I came here based on the two glowing reviews -- I'd previously been going to Royal White on the other side of the 'ville, which offers cheap, somewhat industrial dry cleaning services. Chris Fine is the total opposite - nice, wise-seeming old Asian owners in a tiny, tiny shop. Instead of entering your info into a computer system or even taking your phone number or name, the guy just gives you a slip with a number -- I was skeptical, since 9 times out of 10 at a big dry cleaners I lose/forget my slip. I managed to hold onto it, though, and was rewarded with some excellent dry cleaning -- Chris Fine got out blood, sweat, and wine stains much better than Royal White did (really, don't worry about what I do while wearing dress shirts) and turned my dropoff around just as quickly. Not quite as cheap and paper-only accounting takes it down to 4 stars from 5, but it'll definitely be my new local go-to dry cleaning place. read more

Tailoring work: 10 stars! Work management system: between 3-4 stars. The couple who owns this place is a fantastic tailoring team. I was searching for years, literally, for a tailor who I could trust to do great work at reasonable prices. I've had a lot of clothes ruined by crappy tailors. The fellow has been tailoring for over 50 years (I kid you not!) and has such an excellent understanding of fabric, drape, shape. This compares to other local tailors who have 5-10 years experience. His eye for style and fit is complemented by his wife's perspective- if you get something tailored, make sure both are there to give input. The only catch is that about 10% of the time an alteration may not be ready at the agreed upon date. Plan accordingly- it's worth it. I'd been "saving up" my clothes that need alterations for years before finding this team, and have now spent at least $350 on over 25 pieces in the past year. Every penny was worth it- now my clothes fit brilliantly!!! read more

This guy Moses does a horrible job- he had one dress of mine for a week and a half and I came to get it and the sleeve fell off when I picked it up. Then he went to fix it again and I came back and it had a hole in it. He then got angry when I asked for my money back. It was extremely unprofessional. I do NOT recommend him for alterations!!!! read more

I used this place for it's convenience, i used to work next door I have given them multiple chances and now giving up and using Hawk across the street until they let me down. 1st incident, I took my future brother in law to get a suit tailored here, for HIS FATHERS WEDDING! We were told to come back to pick it up a week later, after explaining that the wedding was that same day and it needed to be fully ready, they assured me it would be ready. Morning of the wedding, we get there and the suits in perfect shape, but the shirt was given to another customer which they didn't have a phone number to reach..Day of the wedding we had to go buy a new shirt, have it pressed and although they reimbursed us and did not charge for the pressing of the original shirt or new shirt.. , it was a huge hassle and I had to negotiate these costs! 2nd incident... I brought a silk scarf which I wear in my hair, for a cleaning as it had some hair gel on it.. pick up the scarf almost a week later and it's wrinkled and gel still on it, I didn't notice until I got home, where I got back in my car and went back to Chris Fine showing them the problem and refused their offer to a free - "re"wash, and demanded my money back.. I did have many positive experiences with them in the mean time, but have given up faith completely. read more

I dropped off two pairs of jeans to be hemmed, after doing the same a year prior, with good service. I was notified they are under new ownership. $20 per pants for original hem. Unfortunately, I had to return 5 times to get my pants. Once to pick up one pair, and four more times to pick up the second. AND, that doesn't count the two messages I received saying they would be delayed another day. Also, the phone number on this yelp page is not current, so don't bother calling. read more

I had one pair of jeans hemmed ($10), one button on my jeans replaced($10), and a crappy H&M dress tailored to not drape weirdly on my body ($17). Everything looks incredible. I keep looking at the new hem to make sure I didn't dream the whole thing because it looks THAT good! The dress fits much better now, quite a feat considering the crappy material it's made of. And the woman found a button that matches the color of other metal bits on the jeans perfectly. The couple is very sweet, and are clearly pros. I will definitely bring more clothes back to them! read more

I just moved to the area, and I needed to get some pants hemmed and tapered before winter. Coming from Texas, tailoring could be fairly cheap when I found the right place, and I was a little afraid of how expensive it was going to be up here. When I arrived, they ushered me into a little fitting room, and then the woman (there's one man and one women - a husband and wife?) adjusted my pants and asked me questions. Even though there was a littttttle bit of a language barrier, she totally understood the very particular directions I gave her. Not only that, but they let me pick up the two pairs of pants TWO DAYS LATER (I'm used to waiting like a week!), AND it was $20/pair - which was great. On top of that, they were tailored JUST as I wanted them to be. These people are my go-to tailors, now and for the rest of my time in Somerville. p.s. The tailoring here is fine, but their dry cleaning service ruined an expensive wool hat and expensive wool sweater. They refused to compensate in any way. They said the sweater was 35 years old (it isn't) and the hat fit fine after dry cleaning (it didn't). I've never bothered to write a yelp review before. Don't take your dry cleaning here. read more

