I have been craving good Chinese takeout ever since I moved to Bakersfield about three months ago. The Panda Express down the street just really wasn't cutting it. I oftentimes find myself scrolling through Groupon and just happened to see a Groupon for Ching Yen and thought I would give it a try! I arrived on a weeknight around 8pm with eight other people and the owner, who was waiting tables by herself, seated us with no issue. She even opened a separate room so that we could all sit together. Once we were seated, she brought us menus, ice water, and hot green tea (which was lovely). My friend and I decided to go with the Golden Dinner, which could feed a minimum of two people. It included an appetizer of spring rolls and cream cheese wontons, egg flower soup, garlic chicken, sweet and sour pork, and white rice. We decided to add an order of potstickers and Mandarin chow mein (chow mein with beef, chicken, and shrimp). We must have been super hungry because we ate every last bite, just the two of us! The food was excellent. I can't stress that enough. I don't typically like egg soups but the egg flower soup was delicious! It gave me the same feeling as if I were downing a giant bowl of hot chicken soup. It was very savory and comforting to eat. The appetizers were great as well, especially the potstickers. The sauce that went with them was the perfect addition! The Mandarin Chow Mein would have been better if it was hotter. However, the taste was still great. The sweet and sour pork was my favorite. It came with onions, peppers, and pineapple. The pork was hot and juicy and I could've eaten a whole plate of it by myself (and I'm not even a fan of pork)! The garlic chicken was pretty good but it wasn't my favorite. The only reason I didn't care for it was because I'm not a fan of water chestnuts and the dish was full of them. The service was great. The owner was a very nice, spunky older woman. She was quick on her feet and super attentive. We loved her! Our group ended our meal by discussing ghosts and Pokémon go with her. I will DEFINITELY be back. Ching Yen is now my favorite Chinese place in Bakersfield and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for great Chinese food. read more

Great food, prices good, I talk to the owner, and he prepares fresh cut vegetables and meats for the day. This restaurant is East Bakersfield best kept secret. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

I love the authenticity of this place. Listening to the staff talk in Chinese was awesome and the service is friendly, but would definitely not come in a rush. Great place to hang out and have a conversation while food is getting ready or watch Netflix. read more

I eat here recently for lunch. It was my first time here. It's not much to look at from the outside, and the inside is pretty worn. They have an extensive menu, and a few lunchtime offerings. I ended up having the combination lunch special which was $10.99. I have to say it was just OK. I have certainly had much better. It came with a spring roll and a Rangoon. Orange chicken and some kind of broccoli dish. Both were just okay. My favorite part or the noodles. It did not come with any type of rice. I probably won't go back. read more

Ching Yen - what happened? Yes, this place is dated. It's in an iffy part of town. And the front is painted hot pink. Everything about it is just odd - but that adds to it's character. What lacks in appearance is often made up in service and food. Not so, with Ching Yen. My last two visits over the course of 3 years were satisfactory. The service was always friendly and prompt. This last time was a totally different story. It was our grandfather's birthday, and Ching Yen is one of his favorite spots. Service was really odd. The waitress reminded me of prep school. We were firmly instructed to sit and look at the menus. She began to walk away without taking our drink orders. Something stopped her, she turned over her shoulder and asked rather sternly if we needed anything to drink? Puzzled, we all rattled off our drink orders (all water and one ice tea, nothing overly confusing). She then looked rather frustrated and muttered something like, "How am I supposed to know if you want something to drink if you don't ask?" --- ehhh??? At times the service was so bad it was comical. And to watch elderly folks become frustrated in tandem with the waitress was equally amusing. Eventually our food came. I'm not sure that what we ordered all showed up... still waiting on that sizzling rice soup. Most of it was not very memorable. For dessert we ordered the candy banana. It was pretty bad. The water wasn't iced so the sugary exterior was still goopy. Plus instead of dunking, she let them sit in the water. This made them really watery and not pleasant. The food was pretty subpar chinese. I've had much better, but unfortunately way worse. read more

