It's been a long time coming. This place has been closed for so long. Apparently getting permits to open a new restaurant in Leonia is no easy feat. But the over a year long anticipation was worth the wait. Seriously the owners are the sweetest people. Didn't get their names but they really appreciate every patron and every business and you can feel their love and care and passion. Expect the food to be priced at nyc levels. Oysters will run you nearly 4 dollars a pop. The special rolls are all $15 and up, averaging around $18-20. The sashimi almost $3-4 a piece as well. Not a lot of choices off the conveyor belt aka the model train running through but it was a cool sight to see! Would recommend you sitting at the bar for the experience. But those prices are expected from a sushi/Japanese establishment. Putting that aside, What I kind say is the sashimi is great and fresh. Big eel portions. Just wish it was more filling! Decided to also order an entree, pan fried white fish special and that was so good! Want some veggies? Order that. You get broccoli and carrots a side of mash potatoes and rice. Definitely would recommend that for a healthy main. Unfortunately my boyfriend and I both had a slight stomachache immediately after leaving. If i were to guess it might be the oysters. Honestly came in with no expectations with my boyfriend during their soft opening. We are sushi fanatics and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of fish. The special rolls were super fun and the rice to ingredients ratio was perfect. I generally hate when rolls are gigantic and have too much rice. But this restaurant did it juuuust right. The sauce is also the perfect amount so you can taste all of the different flavors come together. I also had uni and sweet shrimp a LA cart. I have to say it was one of the freshest I've ever had. The manager/owner was very friendly and extremely accommodating. She showed us the train themed sushi conveyor belt which was so fun and different. This restaurant is super cute. The outside looks like a train car and the inside has cute little booths and a train track that goes around the bar area. You can only get the "conveyor belt" experience if you sit at the bar, because the train track does not come out to the booths/tables on the side. If you sit at the table you need to order your food like at any other restaurant. Also, they only run the train on weekends. However, if you come with a small child then they will run the train for the enjoyment of your small child. The sushi is fresh and there is a good variety. We got the Pot Stickers and the Beef Nagimaki to start. My friend is a regular here at ChooChoo and recommended that I go to try it out. I came by on a Sunday afternoon, and it wasn't too busy. They decked out on Halloween decorations, and one server was trying to scare me with the witch by the bathroom, which was pretty funny. At first, we sat at the bar where the train went around carrying plates of sushi, but after a couple spins, my head was spinning. But it's a cute idea. Anyway, you can order from the menu and pick up plates off the train. We mainly decided to order from the menu. We had the tuna tataki for appetizer, scallop skewers, and a few rolls (whatever roll, mother father roll, no name roll, and the choo choo roll). Of the rolls we ordered, I enjoyed the mother father roll the most. The choo choo roll was different, as it includes steak on top. The whatever roll was also interesting, you would eat the roll with the fried shallots that they sprinkle on the sides of the roll. As for the scallop skewers, I felt the bacon overpowered the scallop, and it was a bit overdone. The tuna tataki was seared nicely, the ginger dressing was very minimal. My friend did say the mochi was good, but I didn't try them. It's also nice that the tea they serve is inside thermal bottles, so the tea is kept hot. If you sit at the table, you get the regular thermal. If you sit at the bar, you get a cute penguin thermal for the tea. The servers are all super nice, and they remember their regulars. This is by far my favorite sushi spot. The decor is so cute and it's a really happy place to sit down to eat amazing food. The sushi rice is soft because its not old and I love all of sushi I've tried here because its so fresh. The one thing thats not sushi that I would highly recommend is the Fish Katsu. You wouldnt think of mixing fried fish with tartar sauce and rice like a raccoon, but it's an exceptional mix of flavors because they prepare it all so beautifully. Unfortunately Choo Choo Train just didn't do it for us. The sushi was overpriced and the quality of the fish was just terrible! It tasted old and flavorless. We ordered 2 special rolls, the choo choo sushi for 2, and an unagi don. The unagi don was probably the best dish here bc it was the most simple. We didn't come in with high expectations, we were hoping for it to be similar to Kura, but instead, we paid NYC lower-end-omakase price for take-out grade sushi. Also, we were under the impression their conveyor belt would be running which probably would've been less expensive, but they said they don't run it for lunch hours, only dinner. A much needed local sushi spot that opened recently! My girlfriend and I were passing through Leonia and saw a fun/interesting restaurant design. It piqued our interest and we decided to try it out. When we walked inside we noticed the interior design was so much more fun and unique! There's a spacious sushi bar with trains going around serving small plated sushi! It's essentially revolving sushi style but with toy trains! There are also cozy, decorative, private tables/booths available if you don't want to sit by the bar. The owners and staff were very friendly and accommodating. They showed us around and recommended their popular dishes along with some off the menu items. The dishes we tried was very creative, amusing, and most of all delicious! My favorite roll so far has to be "Say Goodbye Roll". It's a sushi roll plated on a shark plate with fun decorations on it. My overall experience was spectacular! Friendly service, delicious food, and colorful decor all around the restaurant! It is suitable for cute date nights, casual dining, and family friendly. Such a cute and cozy restaurant. You can tell there was a ton of love put into this restaurant. The owners are incredibly kind and funny! I went while the sushi chef had time off for their child's birthday but I was still able to have a spicy tuna roll (which I failed to take a picture of) because I ate it immediately. It tasted so fresh!! The katsudon was incredible and my mom really enjoyed her teriyaki. It was a wonderful lunch with really great conversation as well! i grew up and went to school in this shithole town, and im happy to see that they have something as exciting and unique as choo choo train. first off, the service was good. we were checked on plenty of times, the people working there were very friendly (even cracked some jokes), and were quick. this was ALMOST a 5 star review, but i have one major complaint. the plates of sushi that show up on the sushi train were somewhat limited. what i mean by this is that, during the 1.5 hours or so i was here, the plates were refilled quickly, but constantly by the same items. it was the same dishes and plates. eventually after a few rounds, or 7 plates, i felt like i kept seeing the same items. if they added some variety or switched up the plates every hour, i think that would step this up a knotch. sushi and nigiri, overall were good. very edible and fresh enough. i ordered a seaweeed salad off the menu, which was HUGE. ps i believe plates are $4 each. read more
