I can't share enough positive things about Steve and the crew at Avon. Our home is relatively old for the area and has a specific look and feel. After seeing some stone work at a friends in Lamorinda we were referred to Steve and Avon and the work didn't disappoint. They were 100% on target with the style, their bid (when was the last time you didn't have to do a change order?!) and their layout and leveling recommendations. Also, and very importantly, the crew was always on time, patient with parking challenges, gracious and open to engage. The lead onsite took detailed notes, and the team was methodical and diligent. We have them coming back for two more projects and would refer them first for stone and masonry work. Project: front retaining wall customer cut around coast live oak roots. Back path with steps and landing in pavers, pergola patio leveled and filled with cross hatch brick, back patio in pavers with customer cut edging for grass, brick retaining wall and leveling for new sod, hothbub pad and walls customer cut to fit tub, planter box in pavers. We have used Avon Construction twice to build a total of 3 retaining walls. The first one was an engineered retaining wall after a landslide on our property. The second was a wall we shared with our neighbors for our shared road. The third was a wall to wrap around our property to protect our house from any future landslides. Each time, everything about the process was FANTASTIC. Steve and Kristin were so accommodating, comforting, and communicative. The walls are absolutely stunning--we get comments about how nice they are all the time. Steve is a really nice guy--he is genuine, knowledgeable, honest, and he had an understanding that the work he is doing is a significant financial investment for us and so concerns are handled compassionately, with utmost patience. Steve's crew is full of respectful, considerate individuals who leave the worksite in excellent condition each time (and I have high standards!). Kristin's prompt communication was excellent (as was Steve's) and we were very pleased that with each project, the quote was accurate. When there was dump fees (I think for soil--but not sure--they had to hire trucks), we were informed well ahead of time and told why, and even then, we prepared for the fees, and they came in under budget. I started out with the hope of getting by as cheap as I could. I found a friend of a friend who knew how to pour and stamp cement. He gave me a very low 6.5k quote and I was thrilled about all the cash I would be saving. I was going for a new staircase and two retaining walls on either side. 2.5k into the job, the stair frame looked a little crooked and it seemed like they were going through the cash pretty quick. When I questioned the fella about the lopsided frame, he got upset and we parted ways. Now my yard was a DMZ and I was out 2.5k. I reached out to everyone with at least 3 stars on yelp within 50 miles and crossed my fingers. Then I met Steve from Avon Masonry. He was honest, unassuming and extremely adept on how to move forward. He quickly noted the problems with the current design, proposed a solution, and kept it in my budget. Within a week the stairs were in and came out fantastic. I contracted him to also go on to complete the retaining walls. The retaining walls are absolutely breathtaking. I cannot be more pleased. They are so much more than I thought possible. Not only is Steve a high quality, straight shooting, honest person, his crew are the exact same. His crew was top notch. I couldn't say enough good things about Steve, Ricky and Jill. We spent 1 month interviewing contractors for the 100ft retaining wall in our backyard. Steve's price was about the same as everyone else's, maybe a little lower, however, Steve was able to provide far more value than the other contractors. For roughly the same price, we got 50% more wall AND a beautiful staircase. The project stayed on budget and was completed in 75% of the time that Steve thought it would take (and no shortcuts were taken to meet either of these qualifications; in fact, we made the decision to add another layer of block to the wall in the middle of the project, and they still finished in 9 days, when Steve estimated 12-13 days; his crew worked incredibly hard.) Ricky, Steve's foreman on this project, was both highly efficient and friendly; I had questions for him multiple times in the morning before I left for work, and he, both patiently and with a smile on his face, answered all of my questions. Ricky and his team laid down protective materials and took great care to not damage any of the existing structures that we have, despite having to move a significant amount of machinery in and out of our yard. Jill handled all of the administrative duties associated with this project and was always prompt and professional with responses. Steve Avon is an expert mason. We were so grateful to find his company during Covid after calling many others that wouldn't return our call for a repair job. Our project required deep understanding of different rock types, how to engineer around a sheer fountain wall, and to repair within existing stonework for it to look seamless. We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. We have very high standards and Steve exceeded our expectations. The team was top notch and the work exceptional. Avon came out and looked at a walkway I needed to work on. Sent me an estimate. The price was the same for either bricks or concrete; I know concrete is usually less expensive. I declined at first then called them back and said I wanted to go with them if they could let me know why the same price for either. I did not hear back. I emailed them again - nothing. So I don't know what it is lately about the construction trade's lack of ethics. maybe it's always been this way, but i'm used to people being respectful of my time and my money. Not here. read more

