Singapore Rice Noodles
Kirby D.

We visited Chinese Village often when we used to live in Reno. Now that we're back (after 10 years), really glad to find Chinese Village is still a solid choice. The restaurant is showing its age at this point, but still quiet and comfortable. The service has always been acceptable. Today, I ordered the Singapore Rice Noodles. One of my favorite dishes, I was curious how Chinese Village would prepare it. In a word, delicious. The noodles where flavorful and cooked properly. The curry taste was defined but not too strong. The dish was prepared with beef, shrimp and pork. I would definitely be re-ordering this dish.

A great location, but very mediocre Chinese food. They do offer some authentic cuisine off the menu, but I wasn't very impressed! The service is ok, and could be better. This place used to be good, hopefully they will get back on track soon.

I recommend the lunch special. There are good entree and side options and the portions are just right. The egg drop soup was very unique, and it also had corn in it. As my main course, I ordered the kung pao chicken with peppers and peanuts. It wasn't too spicy and a great flavor. I had the egg roll for the side. It was the only part of the meal I would have changed. The egg roll was a little greasy for my taste.

Chinese Village Restaurant seemed like a typical suburban strip mall Chinese American restaurant serving all the usual American faves and ubiquitous lunch specials that every Chinese restaurant serves. It's a pretty small hole in the wall look from the outside, squeezed in next to the bagel shop. The inside however, is much larger than the outside might indicate. The walls are decorated with European style paintings, reminding me of a French restaurant rather than a Chinese one. What brought me here was I read that they have an real authentic menu of Sichuan dishes with some of the pages of this menu all in Chinese, so you might have to get the staff to translate. I asked for this menu as I was seated. The server was the owner I think and her husband cooks in back. There was quite a selection of dishes, many that I'd not heard of before. Being by myself on this trip, I didn't want to order a bunch of food that I wasn't going to be able to finish. Chinese food is best enjoyed with a group ... bigger the better. I decided on the Dan Dan noodles ($8.95). When it was served, I was pleased with the presentation and the taste was wonderful. Full of subtle nuisances and a good texture to the noodles. I thought there might be a broth included, but they were served without. The flavor surprised me as I've had this dish before on big cities and this was the best I've had. Finishing the noodles, I was still a little hungry (it's a smallish portion). So I decided to try something I never had before. Off the regular lunch specials menu, I ordered the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce ($10.95). Served with fried rice and egg roll and egg flower soup. The soup was pretty standard as was the fried rice. No fancy fried rice with these lunch specials. The shrimps were a good size and covered in a white eggy sauce. I pictured that there might be more sauce, but it was just a coating. I knew there was no actual lobster in this dish, but still the shrimp tasted a little bland, could have used some MSG! I suppose it was a typical example of an Americanized Chinese dish. I'll say that the regular menu is pretty standard and will pass fine for mainstream tastes. I'd really be interested to come back and try some of the more authentic dishes off the Chinese menu, like that whole fish. Give the authentic Chinese menu a try, you might find some interesting delights there.

Had to do some shopping at Raleys, and it was almost lunch time. Called in while I was shopping. Ordered the cashew shrimp lunch and the schezuan egg plant with chow mein. Order would be ready in 25 min... Enjoyed the beautiful day looking at the snow peaked mountains.. Walked over and there was one table being used. Waited another ten minutes for the order. $19.92 for two lunch combos, included soup, and vegetable egg roll, fortune cookies (dogs love them).. Better than expected and will certainly try another lunch in the future.. just order ahead.. or be prepared to wait. Glad I stopped and ordered.

We wanted to try something new on Friday night, so we hit up Chinese Village on Wedge Parkway. Pretty impressed with everything. Very nice tables, booths, tablecloths, napkins, you name it. Hand sanitizer on the tables, and the staff and service was rocking! General's Chicken is a bit differrent than most places, more spicy and savory using dark meat. I thoroughly enjoyed it and think it belongs at #2 for the area. I cleaned the plate. That was daaaayaaaamn good! Elizabeth enjoyed the Lemon Chicken (I did as well) and we both liked the Po Po Platter. Potstickers and Crab Rangoon were pure A game, the Rangoon also has a different prep than you might be used to. The eggrolls were also great, but be carefull with the hot mustard sauce, it will kick hard! We also split a combo fried rice which was delicious. 1st impressions are important, and they nailed it. Also, they were doing a metric ton of takeout, so the secret is out!

