Best contractors I've ever worked with! They recently completed a major bathroom remodel for me, from total demolition and expansion through the final details. They do extremely high-quality work, have terrific attention to detail, and take real pride in getting things right. Just as importantly, they are trustworthy, fair, responsive, and a genuine pleasure to work with. I mostly worked with Jesse Christensen, but I can say the same about all my dealings with his brother Josh, their crew, and all of their subs. I felt like I was in very good hands throughout the entire project. I'd also suggest taking the one 1-star review from Delairen B. with a very large grain of salt. I can only guess they were thinking of someone else! Jesse was quick to respond to every communication, and "follow-through" seems to be one of his many specialties. I would recommend avoiding Christiensen Brothers Construction. They came out to my home to do an estimate and then strung me along for a month saying that they would get the estimate to me soon before finally telling me that they were too overwhelmed and needed to pass on our project. I could have begun work weeks ago if not for their poor follow through, lack of communication and inability to accurately assess their ability to take on a project before wasting a clients time. read more

This was our first experience with home remodeling and I was terrified. I thought, "lots of money, constant oversight, disregarded timetables." None of this happened with CBC - Jesse, Josh, Chris, Julie and the many excellent subcontractors they work with transformed my house under budget and in less time than they initially predicted. The work is top notch - lots of attention to detail, the work areas were always left super-clean, information consistently well communicated, work was fast and efficient. One of the things I appreciated most was that Jesse would recommend things - extra insulation, a board placement, a design element or a structural consideration - that let me know he was treating my house like his own house. In the end, these suggestions turned out to make all the difference. The team worked seamlessly with my designer and indeed were almost like another team of designers to bring beauty and excellence to the house. The quality of the work is outstanding. We remodeled the kitchen, dining room, family room, hallway and entryway. The only bad thing is that the work ended and I don't get to hang with Jesse and Julie and Chris everyday anymore. So, very happy to finally see a yelp page for these guys. They did a complete remodel of my Oakland Hills home in 2011. I have been in the construction management business for years, and picked these guys after seeing their work on a neighbors house. Their bid was fair, I actually picked it over another contractors bid for less money...best move I ever did (and the amount was not very much, maybe a few grand)... That decision saved me a ton in additional change orders and more than anything, these guys turned me on to a fabulous team of sub contractors. As far as the change orders go, these guys were always super cool about it. Some guys always count on plan changes to make their profit, not Jesse and Josh. They deal with the changes (usually an architect mistake or oversight, or even owner changes) as realistic changes, not an opportunity to exploit the owner. If you want fancy paperwork and secretaries who you are paying salaries for, go with someone else. If you want to get the work done right and be able to contact someone with authority at any time on his cell phone, the use these guys.... read more

Highly recommend (I wouldn't use anyone else). These guys take pride in their work, do not cut corners, work very fairly through unexpected issues, communicate well, move project along in timely fashion, leave you with a top-quality product, and the pricing for all that is very reasonable. They've done 2 projects for me: a 600 s.f. pool-house in Pleasant Hill in 2005, and a custom 5,200 s.f. home in Lafayette from 2013-2014. I never lost any sleep during the custom-home project worrying about the quality, getting ripped off on changes or side work for sub-contractors, corners being cut, etc. The framing (a lot of it complex) was done entirely by CBC. They even helped me out with some on-the-fly designing during the framing stage as they offered both standard and creative solutions. Their network of sub-contractors is solid, most were exceptional (you won't get better). I had CBC and every sub do some extra work for me, and all were reasonably priced so there's no gouging going on. You often hear about builds & remodels going bad because of the contractor. On my block, out of the last 4 construction projects, 2 of them were a nightmare for the owners. You won't get that from CBC, they just don't operate that way. read more

The Christiansen Brothers framed my dream home. It was 5500 square feet. I am a sub contractor and over 33 years I have dealt with hundreds of contractors. They were easy to deal with. They did a great job in a timely fashion. I was the general on my home. The county required several outside engineer inspectors. Everything was fine. They built a cabana for me later and that went just as well. I give them an A plus. read more

Josh and Jesse did the framing on our major remodel - the architect we worked with was a little skeptical I could handle being the general contractor on our own, but I was determined. We met with several so called framing contractors, and when I met Josh and Jesse - I knew they were the ones for the job. Their pricing was great, and they were willing to work with me. All through the process they offered their experience/expertise and contacts to help us get the job done. They were very patient and willing to work around our schedule. We're on our third project with Josh and Jesse - and if we find more to do, I'll certainly call these guys. Christensen Brothers are finishing up the rough framing for our addition and they did a great job. We are very satisfied. Their bid was competitive, they were able to start work as soon as we were ready for them and the framing was well reviewed by both the building inspector and my structural engineer. Their crew are friendly and respectful and I felt comfortable having them at the site with my family living in the house. Josh and Jesse are organized, professional and responsive. They run the business but work on site too so you aren't paying extra for management overhead. We would definitely work with them again! read more

