Though the number of staff is low, one server, a bartender and I believe a bus boy they worked extremely well as a team and thus provided a very high level of service. The decor is rustic and very welcoming. We tried the Homemade Chicharrones, they were still popping when brought to the table, no question freshly made, delicious with or without the sauce. Mom had the Beef Burger, perfectly cooked and she normally has leftovers, not today, said it was to good for that. The wife had the 40 Smash, the server made sure to let her know it had some spice to it, it was amazing, I didn't think that spicy, nice touch at the end. I had the Chainsaw Street Tacos, now the drama, which ones to order, Smoked Tri-tip, Smoked Pork, Chicken, Grilled Fish (Salmon today) or Veggies. If fish all 4, otherwise 2-2 so went Tri-tip and pork, amazing flavor, the coleslaw was fresh & crisp, come hungry. Trying to avoid ridiculous traffic on Interstate 80, we jumped off the freeway, took Hwy. 40 thru beautiful downtown Verdi and found Chop 40. Football on multiple TV's, indoor and outdoor seating (it was snowing, so a heated tent with a TV made sitting outside toasty.) Chris, our bartender was perfect. After striking out at two different downtown Reno restaurants (hour long wait to get seated!), we headed out of town to Chop 40. What a great decision. An old west style building greeted us as we pulled into the parking lot. As I got out of the car, I was struck by the wonderful aromas coming from the building. We were sat right away in a comfortable, rustic dining room. I ordered a Revision IPA from a pretty good list of craft beers. There was a wine list and full bar also. The menu items looked really good and the prices were reasonable. I ordered one of several nightly specials, a 22oz rib eye. The steak came with garlic bread and a salad. Both the salad and garlic bread were delicious. The steak was the star of the show. Perfectly cooked medium rare, and seasoned just right. This is one of the best steaks i'd eaten in a very long time. I will definitely be back! read more

I was driving a long distance (2 hour drive) and hubby wanted to surprise me by ordering takeout tonight so I wouldn't have to cook. He ordered 4 soft tacos (2 chicken, 2 pulled pork) and he mentioned a 2nd meal containing a meat dish like chicken breast that happened to come with 2 sides (mac and cheese and broccoli salad) . The person taking the order over the phone suggested the chicken breast dish but didn't give any further details on the dish. Hubby just trusts that whatever they ordered for us would be fine. WRONG! If you look at the pictures, you can't even tell what that dish is let alone what is on top of the supposed chicken breast. Look at the wilted lettuce and old slice of onion, tomato doesn't look appetizing either. Hubby said he tried a bite of the chicken breast dish and it was absolutely dry. He also tried the pulled pork soft taco and said it wasn't very good and threw away the rest of the dish. Every order was smoked, he didn't order smoked chicken but got it anyway. Lucky for me, he tried all of these items before I got home and ended up throwing everything away. I saw the remnants of the mac and cheese and broccoli salad (looked totally gross, dried and wasn't even appetizing). I was smart enough to order Thai food before hubby knew about it and we had that instead of the crap Chop 40 food. We ended up dumping the entire Chop 40 meal in the garbage. What a wasted $40. I don't know why but hubby wanted to give this a try (a 3rd time) but this time takeout. I ate at this restaurant once and they couldn't even make a decent salad. It was enough for me to NEVER go back. Hubby on the other hand wanted to try this 2 more times and all '3' times, it was a pure FAILURE! Food is crap, presentation is horrible (I'm sure Gordon Ramsey would be shooting off obscenities if he tasted and saw what we experienced), and service is horrid (we waited over an hour when we went there last year to eat - mind you, it was a frick'n salad!!! How can you screw this up?!?) TRUST ME! Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT eat at this place. It is absolutely gross. I've had other friends who have concurred with me on this. If you want GOOD food, go down the road (2-3 min away) on Highway 40 towards Sacramento to "Sasquatch Tavern & Grill". We tried the tri tip sandwich, mac and cheese, half rack of ribs, broccoli salad, 40 smash, and pulled pork tacos and I could honestly recommend every single one of those items. Totally worth the drive! This place is rustic and adorable - makes you feel like you're on a cross country road trip through the desert, famished and parched after hours of driving through nothing-land, to come across an oasis, a watering hole... A Chop House! On a lazy weekday afternoon, we came in to this cozy lodge-like joint for an abundance of food and a little bit of drink. Wine prices are fair - only $6 for Canyon Road Cabernet, which is easy to drink and quite a steal. For grub, we ordered the pork pops (comes with shoestring fries), the elote balls, and the smoked salmon burger with mac n cheese on the side instead of fries. Everything took slightly longer than other places, but I always take that as a good sign that they care for the food they serve. When they arrived, the elote balls looked like little fried balls of deliciousness - and gosh darnit, they tasted like it too! Corn, cheese, and an abundance of seasoning are all rolled together and fried into little nuggets, served with a creamy southwest dipping sauce that is so delicious! The pork pops were also incredible - they are like ribs, but better, perfectly formed into lollipops of meaty goodness! Fries were thin and crispy and delicious. The star of the meal was absolutely the salmon burger. Served on a potato bun with bacon, cheese, and all the fixins, the flavor was just phenomenal. The mac n cheese was also delicious and grown-up tasting, with pancetta and mature cheeses throughout. We left tipsy and absolutely stuffed... all for less than $60! A serious steal these days. It's worth the gorgeous drive into nothing-land Verdi... though with wine prices that low, you should consider an Uber back home. :-P read more