Great lunch combo for 7.95. Especially when you want to grab and go.

Stopped in Raleys for some groceries and Leroys sauce that you can only find at Raleys and SaveMart. My son eats it on everything. Decided to call in and in a take out order lunch combo. I ordered Szechuan chicken that comes with fried rice and you get a choice of egg roll or crab Rangoon and egg flower soup or hot n sour. I got the egg flower soup and it was super good! Not watery, nice consistency and great taste. The Szechuan chicken was delicious and spicy! Great lunch combo for $7.95 and was pleased with my takeout lunch. It's not gourmet Chinese but it sure hit the spot!

I've read the reviews and I still decided to try this place. I am thinking that possibly it depends on what you order from here. 1) shrimp chow mein ( 3/5 ) not as flavorful as I would like but still good. 2) veggie egg rolls (5/5) bomb! 3) service (5/5) very nice and timely ! I called in first and picked up my order. No complaints with their service. Next time I will try their rice and a separate dish.

The portions were generous with plenty of leftovers to pack up in takeout boxes for enjoying for another day. My favorite three were the ahi tuna, the black cod and the brilliant asian/french mash up of red Bean Creme Brulee. I also need to mention, I loved the lamb tenderloin. I am not a big lamb fan, but this New Zealand lamb was tender and non-gamey. The owners did an outstanding job of timing the dishes and engaging with our group while also taking care of other diners including non event patrons getting getting take-out and inhouse menu dining. The space is very small, but even with and almost full house, it didn't feel cramped. Even though Kwok's is right across the street from where I live, this restaurant would be at the top of my list of "I would drive out of my way to eat here"

To start, you can't go wrong with the enthusiastic welcome we always receive. Then quickly seated and wine poured. The 2026 CNY menu was fabulous, with some great surprises. The ahi tartare portion anywhere else would have been a shareable appetizer. But each person was served a large portion of delicious fresh ahi. Mmmm this course and a glass of wine could be dinner alone any other evening. The soft creamy rich egg custard was hidden under a thick seafood gravy. I really enjoyed this unique dish. The miso black cod is always flaky and delicious. And the crab fried rice it's nestled on also never disappoints. The rich New Zealand stir fried lamb and shiitake mushrooms over pea shoots was a fabulous hearty dish on this chilly March evening. The braised short ribs were so tender no knife was needed, they flaked apart with the fork. And the e mein noodles were perfectly al dente. The dinner wrapped up with a crème brûlée that only Kwok's could pull off - red bean. Creamy smooth. Not overwhelming. The perfect burnt sugar layer on top. The regular menu is just as delicious. Small inside seating area, so recommend always make a reservation. In the summer there's a fabulous patio area out front. Limited street parking.