Not a real fancy restaurant, but owned by a very nice couple. They are very attentive to their customers and remembers repeat customers. When we walk in we hear "same-o same-o" which is my husband's regular dinner order. Very prompt timing between entering and your dinner being served! We are VERY REPEAT customers. And sometimes when I'm not feeling up to dining out my husband will eat-in and bring me a take-out. Take outs are packed and ready as you walk out the door. Steaming hot when you are ready to eat. CHECK THIS LITTLE RESTAURANT, you'll enjoy! read more

We skipped out on Lam's to try this place. We of course had to order the sizzling rice soup due to all the reviews. I must say I didn't like it the first bite. I thought it was kind of bland. The more I ate it the more I enjoyed it. The crispy rice is definitely a good texture contrast in a soup that I'm not used to. I would order it again. We also ordered beef chow fun and mapo doufu. Both were just okay. I ordered the mapo doufu extra spicy and it wasn't very spicy at all. The noodles in the chow fun were also overcooked and gummy. The flavors were on the lighter side which isn't necessarily what you want when you get Chinese food. The service was very good. Very friendly and attentive. This place isn't bad but we left wishing we would have stuck with Lam's. Check it out for the sizzling rice soup, though. read more

Yeah...no. I had such high hopes because so many people said this was great food. What were they thinking? Have those folks ever actually had GOOD Chinese food? I am a cheap you know what, and I won't toss average food. I'll eat it all because there are starving kids somewhere, but this stuff, we just tossed. It was really bad. What I find shocking is that when I was in the restaurant picking up my food, there were so many people there eating and looking like they were enjoying the food. Weird. So I get home and we tear into the food and immediately wished we hadn't. It wasn't rotten, it wasn't cold, it wasn't the wrong order. It just wasn't good. Like how do you get Chinese to taste like cardboard? Seriously folks! So, I won't be back because the food was not good. But to add insult to injury, they charge a pretty good price for not so good food. I HATE paying top end prices for low end flavor. So... Ching Yen, I wish you luck. I just can't recommend your food in good conscience. It was a bad experience all around. I am totally surprised by all the people who love this place. Really. I don't get it at all. read more

Yay food is still delicious after 6years!! Its been a long while since I ate here obviously, but I was not yelping then so its time to give them their recognition. The set up is ma and pa homie feeling, you are greeted immediately seated with a friendly smile and the owner always thanks you for choosing to dine with them. Food scrumdilyumtious lol yes I created that but seriously food is very good, I'm very happy and satisfied after so long, that they are still providing great customer service and keeping the taste buds happy! read more

Really good authentic Chinese food from people who actually speak mandarin, (which does make a huge difference in the taste and quality.) I visit it at least once a month and never dissatisfied. The owners are very outgoing and have so many funny and interesting stories they are both a treat. I came here for my birthday lunch today. I thought the food was pretty good. It was fresh, super HOT and tasty. The service was lightening fast so if you're in a hurry, you'll be in and out quickly. There was a little rose garnish on our appetizer plate and it was absolutely adorable. I've never seen anything like it and it looked like it took a lot of effort to make. I also really liked the over the top Chinese decoration here including the Chinese ceiling tile. However it's not in the best neighborhood and I did not like the loud and startling "BONG!" noise that scared the crap out of me every time someone walked in the door. But I'd come back if I happened to be in the area and had a hankering for Chinese food. read more

Five stars not because it's the best Chinese food we've ever had, but because it's the best we know in Bakersfield. Fresh vegetables, good service, nice presentation. I came to this place because of the great reviews. Maybe I'm just spoiled with the Chinese food up north, but I don't think this place deserved so many fives. We ordered the mandarin salad, the beef lo mein, chicken fried rice, hot and sour soup, and kung pao chicken. Pro - Great prices Big portions Great services - super nice people. I was about to order the chow fun, but the waitress wouldn't let me order it because she said it was old. She didn't want to sell me old food. Cons - First off, the salad was not a salad, There was too much meat and it was warm which made the salad soggy. The pieces of meat were huge. I don't like have to chew up all that on my salad. The hot and sour soup was good to me because it wasn't very spicy and had enough sour at the end of it. There were a lot more vegetables than meat though. The chicken fried rice was very bland and needed soy sauce. The lo mein was good, but again too much meat. I want my carbs. The kung pao chicken had too many nuts and vegetables. Overall, the place is good when you need cheap quick food, but I wouldn't go here on a regular basis. read more

