After having lived outside San Francisco for over a decade and visiting China Town several times for outstanding Chinese food, we just couldn't find anything close in southern Maine. That's until Mrs. Coot and I visited China Village on the recommendation of our neighbor. We were blown away with the quality, flavor, and service. The menu is extensive with a lot of variety. Both of us started with Mai Tais, which were fantastic. We ordered a PuPu Platter and had intended to order meals but the Platter was HUGE! Everything was cooked to perfection, the egg rolls, chicken wings, beef teriyaki, fried shrimp, boneless ribs, etc. All prepared well with tremendous flavor. I also need to say that the service was excellent, and everyone was very friendly. We I'd put China Village up against any SF Chinatown restaurant anytime. This is a basic Chinese restaurant-and really good, tasty food! I have a few things I like (again, color me basic food!) and loved the egg roll! Not greasy at all. I also totally enjoyed the fried dumplings - I was surprised that they were deep fried rather than pan seared - but really tasty and the dumpling sauce was just right! Wayne had a combo plate -moo gai pan, pork fried rice, egg roll and spare ribs. Enough for dinner tomorrow! The general's chicken was probably the best general's chicken I've ever had and I was so happy that they had house hot tea! Great food and friendly service! We stopped here after a series of GPS mishaps, but we were very happy to find this was a hidden gem. The crab rangoons were very full with a tasty filling (12 in the order for $15) and worth it! We had a half there and half came home for later. My partner ate 4 cold and I heated 2 up in our air fryer and we both thought they were still excellent several-hours-in-the-fridge later Since we arrived around 2pm, they gave us a choice of the lunch menu (ends at 3pm) or the dinner menu. Partner had the general's chicken dinner combo with egg roll, chicken fingers, and pork fried rice; it was a very generous portion. I had the sweet and sour chicken dinner combination with 2 chicken teriyaki sticks, boneless ribs, and pork fried rice. They even offered to have the sweet and sour sauce on the side, which I did. Delicious food! The rice was soft and fresh with generous amounts of pork and well-balanced flavor. The chicken fingers were in the usual crispy golden batter over large tender chunks of white meat chicken. His egg roll was delightful (he didn't even save me a bite haha). The sweet and sour sauce was perfect and included the pineapple and cherries, even on the side, which has not always been the case when I've had side sauce for this before. The teriyaki is thinly sliced, but remained juicy and tender, not always how those turn out, but they did it right. The standout item on my plate was the boneless ribs! Wow! So tender, very juicy, and marinated with the red Ah-So style sauce. Absolutely delicious! I have not had boneless ribs that fantastic in literal years They offered free pots of hot tea or water, plus soft drinks and full bar drinks at various prices. All together with tax we spent about $47 and each had enough for a second meal later. Good value and great food and service is the only way to say it! read more

I really hate to do this but I think it's important for people to know what they're paying for. We ordered: 1 egg drop soup, 1 pork fried rice, 1 beef lo mein, and 1 sesame chicken. This was $60 total. The only reason for the 1 star is because of the lovely woman who took our order over the phone. This was for pick up. I am not exaggerating when I say that this was the worst Chinese food that we (two people with two completely different experiences with Chinese food) have ever had. There was legitimately zero flavor and it is honestly shocking that this was the case but it was truly so bland that I had to personally "refry" the fried rice myself and add ingredients to make it better. I did consider calling and requesting at least a partial refund, but I didn't end up doing that because I felt bad (not sure that leaving a yelp review is much better, though I do think it's important for people to know what they're about to pay for). I really hope that they can step it up here because I DO think this place has some potential to be good, they just need chefs that care about providing good food and experience. read more

The service was great. Lady with dreadlocks was so upbeat. They seated us right away. I've actually never been to a Chinese Restaurant with such a menu. It's definitely not real Chinese cuisine but the white persons version. I had to ask what chop suet was. The chow mein was laughable. The other customers seem to love it. But if you want real Chinese food this isn't it. I don't know what they do with the chicken but the texture was weird. Also, everything was kinda expensive. But judging from the customers they didn't seem to think so. It was Monday and it was fairly big crowd. Especially for a pandemic. So if you're into chop suey and crab Rangoon go for it. Ordered takeout recently and determined this place isn't what I thought it used to be. We got 2 dinner combination plates, crab rangoon and a side of sweet and sour sauce. The whole thing came to almost $40 and lacked sauced overall. Specifically the spare ribs, which normally have a ton of finger licking good red sweet sauce on them, we're very dry- as were the beef on a stick. You get huge portions and the food is pretty good. I got the moo shi chicken and my boyfriend got the schezuan chicken. Mine was very flavorful and my boyfriend liked his although it could have been spicier as indicated on the menu and he added some of my hoisin sauce to his. The dumplings were pretty good but the dipping sauce was not very flavorful. We also ordered a small chicken chow Meir and were confused because it was chicken and veggies with a package of fried noodles on the side not the typical chicken chow mein we are used to. This is your typical American Chinese food place. It's greasy, sweet, salty and hits all the right points when you're in the mood. I actually like that their crab rangoons have little bits of (imitation, obviously) crab rather than the cheaper places that just have cream cheese and crab flavoring. So I drove to Gray for Chinese food. Cuz that's what you do on a snowy Monday night. Right? A friend had said it was "the best Chinese food in Maine" (definitely a solid choice) and "get the Crab Rangoon" (they were really good). We also had spring rolls and the teriyaki beef appetizer (very tasty). The spring rolls were quite long and one of the women at the table kept saying that she'd never seen them that big - to the point of it starting to become a bit uncomfortable. Also funny - when I came in and asked for a table, the host was caught off-guard because she was expecting me to take a pickup order. No one else was seated but we were a bit early. Several other groups came in while we dined - but a lot of people had ordered to go. The people who worked there were all friendly and had a great sense of humor. The menu had a good selection and all the food was very fresh(ly made). The house special rice was delicious and so was the Chicago chicken chow mein. My Szechuan beef was decent but I had hoped it would be a little better. I probably should have got the General or Orange Chicken. But overall, a nice experience. read more

