I have also included an email dated Aug 20 from the project manager confirming the project was "on track for completion in 3-4 months." The project ultimately took around 6 months to complete. Additionally, the electrical work referenced in their response included an EV circuit, which is typically required for new construction and ADU projects under the 2022 California Electrical Code. This is a standard code requirement rather than a discretionary upgrade. These screenshots provide context for my experience during the project. Throughout the build I frequently had to verify measurements, coordinate ordering timelines, and raise planning questions that would normally fall under project management. The on-site crew worked hard and treated the property respectfully, and I appreciate their effort. We appreciated his laidback attitude while also being upfront with his projected costs and schedule. We trusted Brannan to carry out our vision of the projects within our budget and he delivered 100%. The results are beautiful. Two different bathrooms, each dramatically improved from what was there before while displaying our personal taste and adding some character to our home. We really love how much we were able to drive the design of the bathrooms with Brannan's guidance on the different tradeoffs of options for each decision. Oops sorry!] I was putting my home up for sale and needed a few small repairs before the home inspection. Well, I totally got my dates mixed up and it turned out that I only had two days to make these fixes (otherwise they'd be marked on the inspection report, which we didn't want! I ended up calling Diablo Valley handyman as they were recommended to me by a neighbor. I called first thing in the morning, and I believe I spoke with the actual owner (James.) I told him my situation and even though it sounded like he had a pretty full schedule, he was able to have somebody up the very next day to not only assess everything, but actually make the repairs! We needed to have a fence repaired , a new staircase hand-railing put up, some minor trim fixes around our windows. And then quite a few window screens needed replacing. (We have cats, lol) The fact that they were able to come out on such short notice, make all the repairs in one day, plus the guys that showed up to do the work were warm and friendly! After all of this, I absolutely expected to pay a high premium, however, the invoice came back for a more than reasonable amount! (It was a bit higher than the original estimate over the phone, but that was our fault because we forgot to tell them about the window screens!) Getting ready to sell a house is maddening and so stressful. Do Diablo Valley handyman was one of the only aspects that put us at ease during this entire process! Unfortunately, we moved quite a bit further away so we fall out of these guys' service zone now, but that's part of the reason why I wanted to make sure I wrote this review.... because I never forgot the awesome service we received!

I liked them the best out of all the contractors/handymen I talked to and felt they were very reasonable for cost and schedule. My project consisted of new stucco, trim, framing, and painting for my garage; and drywall and baseboard work inside. Mark and Alvaro completed the work and did a fantastic job. Mark kept me informed with all the progress each day, and his attention to detail ensured that everything ended up looking great. Overall, I had a really good experience with them and will plan to contact them again for any future projects.

In late 2024, my husband and I met with Reggie Keding to see if New Key would be a good fit for a major renovation on a 1950s ranch-style home we had just purchased in Pleasant Hill. We loved the idea of working with a local contractor and were initially impressed by Reggie's communication, professionalism, and assurance that he could accomplish everything we wanted within our substantial 6-figure budget (with mid-range fixtures and finishes, which we agreed to). We signed a schematic design agreement, writing a 5-figure check and trusting that they'd deliver on those expectations. We had an initial walkthrough with Maya, New Key's designer, and were excited about her ideas. Reggie encouraged us to "dream big" and share inspiration. However, the vast majority of our emails to Maya went unanswered, and there was very little collaboration or back-and-forth during the design process. After raising concerns, we were shown interim designs that were largely based on our own ideas and didn't add much new direction. A few weeks later, we had our formal design presentation and were beyond disappointed. All three options ("good, better, best") felt underdeveloped and missed key priorities. For example, two versions did not include vaulted ceilings in the main living space (which we had clearly identified as a must), and even the top-tier design featured a very small kitchen window despite the home's natural light and backyard views. Some design choices also introduced significant added cost without clear benefit, such as removing a load-bearing wall where simpler alternatives seemed possible. But the kicker was the price to build New Key's designs: even the cheapest "good" design came with a price tag of $1.2 million to build, pretty much doubling our budget and definitely overvaluing for our PH neighborhood. At that point, we lost confidence and decided to part ways after the initial design phase. While Reggie remained professional in tone, we did not feel the process or pricing aligned with what had been communicated at the outset. We lost a 5-figure design fee and about 3 months in the process, having to start over with a new architect and builder. Now, a year later, I'm writing this from our fully remodeled home, which includes everything on our original wish list. After starting over with a new team, we were able to complete the project close to our original budget--nowhere near the $1.2M estimate we were given. Losing the time and design fee was painful, but in hindsight, it was better than continuing down the wrong path. I would strongly recommend that anyone considering New Key get clear, detailed pricing expectations early and proceed carefully.

You can feel the quality when you walk around; there is a meticulousness to the work that is hard to find anywhere else. - Project Planning - We were assigned a project manager and a foreman who kept us updated very frequently on the state of construction. The work was completed on-time if you account for the realities of construction which were largely due to supply delays and/or the occasional coordinate of some competing work. To convert a workshop (where we literally stripped it down) to a livable, high-quality ADU in 5 months is impressive! Also, they showed up on-time every day and if they were going to be late (or not come), we would be told. - Culture - Everyone that works at New Key Construction was a pleasure to work with; they hire people who care about the work they are doing and make an effort to get to know you. We could tell the employees enjoyed working at New Key, and it shows in the work. We looked at several companies before choosing New Key. I wholeheartedly will say it was worth it - you get quality work, quality communication, a 10-year warranty, and people who legitimately care about you and your home. You won't regret it!

Hansen's Pride Construction & Renovation (HPCR) has given us excellent work on home improvement…read moreprojects. We've done two HI projects with HPCR: the first was a front door replacement project (2 days - replace french doors with a Jeldwen oversize pre-hung door system); the second was a remodel of our upstairs bedrooms, guest bathroom and mezzanine (1 month - carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting). Our experiences on these projects have made us big fans of HPCR. The proprietor is an extremely conscientious builder. On both our projects, he listened carefully to what we wanted, prepared a careful proposal for the work we requested and then delivered on time and on budget. In the case of the upstairs remodel, he was working against a very tight time frame (30 days). On both projects, HPCR delivered beautiful results and at very reasonable cost. From our experiences with other contractors on other home improvement projects, gathering competing bids on the projects we did with HPCR, and our own experience on DIY projects, we feel like we got our money's worth. Another thing we like about HPCR is that the proprietor really sweats the details. For example, he made his team park the construction trailers on my driveway (parking on the street would have annoyed my neighbors), updated me every day on project progress, and always cleaned up at the end of every day. I've worked with contractors who don't do this. On top of that, he's very pleasant to work with. He was also very polite and very respectful of our time (showed up for meetings on time, came prepared). Based on our own very positive experiences with HPCR, we have recommended HPCR to friends and family in the past and we expect to be able to continue to do so in the future.
