Green sequoia caused a disaster with my backyard. Sad part is that we had great experiences with them before and chose them because of that. If you are doing an outside project, don't pick green sequoia as this seems to be a trend (see Jonathan's review from July 2019). They kept demo'ing after finding an issue, making it worse, and then they left us hanging for a month until they were finally removed from the job. Overall, Green Sequoia did more harm than good on this. Not sure new management is working out. Full story: Green Sequoia previously did our bathroom and did a great job. Jessie and Victoria also did our closet. Love those two. We saw an opportunity to improve our backyard living space by removing unnecessary planters and retaining walls. We had two quotes and went with Green Sequoia, the more expensive one, because of the previous relationship. They didn't tell us that they didn't have exterior expertise and the person on the job wasn't a normal part of the crew but instead a subcontractor. When construction started, we knew there was a question if a retaining wall was supporting or redundant. As soon as the project started, removing a small part of that wall would have made it quickly clear it was supportive as the wall behind ended 8 inches from the top. That's when they should have stopped. They didn't. They dropped the whole wall and then only contacted me after. This caused increased cost and a safety risk for both me and my neighbor. The same occurred in another part of the property. Oversight of the subcontractor was clearly poor. Construction was halted a week after starting in early June because of these errors. Afterwards, Green Sequoia sat on it for a month without getting me change orders or a clear plan to fix it despite nearly daily questions and pings from me. I gave them an ultimatum on July 6th to have a plan by end of week or I would remove them from the job and seek a refund. Four days later they were off the job. No refund yet despite 5 follow up notes from me - but complaint filed with state license board. This project will cost me $20k more, with less improvements made, because of what it will take to repair their damages. The project was supposed to be 3 weeks. Currently it's looking like 3 months because I've had to remove Green Sequoia from the job and get a new contractor. Issues come up with old properties. When starting our plan I fully expected that there may be some small unexpected cost. My issue with Green Sequoia was the lack of oversight, the recklessness that caused increased damage, and the abandonment of the project. Two stars because through this disaster Kirk was still responsive. While I don't agree with their lack of ownership about their actions, I appreciate that communication lines stayed open and that he visited to do some bracing upon my request. read more

I've never left a bad review before but this company "redid" the outside of our house that was old and falling apart. They did a horrible job- left rotting wood on the exterior, added new siding that is splitting and uneven. Fairly certain we still have several leaks- thank goodness it hasn't rained much for the sake of our house. I look at the mess they made every day and am horrified. I recently began a kitchen remodel project. I was contacted by Green Sequoia via Buildzoom. I live in a high-rise condo, and the term "high-rise condo" scares away a lot of contractors who then opine about how much more expensive it will be because of things like the hassle of dealing with daily debris haul-away and dealing with HOA, etc etc. Green Sequoia was not deterred at all, they have significant experience with high-rises and were one of the first to come out and take a look at my project. At the time I was clearly a noob -- my family has done major remodels and even building a house from scratch, but I have no personal experience with major remodels where I actually do the interviewing and decision-making. Larry came out and he was the nicest and kindest contractor I have ever met, even compared with all the ones I interviewed afterwards. Actually, I'd say he is probably one of the nicest people in the world. He patiently explained a lot of things to me that came in really handy as I interviewed more contractors after him. I really liked him a lot and felt at ease with this project. I received a very detailed and thorough quote and it was in line with and reasonable compared to others I received. Ultimately, I realized I needed more design help and more custom sourcing materials than they could provide (the reason being that our non-negotiable was to have bamboo cabinets, and this is quite rare, and I didn't want to go with the prefab cabinets at Sincere Home Decor, though they do get a contractor's discount there), so I went with another company who had vendors with the materials I liked. In the end, Green Sequoia was in my top 3 bids and I would have gone with them if it wasn't for this materials issue. I have 100% confidence that my family would love their work, and I would wholeheartedly recommend them to any of my neighbors and friends who are looking to get some work done, especially if you live in a high-rise condo. read more

Gather round, Yelpers and I'll tell you the tale of 3 consultations. As new homeowners we struggle to navigate the ins and outs of maintaining our new abode (she's temperamental and needy). We have this odd problem where our house is noticeably humid and we've gotten a slew of advice (some solicited some not) on what to do. I, of course, turned to Yelp for help after resonating most with the suggestion to put a moisture barrier under the house. I reached out to 3 contractors: 1) was wishy washy and we're still playing phone tag (after a month: now I'm just in it for sport) 2) came, assessed, and despite my strong inclination that he had no idea what he was talking about insisted I implement a drainage system and quoted me at $23,000. 3) enter sequoia left stage riding into my housing crisis on a white horse. What initially distinguished sequoia is their customer service and professional organization around diagnosing the problem. They are super prompt, courteous, always follow through, and when the woman I spoke to wasn't sure of something she was transparent and investigated before giving me an accurate response. I so appreciate that thoroughness and transparency. Their appointment service is also tech savvy and I received a text message reminding me of the appointment (also super appreciate since I have two little ones and zero memory left). Justin came promptly for our appointment, took his time to assess the issue and told us we didn't need an expensive fix, we just needed to remove some plywood from our crawl space that was inhibiting ventilation. Is your jaw dropped? Mine still is. Instead of lying or taking advantage of our ignorance (which he easily could have done) he was genuinely invested in us fixing the problem instead of profiting. Refreshing. I will never search for another contractor for my housing maintenance or upgrades. Sequoia has secured its place as our forever-trusted contractor. Thank you Justin!!! read more

