Walking into Chop 40 was like visiting a roadside bar and grille back in Wyoming. Everything is covered in wood, but instead of taxidermized animal heads you have plastic dinosaur heads, which I think I prefer. So, needless to say I was pretty comfortable walking in here. I ordered the Amber while my wife got the Mojito Cider (I know, doesn't make sense, but stay with me) off the tap and both were outstanding in their own rights. My wife really wanted to try the Salmon burger and I'm always down to see if a reno place can do a cowboy burger, so that's what we got. Both were pretty great. The salmon burger tasted fresh, and while I was a bit thrown by the fact that it had bacon on it, it actually worked out pretty well. The crema, which had cilantro on it, was good in that it didn't really taste like it had cilantro, something my wife can't stand. My burger was cooked just right, and seriously the bacon they use is of a great caliber. While I had fries on the side of my burger, my wife got the roasted pepper bisque which may have been my favorite thing on the menu. I liked it more than your typical lobster bisque even. It ended up being far too much food for us, but we were glad to have sampled from the menu. We'll definitely visit again! read more

Honestly I have no idea how chop 40 is rated 4 stars. First impressions were pretty high, seemed like my kind of place to grab a beer and some food. After being seated at my table, I waited 15 minutes for a beer, then ordered some appetizers which came out with my entree. Over 1 hour later. While waiting I noticed 3 tables get up and walk out due to the long wait times. I wish I could say the food made up for the wait.. food was average at best, on top of listening to the bartenders yelling at the food runners i almost thought the bar rescue dude arrived. This place felt like a cozy country cabin. A few different intimate sections with electric decor and a warm fireplace. Come hungry because the portions are ridiculously big. My salad was a small mountain. (Big Johnson) Steak was very saucy and just a little bit chewy but overall delicious. It's one of the very few places to eat in the Verdi area. Been wanting to check out this place for a while now and we finally pulled the trigger, we decided to sit outside and enjoy the warm summer evening, they had good music on the outdoor speakers. We got an appetizer and it was beautiful! The chicken bacon wrapped jalapeños poppers were super tasty and a great appetizer. For the entrees we got the smash 40 and the tacos with carne asada and pork belly. Everything was very tasty, the pork belly was definitely over cooked but besides that everything was great. I love this local place. The ambiance definitely has a "Cheers" vibe. The service is always great. I would suggest showing up early(ish) on the weekend for any dining experience as it fills up, especially in the Summer. You can't go wrong with the food although it dramatically changed after Covid. I have a theory that Chop 40 has the best BBQ in the area. I haven't had every BBQ in the area yet and I haven't tried all of Chop 40's BBQ yet either, but I would like to present the evidence I do have: The 40 Smash. They take a giant baked potato and smash it and top it with your meat of choice (my choice is always Tri-tip! Their Tri-tip is absolutely lovely!), lots of cheese, BBQ sauce, green onions, jalapeños, and olives. Tip: ask for a side of ranch. Their ranch is spectacular and I love pouring it over my 40 Smash. I CANNOT EVEN TYPE THIS WITHOUT DROOLING. It is just so incredibly delicious. It's the peak of comfort food for me. And the portion is giant, so I get to bring half home and enjoy it again the next day and I swear to you, it's just as good the second day. This is one of my hands-down favorite things I've ever eaten. I love it so well that I've tried to re-create it at home, but mine was not near as good so I'll just keep going back to Chop 40 to get it. Eventually I'll probably try other stuff from their menu. My husband and kid had sandwiches and those seemed good (is their bread made in house? Their bread is really excellent.) Darling little rustic restaurant and bar located in Verdi right off 80. It's very warm and welcoming the minute you walk through the door and service was great! The menu is full of comfort food selections plus salads, pizza, burgers and sandwiches. We started with the elote balls (deep fried cheese blend with corn and seasonings) which paired perfectly with my ice cold Sierra Nevada draft beer and were really good. They have a full bar and large draft beer and wine selection. The restaurant smokes their own meats and we selected a tri tip bbq sandwich with some crispy shoe string fries (you can also add garlic or choose a side salad instead). The meat was really flavorful and next time I'm going to try the pulled pork, We added sides of baked beans with bacon and macaroni and cheese-both were delicious. We came here for dinner on our anniversary after visiting the distillery next-door. It was a Saturday night and the place was full! A new found friend pointed out the community table in the back, And we were able to sit down. Our server, Shontel immediately brought us menus and took our drink order. I ordered a Truckee River red. Once again, it was delicious! I ordered the tri-tip sandwich on a jalapeño cheese roll with a side of onion rings. The onion rings were crunchy, warm and perfect! The tri-tip sandwich had an ample supply of meat, and had a nice smoky barbecue flavor. The community table soon filled up with other folks, and we had a wonderful time visiting with everyone! People here were just happy! Why three stars? I'm so glad you asked! After visiting with everyone for awhile, I got up to use the restroom. It is a gender neutral restroom. Actually it's more like a gas station restroom! It needed someone to clean it up! I am not one that goes around taking pictures of restrooms, but I appreciate those that do. This place was dark and smelled like stale urine. Fortunately, I wasn't in there to socialize. I did my biznis and bailed! This was another one of those happy accidents. The family and I were coming home from over the pass a short while ago and had to change our plans a bit drastically in order to beat the storm coming back over the pass. We made it ahead of the storm, but once we were in the clear we decided that we really didn't want to just go straight home, yet. We discussed our options to get the rest of the way home, but we couldn't decide. So, I do what I often do these days... I looked on Yelp for our different options. I discovered that in Verdi there was a memorial park that we had never visited and I remembered that there was a new-to-us restaurant there that sounded really good and had pictures telling us the same thing. I didn't even get through all the pictures before our route was decided. Chop 40 is amazing! They have a rather diverse menu that honestly made it really hard to decide what to order: pizza, salad, burgers, tacos, chicken parmesan, smoked pork and so much more! We were all starving; and that was a good thing. The portions are huge and the flavors are such that you just don't want to stop. I totally enjoyed the Chainsaw Tacos. You get a choice of fish, smoked chicken, smoked pork, or tri tip. You can choose up to two different types for your plate. They come on corn tortillas topped with house slaw and feta cheese. I chose to have two fish and two smoked pork tacos. Wow! They were both outrageous in flavor. By the way, I'm thinking that anything with their smoked pork would be amazing. At first, I was puzzled as to how they all would work with these same toppings, but believe me... they REALLY work! I also enjoyed some Mac & Cheese. This isn't your momma's mac & cheese, either. This has smoked gouda, gruyere, bacon, garlic, onion, and prosciutto. It's the kind that makes you emit little food provoking moans. My teen son ordered a Western Bacon Cheeseburger and then got a side of their Macaroni and Cheese. He had to remove one of his huge onion rings (and enjoy that separately) and then squish his burger down to eat it. He loved it! My hubby ordered the Italian Stallion Sandwich on Jalapeno Cheddar Bread with a side of Posole Soup. His Italian Stallion had smoked ham, salami, banana peppers, bell peppers, onions, provolone, and Italian dressing. It often comes on a sourdough roll, but he chose the Jalapeno Cheddar Bread and thought it was terrific! I love the atmosphere and the service was wonderful. Our waitress was super friendly and had impeccable timing and style. We will definitely return when we are in the area... and maybe even when we aren't. Great already... and they are still spreading their wings. Chop 40 took this space from a pizza & burger that was good, but not compelling. Both the rustic, planked diniing room, and the cozy bar area got clever and subtle upgrades that improved the feel of the space. The backyard dining area got a reboot, too, better furniture, but keeping the beautiful sky. - but not everyone will care about vibe and furniture, let's get on to the food! - The menu is already solid, and slowly expanding at the same time. I'm there for the output of the smoker: The Chicken Bomb, smoked bacon and chicken wrapped around a hot pepper has ruined me for all other 'poppers'. They have a smoked salmon burger like no other, I suspect they smoke the salmon first, and then reconstruct it as a patty, and grill it. I've not seen the Chops alluded to in the places name make it to the menu yet, but I keep checking in, waiting for that happy day. read more

