Chris Taverna is a family-owned Greek & Mediterranean restaurant in South Florida that has been in operation since 2004. It was founded by owner Christos "Chris" Charoudis, the restaurant's menu is largely inspired by traditional family recipes. Chris's mother, Eleni, personally quality-controlled the dishes to ensure authenticity. This is the original restaurant, at the corner of Lantana Rd. & Jog, a second is on Congress, They have expanded & during covid outdoor dining in the parking lot was created. There is a free parking in front along with a steady stream of pick up traffic. The menu offers extensive Greek dishes with servers being very quick & efficient. Portions at Chris' Taverna are enormous. One plate is enough for more than enough for 2 of us to share. The restaurant is casual, reservations are not accepted, it's first come & first serve. Tonight six of us met here for dinner. We arrived before 6:00 and waited only a few minutes for a table. When we left there was a line outside. When we were seated we were given water & a garlic spread with warm fresh pita. We all shared babaganosh & generous delicious dips. My husband & I shared a gyro salad with lots of grilled lamb, more than enough for us both. Others enjoyed greek chicken salad, shrimp with pasta, and spanakopita. This place has 4.6 stars. Four point six!!! I had to double-check I wasn't looking at the wrong restaurant, or maybe Yelp accidentally merged it with a taverna in Santorini. As a Greek (and former chef), I was genuinely excited after about ten people insisted this was "the spot" when I moved to Delray Beach. So naturally, I came in expecting something remotely...Greek. Quick reality check for fellow reviewers: 1.Have you ever actually been to Greece? Not the airport. Not a cruise stop. I mean eaten real Greek food. 2.Do we all agree on what goes into a Greek salad and a proper gyro, or are we just improvising at this point? Because what I saw felt more like a creative writing exercise than a recipe. 3.If your rating is based on portion size, then yes, congratulations, you got a lot of food. But let's not confuse quantity with authenticity (or quality). That's how we end up with 4.6 stars. I won't even get into presentation, because that would require there being something recognizable to present. This place would have been closed in a week in NYC! We ordered take out from the Lantana location of Chris' Taverna for a pool day lunch, and it was the best decision . Totally hit the spot. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and super satisfying without feeling too heavy. First of all, the portions were HUGE. There was so much food. It was perfect to order a couple dishes to share between us. But the real star of the show was the tzatziki. Phenomenal. I genuinely wanted to eat it with a spoon. Creamy, garlicky, perfectly balanced 10/10. The salad was just what I wanted after sitting in the sun all morning. Crisp, refreshing , and not an afterthought like it can be at some places. Every bite felt fresh and well-seasoned. To be honest, I did use the tzatziki and salad dressing instead of the provided salad dressing. And the gyro wrap with garlic fries? Easily one of the best gyros I've had in a while. The meat was flavorful and tender, the wrap was perfectly put together, and those garlic fries were the ideal salty, crispy side. Best Greek food! Warmly greeted by George. Ordered the appetizer spanakopita. Excellent and big enough to be an entree. Wife got the souvlaki and I got the gyro. Both of us got the side Greek salad that was included. The side salad was much larger than I expected. The ingredients were all in the right proportions. The gyro and souvlaki were excellent. My parents and grandparents love coming here for the quality of food and good prices. The favs are the gyro and the lamb chops. The lamp chops are huge, lots of meat and they give you 5 of them. Seasonings were perfect, one was a little too salty but overall cooked to perfection. I love the side of the lemony potatoes and a salad. For two sides and the meal of lamb chops for $38 you can't beat that for the portion and quality. I split the meal with my grandma and I saw other people splitting meals as well. No splitting charge! And no charge for using a credit card. The gyro platter and gyro sandwich are huge and the meat is succulent. You can see them carving it off the spits in the front. On a Saturday night at 6:30 the place was packed but we only waited 10 min to sit inside when we were told 20. They are very quick but they don't rush you out. Service is excellent and attentive. It's loud if seated inside. My grandma had a tough time hearing me. Even if you are not a Greek food fan like me I recommend to try this place. I don't usually like tzatziki sauce or feta but I like them both here! They also give you complimentary pita. read more

