We loved working with West Coast Hardscape to fix our backyard disaster in San Francisco; the monkey on our back that shady contractors inflicted upon us when they ruined our property last year. I'm sooo busy lately but I'm also very design and detail oriented, so I was really afraid of leaving this project without an any supervision during one of my busiest travel schedule to date. From our first consultation, Michael felt like a genuine dude whom I could trust to get the job done, so I didn't feel like I had to manage anything or directly keep tabs on their work for the month or two it was completed AND WE STILL got the most gorgeous paver patio with curves to die for that I didn't even have to spec out myself. I hired Michael and his team for a large hardscape project. To his credit, he has at times gone above and beyond -- for example, hauling away construction debris that wasn't his to keep the site clean. But in general, he has not been able to provide a crew that delivers work matching the quality you'd expect for the price. His crew frequently doesn't show up, and he often doesn't know where they are. When they are on site, they drink alcohol and smoke heavily. One day they appeared to have thrown a party, leaving food and beer bottles scattered across my yard for me to clean up. They've also taken items from the job site belonging to the homeowners and never replaced them. They've made decisions that put people's safety at risk, with no urgency to fix them. The main steps to my yard had to be redone because they were all different sizes and sloping down. Instead of making a plan to ensure a rapid repair, they tore up the stains and left the site a hazard. He then asked for payment for materials and tools to redo his mistakes. Michael doesn't seem to have real control over his crew and only shows up when an issue is escalated or when he needs payment. As homeowners, we shouldn't have to micromanage a contractor this closely just to know what his own crew is doing or when to expect them. On multiple occasions, his crew told him they were on site when they clearly were not. We have cameras. He also asked me to cover the cost of tools he should already have as a professional in this trade -- for instance, a wet stone-cutting tool to control concrete dust and protect his workers from inhaling it. Despite asking multiple times, his crew seemed resentful when I requested wet cuts, even for their safety. At this point, having already been paid roughly 90% of the total cost, it seems he doesn't have the funds left to finish the job and is now stuck. Westcoast Hardscape did an amazing job on our backyard. They tore down our existing patio overhang and concrete, and built a large new pergola, and also poured new concrete. They installed artificial turf as well. Ground lighting in the turf, and recessed lighting in our pergola ceiling completed the project. They also brainstormed with us on a couple problem areas like poor drainage under a downspout, and moving a water faucet to a better location. I think the thing I appreciated about them the most was the communication from Michael. He let us know when the crew would be out and visited our yard frequently while the job was underway. His quote was accurate, and I was VERY happy not to get change ordered to death. And Cesar - his lead for this project - was BRILLIANT! He seemed to know everything and gave great advice and ideas. No shortcuts were taken, only high quality products were used, and I know it will last decades. Should we have another project, we will definitely use Westcoast Hardscape again. read more

There were times when I was indecisive on what color pavers or type of stones or thickness/color of turfs to pick, and he would order and drop off samples to help make the decision easier. Mike at Westcoast Hardscape did a great job with our driveway in 2021. It was a big job and his price was very competitive. After getting started, within 2 weeks his crew had removed all the old asphalt, installed new drainage pipes and other conduits, put in the new base-rock and sand and laid down the pavers. Even the neighbors were impressed with the speed and quality of the work. So a few months ago when I needed to redo my backyard, I didn't shop around and just called Mike. Within 4 weeks (delayed due to rain), I had new drainage, irrigation, pavers and lawn. It looks wonderful and again his price was very reasonable. Mike and his crew have really good attention to detail, use high quality products and don't try to cut corners. And if I noticed something small that looked a bit off, they were receptive to feedback and always willing to fix it. Super happy with the work that Mike and his team did. We needed pavers to removed from our playground and replaced with cement slabs. We also needed wood chips between the cement slabs for an additional sensory play area. Westcoast Hardscape was not only reasonably priced but also professional and super timely in executing the project. They were able to repair parts of the foundation that was only revealed after they removed the old concrete. Mike and West Coast failed to deliver on our project. Everything starts off great, and we even overlooked small mistakes, like cutting down our lemon tree. Once one our $5k installment payments apparently went towards bail money, the job fell apart. The fence has fallen apart in places. A fence post was installed in a way that blocked a window from being able to open, and they had to be convinced that this was an issue. Three out of four gate handles pulled right off in the first three months. Fence was never stained per our original project scope. Entire backyard on a single irrigation line that was put in as after thought. Been chasing Mike for followup for over a year and just over it. Buyer beware. read more

I emailed him, texted him, and called him multiple times over many months. When he did respond, he said he would do the work, but then never followed through and it's been months. He stopped by at some point and said his crew would complete the work in two weeks and then never came back, despite texts, phone calls, and emails. I strongly do not recommend using this company if you want your work completed. I've never experienced anything like this before with any other company I've ever worked with. At first Mike was really engaged in our project. Since it is a custom built fence with knotwood aluminum, I wanted to include him in the design phase and get his feedback on the material list before ordering. After waiting more than a week despite being told he will get it to me by the weekend. The quantities where way off when I let him know the cost of each piece and our desire to stay within a set budget he said he would look over the numbers. Another week passed and still no response despite emails and voicemail. When I finally reached out to say that we were going to find another general contractor to help us with the project he finally responded that he was busy and understood our decision.