For the 3rd time in 4 years, we hired Avon Construction for some stone work at our house. And for the 3rd time, Steve and his crew did not disappoint. Back in 2017, we had them build a 70+ foot retaining wall along our backyard and created a couple terraces levels for future projects. We have a very large backyard with a steep hill at the end, which was virtually unusable. Not anymore. After they completed that work . He left us a 8 foot wide ramp of dirt that I planned to build my own wood stairs. More on that later. Then in 2019, we brought them back to extend the retaining wall to our front yard with a couple of curved terraces there. We still get compliments from passing neighbors on that work. After my attempt to build a wood staircase and my wife and I not agreeing on how to tie it into Steve's work, we decided to call in the professionals. They removed the staircase with my makeshift ramp that I found helpful to moving materials up to the top terrace. Avon not only tied in their work with the new stairs perfectly, but also created a concrete ramp along side it. We couldn't be happier with the work they have done for us over the years. read more

For my local yocals, I highly recommend Avon Construction. I have been using Avon Construction since 2006. Avon just completed another project at my house. My backyard had a deck, rocks and concrete. Avon came in and took the deck, rocks and broke up all the concrete within 2 days. The crew then laid out all the re-bar for the new patio with a circular band for a tree. The concrete pour went great and the finished product made a once fragmented backyard, flow and feel relaxing. From the beginning when we first met with Steve we were impressed and pleased by how he seemed to understand what we were looking for. We had gotten a 2nd bid, but felt Steve had the best understanding and feedback to help us in fulfilling our request. He followed up with the bid in timely fashion, was able to initiate and complete the work within an above average time frame. The workers were polite and professional throughout. They were respectful of our property and were careful to clean up after themselves. The attention to detail was evident in making sure the wall was solid and secure and appropriate drainage needs addressed to prevent future problems. The completed design turned out beautiful, full of texture and fluidity of movement evident throughout the entire wall. a few weeks ago I hired Steve Avon to repair my concrete wall that runs along the side of my house. large redwood trees that provide shade and privacy to my house over the past 15 years however have gradually broken the wall in several places and the City sent me a letter to repair of replace the wall. replacing would have cost me more than 25K and my insurance carrier declined to pay as this kind of tree damage is not covered by most insurance companies. This is where Steve came up with a cost-effective and reliable method to repair the more than 60 feet of 6 feet tall concrete wall. his crew worked for 5 days and completed a fantastic job of repairing the wall to the satisfaction of the City. His crew led by Leo was the best I have seen in years. they were on time, polite, pleasant to talk to and did the work with a smile. I was 100% satisfied with their performance of a very tricky and difficult structural damage to repair. They went over and above to make sure that the wall columns were properly welded to the base metal which was not included in the contract pricing. Steve and his crew just completed a 40 foot stacked block retaining wall for us. He came in and gave us options and then helped us decide on what would be the best choice for what we wanted...long lasting, no maintenance, strong & stable at a reasonable cost. Steve was a straight talker w/years of experience to back up his recommendations. He answered any questions I had for him regarding materials, structural stability, timelines, etc. He got his guys on the job within a couple days of agreeing on the scope of work. His crew removed all the old materials, excavated for the new wall, poured a footing and had the wall up within about 3-4 days from start to finish. They even added a few extra drains to ensure the wall's stability over time. We are thrilled with the look of the new wall. With all the work we've had done at our house over the years, I'm not sure any crew has done as good a job cleaning up as the workers at Avon. The place was spotless.
