I literally had the best sandwich of my life yesterday - well half a sandwich but I ate the other half cold today and it was as tasty as yesterday's hot sandwich. I'd ordered "the Cowboy" and it was better than described. Spicy and lingering taste of whatever yummy sauce they put on it. The French fries were crisp and today I heated the half I didn't eat yesterday in my air fryer. Two days and two great meals! Food: 4 Stars as it has been consistent and generous portions over several visits. Service: 3 Stars as during our last visit we needed to flag down our waiter for follow-on items. I have a yardstick, if beer and wine is ordered prior to the meal, seems very likely that a second drink would be a common-sense follow-up question by a thoughtful waiter. Nope, a simple draft beer and wine took abnormally long to arrive. And, I agree with the other observations that suggest "recognized guests" are more promptly attended to. Billing: 2 Stars as you'll want to check your total for an automatically charged service fee associated with a credit card. Admittedly, the waiter said they remove the fee if paying by cash, but nowhere on the bill is this stated. Think of how eateries have a statement on the bill about a default tip when serving large parties, so I know the technology exists to print this information. Why not be up front with your paying customers? My contacts in the food service industry continue to tell me that "cash is king". . . Fundamentally, the owners of Chop 40 are sitting on the proverbial goldmine as the unique atmosphere and setting, along with a unique menu set this establishment apart. However, the sub-part service is such a large distraction that they risk alienating long-time, Reno-area customers. Should Chop 40 loose it's kitchen skills, then it's game over! read more

In a nutshell, terrible service unless they know you, overpriced terrible cocktails, and food that smelled good. See details below if you want to know the story. . . From the moment we walked through the door, we were treated as if we were inconveniencing them by asking for a table. We were totally agreeable and ok with a table or the bar. After about 10 minutes, we were directed to the bar where there was one seat for two of us and the gal with the green shirt that was from somewhere in South Carolina promised to get us another stool. We went to where we were shown to go. Another couple at the bar mentioned someone had taken the stool that belonged where we were. We ordered two drinks, Jameson on the rocks and a Grey Goose or Tito's Lemondrop. $14 for the lemondrop that couldn't have had a shot of vodka in it. I'm not sure it had any in it because it tasted like lemon juice and Cointreau. The single shot of Jameson on the rocks was $12.25. There were 3 local guys who appeared to be finishing up on the other side of the couple next to us that were standing and leaning on empty stools. I asked them if we could have one of the stools and one of the guys jokingly told me not to yell at him. We laughed and he said he was leaving anyway, but the bartender told him not to give us the stool. The bartender brought us our drinks and we patiently waited for a stool, but decided if we finished our drinks and hadn't received menus or a stool that we'd find a different spot. The food smelled good and the few people eating seemed to be enjoying it. After a bit longer we were asked if we wanted to move to a table when one came open. We should have said yes, but we were trying to be easy and agreeable as they seemed overwhelmed, even though there were two empty dirty tables and the three spots at the bar where the local guys were bullshitting and leaning on the back of the empty stools, so we said we would stay at the bar. We still had not been offered menus or the 2nd stool we were told was coming. After another short while, a couple at the end of the bar left and the bartender asked us if we wanted to move into those spots. We moved and ordered another Jameson on the rocks. We found a menu that another patron had left and decided we would order if asked before we finished our cocktails. The bartender gave us the 2nd Jameson on the rocks, but never asked us if we wanted to order even though she knew we came for dinner. We finished our drinks and asked the lady in the green shirt with South Carolina on it if we could have our bill because we had already been there more than 50 minutes while feeling like we may have never been asked what we wanted to eat. We finally got our bill of $38.50 for a terrible lemondrop and two shots of Jameson on the rocks. We left hangry and irritated that we never got to taste the food we were smelling. I've heard good things and had a nice Mother's Day there last year, but I won't go back unless I'm with a recognized local as they seemed to be the only patrons receiving food. Obviously, by the length of this review, that I'm very disappointed and hope the staff will