A high end laundromat this is not, but if you've got one (or five) loads of laundry to get done it's a great place. There were only 2 machines out of order, which was impressive considering how many machines there were. There are a variety of washers that vary in price based on their capacity: $2/load, $2.25, $3, $4, $4.50. I like that there are different machines to choose from based on your needs and you don't have to spend extra money for capacity you're not using. For the dryers (which are all the same) the prices aren't posted, but they are as follows: $1.00 for the first 20 minutes, $0.25 for every additional 7 minutes. That seems a little pricey to me, but I've been out of the laundromat loop for a few years now so perhaps that's average these days. As for the place itself, it was very clean and well lit. There were tons of magazines to read, a pop machine to quench your thirst with Pepsi products, and lots of counter space for folding. The change machine was broken when I was there, but there was a sign instructing you to visit the liquor store a few doors down for change. The guy in the liquor store was very nice and didn't bat an eye at my asking for $3 in quarters. The broken change machine was maybe a little inconvenient, but it was a nice day so I didn't care. The guy who runs the place is a funny, friendly Greek man. He was very helpful with one of my washers, which turned out to be a little fussy. But everything worked in the end, and I walked out with 3 sets of clean sheets and 2 clean blankets. The best part of all of this is that Gold Star is a 30 second walk from my apartment. Bless the Gold Star. Without it, I'd have to walk really really far up hills that are intensely annoying, on paths likely unshovelled, to pay with "credits" instead of coins. Only to have my rolling cart go topsy turvy and my skivvies slide down the ice through a pile of Somerville Sludge. Things do slide down Spring Hill this way... ask me about the time the bottom dropped out of a full box of pornography and it created a veritable waterfall of T+A down Porter St... But as i was saying, bless the Gold Star... Unfortunately, well, half the machines don't work. But they have some trashpicked exercise equipment... think about it... Get fit on the squeaky ROWING MACHINE! while you dry your clothes! Also present, bicycle, and stairmaster. So I will, continue to patronize the Blessed Gold Star, because, my landlord is a cheap bastard, and the basement is not a place where you'd make things "clean." At least the unworking machines are labeled, and if you need it, there's usually a cache of spare "doesn't work/ doesn't heat" notes stuck to the side of the last dryer. And the lady who closes up at night has let me finish up, instead of kicking me out with a pile of damp clothes... which always seemed like a worthwhile gesture of good will. Amen. Beware that the hours are not consistent. There is a sign on the door saying the doors lock at 9:30 pm though the laundromat doesn't close until 10. I put my laundry in the dryer, ran out to get a snack down the strret, sprinted and came back at 9:25 pm - the doors were locked and the lights were off. I called the two the numbers on the door and after about 15 mins, got the owner, who seemed pretty pissed off that I was asking to get back in and grab my laundry. He said he'd call around and ask if someone else could let me in. After 15 more mins of waiting in 15-20 degree temps, he calls back and tells me I need to wait until the morning to get my laundry. Fine - I say I'll be back at 8 am (when they open, according to the sign on the door) and he tells me "well we might open at 8, maybe 10:30, I don't really know, it depends on the weather." Uh, what? It wasn't going to snow or rain the next day, so I suspect the dude just didn't want to open his business on time. I came back at 8 am, and some other poor guy was also waiting outside for the place to open so he could do his laundry. I walked back and forth, got coffee... They eventually opened at 9:30 am. Glad I didn't need to be anywhere that day... I was a loyal patron of Gold Star for 3 years and that's the last I'll ever go there again. read more

A tidy, spare laundry mat that does it's job. The machines work, mostly, and the building is kept reasonably warm. It doesn't feel creepy. The magazines are pleasant to read and include old issues of the New Yorker. It's been empty most times I've gone. read more

