We've never been in the bar "half" of this one, but all I have to say is: Try The Lamb. It's the best I've ever had. They put some sort of herb, bread crumb, and cheese dry rub on it that is out of this world. It's always cooked perfectly, and the portion size is quite large. Very much worth the $24 price tag. We've been here numerous times, and this lamb dish is consistently knock-out quality. The only reason this isn't a five-star is because the other meals we've ordered have been so/so. The seasonal vegetables are procured locally, the mash is great, and the escargot is delicious. One of my favorite things here is the bread and olive oil dip. They keep the olives in the olive oil, and you can pick them out and eat them with the bread....amazing. I've noticed that the bar half is always over-crowded and extremely loud. A good place for a burger! If that sounds like weak praise, it ISN't. A good burger is hard to find. Have eaten here (dined is a bit grand of a word) in the bar side three times. Usually a burger, because it's fast and consistently good and well priced and BIG... Have NOT been in the dining room side for formal meals, but it wouldn't occur to me to do that, since Martin's is, in my opinion at least, mostly a great place to meet people before going out on the town. Grab a beer, split a burger, chat and then suck it in to look fashionable somewhere else. Its a bar, it has a great unpretentious bar scene with dedicated bar habitues and the bar food is good, but don't confuse it as a gourmet foodie temple, like Red or Miso or Oaxaca Kitchen, but don't expect to pay those kinds of prices, either. I used to live a block away from this place, and I came to really love it! The food and drinks are great, and the atmosphere is probably the closest to "Cheers" I've ever known in real life. I felt recognized and known when I went there (not because they knew me really, but just because that was the attitude of the entire staff), and the whole vibe the place fosters is community-oriented. It feels more like you're dealing with real people than with a business. We ended up having our wedding welcome party there, and it was absolutely perfect. They threw in some free finger foods, and the guests loved the space. It was a blast. We miss CMs now that we've moved out of state - we'll be sure to visit when we're in town! read more

Tried the lamb slider with caramelized onions, the filet mignon with Gorgonzola and horseradish sauce /truffle infused mashed potatoes and ended with white chocolate mousse. Everything was incredible til the dessert which was disappointing. The mouse was wonderful but chocolate sauce topping tasted premade or like Hershey syrup. A neighborhood meeting place, warm and welcoming on our arrival. We sampled the many wonderful choices offered for Taste of New Haven, a bigger variety than most. My lobster bisque was rich flavorful and with many lobster pieces. The beef brisket spring rolls with course ground mustard was a hit also. The mesqualin salad was perfectly seasoned, letting the suttle flavors of the leaves come through. Both the filet and duck brest were perfectly cooked, with flavorful sides - truffle oil flavored potatoes and red cabbage with a hint of sweetness. Used a Groupon for dinner of 4 which included 2 apps, 4 entrees and 4 glasses of wine. The appetizers: hot clams and calamari. The clams were awesome. The calamari could have been a tad crispier but other than that pretty good. Entrees: my sister who is a raw fish fan ordered the tuna which said said was excellent ; boyfriend ordered the filet mignon which was rated as excellent as well; brother in law ordered the filet mignon along with lobster, the filet again, excellent but lobster not so great as it was not cooked enough. I ordered the black bean and corn burrito which was AMAZING (if you like a spicy Mexican I highly recommend!) The service was excellent and our waitress, Janelle was lovely and engaged in small talk with us. Our dinner reservation was at 7:45 and they had a band in the bar section at that time which we will be checking out another time. My only recommendation would be for them to expand the menu to include a few more vegetarian options...minimal options if you are a veggie. read more

