    twice cooked pork
    Peggy X.

I've been here three times now, and have had lovely experiences each time. It also has the stamp of approval from my mom, who is Sichuan-born and raised! The restaurant interior is airy, clean, and welcoming. The service is always warm and efficient. And we were pleasantly surprised to see some classic Sichuanese dishes (Tian Shui Noodles, Angus Beef with Sichuan Pickled Chilis) that you don't always see in the States. Dishes we'd recommend: the mapo tofu, cucumber salad, and angus beef. The fish with pickled greens and green beens are also very good. I'd skip the Tian Shui Noodles, and though the twice-cooked pork was well made, it didn't have any spice at all and a bit too much sugar, which wasn't to my taste. Generally, the food had more numbing spice than fiery spice -- perhaps good for a non-Sichuanese palate, but I definitely wish the dishes were hotter. Around dinnertime, there's usually a ~30-minute wait, and I don't think the restaurant takes reservations, so I'd plan around that. Overall: I'll definitely be back! This is a solid Sichuanese spot, especially in Portland, which -- for all of its good food -- is quite lacking in Chinese cuisine.

    Tian Shui noodles!!

Today was my daughter's 20th birthday and she chose to spend it here! The restaurant is cozy, small and intimate. Giant paper lanterns adorn the ceiling. It was a cold February evening, but this place was warm! It felt very comfortable. Wait staff was great! You could really hear their passion and knowledge about the food they make and serve, down to descriptions of menu items, suggestions based on personal taste and preferences, which menu items to match and compliment each other. Collectively, we ordered: -soup dumplings -gong bao chicken -a fancy angus beef and cloud mushroom plate -fried green beans with pork and pickled mustard greens -soup noodles -jasmine rice -cucumber salad -and my personal FAVORITE the freakin Tian Shui Noodles!!!!! Oh my goddddddddd the noodles are thick, long homemade! Cut in house. Served in a garlic chile sesame sauce with sesame seeds and peanuts. I'm drooling and I will be haunted by this dish and want more right now. I'm typing this as we drive back to Gardiner, I'm tempted to turn around and order three to go. Does that sound nuts? Please eat here! Right now. Don't hesitate. Right across from the State Theater on Congress. Go! One other thing I need to say, they saw it was my daughter's birthday and allowed us to have her cake and gifts there. This accommodation was very kind, thank you!

Sooo good! We love Szechuan food and this didn't disappoint! The spice ratings were right on but we didn't go higher than a 3, and the 3 had some major tingling and numbing. The mapo tofu was the best we've ever had, most places don't seem to get it right. Portion sizes were HUGE we had tons of leftovers so the value was great. Food and service was so fast, quality, flavors, just everything hit the mark!

4.5 stars! The flavors are authentically Sichuan, although there was minimal peppercorn flavor, and the owners are from Chengdu. I love the Zhong dumplings, although only 5 came with the order. The Zhong chili sauce is heavenly and the leftovers can be used as a dip for any of the other dishes. If you like a little spice, definitely order them. The tian shui noodles were a bit too al dente. By the time I ate them they were a solid brick that needed to be pried apart. The taste was 7.5/10. But the Zhong sauce from the dumplings saved the noodles. The Angus beef with Sichuan pickled chilis was delicious but way too greasy. I would request low oil next time. Many negative reviews come from people who order pu pu platters and don't have the taste for authentic Sichuan cuisine. Portions were tiny for the price. My one entree and two tiny apps came to over $55 to go including tip and mandatory kitchen tip.

Sichuan Kitchen located in the heart of downtown portland. My girls and I went to taste the menu and here were my thoughts. It's a rather small restaurant serving chinese sichuan cuisine. We went around 5pm and the ambience was okay, it was pretty quiet but I definitely think it'd be pretty in the evening. The service was nice, we got seated promptly and got drinks and food in quickly. However, we did find it a bit strange when one of our plates took much longer than the other two. We had asked our server and he stated that they come fresh out as they finish it. However, when her food did come, it was cold and you could tell it was definitely not fresh off the stove. So it wasn't ideal. The food. The eggplant dish was quite nice, it had minced beef and was doused in a super umami sour sauce. It was a bit too sour than normal but it was overall a 3/5 for me. The hot and sour noodles were pretty good and definitely has that peppercorn Sichuan kick thar eventually numbs your mouth. Noodles were cooked well and flavors were there. The beef/pork bones were nice and flavorful but meat was tough. I think this is a place you should try if you're used to the chinese sichuan intense flavors or if you want to get a brand new taste experience. For me, it wasn't a hit. Overall a rating of 2.5/5 for pricing, portions, taste and service.