We had very high hopes for Green Sequoia assisting us with the phased remodel of our home, beginning with installation of a backyard flagstone paver patio and bathroom remodel, followed by kitchen remodel and exterior remodel (re-shake and metal roof installation). The patio and bathroom projects were to be undertaken simultaneously, but, luckily, delays in getting the bathroom design completed required splitting the projects under 2 contracts. The patio project remains incomplete and has the quality of a bad DIY project (i.e., we are convinced that we could have done an equal or better job, likely the latter). We requested paver borders in addition to the main flagstone-type pavers and relayed the style and color choices to our PM Justin several times as we were told that demolition could not be scheduled until we selected them. Imagine our surprise when the demo team showed up a day after the scheduled demo day (missed the day completely with no notice at all after we stayed home to work and cleared morning schedules to prep for arrival) asking what pavers we wanted so they could order them. We again relayed our choices and reserved our consternation. Were told several days later the borders we wanted could only be ordered by full pallet so had to choose another, which we did. A week later (note we were told demo to completion would be 3 days and this was already several weeks past the contractual substantial completion date), the crew showed up and the "border" stones were the wrong color and were square, rather than the rectangular curb style borders we chose the second time around. Wanting to finally use our backyard for summer, we agreed to ditch the stones so long as the patio would be cut to have straight borders. Aside from having crooked borders and extremely bad concrete work, the initial sand used to bind the pavers did not set, blowing everywhere at the slightest wind and getting over everything inside and out. Damage was also done to our retaining wall during demolition (hole knocked in the concrete in one section, steel support beam knocked lose from concrete and bent in another location), which was "patched" in an unsightly and haphazard manner. We know question the integrity of the retaining wall. Steps outlined on Belgard website and in their installation videos for paver installation were not followed; notably the multi-step compaction and polymeric sand setting process steps. During this whole process, no on-site management from Justin, miscommunication on pavers he said he would order and that had to be ordered before demo, and no notice in advance of no-shows/late arrivals. He popped up after an e-mail in to them and owner of GS then came feigned anger over shoddy workmanship and promised fix based on punch list I sent (including straightening edges, removing remainder of debris left from demo and installation, and replacement of sand with polymeric setting sand to bond pavers. Guys came today and at least handled sand only, but there will be a good deal of polymer residue on the pavers that they "hope" will go away with time/use, but noted it is good for "traction when you have guests over." Calling it quits and will handle the other items ourselves. One star as a default setting, one for the attempt, half-hearted as it was, to fix. Bottom line is that this project was riddled with uncommunicated and unnecessary delays, complete lack of oversight of unskilled labor, a complete absence of attention to detail and care to have the project look professionally done and remotely aesthetically pleasing, and unexplained miscommunications/misrepresentations. Great choice if you are looking to try out being a construction foreman/project manager, otherwise, Caveat emptor. read more