Great food with excellent bartenders, definitely easy to become a "regular" fast! Chicken Parm is a must (w/ extra sauce on the side), pulled pork burrito, turkey club (in house roasted, no slimy deli meat here), and southern wings w/ chipotle ranch are all delicious. Oh and don't forget the French Onion soup-a 10!! You can switch breads and sides with all sandwiches (veggies, soup, addicting fries, onion rings, salad) and the more formal menu offers Italian/American fare with LOCAL produce/ingredients. Outdoor seating is available both on the bar side and 2-3 tables on the more formal dining side. Complete bar with good tap selection; 2 large flat screen TV's on the bar side; good happy hour, always with something tasty from the kitchen; reasonably priced. I REALLY wish this place was better since I live just around the corner, but Christopher Martin's is the kind of place that just barely arrives at *good enough*. The beers selection isn't that hot, the crowd ranges from fairly tame to fairly lame, but if you feel like watching the game there are worse options. This isn't the kind of place I would go expecting to meet someone interesting, but it isn't a bad option if you have a group of friends to bring there with you. Came here for lunch with a restaurant.com GC. Service was slightly slow, waited almost 45 minutes for my entree. The crab cake appetizer was a bit too bready, but cooked well and presentation was nice. The aioli was a bit too acidic for my taste. I got the chicken tenders & pancetta for my entree. The presentation was lacking. It looked like someone threw up on my plate. It needed color, the sage cream sauce was off-white and blanketed the whole dish. The macadamia crumble was the same color and didnt stand out. A chiffonade of fresh sage would have made all the difference. The chicken was prepared well, but the pancetta wasnt rendered properly, it wasnt crispy at all, it was stringy and gristly. I feel as if it added nothing to the dish. The sweet potato ravioli paired surprisingly well with the macadamia nuts and the sage cream sauce. The more I ate, it became strangely addictive. Got takeout from here the other day with a few coworkers for lunch. The service was pretty quick. For an order for 6 people the food was ready for pick-up in around 20 minutes. I've never dined-in here, but it looks like your average pub on the bar side. The food was decent. I ordered the cajun chicken sandwich with a curly fries. I never knew this restaurant/bar excited until this past weekend and I have been a New Haven native for quite some time now. A few of my friends and I met there for late night get together and it definitely had that very olden day type of bar vibe to it. It wasn't quite packed since it was a Sunday at 11pm but there were a handful of people there. We sat ourselves and the server came up to us and took our drink orders. Both servers were quite pleasant and checked on us several times throughout the course of the night. Even after they closed, they didn't scurry us out and let us leave on our own accord which I appreciated. There was also no obnoxious person yelling "LAST CALL". I understand why they do that but that can be so annoying especially if the person's voice is cringe-worthy. All in all, it was a pretty cool bar and a great place for a low key night. My wife and I went here for a romantic dinner for two. The atmosphere was really pleasant and comfortable. I made the mistake however of ordering the lamb because the photos of it look so wonderful. The problem is, I hate lamb. Not their fault of course. My wife enjoyed her dinner, however it came with some weird cold vegetable on the side that basically was some sort of sprout concoction. She hated it, and I must admit it had a strange texture especially because it is served cold. Also my candle wasn't lit. We like lit candles on the table. Minus one star for that. Other than that we had a fun night. I don't suggest using their bathroom. They are attached to a bar on the other side of the restaurant and the bathroom basically gets destroyed. read more

A friend brought me here, claiming that this place is her "Cheers", and I fell in love with it right away. Why? They have Woodchuck on draft. Do you know how hard it is to come by Woodchuck in CT? The place is completely laid-back and unpretentious, which is exactly what a bar should be. It's a bar you can actually hold a conversation in without being drowned out by music. My boyfriend and I went here on a rainy Monday night. The restaurant was virtually empty which I expected. Our server, Rob, was awesome. He was courteous and knowledgeable of the menu. We ordered the Amalfi Spring Rolls as an app. They came out piping hot! And were very yummy. For entrees we ordered the Chicken Saltimbocca and the Beef Short Ribs. Both were delicious. The food here is beyond incredible and the staff is just lovely. Chris (the owner) really cares not only about his customers but his community. Every year on Thanksgiving the man opens his doors and provides 3 course thanksgiving feast (with waitress service, linen tables cloths-the whole nine yards) for hundreds of people who would otherwise go without. But he doesn't stop there he then turns his bar into a mini mall and lets people "shop" for winter coats, canned goods, and clothing. You would think that would be enough but no he then turn right around and a few weeks later does a huge toy drive for needy kids! We had a Restaurant.com coupon, so my daughter decided this as the place to have her back to school dinner. When we walked in, a few people were eating outside and the place inside was empty and looked very much like a sports bar. The loud music gave her a headache and we were about to bail and go elsewhere, but as we were leaving, the hostess said that there was another room, more formal, and would we like to see it. With my daughter's approval, we went in and it was like walking into another restaurant. The music from the sports bar was still audible, but at a greatly reduced volume and in place of the wood paneled bar room, we were in a peach walled, white table clothed restaurant. What a difference!! We kept it simple, no appetizers, just entrees, which come with a very simple salad. I really liked the vinaigrette, my daughter felt the dressing was too sparse. The main courses were both terrific. She had the salmon with a sweet asian sauce over a bed of fried rice and I had the shrimp and clams over linguine. We both finished every bite. The service from our waiter, Wes and the rest of the staff, including the hostess whose name I didn't get, was superb. Attentive without being overbearing. My iced tea refilled without asking, one of my tests of any good restaurant. The only negative I'd put on Christopher Martins would be the prices. It's a bit pricey. Entrees run from a low of $15, but most are in the $20- $27 range. Our meal, 2 entrees and one drink ran $51. They do offer a lower priced bar menu in the sports bar, which is also available upon request in the nicer half. read more

