This was my first visit and there were so many unique flavors of bread pudding such as ube. Their ube scone was delicious, along with their butterfly pea lemonade. You just need to try them yourself. I was on my way to SCONES BAKERY when I saw that CHOCOLATE AND VANILLA BAKERY next door was open. I figured I'd stop by and get a bread pudding which was advertised on their door since SCONES doesn't have them. I walked inside and told the woman in there HELLO! That person stopped, looked at me and turned away to continue to put some pastries in the display case. WOW! WHAT A COLD SHOULDER! This was part of our wedding favor Taste testing hunt. We got there just a few minutes before closing so of course the case was almost empty of macarons. We tried the Oreo/cookies and cream macaron and it was much better than the other two stores we tried. First of all- the cookie had a cracking sound when I squished it which meant the shell was prepared perfectly and it had a nice airy quality. The cream was sweet but not so much that it hurt my teeth which told me this was one to consider for our wedding favors. Definitely will be back to try more flavors! read more

It's a cute little bakery with one person working. It probably doesn't normally take this long, but I was in back of someone with a big order. I had 12 minutes on my meter and had to refill it. No biggie. The lady in front of me had a big order: a few crème brûlées, panna cotta, some cupcakes, and the soymilk with coffee jelly. It took so long because the owner had to torch the crème brûlée tops. The lady was raving about their panna cotta with coffee jelly, which wasn't being served today, and her companion was ecstatic about her soymilk with coffee jelly. Anyhoo, I ordered the vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting and the red velvet brownie ends. They were ok. The cupcake and frosting were definitely not of the over-sweetened variety, which is nice, but the cake wasn't noteworthy in flavor or texture and the frosting was the texture of butter with not much vanilla flavor. Like I said, it was ok. The red velvet brownie ends were on the dry side, almost chalky. The flavor wasn't rich at all. If I had been fed it blindfolded, I'm not sure I could've told you what flavor it was. I'll go back and try the macarons. I've heard good things about them. Didn't care for the chocolate S'mores mochi though which was a bit of a bummer since a pack of 4 small pieces was nearly $7 (woah). My boyfriend and I been to almost every french macaron place on the island and Chocolate + Vanilla Bakery is our all time favorite. Her flavors are vibrant and colors are super bright and cute. Owner Jill always changes up her flavors so everyday isn't the exact same macarons. We follow her on instagram and every morning I look at instagram before rolling out of bed I see her delicious macarons. She's very consistent with updating her social media (instagram) page which I really like a lot. Awesome way to get more people into your business. So far, my boyfriend and I have tried many flavors. Chocolate, Vanilla, Red Velvet, Trix, Tiramisu, Chocolate Truffle, Strawberry, Lemon, Birthday Cake, Vanilla Bean, Raspberry Cheesecake, Creamsicle, Strawberry Cheesecake, and Haupia Chocolate. I'm not a huge sweets person (but my boyfriend is) and I didn't like macarons until trying this place. So far out of all of those macarons my personal favorite it Birthday Cake. Yay!! Great spot tucked away in Kaimuki where there seems to be a growing number of interesting and delicious options popping up. My son told me about this place. I don't live in the area, but was going to be in the neighborhood yesterday. I wanted to try some of their goodies that are posted on Instagram. I bought the red velvet mochi, which I enjoyed, also got the li hing mui mochi, ube scones, strawberry guava and ube bread pudding. Of all my purchases, the red velvet was my favorite. Now, I'm not sure if the mochi is made fresh daily. In my mind I think they are, but that's not always the case. If they aren't made fresh daily, how long should they last? The first time I tried to come, they were closed (presumably for Chinese New Year's?) but they just had a sign on the door so alas, we didn't get to try their famous chantilly desserts that day. The next time, we finally made it when they were open, but they had sold out of the chantilly things. We settled on two macarons (vanilla and cookies and cream) and the black sesame puffs. Black sesame puffs: The puffed pastry part looks like it would be really crispy and flaky, but it was more tender and soft. Not a bad thing, but it was a little different than expected. We had a very pleasant visit to this bakery today! In addition to being greeted warmly, we were offered a sample of the