take into account how they made good paying patrons feel. I wouldn't recommend wasting your time. Maybe if the bacon was crunchier? Our server was smiley and made sure we had everything we needed and made good recommendations. This is a cute little restaurant & bar out in Verdi, Nevada. It has both outdoor and indoor dining with a rustic and cozy atmosphere. This place is also family friendly as there were children dining here, but no specific children's menu. The waitress Lex was very sweet and provided excellent service. We came here for the weekend breakfast (keep in mind they are open at 8am) and both were delicious. The French toast was slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was topped with delicious fresh strawberries, blueberries, and powdered sugar. The country fried steak was cooked perfectly and served with a side of eggs,, toast, and house potatoes. Rustic, Quirky and Inviting. Chop 40 is the best of Reno. Located on Old Hwy 40 in Verdi, Chop 40 is worth the drive. Being a smaller restaurant, the staff while friendly and welcoming, were hustling for sure. Not in a bad way but they had their work cut out for them taking care of customers. We had a larger group (10) so I won't review all of the dishes but wanted to hit the highlights of our evening. Starting with the Wings. A generous portion, I prefer my wings "naked" without the fanfare of sauces. The wings were served hot and cooked with a nice crispy snap, while keeping the chicken tender and juicy. A couple of our guests had the Sierra Cowboy Sandwich. A perfect blend of Smoked Tri-Tip with House BBQ Sauce, Bacon, Cheddar, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, with a Sierra Mustard Mayonnaise Mix​, all served on a toasted served on jalapeno cheddar bread. To quote my friend, "OMG. This thing is de-licious!!". It looked like the winner of the evening. The Chainsaw Tacos looked equally amazing. Four Parmesan Crusted Corn Tortillas, filled with tender BBQ Tri-tip, topped with House Slaw, Feta Cheese and Cilantro. Served with a side of red salsa. Taco's looked solid, with smiles all around. One of our friends ordered the Baja California Style Tacos. For more of a coastal touch, it was served with Beer Battered Fish, wrapped in a Cheddar Crusted Flour Tortilla, then finished with a Chipotle Aioli. My wife ordered the American Classic Burger. A true classic with a smashed patty topped with American cheese, crispy bacon, sauteed onions and jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes and Russian dressing. My wife opted for the fries as her side. In full transparency, it did take the kitchen a couple tries to get my wife's burger right. The first issue was due to the cheese. She ordered it without cheese. And the second time, the burgers were a touch under-cooked, to her liking. The third time was the charm. To quote my wife, "This was the best burger I have ever had. Anywhere!!!" This place is my new favorite spot, I could eat here every day. The Argentinian style steak is incredible, and the nachos are honestly the best I've ever had. I also tried the 40 Smash, which was really good but definitely on the spicier side. The food is always dynamite and I don't think you can get a bad meal ever there, maybe mix up on the eggs or chill. Chris is an outstanding bartender and makes you laugh the entire time you are there! She is a true treasure. Molly is such a cutie and always there to help Chris out!! I went here for dinner last night for the first time. It was awesome! It's relatively small with a bar on one side and a restaurant on the other side. The inside can best be described as rustic. When we arrived a bit before 7:00p. there were a few open tables but they filled up quickly. We really liked our server! She was pleasant and gave several menu recommendations. I had the smash burger. It was delicious and juicy and cooked perfectly. It came w fries which were piping hot. It looked so good I immediately starting eating it before I took a picture of it. My husband had the fish and chips and announced it was the best he had ever had. He also noted the cold slaw was delicious as well. We shared a piece of black forest cake which was also very tasty. We went for a hike in California with friends and stopped here for lunch on the way back. I had heard good things about Chop 40 and had been looking forward to trying it out. The atmosphere was comfortable and clean and not too loud. We had 6 in our party; 4 adults and 2 kiddos. The service was a tad slow for my liking - we even had to get up and find the waitress at one point because she forgot to bring bbq sauce (never came back to check in after bringing the food out) for one of the kids and just could not get her attention. They were out of one beer and no longer serving another listed on their menu. The food? Kiddos ordered chicken strips which they rated as "meh" (though they did look very good). Adults ordered a