Never did I think I would feel so compelled to write such a negative review for a Laundromat, but oh well, here it goes. I've been going to this laundromat because it is right across the street from where I live. Because of the convince of location, I could put up with the constant broken dryers, and the all-to-frequent out of service coin machine but my past visit was enough for me to call it quits! The coin machine was not working in the morning, so I thought I would try again later in the day. When I got in there, the owner was working on one of the machines. I asked if the coin machine would be working at all that day. He seemed annoyed that I would even ask such a question. He mumbled something under his breath and then retreated to the back room, for what I thought would be coins to exchange my bills. He came back up front and in an unnecessarily hostile tone shouted, "If you're not going to do any laundry, why should I stop what I am doing to help you?!" I was dumbfounded by this reaction, and gave a look of total disgust. I responded with, "I live across the street, and came in to see if the coin machine was working." He dismissed this answer with the flick of his arm and went back to the machine he was working on. I really don't expect much from a Laundromat. It seems like a pretty straight forward business model but to treat patrons of your establishment in such a short, tempered way just baffles me. There are plenty of other Laundromats on Highland Ave all within walking distance. Needless to say, I think I will be giving one of them my service from here on out. read more

This is my neighborhood laundromat, so I've been going there out of convenience. But if there was any other option I'd have started going elsewhere a while ago. I can live with the occasional broken machine or eaten quarter (to be expected in an old-school place), but not only are more dryers broken than ever, but the change machine is broken. Again. The last two times I've tried to do laundry, the machine has been out of service. I understand that things break from time to time, but when a business literally requires quarters you would think it would be a priority to have a backup plan or a long-term fix. If you go here...it's a gamble if you'll even be able to wash anything. read more

This laundromat is in a great location, and the vast majority of the washers/dryers are usually in working order. However... I have been on the receiving end of some super shady characters, especially at night. In one instance, my boyfriend was out of sight, but next to me, and probably saved me from an uncomfortable and potentially risky situation. I have seen numerous instances of the owner reacting poorly to customer suggestions. Most recently (March 2012), he was getting testy with a woman who was demanding that the machines use hot water. He was not open to the suggestion. SO...you should at least be aware that there is no hot water running through the machines. If you care about this, take a tip from the lady and complain. read more

What's not to like? Nothing fancy, but this place is good at what it does. And there aren't meters to feed out front, which is convenient. Just 2-hour parking spots. How about the 75 cent soda machine? How about the coin-op supplies vending thing if you need detergent, etc.? Lot's of places don't even have those stocked. The single star is for location. I've been going here for years because it's close and convenient, but today was the last time. Over the past several months, this establishment continues to deteriorate. Every time I go in, another machine is out of order. The owner has the nerve to tell me not to overload the machines. Well, I wouldn't have to if more than 3 were working at one time. It doesn't help that he seems annoyed by the prospect of having to refill the change machine. i love that this laundromat is so close to my house, that def makes life easier for this non-driver. It's not fancy by any means, but it is convenient and quiet. It differs from typical laundromats in that there is no office- i think the owners lives in one of the nearby houses- so there is no fluff and fold option or anyone to see if you have an issue. Also no bathroom. but there is a nice number of washers and dryers and i like the extra large ones best, i pack em full and all my clothes come out clean for less money. often the change machine is broken with an attached note to either change singles in the soda machine or go a few doors down to another store for change- kind of inconvenient. when the owner does stop in, he is usually friendly and helpful, but like i said, usually you are on your own. i dont know what id do if they ever went out of business though, it is a blessing to have them so close by! read more

I wish I could pick zero stars for this laundromat. It is not staffed by any human being on Sunday mornings at least, so if you encounter a problem with any of the equipment, you are on your own. This morning we needed to buy laundry detergent and inserted 75 cents of quarters and followed the instructions. The machine appeared to be non-functional, in that when you pull the knob, the box of detergent gets pushed a couple of inches, but nothing is released from the machine. There was no sign indicating that the machine was not operational. After multiple attempts and $3 in quarters later, we were still without detergent. When I called the number on the door for assistance, I was told: "Why did you put $3 in when the machine asks for 75 cents?" He then went on to insist that the machine was "not broken" it was just "jammed." Those mean the same thing to someone who had to leave to get enough quarters to do their laundry. I will never go back to this laundromat, and I hope you also save yourself the exercise in frustration. I understand that this laundromat may be close to your house, but if you can spend the extra time getting to a laundromat where you will be treated with kindness when you encounter a problem instead of disdain and rudeness, I would recommend the extra effort. read more
