When we walked in, abt 1pm for lunch there was a kid in a high chair screaming & not wanting to eat, we learned later that she was the daughter abt 2 or 3 yrs old. This place has 3 tables for customers & the table for the family w/the high chair. We had to go to the counter to order & the food was sub par! The pork fried rice had no flavor with alot of pieces of chopped onion & dried up pieces of pork. The rice was very dry, the short ribs were dru & the beef broccoli was way under cooked with the beef being raw & the broccoli being hard & barely cooked. The sweet & sour chicken seemed like chicken nuggets with alot of sauce. I prob won't be going there again. Might be five stars if the fried rice was better cooked and not so oily. Plus be sure to check your order before you leave to make sure everything you paid for is in the bag. It's inconvenient to do this, I know, especially with a large order, but apparently necessary. So disappointing to get home to find that someone won't be getting their meal. read more

Solid old school Chinese food. Nothing overly special but hit the mark. I really like their eggrolls, which are not very greasy. Same with the crab Rangoon. The Chinese pork was a little overcooked, but it was really sticky and chewy, which is how I like it so I was good with that. Also like the homemade duck sauce. Prices are reasonable and it is conveniently located on Washington Avenue with parking. read more

By far the best Chinese food between Freeport, Yarmouth, Falmouth and the Portland area! So I have been craving good Chinese food and after trying many other places closer to me: China Taste in Yarmouth, Little China Express and China Rose (Freeport) none have come close to China Taste on Washington St in Portland. The other places food quality is poor, mushy fried rice, greasy and bland chicken dishes, bland with no flavor and overpriced. As a native NJ/NY and my college roommate's entire family owned Chinese restaurants in NJ, NY and Washington, DC... let me tell you I know and have had great Chinese food. I was still a little skeptical to try this place and am glad I opted to read the other reviews and started off with some basic staples pork fried rice, egg drop wonton soup, and beef lo mein. The fried rice = tasty and not greasy, it could use some green peas, carrots, sprouts and some eggs but inflation, supply chain, etc you name it it's understandable that it's not in there but still rice was well cooked and not mushy or greasy with plenty of roasted pork and well seasoned so I actually didn't even throw on soy sauce on it. Egg drop wonton soup = great and even got 3 wontons in the small portion. Beef lo mein = had tender and plenty of beef, a plenty of sauce but it was a little more oily than I would have liked but again compared to what I have tried in other places this restaurant is far better. Definitely give it a try. The workers are sweet and friendly. read more

3 stars seems about right. Standard Chinese take out food. There is a small 3 table dining area but it's usually empty. I usually come for the lunch special menu which is good until 3 o'clock. Specials come with pork fried rice and a soup. The wonton soup is pretty solid. If you are in the neighborhood and looking for a quick reasonably priced lunch, this isn't bad. read more

Solid take out Chinese food. Prices--like at all take places--have taken a big jump this year but portions are generous. Our family particularly likes the vegetable mei fun--delicate flavor, tender thin noodles and easy on the oil. It's a nice light dish. Soups like hot and sour are consistently good. read more

Pretty solid American-iced Chinese food. I used to order from Valley Chinese, but since they closed it's been hard to find a good quality Chinese food takeout place I can rely on. China Taste is reliable, their food always tastes good each time I order, and it is affordable. Is it the best Chinese food? No. But it sure beats paying $100+ at any other place in Portland for what we can get here for $45-50. Their soups are really tasty, and their dinner combinations are plentiful. I typically can squeeze two meals out of one, honestly, they give you so much food! I'm partial to the Wonton Soup, but their Hot & Sour is pretty good too. They offer delivery, but we usually pick up, so I can't speak to that service. Overall, solid Chinese take out. read more