UPDATE: sadly I must change my rating because they did not advise customers they use high amounts of MSG and the results were massive trips to the border and swollen eyes. I guess this was the last time I'll eat here, pity because I really did like the food. OMG the food here is so good! It's authentic and fresh and it's a little hole in the wall. Don't let the exterior appearance deceive you. This place has lots of to go order's. I especially enjoyed the mandarin house chow me in (soft noodles) was excellent and the fried rice equally good. The food is good and you can taste that it's freshly cooked. Just be ready coz the food is so big as in big big serving. If I were u if ur ladies split one meal for two. This is, by far, the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten! We ordered six different items and they were all Equally terrible and flavorless. A complete waste of $87.00 read more

I used to love this place, I think they're using stale food because of slow business.

Ok- I give it 5 stars for food alone! For service I give it 3 stars and that's me being really nice. There is a culture gap here. The decor is great, the people are foreign- obviously a family run business. All the culture gaps are worth it IF you can just be patient and enjoy the food and the company you brought. If not, play a game on your phone or enjoy a beer. Dumplings are wonderful, lo mein is delicious, Mu Shu is outstanding, egg rolls.. all is so yummy - and FRESH! They have just made this food to order-just for you. Try and enjoy that and leave the complaining at home. read more

Service was a little slow given it was only two other people and my husband and I at first. Took a few minutes to get us menus and there were two ladies. My rating has nothing to do with location or ambience. I really wanted to like this place. It took a while for us to be noticed when we walked in. A Bakersfield classic! I've been here so many times that I have lost count. They've had the same to owners for as long as I remember. A husband and wife. If you get lucky you'll hear them arguing in their native language in the kitchen. It's absolutely hilarious and adds to the charm of this place. Tons of super flashy decorations all over the entire restaurant and ceiling. I actually love that a lot. The food is pretty damn good as well. My go-to dish is always the sizzling rice soup or the shrimp egg foo young. Both fantastic dishes that I highly recommend. If you get the shrimp egg foo young I strongly recommend getting the sauce on the side. It keeps the patties crispy when they come out. Also, each order of egg foo young is made to order so you will have to wait a bit. But it is worth it! They do everything old-school tableside here. She pours the rice into your soup and it actually starts crackling, if you get the moo shu pork she wraps the pork up in the little wraps right there in front of you. She will always box up your leftovers for you too. A cool spot that you should check out. I haven't explored much of the bed you because I found what I liked it stuck to it read more

My family has been coming here for over 20 years, its become somewhat of a family tradition. It's not in the best part of town and the alley ways are kind of ominous when parking but we've been parking there forever and nothing has ever happened to our cars. I'm also fairly certain they have a security camera to make sure nobody gets robbed. Susan, who we have known for over 20 years is always there and while she doesn't know great english she always makes sure we have a pleasant experience. She watched me grow up as I have been coming in since I was an infant with my mom and dad. The service isn't amazing, but I've been coming here for so long that I know what to expect. But I totally understand if some people find it a little lackluster. She is the only waitress and she does everything she can so knowing that I understand. We always get the sizzling rice soup with mandarin fried rice and chow mein. The sizzling rice soup is a must-have, if you go here you absolutely need to have it. It's a staple of this restaurant. The sampler platter is a great way of finding out what you like and includes some beef short ribs which are so amazing! For price, you are looking at about $10 per plate but you should probably eat it family style with each person picking something they want and sharing with everyone. Ching Yen should be a landmark for Bakersfield. It's more a part of this city than any other restaurant I know of. Whenever I'm asked about restaurants I always recommend this place and give some background on it. Go here and take my advice and you won't regret it. read more

Super delicious Chinese food! The food was so good and fresh! They gave us big portions to make sure we were full when we left! The presentation of the food was really awesome!