soft serve vanilla/ube swirl which is very refreshing. The ube butter mochi the reason we visited and it did not disappoint! It has great texture, tastes delicious and is addicting! One of the best bakeries here on the island! They have the Ube Soft serve and best to have it Ala Mode over the Ube Banana bread. There's a variety of Butter Mochi along with Scones. Chocolate and Vanilla Bakery makes heavenly brownies: Caramel Macadamia Nut, Red Velvet, and my FAVORITE as a chocolate lover, her Fudgy Brownie. She also makes cupcakes (different flavors offered daily or weekly), Coffee Panna Cotta (a layer of coffee "jello" juxtaposed by a layer of perfectly sweetened, soft, creamy "pudding"), Creme Brûlée, Bread Pudding (Yummy! Flavors vary), and her newest feature, The Flaky Puffs. The Flaky Puff is similar to a Napoleon. It's two crunchy and flaky pieces of puff pastry encasing a light cream flavored filling. I tried her Matcha and the Nutella. I really liked them! The cream filling is subtle and not overly sweet, the Matcha was a bit stronger in flavor, which was perfect for me, a Matcha lover! But unlike a Napoleon, the Flaky Puffs stayed crispy for several days in an air tight container, refrigerated, with no loss in quality or flavor. I got mine with no sauce drizzled on top. However, some of the items that I was able to get were the fruity pebble mochi, a fudgy brownie, ube bread pudding, and taro bread pudding. The fruity pebble mochi was okay. Looked tastier than it actually was. Fudge brownie was really good, not too sweet and the right amounts amount of density. She had just finished making these when I got there. So, fresh out of the oven brownies were too good to pass up. Good to have a new bakery in the neighborhood! The brownie ends are a good deal, $5 for a half-dozen or so rich brownie chunks with a lovely cocoa flavor. I will definitely be back for these! The cupcakes, on the other hand, leave a bit to be desired. I got a lemon cupcake with raspberry frosting. The frosting was copious but on the airy side, so not too heavy, but also not really heavy on the flavor. The cake portion was far too dry. For cupcakes, I'll probably go somewhere else. One of my favorite nurses was talking about how Kaimuki is blossoming into a foodie town and she mentioned a bakery named Chocolate and Vanilla. About two weeks ago I drove pass this bakery on my way to yoga but was sad to see the shades down, as I was assuming everything was sold out and the store was closed. I walked into a cute little bakery that had a few types of macarons, brownie, and cupcakes. I bought one macron of each flavor: vanilla bean, chocolate truffle, and cookies and cream. I ate the chocolate truffle after my lunch and saved the rest for the later. The chocolate truffle I ate on the day I bought it was delish. The macaron wasn't overly sweet and the cookie had a nice texture to it. The next day I ate the macarons that I saved and they were terrible. The cookie separated, such that there was the shell, air gap, and the rest of the cookie was flat and sticking to the filling. (Does that make sense?) The filling also changed texture. WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!! I had this happen to me once when I bought macarons from La Tour but I left it in my fridge for a week. I could leave a La Tour macaron in my fridge for a few days after I purchased it and it would taste delish. Buy the macarons from Chocolate and Vanilla if you plan on eating it all in one day. I quite like this bakery but it's a little odd. Their posted hours are not accurate. It's says 9am-4, but I've been there several times during those hours and have found them closed. I think the owner just opens whenever they feel like it, which can't be great for business. Also, this isn't your typical bakery. There isn't s lot of product for sale. I suspect they do a lot of catering and their store front is really just there for show. Each time I've been in they've only had 3-4 items for sale, usually macarons and creme brûlée pots. I've tried their macarons and they are pretty decent, light and chewy with good flavors. I've also had their coffee jelly and panna cotta dessert. That was delicious. Creamy and sweet with a bold coffee flavor. If like to try their coffee jelly drink that they advertise but each time I've gone they've been out. Which irks me because shouldn't a bakery be constantly making product? If you're out, make more. There was not much selection in cupcakes to chooses from since mostly everything was sold out. So I opted for chocolate and the red velvet. They were both very good I love the frosting very light and not tooooo sweet. There is one thing though I did notice is that the cupcakes are on the smaller size...so you tend to have more frosting than cake. :(.