I have been passing by the China Village Restaurant on my way to and from work and decides to give the place a try for a late dinner. I arrived at 8:30pm and was immediately greeted by the hostess who quickly asked me if I was dining in, picking up or ordering. I told her I was ordering and I grabbed a take out menu that was conveniently located right next to the counter. The menu was a typical Chinese menu with lots of choices and because I was familiar with them I turned to the back and ordered a D1 which consisted of an egg roll, beef teriyaki, chicken wings and fried rice. The food was delicious! The beef teriyaki had a wonderful sweet taste ans was so tender it melted in your mouth. The rivmce was cooked perfectly and when i added just the right combination of Duck Sauce and Hot Mustard it blended to perfection. The Chicken Wings were also a great complement to the meal. The fried Egg Roll was different than i had experienced. It was longer and thinner. None the less, it was filled with the flavors i always rememberes. I was quite surprised to find a couple of staffers smoking in the front of the restaurant. I guess I am a bit old fashion and feel that smoking right in the front of the restaurant doesn't send a warm inviting message. read more

We decided on Chinese on a whim on the second day of our Maine trip. It kind of when like this "Hey you guys want chinese?" and it was decided after debating on what to eat for a few hours. No, I'm not joking. We ordered takeout. I got Chicken lo mien and chicken teriyaki sticks. I really enjoyed the teriyaki sticks and thought the lo mien was pretty good but the flavor of the sauce could have been a bit better. It was a very large amount of food to eat, there were a lot of leftovers for what I ordered! My SO ate all his food, I was impressed, He really likes this place since he is a very picky Chinese food eater. Lunch at a Chinese chow mein restaurant. What could go wrong? A lot, it turns out. Saturday afternoon, I asked my husband Steve and girlfriend Lyn to join me for lunch at China Village in Gray. I wanted a bowl of hot and sour soup. Our tall, inked server gal brought my soup. I dipped in my spoon. The consistency was watery, with few ingredients. The broth tasted of...sugar. That was it. Ugh. No hot. No sour. No nothing. When I could catch her attention, I told the server. She whisked it away. Steve's wonton soup looked better, had plenty of vegetables, pork and dumplings. But he kept pouring soy sauce into the broth, saying it had no taste. He didn't finish it. For his main dish, he ordered szechuan pork. She brought him a plate of szechuan chicken. He complained to me, ate the pork fried rice accompaniment, left the rest. Eventually, he told the server when she zipped by that he received the wrong order. "Sorry," she said and took away his plate, still full of food. She charged him full price for it. Both Lyn and I ordered moo goo gai pan from the lunch menu. It came with the ubiquitous pork fried rice plus fried chicken wings. I told the server to leave the bulbous wings off my plate. The moo goo gai pan was tasteless. A little soy sauce helped, but not much. After a few bites of chicken, the food ceased to be appealing. Out of hunger, I ate the fried rice, the pieces of broccoli, carrot and bok choy, but left most of the chicken uneaten. The server, operating by rote, didn't care that she gave my husband the wrong order or that my soup was awful. None of us finished our meals. "Want boxes?," the server asked on one of her forays past our table. We did not. The bill came to $28. We left and headed to B&R Dairy Bar for ice cream, happy to leave our mediocre meals at China Village behind. Note: I mostly stopped eating here years ago when they forgot to place paid-for egg rolls in my carryout bag, then refused to make it up to me. It's that attitude. Skip China Village if you want more from your food than a full tummy; if you want more flavorful, imaginative or authentic Chinese food; if you want a dish with, say, tofu in it. read more

Country music playing and the decor was down right awful. The service was good. I asked the server advice on where to watch the game...told me of this great place down the street. Now for the food. It was still lunch time so we ordered from the lunch combo menu. I decided on beef and mushrooms with pork fried rice. It wasn't bad but wasn't great. Very blah...not a whole lot going on with it. We really go out of our way to support local restaurants, so based on all the rave reviews from Mainers, we ordered China Village takeout. The entire family had a laugh, mainly laughing at the reviews that lured us to this place. This is your grandmother's 1950s image of "Chinese food". The spiciest item was probably the salt and pepper. Wonton soup tasting like vegetable broth, chicken lo mein tasting like chicken noodle soup, Szechuan "hot and spicy" pork that was about as spicy as your mom's mashed potatoes. Fried pork dumplings with an emphasis on dumpling. Really, do people drive 30 minutes to go to this place? They could greatly reduce their menu (get rid of the chop suey dishes!) and focus on authentic Chinese cooking. Unless that is not allowed in this part of Maine. read more