A small baked potato cut up with choice of meat, cheese , jalapeños, olives, and supposed to have sour cream which was missing. It was warm. Not hot. Tasted ok. My husband ordered the tritip sandwich with onion rings. To me the onion rings were perfect. Very dark and crunchy. My husband says overcooked. All in all the food was ok. Where we had a problem was we waited 25 minutes for our food. It was a Sunday at 4 pm. Not busy at all. Waitress said she was new but it was ridiculous. Every table waited a very long time. We've been to this little restaurant a few times and have always had great service and GREAT food. This last visit was awful. Waited 2 hours for our order that was left on the counter and never served. Went to the hostess counter and asked to just pay for the drinks and app (since that's all that we enjoyed)-- come to find out our order had been sitting for an hour just never brought out-- even after telling our waitress twice that our food was never brought out. Mind you, she was the only waitress working.... Who else was going to bring it? Paid for our stuff, left no tip (which is unusual for us but this seemed appropriate). 2 days later the charge on our card is $10 more than what was signed for at the counter! As non meat eaters "Chop" we figured, was not going to be a good choice for us but we were so hungry after a long hike we decided to give it a try. We both opted for the salmon burger and it was FANTASTIC! We appreciated the large portion and loved the fact that the fish was fresh NOT a reheated patty from Costco that I believe most restaurants serve as their fish burger. Even the bun tasted very fresh. I opted for the sweet potato waffle fries and was give a pile of them - super! We also loved the cozy vibe of the place and the bar area looks great. The staff was super and the server was really great - checked in to ask how the food was but not overbearing. The *only* reason I am not giving it 5 stars as I would love it if the menu had maybe one more option for non meat eaters - even a fish & chips. And both of the soups for the day were meat based so that was a little bit of a bummer... Otherwise we really liked this place a lot and will absolutely be making another visit - very soon! read more

We we originally going to breakfast down the street but it was closed. Luckily we passed by Chop 40 on the way and decided to see if they had breakfast. Food was very well prepared. I had the deep fried French toast. It was as if a funnel cake and toast had a baby. It was topped with fresh fruit. I'm not a big blueberry fan but even I couldn't deny how good they were. My boyfriend had the traditional breakfast with eggs over easy, bacon, potatoes, and steak. Steak was cooked properly (medium) and the potatoes were great. Not hard like some restaurants. Cooked in skillet with steak and onions. It had a great flavor. Cute little small restaurant with great ambiance. They even have a cute outdoor seating area. Had seen this place when driving thru Verdi before but hadn't tried it. It, in my opinion, has a rustic, upscale biker bar vibe frequented by many of the locals. A couple of friends that were doing some work at our house told us we HAD to try it. One said they have the best pretzels in the world. The other said everything is really good, but their tacos were special. We were greeted by our server, Lex, and she was a treat. Friendly smile with an outgoing personality. We've been back a couple of times and she greets us by name. All of the servers were friendly and helpful. A good working team. Sadly, pretzels weren't on the menu, but I ordered the Sierra Cowboy tri-tip sandwich. What a meal! If not THE best, one of the best sandwiches I've had in my 71 years! It was GREAT!! And HUGE! Was there this Wednesday to eat dinner. Not sure whether they've changed owners or management; however, the staff appeared to have no interest in getting out from behind a relatively empty bar....Parking lot was surprisingly empty based off of past experiences and when had driven by on prior Tuesdays. Got a text from my wife and daughter inviting me to meet them at Chop 40 for a late lunch. Having been subject to their service several times in the past I asked them to order for me as they we're getting there first. Unbelievable, no really unbelievable, it took them 20 minutes to place an order for three burgers and an hour and ten minutes to get the food. The waitress eventually came apologizing for the delay and saying the order got lost. The restaurant wasn't even busy and we didn't see the waitress for at least 45 minutes. Every time I've been there the service has been the same, really poor.