We were here four years ago and wow what a change. Not a good change in any way. Now you go up and order at cashier station. I ordered an 805 beer which was fine and a half rack of ribs with two sides. The ribs came smothered in sauce. I soon understood why. These ribs must have been cooked for 5 days. Not only over cooked the worst cut of ribs I have ever had just just plain disgusting. The sides onion rings so overcooked some crumbled like ash. Just terrible. The Mac and cheese no flavor but the best thing I had. I did not finish even half the meal which is not at all like me. My wife had a reuben sandwich with was smothered in thousand island dressing. So disgusting she didn't hardly touch it. Her beer was her dinner. The poor gal at the register was nice and friendly trying her best. So sad this place has gone way downhill. Chop 40 has stepped up their game with a new menu! I love living in Verdi, but I'll be honest- with only a few restaurants in town, you start to run out of new things to try. Luckily for me, Chop 40 added a bunch of new things to their menu and so far they've all been great! Some of the new menu items are recycled versions of old things, so don't be too bummed if you were a big fan of the old menu. The queso on the carne asada fries, for example, is the same cheese sauce that they used to do for the beer cheese and pretzel dish. New menu items we've tried: -The Maui burger: ham, pineapple, and cole slaw on a burger. Boyfriend said it was really good. -The Korean BBQ burger: Almost comically large. A half pound burger with what felt like almost another half pound of smoked pork belly, onion rings, cheese, sauce, lettuce, and tomato. I literally could not fit my mouth around this. Excellent -The Nashville fried chicken sandwich: So good! This is my favorite new menu addition. The chicken had just the right amount of batter (not too much) and it was nice and spicy. -The chicken avocado melt: love the bread on this one- cheddar cheese is grilled on the outside of the bread until it's crusty -Risotto balls -Carne asada fries: I think this is the only menu item so far that I would make changes to. It was good, but it doesn't come with guacamole, which feels almost criminal for carne asada fries. It would be nice to have this as an optional additional topping. Also, they've started serving breakfast, and after my visit today I think this might be my new go-to! I got the breakfast burrito with tri tip. It also comes with black beans (refried style) and breakfast potatoes. This breakfast was SOLID, and could easily feed two hungry people comfortably. I appreciated the opportunity to have a breakfast burrito with something other than the standard bacon/sausage/ham, and the potatoes and black beans were really good on their own. Also, you all know that I'm a price-conscious girl- $17 (including tax) for a burrito might seem steep, but when you factor in the sides and that you could split this comfortably with someone, it feels like a bargain. Chop 40 has tried breakfast before but it didn't last- I really hope that it sticks around this time because I will be heartbroken if it goes away! read more

This was the first time my husband and myself have visited this place. The wait staff was very nice and the food was incredible. I had the "2 proteins" for $19.99, which consisted of a half rack of ribs, (more than a half) and bbq pulled pork. A little note, the pulled bbq pork was on the sweet side. Then for my 2 sides I got, mac and cheese and a loaded baked potato. The servings were very large, come with an appetite!! My husband also got the "2 proteins" but he got the pork pops (pork chops) and bbq pulled pork, his sides were, smashed potatoes and mac and cheese.... We brought a lot of food back with us and shared it with our dogs..but not too much... I SO recommend people to go to this place...awesome all around. read more
