this place was great. table for 4 saturday at 7:30 and zero wait. waitress was there in just a few minutes. did drink orders. took appetizer order when she brought the drinks. our first time so it took us some time to order the entrees. we had the pretzel bites. that tasted really good. be sure to get the beer cheese and the mustard. it is worth it. my wife and I shared the sampler plate. the breaded fish and shrimp were tasty. The fries were a bit limp but ni ely seasoned. friends ordered prime rib mac and cheese and the shrimp tacos. they both enjoyed their choices. both looked very appetizing. a special shout out to our waitress, Kelcie. she was dynamite. checking on us often to be sure we what we needed. I find this a problem in many restaurants. she has nice personality and was knowledgeable about the food and drink. it can be pricey. but we throughly enjoyed our evening. we will go back. read more

i want to start by saying that i love going to Chubby Trout. my husband and i enjoy coming here to eat every once in awhile. we have never had a bad experience up until we decided to book a reservation for a celebratory dinner this past Saturday. we wanted to have a small dinner party and decided what better place to celebrate with our closest friends and family than a place we genuinely enjoy dining at? well we were highly disappointed .. to start, about 7 of us ordered the crab bisque and every single person was biting into crab shells every bite of soup .. unacceptable for a soup that they charge almost $9 for! the soup was taken off the bills and we were offered soup without the crab. my father in law sat the whole dinner without a refill because our waitresses didn't get refills unless we stopped them to ask them. a couple of us ordered the pretzels for an appetizer and the beer cheese was cold, not even lukewarm just plain cold, the cooks didn't bother to warm it up at all. the second thing that bothered me was that our party was sat in a line ... i would have much rather had us all sat in the back at separate tables so we could have mingled better, i only got to socialize with who was in front of or beside me unless i got up to walk around, super annoying for a celebratory dinner... thirdly, what really upset me: everyone's dinner came out at a different time, which is somewhaunderstandable for a large group but one person didn't even get his dinner until everyone else was done eating, not cool. Well I have to begin by this place has a really nice decor, atmosphere is good. We went or should say tried to go , it was a long wait but two seats opened up on the left side of the split bar so why not we thought. Dispite the fact that there were 3 or 4 bartenders no one approach us, so we waited..... after 10 minutes we gave up. No one said hi to us no one said be right with you nothing. The food looked good just wish someone working there would have given us service so we could of tried it.bottom line if your going to have multiple bartenders working on a bar that's not huge then make sure they work the whole bar and not just the one side. read more

First time vIsitor and was a little overwhelmed by the size of the menu. Very good variety and every dish coming out looked good. I had the crab bisque soup which www one of the best I've ever had. It was hot unlike most restaurant soups that come out just warm. I also tried the fish sampler which was good. I preferred the perch over the the trout and salmon. Again, everything came out hot and wasn't over cooked. The mixers vegetable was mediocre and the mash with Garvey was very good. It was Monday so they had half off sushi too so tried some of that as well. Good experience reasonably priced. Will come back again to try some of their meat dishes. read more

Went here for dinner and was glad I did. The weather was nice for sitting out on the patio but the wait was too long so I sat at a high top inside. My server Stacie was attentive and friendly. I like being able to buy a 5 oz flight of beer for $2. The sushi came quickly and was delicious. The chubby trout looks more like salmon but Stacie said it was "North Atlantic Ruby Red" trout. Stopped into The Chubby Trout this afternoon for a quick bit to eat. When we first walked in, the ambience and the cheerful greeting that we received was very much welcomed as our trip into town had become stressful in itself. We came here on a recommendation from another local business (tire). Ashley greeted us and we explained that we were in a bit of a hurry and she quickly told us that, that would be no problem. What a pleasant surprise when our food arrived. My brother and I both ordered a burger - two different styles and they were outstanding. He had the side of chips and I had a side of fries. Ashley was a great hostess and server (sorry if we bored you with the geocaching stuff) and I have no doubt that if we were not in any hurry, we would have stayed much longer - especially looking at the draft beer menu - what a large variety to choose from. I've gone three times and the food has been pretty fresh and tasty. The last two times the hostess was pretty rude. The waitress openly complained about her bringing me to her table. Overall the menu has a lot of unique items both seafood and otherwise. The prices may be painful to the eye of a local in Elkhart but the taste is excellent. The hidden gem here, however, is the sushi. The quality and quantity of each roll is superb in this area of the country. The price is comparable to what it costs to eat sushi that you don't want to be suspicious of eating, but their half off sushi night is a great treat (Mondays, 5-7, no carry-out on the special). We have eaten here a number of times, with various friends, and everyone has ordered quite a variety of main dishes. We have yet to encounter one we hated. If you are looking for quality seafood in the entire United States, do not stop in Indiana... Anywhere. However, if you are in this area, and don't mind something mid-priced, look closer at this little shack of a restaurant, be surprised by the contrast of the excellent interior to that of the exterior, and enjoy some sushi: It's well worth it. read more