Peas & in house made Bacon

Had a great meal here for lunch. Shared an order of the favorable Zhongshan Dumplings and knew this place was a winner. So different that dumplings ordered elsewhere. We each had three dumplings and licked the plate! For lunch I ate the Mapo Tofu - sort of a tummy warming, savory soup/broth with lots flavors and depths! Have to say my tongue was tingling hot, but so worth it! Husband had the Peas & Bacon(made in house) which was bright and fresh, like a dish Grandma would make! The peas had a nice crispness to them and the saltiness of the bacon balanced it wonderfully! The total lunch bill for one soda, dumplings, and two entrees was $55, a bit pricy for lunch, but the servings were huge and your getting two to three meals in each entree. We enjoyed Sechaun Kitchen and will be back.

    cloud ear mushroom salad

Last time I was here I was hoping to get the cold noodles, which was a seasonal dish not quite available yet. Today I came back and had them. They were excellent, though I think, all things considered not as good as the amazing dry fried chicken I had the time before. These noodles are SPICY and so so so good. The sesame flavor is fresh and everything just comes together so well. You have probably not had cold noodles like these anywhere else. I also got the cloud ear mushroom salad which was even more unique to my experience than the noodles. I have never had something quite like this. The texture and taste of the dish is one of a kind. They are not spicy, as the menu says, but they are very, very garlicky, which can come off as spicy beware. As before I did have to sit at the bar, but it wasn't as uncomfortable as last time, and I also didn't feel out of place as there was a couple also at the bar. As I was finishing up, I overheard the table behind me placing their order say "We just want to try everything!" And it's true, there isn't a single item on the menu that doesn't sound incredible. So I'll keep sitting at the bar if that's what it takes. :)

We came in on Saturday night knowing we would have to wait so we went to the bar. They had a special cocktail that night and it was so good I wish I could remember what it was called but you have to try whatever their specialty drink of the night is. Since we had a large party we ordered a lot because everything sounds so good so we did a bunch of Dim Sum and a few mans as well. We went with: Empire Eggrolls Lobster Rangoons Char Siu Baos Spicy Pork Belly Buns Pork Potsticks Shanghai Soup Dumplings Shu Mai Curry Udon Kung Pao Chicken Honestly everything was great but the stand outs for me were the Lobster Rangoons, Char Siu Baos, Pork Potsticks, Curry Udon, and the Kung Pao Chicken. First of Lobster Rangoons I mean how do you not. Portland Maine being Lobster Paradise this just makes sense and is a must try staple here. Just takes your normal Chinese Crab Rangoon to the next level. The Char Siu Baos where the best BBQ Pork Bun I have ever had. I know these can be hit or miss sometimes but Empire it doing it right truly the best I have had. The Pork Potsticks were also great. A top 3 dumpling I have had. I honestly wasn't expecting much but these were amazing. The Curry Udon was kind of a funny story. I said we should try this and my friends like me know it was vegan but for once that didn't bother me. This was great and so full of flavor. Plus you can't go wrong with Udon. Kung Pao Chicken is always my go to and this one takes the cake. The Chicken is lighty battered and so full of flavor. One of the best I have ever had. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything we had at Empire Chinese and I would 100% go back and do it all again. I'll end this review the way we started dinner. Lobsta Goooooonnnnsss!

As a bariatric patient I can't eat too much in one go, so we opted to go with dumplings and drinks, and it was totally the way to go. Drinks: * Strawberry Mojito: sweet, flavorful, and not over powering on the mint. 10/10 from the husband. * Margarita: sour, strong, and they were so wonderful to make it a passion fruit one for me as well. Just a bit small for me. 9/10 Food: * Shanghai soup dumplings: soft and flavorful. Full of filling, but lacking in soup base so it didn't really hit the spot. 7/10 * Steamed pork dumplings: large and in charge! The rice wrapper was a lovely texture but too delicate, resulting in completely falling apart. 8/10 * Garlic bok choy: Converted my husband to actually enjoying bok choy instead of questioning it at every turn. Only wishing it was more garlic forward! 8/10 Go to Empire Chinese Kitchen for a lovely evening out for food or drink! You won't be disappointed.

