We found this place on yelp, wanting to try a new Chinese restaurant. It was a little hard to find and from the outside looked like somewhere I would turn back and search for a new restaurant but we have it a shot. Walked in and it was uncomfortably quiet. It is decorated very authentic and looks like in its hey day was a great vibe! I really wanted to leave but didn't want to seem rude to the little old lady running the place. She was oddly rude and sweet at the same time if that makes sense. I flipped through the menu and landed on the black pepper beef and wife ordered won ton soup! We both joked about wanting to leave but didn't want to be rude! As waited it started he crowded and that put us at ease about the food not being as bad as it seemed it might be. The waitress brought the food out and I was amazed!! So glad we didn't leave!! That was some of the best Chinese food I've ever had and I've had it all over the world. The won ton soup was so flavorful and clean, just an absolute delight! The black pepper beef was to die for!! The beef so soft and flavorful and the bell peppers cooked but still a little crunchy and and the whole dish had this amazing hunt of fresh garlic! What a treat! If you can get past the location and the outdated ambience this is a must try! Honestly top 3 if not 1 Chinese food I've ever had!!!! If the restaurant was a little cleaner it would have been a five star for sure!

The food was very good and the owners are really nice. Everything came out fresh and hot. Tasty menu.

This a great family owned Chinese restaurant. It's in the ghetto and it is not fancy at all, but the food is flavorful, the portions are good, and prices are fair. Everything we ordered came out hot, fresh, and fast. I asked for my Kung Pao spicy and they delivered. My wife and were both pleased and we'd drive across town for it again. The restaurant itself is a little run down.

Have always loved the food, service and prices at this little hidden gem. Picked up an order of beef with Chinese greens! So delicious and packed with flavor!

I think the last time I have visited this place was over 20yrs ago and I remember this place being better than what I had recently encountered. I remember coming here with my mom for lunch several times as a kid and loving it, but on my recent visit the food was not what I had remembered it to be. We ordered tons of food and spent a lot since all 4 of us were super hungry that day. I remember I kept apologizing to my husband and kids for picking out the restaurant for that evening. Going in I expected the food to be fantastic and maybe that's where it went downhill from there. I was expecting it to be similar to other Chinese restaurants in town and I believe that the restaurant is older and a little outdated. What I mean by that is that, they are catering to a lot of customers that have been loyal to them for years and they haven't added that pizazz that the newer restaurants have. I think the cute little decorative flowers and swans that they make out of the foods is really creative and that is actually cool, but the food to me was just not what I expected. Then when it got to the entrees the food was just okay. My kids usually LOVE Chinese food and we definitely always have a lot of leftovers, but they did not really get seconds. The food is not horrible, but the food is not stupendous either. I'm happy I went back to revisit my memories with my mom for lunch; however, I was not impressed with the food and I do not see myself coming back. I did notice the owner talking to people and welcoming them back, so they do have a lot of loyal customers which is nice. She seemed really nice and talked to us for a little while, and every time we go out for dinner, my youngest son always wants to take a trip to the restroom, but my husband walked in and walked right back out and told my son that he needs to hold it til we get home because it was not pretty. The restaurant itself doesn't seem dirty, it's just older and needs to be updated.

I felt like I was in a movie eating here

I love the beautiful old world decor with the dark rich wood and the beautiful murals that they have kept as well. It's so nice to know one of Bakersfield's traditional restaurants has been kept in tact. Tony was our awesome server this evening. We each started with the tasty wonton soup. Warm and soothing with tender wantons & vegetables in as rich broth. We had the sweet and crunchy walnut shrimp, so mouthwatering! We also offered the dumplings in red sauce. My companion ordered the red sauce on the side. I actually prefer the dipping sauce. So we both got to have it our way. After we passed the homeless man drinking the green algae water outside, all was good from there. It was 102 degrees when we arrived, and soon as you walked in the delicious cold air hit us. This place is big! Perfect for big groups. We were greeted right away, and our drinks brought to us quickly There are so many options to choose from. I always love a good bowl of sizzling rice soup, so had to get that. My hubby ordered the spicy crispy beef, and I got the coconut shrimp. The crispy beef was so tender and amazing flavor. My shrimp wasn't white cream I expected on the top, it was a different color. I'm not sure why, but I didn't care it was delish. The portions are large, we will be eating the leftovers for a couple days. The owner was so nice, too. Don't let the outside fool you. Go check it out! 8/17/26