Stopped here in the middle of an 8 hour road trip with our two little kids. We were seated in the back area where the kids could stretch their legs a little. The waitress was nice and gave us some great recommendations. The crab bisque is delicious!! (Salty, but delicious.) the kids loved the grilled cheese and Mac n cheese. I went here when I was down in Indiana for work. We drove into the back and at first were not sure if we wanted to eat there. After we finally figured out how to get in it was great. Casual and you could tell full of locals. I think they were trying to figure out who were were. I of course had to have the "chubby trout" on the menu because that's what they are known for. We met friends here on Feb 19. We had 2 appetizers, onion rings and hot chicken skewers. Both are made from scratch and were very good. I ate the almond crusted walleye, fabulous. My husband had fried perch; it was tender and not oily. The couple we were with had fried blue gill, and the special which was tilapia with a remoulade sauce. All the food was tender, juicy and had really good flavor. I've been to too many restaurants that reuse oil and don't change or filter it regularly. The quality of the food is irrelevant because of how inhumane two of the staff members were. One was the hostess and the other was our waitress. I came here with a friend who has difficulty speaking--she can certainly speak, but it just takes her longer to express herself. She asked the hostess a question, the hostess looked her in the eye and then blatantly ignored her. The waitress did the same thing. The waitress also messed up my friend's food order and did not offer to correct it, and instead told her to box it up and that she could just eat it at home. This made my friend feel like less than a person, which in my mind, is inhumane. I would never recommend this restaurant. We have *never* had this sort of experience at any of restaurant. read more

They think their beer list is impressive. It is long (20 beers on tap) but just meh in selection. The food was ok. I had the Bison burger. It was a bit on the dry side because it was over cooked. I asked for medium and got medium well. Because of the lower fat content it has v. beef it really dries out if you over cook it. 4 people at our table got the signature Chubby Trout of the menu. They all report only meh. The stuffing is listed as shrimp stuffing. No one saw any shrimp. Veggies were way over salted. One person at our table ordered sushi. She reported it was only fair. The service was horrific. Every single person had something wrong with their meal or drink order. The original waitress was basically eventually replaced with a different waitress or manager who did apologize. However, other than an apology no effort was made to "make it right". Throw in a free dessert or something and a table is likely to come back and try the place again. We are not likely to go back and try the place again. The cost of the meal for two of us was $50.00. For that price it just was not worth it. read more

Nice place with very good food. I had a filet mignon and the salmon with sweet mustard sauce. Both were excellent and cooked perfectly to order. I would recommend (great sushi selection, though we didn't order any last night). Our server (Hillary) was fantastic. Easily ranks in the best service I've ever had anywhere. This was an amazing experience as last time was a little disappointing. The new location is very nice, & maybe they have new staff as well. Our waitress Michelle was great. My family and I may be a bit needy & overwhelming, she ran her ass off with a smile the whole time. The food was cooked quickly and brought to table fast as well. When your fiance's 77 year old grandmother tells you she's taking you out to dinner, you get ready to roll with the punches. Apparently Granny was well informed and I was pleasantly surprised by the Chubby Trout. I had the Mahi-Mahi sandwich and it was well prepared, if not just a bit small. My fiance had the moo-cow steak and while it wasn't anything extraordinary, it was cooked to order and served hot. His grandmother and aunt had fish baskets, although they were a bit expensive for fried fish, the breading was crisp and the fish tender. My only real complaint was with the fries. You can tell a lot about a restaurant by it's fries... A well done fry shows a true commitment to quality on even the most basic of restaurant staples. The Chubby Trout's fries were all stuck together, over fried and extremely over salted. The Chubby Trout seems like a great neighborhood hangout and I would go back on my next visit to try the sushi. We also had a dinner there Friday night and the service and the food was terrible. A substitute was not offered for a baked potato but extra vegs. was. When dinner was finally serviced the vegs. were sliced lukewarm carrots. No even warm. And we were charged extra for more vegs. The local grocery store is selling a 2# bag of carrots for 88 cents. How cheap can you get? When the manager, all of 20 years old came to the table she said that was the way the cook liked to prepare them. I guess they don't care how the patrons like their vegs. When the bill came we were noticed we were overcharged for drinks and they did adjust the bill. A WHOLE $6 for a bill that was way over $100. Oh yeah, the serving of tilapia that 2 of us had was all of maybe 2oz. Really bad customer service and really unbearably slow wait staff. We even had to wait for water. read more

First thing first, do not order Sushi here. Not worth it. As far as beverages go if you are into an adult beverage the grapefruit wheat beer is great. I am not a big fan of beer and I Loved it. We also ordered the Bison Ball appetizer and they we great but not enough for how much you pay for them. Also we order the tuna appetizer which was good. Another person we were with order a burger which is ok and also another person ordered the fried shrimp which was good. This place was not anything to rant and rave about but good for lunch. We went to chubby trout for a small wedding celebration. I want to say one thing first. Their trying to be a classy high priced restaurant with low quality food.