We had Green Sequoia remodel our kitchen and it looks amazing. The project was largely completed on time and with great quality and work. The team was very good about communicating their progress and keeping us involved in some important decisions. While not 100% what we want it's very very close and if we had communicated well enough upfront or went with some custom items we could've gotten that. As with any large project or working with contractors, please make sure all scope of work that you expect is clear up front as changes later will result in change orders. And be very specific. Do not use!! Will try to be brief despite the fact that our entire renovation project is being delayed thanks to yet another mistake that was made by Green Sequoia (whom failed to let us know an asbestos check was part of the process). We used them for plans in a 3rd story split level addition (bed/bath/office) that turned into a home renovation since the entire first floor also changing (walls knocked down, extended kitchen, etc.). It took 11 months just for plans to happen and be approved - at every step of the way we repeatedly complained about the poor service from the engineer. Plans started in April 2018 and our first letter was sent in June. Another in July and another in August. By then we didn't have the time to deal with a small claims or civil suit or believe me, I would have sued for breach of contract. Despite email after email showing the problems were not us or the city, they would blame the city. There were delays and delays for no reason before things were even submitted to the city. Then even after a city planner was involved there were repeated issues of the assigned engineer simply not doing his job. He would ignore comments from the city, tell us he sent things he didn't, say that he had done things he didn't. We contacted Idan and Kirk repeatedly and aside from occasional lip service, they did nothing. Very unprofessional and unhelpful. Kirk is a very nice guy, don't get me wrong, but the entire process was a mess and should not have lasted that long. Additionally, I was always handled differently than my husband and written condescendingly toward. It got to the point I would draft the email and we'd send through my husband's email so they would react more professionally and magically once in a while they'd do what should have already been done. We even started speaking to the city directly at one point because Green Sequoia's delays were simply inexcusable. The city planner also shared our frustration as they also complained. We asked for someone with Alameda experience as everyone knows Alameda has complicated permitting process, but what we got was repeated subpar work. We would rush our decisions to make sure the delay was never on our end and no city delay was any longer than normal timing. 11 months was ridiculous and affected our entire process, delaying the build out. And here we are thinking we had moved on only to hear that Green Sequoia did not adequately give us basic information, which has stalled our renovation. In the end they conceded there were issues and gave us a 5% discount, but it's peanuts compared to the mess it was and caused and the amount of time we had to spend asking them to do their job. Eran, who was our project manager, met with us on the original site walk and from our first meeting with him you could see he was a professional that really understood how to keep projects. The contract was labor and rough materials so he kept on his to have all materials ready for installation.As with any construction project there were unforeseen issues that came up and we felt they were all fairly priced. Eran utilized both his go to subcontractors and labor at Green Sequoia to complete the project. All were professional, flexible with the working environment and attentive to the project. The service I've received from Green Sequoia has been shockingly awful. We hired them to draft plans for an addition back in April of 2018 with "substantial completion" by June of 2018. Green Sequoia gave us an engineer who also drafts plans. Throughout the process the drafter, Luis, delayed the process countless times by making careless errors and not meeting deadlines. In email exchanges, he would miss requested changes to plans, and other times he would make changes that I specifically said not to. For instance, I made it clear that we wanted to leave our oven where it was, but he moved it across the kitchen anyway. We told him we wanted our kitchen wall to remain separating the dining room, but he took it out anyway. We told him to rename a "closet" to be a "reading nook" (a city requirement), but instead entirely removed that space from the plans. His assertions that he would submit plans to the city by a certain date were very often not met, and when dropped off days later involved him rushing into the office at the last minute before the day's closing. One such instance indicative of exchanges with Luis, was an email exchange between the city planner and Luis that I was cc'd on: Luis told the city planner: "I sent you that info after we met yesterday." To which the city planner responded: "I still have not received." This happened on several occasions, when Luis claimed that he sent items that were not received. This is certainly not good for our relationship to the city for this project. We expressed formal complaints directly to the owner, Idan, and all involved as early as June, but nothing improved. When we finally got the design approved, it was after a very stressful seven months of dealing with Luis's mistakes, omissions, and delays. Design Review is only the first step, however. Luis, being an engineer, was also in charge of part 2, the structural plans. Design Plans were approved 12/6/2018 and Luis submitted the structural plans 1/7/19. A month's time, not bad. But the city responded with 40 notes and Luis's response to those 40 notes (submitted 2/7/19) had many issues including the fact that he completely neglected to submit a form that was specified to submit. Also, multiple items were left "unresolved" because he did not respond to them adequately or at all. This is indicative of the work he's produced for us that has made this process drag on, and on. At first, Green Sequoia did not want to take responsibility for Luis's shortcomings, and chose to blame the city for the delays. Alameda is notoriously nit-picky, but they were not responsible for causing the plans to take seven months - that was overwhelming due to Luis's delays. It's only that this process is approaching the symbolic 1-year mark without being completed that I think they are actually starting to take notice that something is wrong. Luis is not doing his job. That fact can't be ignored anymore. However, I asked the owner, Idan, if he had another in-house engineer that could finish out the structural plans for us, but he does not have another engineer available. So it seems we're stuck with Luis. It's been three months now that he's been working on the structural plans with no end in sight. I will update this review if and when the plans get stamped by the city. You may wonder why we don't just let Green Sequoia go, and hire another company/engineer to finish the job? Each complaint came with apologies and promises, to appease us and string us along, but no real improvements and the project is still ongoing, totally in Luis's court. Kirk, our project manager, has been professional throughout. Otherwise, it has been an absolute nightmare. I know this is a strong word, but the incompetence in the work, and lack of commitment to resolving our project has made for quite literally the most stressful, unprofessional experience I've had with any professional service provider, ever. And on a side note, I don't like to write bad reviews. I checked, and of my 25 yelp reviews, 23 are 5-star reviews, but this has been so incomprehensibly awful, and something I feel people looking into this company should be aware of. read more

Not every thing run smoothly I must say, but they were always there to solve any issue and to answer any question. our house looks amazing and we very pleased with the work done . Three full-sized windows needed replacing on the third floor of my house. Idan and Kirk understood exactly what I wanted and what needed to be done and they made it happen without trying to coax me into any costly changes or extras, and extra care was taken to provide protection from the dry-rot recurring.
