I walked in around 7:45 p.m. on a Saturday night and there was only one other person in line. That should've been the first red flag. Then, I was shocked at all of the premade items (i.e. plain fried rice, shrimp fried rice, egg rolls, sesame chicken, etc.) behind the case. This was the second red flag. Nevertheless, I waited in line to place my order. There was a gentleman in front of me reviewing the menu and not sure of what to order, so I politely asked the cashier if I could place my order while the other customer was still deciding. He told me, "No," and made me wait until the other guy made up his mind. I thought this was quite rude but remained calm and continued to wait. I ordered the shrimp egg foo yung and it was burnt, dry, and clearly premade. There was no steam/heat/burn marks inside of the styrofoam box and it was ready very quickly. I'm not sure why anyone would precook their menu, but I won't be back. Not only is the cashier RUDE, but the food is very disappointing. I won't be back. One my favorite takeout spots during the work week. Priced fairly with high quality food, the menu is expansive including veggie options. I usually get the General Tso's Tofu - comes with white rice (brown is +$1). The portion is hefty, something I have to struggle to finish in one sitting. I usually eat it twice that day while working. The vegetable soup and lo-mein are both delicious as well. The shop is small but they have a couple seats to sit while you wait. The staff is friendly whenever I go in. If you want to add anything or make a change they go with it. The bag is always full of soy sauce and fortune cookies, and I always leave to the employees thanking me for coming in. The bonus is in the online ordering. When I tried to order one, however, the counter person seemed flummoxed that I did not select one of the numbered dishes. Therefore, I settled on the only veg numbered plate: sauteed mixed vegetables. Despite its name, express can be a relative term here, even when ordering by number. The cafeteria appearance of a row of chafing dishes belies that many meals are made upon order (a pleasant surprise, actually). My lunch was serviceable if not sensational: decent, crisp veggies in a standard white sauce, middling fried-cum-steamed rice and a mildly tasty, albeit overly cabbage-laden, spring roll. I came from China many years ago. I work in Southfield one day out of the week. I usually would skip places that only non-Asian Americans frequent - I never saw any other Chinese customers that came in here. However, I used to come here once a week on days that I work in my office in the neighborhood (but honestly have not been coming for a while due to busy schedule; I have another office in another city). I guess I like the flavors of many of the dishes here. It could be because there are many dishes that Americans could not name, therefore, in my opinion, not that Americanized. In other words, it would cater to the liking of a person of Chinese origin that likes stir-fried dishes with plenty of vegetables and good amount of meat or seafood. Nonetheless, this could be the very reason that many reviewers did not rate it very high - not the kind of food they could name and are used to? The dishes are in very generous quantity too. This is a hidden gem my parents found by accident over ten years ago. Although we have moved from their delivery area I still try to visit a couple times a month. Always very good. I especially like the pan fried dumplings and the General Tso's chicken. Won ton soup and shrimp in lobster sauce are also family favorites.