I guess I still have to give them credit for getting the food out in a timely manner, but I think I have to stop defending this place. It's not terrible but my last order here was the worst I ever had, so not trending in the right direction either! All of their fried rice dishes are pretty dry and tasteless so without lots of your favorite sauce barely edible. My friend wanted boneless ribs which I've never ordered and beg you to never order yourself! They were like eating rebar, hard and chewy sticks of some kind of meat I think? Crab Rangoon was good as usual, so not a total loss. Historically some of their more traditional dishes have been pretty good so since they're close to home I won't toss them out completely, but just wish they were a little better. read more

Having ordered delivery 3 times within the past month, I can confirm they're consistently fine. Their food is fresh, hot and delivered in about 20 minutes. ( even though they guesstimated 30-40 minutes so be ready) I had the old standards: chicken chow mein, pork fried rice, egg foo young , chicken wings, spare ribs and chicken with cashew nuts. They were all wonderful. The chicken chow mein vegetables and chicken were good size chunks in a light sauce. The chicken with cashew nut was very flavorful. The spices on the chicken wings came through clearly. I highly recommend China Taste. read more

What can i say about this place? The reviews were right but stubborn me still wanted to give them a chance. Walked in here during lunch and it was empty (first red flag). It's a very small place and it is not welcoming to eat in. Ordered from the lunch special and regretted my decision as I was eating. The spicy chicken was not surprise, spicy. It was diced chicken in brown sauce. I think it had been done in the morning (hoping that is true) because parts of it was cold. The fried rice was meh. Favorite dumplings in town! The general Tsos and spare ribs were good. Dinner combos are well priced and tasty! I am a big fan of cashew chicken and theirs wasn't bad but not my favorite. Still all super good and will come back for these dumplings - specifically steamed pork dumplings. I'm a #1 dumpling fan. They are chewy and fluffy, and the dumpling meat has good flavor. read more

I ordered a #9, Szechuan chicken and crab rangoon with pork fried rice. I ordered inside for take-out and the woman in the front was friendly and the service was scarily fast. Usually my favorite Szechuan dish would be beef, but I am weary of where I order beef because it is often very cheap and rubbery. I thought I'd be safe with the chicken. Nope, it was cheap and very rubbery. The pork fried rice is yellow, but it tasted ok..until I found a hair in it. It came with 3 crab rangoon. There were no specks of crab (real or imitation) and they were just barely filled with watery cream cheese and scallions. The dinners also come with a choice of soup. I'm probably not going to eat it and I put it in the fridge to die. My meal came to $11.75 with tax. Pricey for food that I just took a few bites of and then promptly threw in the trash. read more

Well I've heard it all now. First of all this place is barely edible . But sadly the only game in town near work for Chinese and Ive learned to live with it. There are two palatable items on the menu, one is egg foo young (#5 lunch combo) Comes with Wings, rice and soup The substitution to boneless ribs is $2 , seems excessive but OK Ill have wonton for the soup. That will be 50 cents....(this is after I paid) Soup is part of the combo yes? Yes soup is free but the container is 50 cents, if you bring your own container its nothing. Having nothing to put soup in with me at the time, I paid the 50 cents. I already hate this place so much, but this is the end. I urge you to stop frequenting this horrible place. Very small place, and is easy to miss. My boyfriend and I ordered some take out and a few things were hits while others were definite misses. First of all, their dumplings are very good- a bit doughy and oily but I couldn't get enough of them. Their combos were a good portion for their price with friend rice, crab ragoons, and chicken stir fry. The friend rice was really dry so I dumped it in the chicken stir fry to give it some moisture (didn't really help but it tasted better that way). The crab ragoons were really soggy but the filling was very tasty. But all in all, the total came out to about $30 for two combos, dumplings, and 2 wonton soups- not bad for the amount of food that was given but I guess I'd spend a bit more for better quality. read more

