In my back yard, I have a pool and behind it a hill. On the hill side of the pool was a deck. The fourth time (so I am a slow learner) my foot went thru the deck, I knew that the 25 year old deck was shot. I went to a deck and patio expo conducted by Ashley Lumber in Concord. I visited 4 booths. Each one had pictures of previous jobs and the quality looked great. I signed up for free estimates with all four.
I told all of them that I was not bonded by the current design and would love to entertain any suggestions they might have. Three of them measured the area and gave me estimates.
Chris was different. He listened to us. Because of the hill slope, part of the existing deck was elevated. There is a reason that his web site is "awardwinningdecks.com"
He is an artist!!! He gave many suggestions: "if you expand the elevated section it will shorted the lower part and it will not look like a boat dock" (TRUE!!!), " Adding some planters and benches on the poolside deck edge will improve the look and safety" (TRUE!!!)
He also commented that the retaining wall on the hill side might needed replacing. Only after the old deck is removed, could one make that assessment. The other three bids did not mention this. When the old deck was removed (on the day Chris said it would) it was VERY obvious that Chris was right and that additional cost was added to the project. In spite of this major addition to the work load, the project was completed within the time period that was proposed without the retaining wall replacement.
Lets talk about construction. I am a nerdy engineer and have always had the motto "there are only 2 ways to do everything... do it right or do it over. Chris never had to do it over!!! When setting the piers to support the deck, unlike other companies that use a long level to level one pier to the next, Chris sighted in the piers with a transit. If you are not a engineer, I'll clarify it: my deck IS level and IS horizontal from one end to the other. All this work was done around my pool. I expected that stuff would end up in the pool. His guys worked very careful and policed the area daily. No issues with the pool occurred.
I also have a deck right outside the back door. It was not in bad condition. However, after the upper deck was done, this deck now looked sad. Again. Chris the, design artist, suggested some changes. This second project was done the next month, on time and PERFECT!!!!
When one sells a house the concept of "curb appeal" is usually addressed. However, since I have a pool, and my listing would be in that group, potential buyers would have an elevated interest in the backyard. I wanted "backyard appeal" I wanted them to come around back and say WOW.
Everyone, and I mean everyone who comes in my yard says WOW!!!