Unfortunately, the flavors were quite different from what I expected. The food wasn't bad, but it tasted different from what I'm used to. The popcorn chicken was more on the sweet side rather than savory. The fried rice was okay but not very flavorful. The zha jiang mian was also sweeter than expected. Usually the ones I've had in Asia are very savory. I've even had zha jiang mian in Alameda, California, and that version was savory, not sweet at all. At one point my husband even wondered if they might have accidentally used sugar instead of salt. The mapo tofu was also a bit too sweet. The best one was the beef noodle soup. That was 7/10 it was my favorite out of all. In general, we didn't enjoy the food very much. The service was okay. I understand they were very busy, so it's understandable. In case you're not aware, though the name of this restaurant references a specific city in northern China and the menu has dishes from across the country, their specialty is the spicy and numbing cuisine of the Sichuan region. If you've never had this before, when you see dishes listed as spicy, they may be very different from what you're thinking. It's certainly can be a polarizing experience, with many loving this flavor and many not into it at all, but the broad menu makes this a great call for everyone. Now I love dining with others who are familiar because it lets you explore the menu through their eyes and enjoy selections made by others with taste diverse from yours. My friend picked several dishes I would've never noticed or ordered blindly this time, and I'm so happy about that. We enjoyed the cold Woodear or black fungus in chili oil, classic snow pea tips with garlic, as well as the quintessential Sichuan cumin lamb, but the other three dishes we had were 100% new to me. Those included Sichuan snails (unshelled in an oily spicy stir fry), scallops with garlic and vermicelli, and crispy spicy intestines. The snails were a win. These are small and somewhat chewy morsels that get wok fried with fried chili, chili oil, peppers and onions. The texture is similar to sautéed calamari, but a bit firmer, and the sauce coats everything with that signature numbing heat. The scallops were the big miss. This dish typically comes in the half shell with fresh scallops, but here they're using a lower quality scallop (likely frozen) and a lot of pre-minced garlic (like you'd find in a jar). It looks impressive but the scallops had absolutely not flavor and the texture was rubbery too. Skip this one for sure. The intestines were the surprise. I've had fried intestines and they crunch like a chip and have no distinct flavor that lets you know what you're eating. These were sliced on the bias and wok tossed until super crispy on the outside with a delicately chewy interior. The sauce really amplified the flavor and this all made for a great bite within the whole meal. All in all, this is a home run. If you haven't been, I urge you to check it out, as it's one of the best authentic Chinese restaurants around.

Tucked away in the back of an unassuming shopping mall is Chinese cuisine well worth making a trip for. I was immediately greeted when I entered, and started with some hot tea. The intestines came out crispy and piled high with red fried chilis and szechuan peppercorns. I am a huge spice nut and this absolutely hit the spot! (If you have a low spice tolerance you may want to ask for less spicy as the server did not ask how spicy I wanted it). The cucumbers were the perfect accompaniment to balance the heat and numbing from the chilis. When I first looked at the menu, I thought the prices were a bit high. After seeing the enormous portion sizes, it all made perfect sense. There was easily enough for 2 full meals for me (245lb, 6ft3in man with an appetite). The portions are clearly designed to be shared. On that point they also feature traditional Chinese style banquet seating with the lazy suzan in the middle for family style eating. All told I was extremely impressed with the food quality, service, portion sizes and ambiance. I will absolutely be adding Shanghai Bistro to my regular rotation!

We decided to make it our next date night spot. We went on a Friday around 5:30 and it wasn't very crowded yet. They asked if we preferred a table or a booth, and we went with a booth near the front. The restaurant itself is really nice, but I'll say the booth felt a little tight. Next time, we'll probably go with a table for a bit more space. The service was top notch. The staff was incredibly attentive, and our drinks were constantly refilled. Our glasses were never empty, which always stands out. About 15 minutes after we sat down, the place filled up fast. It seemed like most people coming in had reservations, so I'd definitely recommend making one if you're planning to go after 6 pm. We decided on the Shanghai Dinner. I ordered the sweet and sour pork, and my wife got the sweet and sour chicken. I was tempted by the cashew chicken and kung pao chicken, but we'll save those for next time. The appetizers were amazing. The meal comes with spring rolls, crab rangoon, paper wrapped chicken, and honey glazed BBQ spareribs. Everything was delicious. My wife loved the paper wrapped chicken, and for me, the ribs were the standout. They were tender with just the right hint of sweetness. Honestly, I could've eaten a full plate of just those and been happy. For sides, I had the egg flower soup, which was really flavorful, and my wife had the salad. She could not stop talking about how good the dressing was. Both the sweet and sour pork and chicken were great. The sauce had that perfect tangy, slightly sweet flavor. That said, next time we probably won't order the same sauce for both dishes. I think pairing something like sweet and sour with kung pao would give a better balance with a little heat to cut through the sweetness. Overall, this place is a winner. Great food, solid portions, and the price is very reasonable at about $33 per person for the Shanghai Dinner. My wife enjoyed everything so much that after seeing another table order the duck, she's already talking about coming back to try it.