Ok, it's not out of this world but it is good. We've gotten takeout a number of times and consistently have enjoyed our meals. I really like the dinner combos, plenty for leftovers the next day. The egg drop soup could use a bit of a boost but with a bit of soy sauce and pepper it's ok. One huge plus...they're quick! We phoned in a sizable order and it was ready quickly! Ordered several lunch platters from China Taste that were well priced considering the amount of food that you get (fried rice, soup, etc.). This is definitely a good place to visit if you are looking for yummy food that is fast and familiar. Be sure to ask about food contents if anyone in your party has allergies (i.e. shrimp in spring rolls). The contact-less pick up was reassuring as well during the pandemic. read more

It's a really small place not much dining in space. I suspect that they mostly do take out. I usually get the pu-pu platter for one, pan fried dumplings and crab rangoons. There's enough for 2 meals. I want to give China Taste four stars, I really do. BUT a hair in the sweet n' sour sauce on our recent order means that I really can only go up as far as three stars. But if not for that unwanted hair in the food (yikes!) I would have given this place four stars. I'm going to be real with you - my idea of good Chinese food is FRIED everything. And I have had quite a lot of it over the years. China Taste does not disappoint in this regard - they know their way around a fryer. If you're looking for authentic Chinese, first of all remember: you are in Maine. We don't do authentic Chinese. (No, Empire is NOT authentic.) Go to Boston or NYC for real Chinese food - here in Maine it's all about the Pu Pu Platter. But if like me you're feeling the void left by the closure (I think! The phone is disconnected) of Yan Mee, give China Taste a try. AND they do coupons. So get a coupon before you call - free fried rice or $5 off, not bad! read more

WARNING: We saw them bring live chickens into their restaurant and saw them laying on the floor! If there was less than a one star that's what I would rate this. The people are rude and inconsiderate. We have gone over and over giving them chance but are still very rude. Do you know what one of the worst parts of moving to a new city is? Not knowing where to order Chinese food delivery. Thankfully we found China Taste! Our first attempt at finding a place for Chinese food delivery wasn't great (I don't remember which place it was), so we decided to try out China Taste. After a night of New Years Eve drinking, I really wanted pork fried rice. Don't ask me why...I just really wanted it. It was super easy to order over the phone (only on hold for 15 seconds) and it only took approximately 30 minutes to deliver. The delivery man was very friendly and the food arrived piping hot. The pork fried rice and egg rolls did not disappoint! My husband's hunan beef was tasty as well (even if it wasn't actually spicy). For takeout Chinese, this was perfect! I'm never expecting gourmet or even authentic Chinese for these types of nights...so I'm happy to say we found our new Chinese delivery restaurant! I can check that off my list! Also, BONUS! The pork fried rice came in one of those classic Chinese takeout boxes. I know it's silly...but most places don't use those boxes anymore and whenever I see an episode of Big Bang Theory, I just want to eat out of one of those boxes. read more

The best Chinese I have had in Portland, and I have been searching. I havent tried a whole host of dishes, but usually judge a place by my personal stand-bys: Pork Fried Rice, Vegetable Lo Mein, boneless spare rib and crab rangoon. Most Pork Fried rice, part of the proverbial combo dinner, is usually an afterthought, just salty, greasy, with a minimum of meat and veggies. Not the case here, the roast pork was in fairly large pieces, the flavors were nice, complex, and it was not greasy. The Lo Mein was also not greasy. I loved eating it the next day too, it really held up well. The spare rib was pretty standard, not very many overly fatty pieces, and the rangoons weere pillowy goodness. Reasonable prices. Delivery was quick by a lovely older gentleman who actually had a kid in the back seat, so this must be a true family operation. I will be using it exclusively for my Chinese food cravings. read more

I hate to knock a small family business (which this appears to be), but I can tell that they could do much better if they wanted to. The ingredients are simply lacking (the stir fry dishes, for example, lack diversity of ingredients) and everything just seems a bit mushy and overcooked. It's quite expensive, to boot. It genuinely seems like they are trying to see how far they can raise prices while lowering ingredient quality before they get caught. Sorry, China Taste, but we can tell. read more