This time the son and I decided to dine in and the food was borderline spoiled, nothing tasted fresh and it wasn't hot, nor warm. Our food was borderline cold. The interior was dusty and in need of attention, especially the fake plants. Though spacious when we entered there wasn't a soul in the place, which was a red flag, but per usuh we brought people. I'm not sure if our food was so nasty because we ordered a lunch special and they reserve what's going bad for those orders because the other four families dining in didn't seem to be having the same experience. What saved this review from being a 1 star review and the only reason I didn't complain to the waitress about the quality of the food is because the only server was elderly and unable to pick up her feet and my very gracious son said to lig, so I did, but it appears if the couple who runs the restaurant doesn't get some help soon they may need to close their doors.

Being a frequent visitor to the best regions offered in SGV, I reluctantly yielded to lunch in Bakersfield on the way home from our road trip. We sat and perused the menu and I noticed the lack of dim sum on the appetizer menu so I asked. No, they don't have any dim sum. Bummer! I was looking forward to some shu mai, egg tarts and sesame rolls I had seen in Yelp photos. Ok, no worries. My friend likes sweet & sour and we both wanted fish, so we ordered S&S cod, dry rice noodle BBQ pork, chicken breast w/mushroom and a special, honey walnut shrimp. We agreed the BBQ w/rice noodle was yum, as was the chicken breast and mushroom. The cod was a BIG disappointment. All batter, no fish. Bummer! When I tried to get the breaded coating off the cod, it was stuck like glue and the cod seemed to disintegrate. The honey walnut shrimp was slightly better, but I wasn't use to the shrimp being breaded this much. I could tell it was a different coating from the cod and lighter, so it was easy to remove, which made me think they coat the shrimp themselves, but not the cod, which seemed pre-coated, possibly frozen, then deep fried. Shrimp coating aside, my friend and I found the honey walnut shrimp sugar sweet, not honey sweet. My friend tried and didn't like. I enjoyed the nice walnuts. All plates were generous portions so we had 4 boxes of leftovers. The cod went out with the bins as soon as I got home. The restaurant itself was traditional Chinese decor. Large fish tank with a very large fish and a story that they bought it when it was about 3", then discovered it could grow to accommodate its tank. Luckily, it isn't a cod! Bathroom was clean, but the horrific A/C noise came right in through the roof, making an uncomfortable pitch in my ears. My friend got what she requested and I got what I expected. Cheers! "CC"

Mama Lynn makes the best food ever! I think her cooking definitely plays a big part of my childhood and the reason why I love Chinese food, I always compare any other Chinese food to hers and hers always wins. I'm not gonna lie, I do miss the Ming location and the drive thru, but I get it... this new location looks a lot nicer and Maui Pho was not meant to be a drive thru restaurant since their restaurant isn't a fast food restaurant. I recently celebrated my birthday here and there was 9 of us and Maui Pho was able to take care of a big party. The restaurant inside is really nice, super clean and I absolutely love everything on the menu. I don't think I have eaten anything here that I did not like. They have combos if you're dining by yourself or if you're with friends/family and eating separately or they have family style items also. If you haven't come to visit their new location yet then you need to check it out. There's no issues with parking like when they were on Ming. If you're in a rush I wouldn't recommend this place because this is not a fast food restaurant, but if you do have time then please come because it's super delicious and worth the dine in experience.