hangover burger, chicken avocado on sourdough, avocado BLT (BLAT) on sourdough with seafood bisque, and a Smash 40 with tri tip. After doing some hiking around Verdi we drove past this place and it looked popular and comfortable so we added it to our list. My wife looked up the menu, as she does, and after that our fate was sealed. We stopped in for dinner and were quickly brought in out of the cold night and met with the most delicious smells wafting from the kitchen. I settled on ordering the Pepper Popper Burger, perfectly cooked and seasoned and crowned with a glorious jalapeno popper on top. My wife had the patty melt and she really enjoyed it. For an app, we split the elote balls, this was yet another win. The staff was fantastic. They were prompt and very fondly. I looked up dog friendly places and this place popped up and it did not disappoint. They have outdoor seating and the team was so nice and accommodating, they brought him a huge bowl of water too. I ordered a Paloma from the special and the jalapeño popper burger with a side salad and let me tell you, this burger was insanely good. Wow, I cannot wait to go back to this restaurant and will every time we are in Reno! Our friends live near there and recommended it so our group of 6 met there for brunch. There was only one table that could fit 6, all the other tables were max 4. Sitting on kegs made into seats left our feet dangling and wanting to place them somewhere. But boy the food and service made up for it! I had the grilled chicken sandwich with avocado, cheddar and crispy bacon. And yes the bacon was crispy! The bread was then cooked on a bed of cheddar and it was the best sandwich bread every! I have never had the bread grilled in cheese before, and was a bit worried it would be too chewy and greasy but somehow it was soft with the perfect texture. I must go back and have this again, but there were so many great items on the menu and every dish we ordered looked amazing! Everyone loved their food. I did upgrade my side to onion rings for $2. They were batter fried and perfectly crispy, but for some reason had a hint of cinnamon taste to them which I did not like but did eat all of! My partner had the breakfast tacos with eggs only, no meat. He loved them and the potatoes they came with. The others in our party were pleased as well. I didn't realize that the bar which was almost full has slots at each seat, that's fun! The atmosphere of the restaurant was rustic and had interesting things to look at on the wall. Today is Saturday. We drove to Verdi to enjoy Chop 40's breakfast (served only on weekends). Our server informed us that the cook decided not to prepare breakfast today !! The only menus available were the standard & "special" all-day menus. The special offered Eggs Benedict. The cook chose not to honor that item either. Yelp tells me I am the DUKE of Chop 40. With more visits than any other Yelper, sorry to say this locally owned business that caters to locals needs to step up to the plate & not continue on this downhill path. I'm not sure I'm comfortable having to quiz the staff on what menu items the cook is willing to prepare before actually sitting down for a meal. read more

This is one of our favorite places. So, it pains me to give this review. We came this morning because we knew they had breakfast until 2pm. The server gave us the menu and the specials menu. We were surprised that there were only 2 items for breakfast. She said they're not going to have breakfast anymore. We need more time to change our meal decision. When she came back to take our order, I ordered the Italian Eggs Benedict from the specials menu. She said they were still serving breakfast on Saturdays. But she would have to ask the chef. This may be my most epic yelp review as this place deserves it. Chop 40 is the quintessential small town country western restaurant and on several occasions I have had the pleasure of dining here. I have to say, every time, I know it will be consistently an excellent dining event. As mentioned the vibe is a country western atmosphere with a friendly and attentive staff. Even when they are slammed or short staffed they stay composed and friendly. What really stands out are the dishes themselves. First off, let me start by saying that the Brussels sprouts are out of this world! I am already a fan of Brussel sprouts and Chop 40 reaffirms why. They are roasted to perfection and the pork belly just takes it to the next level. For me, this could be a meal on its own. Next up, the cowboy burger. Equally impressive. The juicy and tasty patty is flavorful, and the crispy onion rings and tangy BBQ sauce are the perfect complement. I love composing the perfect bite with this burger, EYES POPPING YUMMY! Not to be ignored is the Mac n cheese - it is creamy, cheesy, and just plain delicious. If you are in Reno/Sparks reading this and curious about this small town restaurant, please come!
