We have used Avon Construction twice to build a total of 3 retaining walls. The first one was an…read moreengineered retaining wall after a landslide on our property. The second was a wall we shared with our neighbors for our shared road. The third was a wall to wrap around our property to protect our house from any future landslides. Each time, everything about the process was FANTASTIC. Steve and Kristin were so accommodating, comforting, and communicative. The walls are absolutely stunning--we get comments about how nice they are all the time. Steve is a really nice guy--he is genuine, knowledgeable, honest, and he had an understanding that the work he is doing is a significant financial investment for us and so concerns are handled compassionately, with utmost patience. Steve's crew is full of respectful, considerate individuals who leave the worksite in excellent condition each time (and I have high standards!). Kristin's prompt communication was excellent (as was Steve's) and we were very pleased that with each project, the quote was accurate. When there was dump fees (I think for soil--but not sure--they had to hire trucks), we were informed well ahead of time and told why, and even then, we prepared for the fees, and they came in under budget. We cannot recommend Avon more highly--budget willing, we would use them again and again!

After seeing some stone work at a friends in Lamorinda we were referred to Steve and Avon and the work didn't disappoint. They were 100% on target with the style, their bid (when was the last time you didn't have to do a change order?!) and their layout and leveling recommendations. Also, and very importantly, the crew was always on time, patient with parking challenges, gracious and open to engage. The lead onsite took detailed notes, and the team was methodical and diligent. We have them coming back for two more projects and would refer them first for stone and masonry work. Project: front retaining wall customer cut around coast live oak roots. Back path with steps and landing in pavers, pergola patio leveled and filled with cross hatch brick, back patio in pavers with customer cut edging for grass, brick retaining wall and leveling for new sod, hothbub pad and walls customer cut to fit tub, planter box in pavers. Brian, Holly, and Gerardo are the best…read more When I contacted them initially two years ago, within the first 10 minutes of talking they'd recognized that our house was not a simple brace & bolt project given its soft story and referred me to a structural engineer (who himself was excellent) for review/evaluation. I begin with this because that structural engineer mentioned he'd had Brian do his own retrofitting and highly recommended him, which was the only endorsement I needed. The scope of the work was soft story retrofit (incl. excavation at the front of the garage to install a Hardy frame, adding in shear walls with bolts, shear wall with URFP ties all along the house's perimeter) as well as adding in anchors (e.g., hand dug piers, rebar, concrete) in the front and back of the house to prevent the house from further sinking. We initially applied for and got into the ESS program, which Brian/Holly guided us through (pulling permits, getting photos, contacting our engineer for letters/responses on ESS program follow-ups). As in the first time and every subsequent time, they were swift and helpful in responding. ESS, if you don't know (like I didn't), goes through FEMA and requires FEMA review and approval of your plans at each step of the way, but the whole program came to a standstill in 2025-26. We had no updates despite us and Brian/Holly repeatedly following up. We gave up on ESS in April and decided to move ahead with the retrofit. Brian was able to work us into his schedule and work began early May and work was completed in just a little over two weeks, a full week faster than I expected. The whole time Brian/Holly kept us apprised of the status, schedule, and inspections; and forwarded us all documentation and pictures as they came up. The crew was efficient and detailed and did thorough clean ups of the worksite after each day. We felt in control and informed the whole time and are confident in the result; I'd hire them again in a heartbeat.
