a shot so I walked over from my hotel next door. To start, the place was absolutely packed at 5pm on a Monday which I'm assuming was because of the half off sushi deal. I squeezed in at the bar, ordered a drink, edamame, and 2 sushi rolls (the max for half off). The edamame was interesting and it took for a few bites to decide if I liked it but then I ate the entire bowl. It's pretty heavy on the lemon flavor and the large pieces of salt are what you'd find on a soft pretzel. My sushi rolls were the Crabby Shrimp and Red Dragon. The Red Dragon was my favorite of the two but they were both tasty. The Crabby Shrimp was a little chewy for my taste but neither roll lacked flavor. The Red Dragon had a little kick to it which paired well with the soy sauce. Overall, friendly staff and an interesting menu that was surprisingly done well! read more

Started with calamari full order. Absolutely fantastic. Nice battered square 4" lengths not rings. Pepe Crab bisque definitely a winner. I had almond crusted Walleye with baked potato and sauteed veggies. Loved every bite. Wife had 2 rolls, chef Gil roll and kamakazi roll. 2 salmon nigiri. Our Winnebago camping group stayed in Elkhart for the weekend, and we needed a place for a group dinner on Saturday evening. A few weeks in advance, I selected Chubby Trout based on the reviews and the fact that they were listed as good for groups. My reservation request for 14 was replied to almost immediately which was really reassuring. Upon our arrival in Elkhart, three of us stopped in for lunch to scope it out and confirm our reservation. We had a wonderful sushi lunch, completely against my usual principles of avoiding it in the midwest. Well prepared and very fresh. We enjoyed the Oktoberfest beer greatly, but it was tapped out on Saturday. The hostess showed us where we would be seated on Saturday. Our group of 14 descended on the place on Saturday evening, and we were greeted by our server Mabel. She did a very professional job and made no mistakes with our large group. While there, I showed her a photo of our Basset Hound Mabel. Mabel the server is a lovely young woman and we wish her the best. Meanwhile our group ordered the full range of menu options, except for sushi which was quoted as a 45 minute wait. All food was prepared beautifully and tasted great. We only missed the Oktoberfest beer. A couple of days after our visit, Mr. Phil Snyder called to thank me for bringing our group to Chubby Trout. Now when has that ever happened before? The Chubby Trout came highly recommended to us from a couple locals. Although when I was ordering I thought the food was a touch on the expensive side, everything my group ordered was so good that we had no problem with the prices. The Caesar salad with homemade croutons was a table favorite. The brisket was amazingly tender and delicious as well. It's ok, the food is decent but the two times we have went they seem very understaffed and the service suffers because of it.

If there were 6 stars I'd choose that. Ashley and Cam catered our Bases Loaded fundraiser in Edwardsburg for 224 guests and 26 helpers. The brisket, salmon, mash potatoes, salad and bacon green beans were luscious. Portions were generous and served hot. Price was competitive. Adorable baseball themed cupcakes were homemade. My husband and I ate at the Chubby Trout for the first time yesterday. My husband wanted to try Sushi for the first time. We heard via Facebook that the Chubby Trout has the best sushi in town. We live close to the restaurant, so my husband suggested we try it. I'm so glad we did! First of all, the restaurant is adorable. It looks like a barn. You enter through their patio seating area, which has 4 outdoor heaters. We were immediately greeted by a very friendly hostess and we were seated immediately. The inside is just as cute as the outside, with wood panel walls and cute country decor (ie wagon wheel chandeliers). We don't drink, but I did note that they offer a full liquor bar and the drinks I saw bring served looked good. The menu also listed several national brand and local craft beers. If you don't like seafood, they offer steak and a few chicken dishes and burgers. Our waitress was very friendly and super attentive. We had the Spicy Salmon and the California roll, both of which were DELICIOUS! The entire tab for the two sushi rolls and sodas (free refills!) came to $27 and we were both full when we left! We consider that a pretty good deal, especially for a full service restaurant. If you are looking for a nice, locally owned seafood restaurant, I recommend the Chubby Trout.