We completed a major kitchen and master bath remodel of our home in first half of 2015 - finally getting around to writing this review :). Christensen Brothers Construction handled all the Civil and Structural work (foundations, framing and new window installations) - they did an excellent job, at a competitive price and were exceptionally professional - we will definitely use Christensen Brothers again on our next remodel or new construction. This review will be a bit longer than others - everything the other reviewers said is right on the mark. I will provide more detail, particularly for owner/builders who have limited remodel experience like us. Project background: we planned to use a General Contractor (already had an Architect, K. Price Design) and worked with the GC to plan out the job and provide a total cost estimate. When we received the estimate we decided we could save if we acted as owner GC. We did not make this decision lightly as the GC had a good reputation and relationships with various sub-contractors. We knew the success of our job was finding quality sub-contractors who could perform work that we did not have the skill for and can work well with other sub-contractors. Our remodel included removal of a load bearing wall in the kitchen and reinstalling another load bearing wall (to current code) on the opposite side of the room. The new design required installation of foundations, structural supports in the storage area and kitchen, and two 20 foot long x 14" tall glulam beams in our kitchen ceiling (opening up the kitchen to the den) - all robustly designed by an experienced structural engineer with background in earthquake design. We also had a significant master bath remodel - about 200 sq ft including replacement of two windows and movement of internal walls and door. We bid the job as lump sum (3 bidders) and Christensen Brothers was competitive - we selected them based on strong references and their honest & professional behavior throughout the bidding process. They exceeded our expectations in all phases of their work for us. Following are a few examples. Coordination with Others: Christensen Brothers first met with the Structural Engineer and Architect to make sure they understood the job and any inspection hold points. The experienced Structural Engineer wanted several hold points (site visits at $250 / hour) but after discussion with Jesse Christensen we decided this was excessive and not required - we relied on the Contra Costa County Inspector to verify the installation (saving us $$). Christensen Brothers worked exceptionally well with our electrician and plumber during demolition to minimize utility outages - I never had to referee any work coordination (it helped that these two crafts were time & materials). All of the inspections and permit sign-offs went smoothly. Safety: Christensen Brothers demonstrated safety throughout the project. One aspect I appreciated was they kept the job site clean throughout the day and a thorough clean-up at the end of each day - keeping the site clean minimizes accidental slips, trips and falls as well as tools that could fall and possibly injure someone. It also made my spouse happy as we lived in the house during the remodel. They had safety contingency plans which I believe makes Christensen Brothers really stand out. While lifting the 20 foot by 14" glulams into place, using manual lifts, one of the lifts failed, dropping the glulams. Christensen Brothers had built temporary supports throughout the lifting operations of these 2 - 400 pound beams in case they fell they would only drop 1-2 feet and avoid injuring anyone. When the equipment did fail it made a loud noise, but nothing else. They told me later it is rare the lifts fail but it has occurred in the past. This aspect of their work really stood out and reinforced how professional they are. Schedule: Christensen Brothers quoted a 4 - 6 week schedule and completed their portion of the remodel in 6 weeks, from start to finish. They were not there every day but made sure the work proceeded in coordination with the other subs. I had a tight schedule as I was going out of country for my job at the end of this 6 week period and wanted all the rough installation signed off by the county inspector before I left. Christensen Brothers came through on schedule including two change orders to resolve some exterior dry rot when replacing a window, and redoing a raised floor when we discovered a cabinet design error. Change orders can really drive the cost of a job up but Christensen Brothers completed the changes quickly and for minimal cost. If I could I would give Christensen Brothers SIX stars - as mentioned before I look forward to a future project where I work with them again. Josh and Jesse Christensen have worked on our house, on and off, for many years. They came to work for us when we needed framing work completed that another contractor had started. Often, a contractor doesn't want to take on a project that another contractor started in case there are problems that may have resulted from the original work. The Christensens came to our project, never worrying about who started the work, and completed it better than we could have ever anticipated. They were so helpful during the stressful time of transitioning from one contractor to another, and they were quick, efficient and very kind. Then, as we continued to remodel and add on to the house, they always came back to do whatever work we needed them to do, and as a result, a close bond between them and our family grew. However, had they not been as phenomenal at their craft as they were, we would not have had them back during the 10+ years we worked on our house. They are great guys, and they are gifted craftsmen. There is not another crew of framing contractors around who are better than the Christensen brothers. I would highly recommend them. read more