The chicken saltimbocca was scrumptious and my wife enjoyed the chicken tenders and panetta. Quiet on the dining room side so conversation was easy but we were still able to enjoy the sound of the great band on the bar side. I've been to Christopher Martins Pub a few times in the past 12 months and always sat on the Pub side and had drinks and food from the Pub menu. There has not been one time when I did not have a good meal there. Its nothing mind blowing - just quality pub food. They are in a weird location and it is hard to find a parking spot though sometimes they do have valet for a few bucks. Recently I was there with 4 other people and had a great experience... much better than say Eli's. I had the mushroom Swiss cheeseburger and it was excellent. Everyone enjoyed his or her food. One specific note is that the waitress was probably one of the hardest working waitresses I have ever seen at a pub - she didn't skip a beat. My friends and I go to this restaurant when we want some cold draft beer, lively crowd (though yes, sometimes too old) and food that doesn't taste like run of the mill pub food. Its comfort food and I recommend it for a Red Sox game or a good sandwich. Never been to the restaurant side however... so I can't speak for that half. read more

Came here on a weekend after purchasing the Groupon deal. I eat in New Haven a lot but have never tried Christopher Martins. Unfortunately, I probably won't be back. The cost of the food is pricey and the quality is nothing special. We got the scallops appetizer and it was very confused. Waaaay too much going on. The scallops were cooked perfectly but they had a sweet pomegranate sauce and then some kind of puréed avocado next to them. The flavor combination was bizarre and it overwhelmed the scallops to the point of ruining the dish. For dinner, we got the beef tips and lobster over linguini special and then a mixed grill with a salmon burger, lamb, and filet mignon. All of the meat was cooked nicely but again, no big wow on the flavor. The linguini dish was a mess, to be honest. It was bland and the beef tips didn't add anything. They were small and chewy and tasteless. To make the visit even weirder, we walked into the bar first by accident and thought we were in the wrong place because the bar is a dive. Overall: save your money for Miya's or literally any other restaurant in New Haven at this price point. This place is nothing special and the dining room is kind of depressing and dated. They need to redecorate. And also possibly hire a chef who knows what he or she is doing when it comes to flavor. read more

I've been to the Pub twice. The first time was after work, and I enjoyed a great meal with my husband. The service was great and very attentive. We decided we definitely needed to go back. Unfortunately, the wrong time to go for dinner is Friday night. We were looking forward to the loud and lively atmosphere, but hoping for the same great service. The atmosphere was great, but the service was lousy. If you're going for drinks, it's a great place. If you're going for food, the staff will ignore you the whole time. Christopher Martin's was once known for setting standards....not so much with our last experience. This review is getting two stars only because our meals were delicious, portions were perfect, and waiter tried to be attentive, making sure water glasses were full, bringing bread, condiments, etc. Went for lunch with 6 friends from work. Service was very slow. Server was very polite, but seemed very inexperienced. We were never offered beverages. He struggled to pronounce some if the specials. One of my friends offered to put the bill on her credit card and we would all settle with her back at work. Waiter took her credit card in the check portfolio, and carried it around for a bit, noting at one point it was even in the pocket of his cargo shorts. He removed our dirty plates, brought take out containers to us, and then informed my friend the credit card wasn't in the portfolio, (I saw the card when he removed my plate - she definitely put it in the slot). After disappearing for a few minutes he appeared and told us HE would have to pay for our meals unless the card was found. He took my friend's name and number. My friends and I looked for the card for 10 minutes or so. The manager walked by us at least twice during this time. He did not acknowledge our situation at all. No apology. No concern. No sense of urgency. We left and a very short while later they called my friend...for another credit card number to pay the bill! No offer of any type of discount for the aggravation she has to go through cancelling the card and getting a new one, the time missed from work to do so, etc. We noticed the credit card slot was ripped when the waiter reported the card missing. Hope they look at replacing any others in this condition so this doesn't happen again. As of now my friends and I are very disappointed and will not be back. I really used to like this restaurant, had been going for years, until today. Today our waiter was rude and demanding and expressed that he hates serving us. He expressed himself as a if the mere site of us ruined his day. His outburst was all because my husband asked for the wifi password and I asked for a plastic cup for our toddler. But all of his reservations of us were bc he didn't want to clean our table, and he didn't liked the way we speak. Ok then. When we told the manager, he said if we didn't like it there we can leave. My only issue is that I don't want my child to be disrespected. N for the record, we never direspected that person or anyone there. That's just ridiculous. read more

I don't really care for the crowd - but I stopped in here for a quick bite. It was rather laid back, but I really liked their outdoor patio area. The Cajun grilled chicken wrap I ordered was yummy, as well as the fries. Their menu seemed like a decent pub menu with some entrees also. That staff seemed awesome - and we got excellent service. Food was brought out fast and our waitress always made sure to check on us. Didn't stay long - but I can't say anything negative about the place. The other reviews might be somewhat accurate, but I'll give this place 5 stars based on my experience. read more