Stopped in for a quick take-out; got my favorite Shrimp Wrap with no onions, and a side of Greek potatoes. I had forgotten how delicious the potatoes are! This is by far one of the best Greek restaurants I've been to down in Florida. The flaming saganaki is delicious. The gyro meat was tender and juicy. The service was excellent, the waiters continued to check on us and everything came out quickly. The restaurant is a nice quaint place in a shopping plaza, but you're greeted by the classic Athenian style and colors. Definitely recommend for anyone who wants some authentic Greek food. read more

Upon seating, the server promptly gave us a plate of warm, fresh pita bread and a house-made tahini for dipping. Great way to start dinner! For my dinner, I had the chicken caesar salad wrap with french fries. It was delicious, and I could barely finish it because it was so large. My wife had the chicken santorini, which had been recommended by a friend. It consisted of grilled chicken with sauteed tomatoes, feta cheese, onions and rice. The proportion of chicken to the other ingredients was a bit light, but the flavors were good, and she'd pass along the recommendation to others. Note: a shrimp version of this dish is also available. For her side dish, my wife had hummus. It was a good-sized portion and had a pleasant taste although it was a little thinner than she had expected. Our friends had the pastitsio, which is essentially a Greek version of lasagna, with layers of macaroni and ground beef. Very dense and delicious. They had plenty of leftovers. The atmosphere is okay but a bit dated, as the walls were filled with photographic murals of Greek cities. The overhead fluorescent lighting was a little harsh. We certainly had no trouble seeing our food. Overall, we had a pleasant dining experience and will be back sooner rather than later. read more

We were camping in Lake Worth and looking for a nice place to have dinner. So after I went to Publix, we passed Chris's Taverna in the same shopping Center. We walked in and it reminded me of a Pizza Place in Brooklyn! There were many people cooking and just a few patrons. Within an hour the place was bustling inside and out, George was our waiter extraordinaire! He was so happy and so polite he made me smile. I was ready for him to skip and get our food. We all ordered different items but received pita bread and tzatziki before our meal started. I got the gyro and a side greek salad, my sister in law the grilled chicken and David got the best. A trio of three homemade Greek dishes, spanakopita, moussaka and pastitsio. I probably ate half of his and brought most of mine home! By the time we left, every table was full inside and out. I was very disappointed with the $28 grilled chicken platter. The food itself was average at best, nothing memorable and certainly not worth the price. The hummus was watery and completely lacking in flavor. The Greek salad was the strongest side dish, but it was simply lettuce, a bit of cheese, and dressing, not exactly a culinary achievement, and again, not worth $28. When I first approached the counter, I asked for a menu since it was my first time there. Instead of offering any guidance, the cashier asked for my name and immediately pressed me for an order. When I repeated that I needed a menu, he reluctantly handed one over but seemed irritated that I wasn't ready to order. I felt I was clear that I had never been there before, but that didn't seem to register with him. The restaurant itself is a hole in the wall, which can often be charming when the food is exceptional. In this case, however, the quality didn't measure up, leaving the atmosphere feeling more like an unremarkable strip mall spot than a hidden gem. I regret spending so much for so little. I've never been to Greece, but I have been to Istanbul, so I know what truly great grilled chicken and hummus should taste like, and this was nowhere near it. At best, this meal should have been $15. I was here for lunch and ordered off of their lunch menu. They have a large selection to choose from, and they all include a Greek salad or French fries, pita with tzatziki sauce, and a soda. It's a lot of food for not a lot of money. Most importantly, the food is fresh and delicious. The Mousaka was excellent. Layers of eggplant, ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and topped with a creamy bechamel sauce. The portion was large enough that I had enough leftover for dinner. Instead of fries, I had the Greek salad. They left off the stuffed grape leave and gave me a few extra olives. My salad was very good and it was pretty big for a side salad so I couldn't finish it. The warm pita bread is good, but their tzatziki is simply amazing. They use a lot of garlic, and honestly, they make the best tzatziki sauce I have ever had. Period. This is a casual restaurant with no ambiance, and they do a lot of take-out. The dining room is simple, but it's clean. My server was friendly and attentive, and he was around if I needed anything. He even hooked me up with extra olives. Best lunch I have had in a while. I had delicious food, with great service, and enough leftover for dinner. As far as the food is concerned, I give it a zero shame on you as a Greek. I know my food and the food was horrible. You need to get some good Greek cooks in there as you used to...
