This was such an amazing place! We absolutely loved all the fresh meat and vegetable options. My 7 year old daughter loved cooking all the foods. Everything was easy and simple to figure out. The service was quick and made sure to keep the area clean and teach us all we needed to know. It can get busy and the wait can be kind of long depending on when you come but it's WELLLLLL worth it! It seems like it would be loud but it's not and such a great vibe for date nights friends night or family night. Finally made it out to Chubby Skewers in Mesa! It's a Northeastern Chinese BBQ spot where you grill your own skewers table-side -- super fun concept and definitely a unique dining experience. The menu has everything from lamb and wagyu to more adventurous options like chicken hearts. Everything cooks up pretty quickly, which I appreciated -- no long waits between bites. We also ordered the vermicelli scallops from the kitchen and they were so good. Definitely recommend grabbing a few of the cooked dishes to round out your meal. Now for the downside: the pricing adds up fast. Each skewer is around $1.50 and you're really only getting 1-2 bites of meat per stick. By the end, I was kind of wishing it was all-you-can-eat -- it would make a lot more sense value-wise. Like... if Korean BBQ can do it, what's stopping y'all? This was my husband and my first time at a Chubby Skewers. The staff was very nice and explained the process to us. We scanned the QR code at our table to order fried rice and bottles of water. (We weren't aware they had containers of water and cucumber water we could have gotten for free.) You take a tray and choose what kind of vegetables and meats you want from these large refrigerators. We bring those back to our table where our charcoal has arrived. (There is a $3.99 charge per table for charcoal and $0.99 per person for dry spices.) A cheat guide showing how long everything should cook is available on the table. Each skewers only costs $1.20 each. Thr most expensive thing we had was the fried rice, which included wagu beef, for $11.99. My husband and I had a total of 14 skewers - which they count at the end. All in all, it was a marvelous meal with my hubby despite the loudness. BUT, I do have one annoying thing to report. On the way out, I saw the QR code for their frequent visitor club. We definitely planned to come back, so I scanned it and figured I would finish it later once I am home. So, the downside. Getting a paper receipt is optional, but I happened to ask for one. Then you learn that the receipt needs to be uploaded on the same day (not a big deal) AND while you are AT the restaurant. We'll, damn. $44 x 10 points per dollar. That's 440 points that I am not getting because noone mentioned the club and the rules around it. read more

Overall, I had a great experience!! The meat was excellent quality and soooo good. I like that they leave seasonings on the table for customers to try different flavors. I think that the price was fair for the amount of food you eat--it was a little bit cheaper than AYCE KBBQ at around $30/per person (this includes food, drink, AND tip!), but it adds up to that much because each skewer is kinda skimpy. It makes it easy to grab a ton of them! We ate 75 skewers between 5 people. I was happy to get to try so many different kinds of meats! Okay, this place is, different. Fun. Unique. Just know what you're getting into so you're not disappointed. Here's some of the options: fatty pork belly, chicken feet, chicken skin, chicken hearts, knuckles, fingers, pork skin, cow tongue, duck tongue, whole 6in long fish, lamb neck. It's a wild selection, not for everyone. If that is your kind of food, I'd assume you'd be in culinary heaven here. If not, well, it's still a fun experience. Beyond the food there's a few changes I would suggest: Congestion at front door / path to coolers. There's a line of people waiting to get in at the front desk. Not really a line, more like a crowd, a cluster, a mass of people. To get your food you have to cross through all these people to get to the self-serve coolers. And cross back with your trays of raw skewer meat. It's a congested area as is but they've made it much worse with their poor design causing diners to have to go back and forth through the crowd waiting at the front desk. Not well thought out. The doors on the coolers - it's all big glass doors. One opens to the left the next one opens to the right. So two people can't open two doors to get their food at the same time. If all the doors opened in the same direction, people could get their food easier and there would be less waiting in front of the coolers. And less confusion. Even better would might have been sliding doors instead of doors that swing way out causing everyone to have to keep backing up every time a door needs to be opened. What's what? once you load a half dozen skewers onto your platter and get back to the table, you put them on the grill. At this point none of us could remember or identify by sight what most of the skewers were. What kind of meat was that again? I don't remember! Want to go back for more of a specific skewer? Good luck finding it. All the red meats look the same. All the white meats look the same. Especially cooked. By the end of the meal we were all saying "I don't know what I just ate." The tables are too small and the table legs are only 4" in front of the bench seats. Makes it hard to get in and out. And once the grill is on the table, then each person gets their platter of skewers and the plates to eat from, there's just no room to hardly move. Barely room to set a drink glass anywhere. Skewer receptacles - after eating the meat off a skewer you're to place it in the skewer can. Except it's at the end of the table and 18" up. So only the two people sitting right next to it can do it without reaching over anyone else's plate or head. A piece of fish fell off one skewer right into my wife's drink. So I started piling my skewers on her plate for her to put in the can. Bad design. Too awkward and inconvenient. The menu/ordering process: it's only on the app. You scan the QR code on the table. It first asks how many, 1,2,3,4 at the decks. Two of us scanned it so we weren't sure if we each say 2, one says 4, both say 4, what? It then asks what we want. But is it for 1? For all 4? Can we split the bill? How do I order an iced tea? We ask the wait person. He says he will do it all for us. I look at my phone and it says 4 people, and shows we ordered drinks. He put it in. We ask do we put it in or you? He says either but he will do it all for us from his device. Which was a relief since we didn't really get their app layout. But also a little annoying. Why make it so complicated? Why not just have menus like the other billion successful restaurant do? Charges: they say it's only $1.20 per skewer. It is, but... they charge a buck a person up front for the spices, a buck for the grill and a buck for something else, I forget what. So before skewer #1 we were charged $12. Our dinner for 4 came out to over $120. We had 39 skewers, some noodles, rice and 4 drinks (two were alcohol). 39 may sound like a lot of food, but each skewer is just a tiny bit of food, equivalent to one Chicken McNugget. Anyway, I consider $30-$35 per person fair for a dinner for four I guess, but the "$1.00 a skewer" advertising gives the impression this place will be a cheap night out. Not so. So my recommendation: I still say give it a try. Maybe you will love it. It wasn't for me. Just remember, watch your knee when sitting down, that table leg will surprise you if you don't expect it. read more

We got there right at opening time and there was already a line of 30+ people waiting to check in but gladly they were efficient with their check in process. The food and selection were great but the price of the skewers add up. Everything cost money. The sauces, the charcoal, rice, skewers, anything. If you're willing to pay the money it's definitely worth it' I don't think there's any other kind of restaurant like this. The inside and restrooms are clean. However, I don't like how the minimum tip option is 18%. There is hardly any service being done here. There is more service at a Korean bbq place than here. You have to get up and get your own skewers and cook them. You have to get your own trays and condiments and everything. The only thing you don't do yourself is bring the charcoal grill out and get served any additional drinks or side dishes. So I think it's rude to expect such high tip for such little service being done. I personally am someone who I'll go above and beyond for great service but only when it's deserved. read more