I have used this shop a few times for alterations and they have always been quick and did a nice job. Today, I tried to drop off two pairs of pants that needed to be hemmed. When I told this to the young man at the front, he handed me a dry cleaning slip. When I told him again that I wanted them hemmed, he was completely baffled. After trying to explain this (simple) request for a few minutes, I finally asked if I could speak to the other man that worked there (an older gentleman who had always helped me before). The man I was dealing with would not ask for help. I gave up and left, pants in hand. I won't be going back. read more

Went in to get measurements taken to get a dress custom made on etsy, and planned to bring it back for alterations. I won't be returning, however, because when I was finished and about to leave, I asked about a price guide for their alteration services. The owner opportunistically announced a $10 surcharge for the measurements. I was a bit surprised because no one charges for measurements. However, I paid, left, and decided if that's how they roll then they won't be gaining my business in the future. read more

DO. NOT. BOTHER. It pains me to leave such a bad review because this place actually used to be my "go to" for alterations and dry cleaning. Back when I patronized Chris Fine, it was an older Asian couple that ran the place. Aside from a few language barriers issues, we had a great relationship and they did a TON of work for me over the years. Fast forward to 2019 and apparently, someone else is in charge over there. The quality is GONE. I brought two camisoles with fraying hemlines that needed repair and a pair of old jeans that needed patching. It was a Tuesday and I was told my clothes would be ready Friday of the same week. When I showed up on Friday, the guy had apparently "forgotten" and looked at me awkwardly but didn't apologize! I wasn't able to make it back until the following Thursday but when I arrived (an hour before the advertised closing time), the shop was dark and locked! No way to call in advance either as the advertised number is a non-working one. Gimme a break! When I FINALLY had my husband gather my hostage clothing (I paid upon drop off, mind you), the quality was..... meh on the camisoles but total crap on the jeans! I should've taken a picture - a high school kid in home ec could've done a better job! The guy used a huge denim flap on the back of the knee and accidentally folded the edge over and sewed that into place! He used a weird blue color thread that did NOT blend into the surrounding denim at all and - best part? - he left a large straight pin stuck in the side that I discovered AFTER trying them on at home!!! Said jeans are actually at a new tailor at the moment, being fixed. Unacceptable all around. Save your money and save yourself the hassle - stay away. read more

I am very impressed with the quality of work from this tailor. As other reviewers have noted, it appears that just a man and his wife work here. The shop is quaint and not much to look at, but the quality of work speaks volumes. I brought three pairs of jeans in - I thought two of them were beyond saving due to excessive wear between the thighs, and the other needed a hem. The jeans were repaired beyond my expectations - you can hardly tell they were worn through and the patch is not overly stiff, as I have experienced in the past with other tailors. The tailor truly rescued my jeans from the trash can. The hem is beautiful - straight across with the right color thread to match the original, and at just the right length. I give this tailor a wholehearted recommendation! read more

Be cautious...they have a new owner and they speak very little English and seem to be getting orders wrong recently. I asked for a button to be fixed and instead they sent it to be dry cleaned. Another man in front of me was complaining because the pants that he dropped off to be tailored were lost. The new owner is very nice but they need a better system. read more

I've tried out the tailoring here in the past, and today I really gave them a challenge with a tear in my favorite shirt. In a word: perfect. Their seamstress made a perfect mend, barely even visible. The craftsmanship here is impeccable and I can't recommend them highly enough. I have had several items repaired by them. They are friendly enough but aren't overly welcoming. Don't go to them to do anything even semi-elaborate that needs any creative thinking. I asked about replacing some broken zipper pulls on a jacket. They didn't have anything similar to use (which is fine) but weren't able to offer suggestions or point me where to look to buy some. Another place I went to was easily able to help. Repaired some jeans but left a few inches of the thread they used sticking out of the repair area. Had to cut it off myself. Other repairs were acceptable. Price seemed okay. Cash only. read more

I brought 2 pairs of jeans here to get patched- the man who helped me was unfriendly and told me that EACH pair would cost $20 for a simple patch. I opted to get just one patched and see how it turned out. Unfortunately, I still do not know because it's been a week and the patch isn't ready yet. Unless I receive the pants in better condition than how I originally purchased them, I'm not paying the full $20. read more

The service was fantastic. I had a sport coat altered and it could not have been done any better than they did. I love this place. Small, friendly, and extremely competent. They have a little changing room with a curtain. I brought a dress here to be shortened before a wedding. Despite pinning it AND wearing shoes that were higher than I intended to wear to the wedding in order to ensure the dress was floor length, he cut the dress way too short, rendering it unwearable at an awkward ankle length. They then insisted they could let it out another half an inch (there was about 0.25 inches of material to let out, and it needed another 3 to fit properly). When I came back to pick it up, still not pleased with the state of my dress, I wanted my money back for the alteration. She gave me half of the money back (to compensate for the half of my dress I still have?) and told me not to come back to her store. Poor quality work and poor customer service. They are always nice and my dry cleaning, mending, and alterations are always done well and in a reasonable amount of time. I never used to get alterations done, thinking it would be a big chore, but it's quick and no-hassles with these guys. read more