Their last day of service is 8/31/25 announced recently on their social media accounts. My wife and I knew we needed to make one more trip here and glad to say we got one more visit in! The vibes have been similar over the past couple years during our visits. They have a tropical/island vibe with Asian inspired menu items along with some late night bites. They also do a phenomenal job with cocktails, and I would add mocktails as well which my wife and I each tried one tonight. Looks wise you would not even be able to tell it was non-alcoholic and the flavors were great too. I got their Platonic Best Friend which had a good spice to it, while my wife got the Lack of Meow that she loved. Food wise we each got a Double Patty Burger and split an order of the house fries. Both were just as good as all our other visits and the fries were even more seasoned than normal. We will miss both burgers and fries and especially the dipping sauce that comes with the fries. Lastly we had never tried their dessert and the Maine Blueberry Cake they had sounded so tempting, my wife's favorite fruit is blueberries. We chose the small but comfy wicker chairs at the bar and got glasses of wine - $2 off on happy hour! Our bartender was super sweet and helped us with our order. We got the double smash burger and Szechuan wings with Thai chili sauce on the side. Food came out hella quick. The wings were little but they were so *crispy* and the Szechuan seasoning was tasty and not too overpowering. It was rated as 3 chili peppers on the menu but I didn't really detect any spice. Thai chili was sweet, tangy, solid. Our burger was good. I imagine it's modeled after a Big Mac - had all similar ingredients - just better beef, pickles, etc. It went down easy. I think I was just missing more flavor, maybe a little greasier, something cravable. But hey, if you've been out drinking and you need a late night snack, I guarantee that puppy will hit the spot. Their cocktail menu is an attraction in and of itself. The more you read through it, the more hilarious and charming it is. We will definitely be back to try some of them, especially one of their "party" bowls meant for multiple guests. Love the innovation and playfulness here! Can't wait to return!

It's a tad far from home in North Deering, bit of it's as good as I am hearing, it will be worth the trip. Menu on line was easy to navigate landing me at the "Dinner specials" page. A great variety of, more than some of the other places we've tried and way more than our local Chinese place. I chose the Straw mushroom with snow peas with boneless pork and hubby chose their General Tso chicken with chicken fingers for his appetizer. Both requested the wanton soup which is an upchargw from the other soup offerings. I really like the format for ordering on line with sections for different options like soup, rice, and appetizer. Most places you get the appetizer assigned and charged if you want to change it. Not here, you can choose! Yay! I arrived a few minutes after I was texted my order was ready. Signage was clear and easy to read. Ample parking in the shared parking lot. Upon entering you can see it is a take out centered type restaurant but does offer booth or table seating. It was a busy Saturday night and they had everything operating smoothly. Walked up to counter area and was greeted immediately, gave my phone number and name and my food was presented. Made my payment preference on line which included a tip, made sure to not double tip. Then I was off and running. At home I unpacked the food and was surprised to find the wanton soup was a deep brown color, unusual since most wanton soups are a clear yellow. Large sliced zucchini and carrots accompanied the hand made wanton stars. They had make them with the meat neatly wrapped in dough and remaining dough behind the ball like a shooting star with a tail. WOW! The taste was unique, on the spicy side with a taste of Thai chili sauce swirled in. Very tasty but too hot, my taste buds would have not worked for the rest of my meal. On to the Straw mushroom and snow pea meal with fried rice and boneless pork. Oh My!! So fresh and tasty the peas were numerous as were the mushrooms. Fried rice was excellent as was the boneless pork, it overly cooked and super tender yum! So what are ve heard is true and more. Sadly I could find no delivery options for this establishment so take out it will be.

Well, I hate to have to write this, because we've had a couple of very good meals within the last 6…read moremonths. But I hope my critique will help them improve, at least the last 2 dishes I had. (I won't speak to my husband's meals.) First, the orange chicken, which I had a few weeks ago. It was mostly good. My one criticism (and it's a big one!) is to dial way back on the batter. It should be mostly chicken, with a light, crispy tangy coating. What I had was mostly ALL batter, with little discernible meat inside. Not appealing, and it certainly makes me hesitant to ever order it again. The second bad meal was yesterday. I ordered the chicken with garlic sauce. I was anticipating lovely tender chicken, infused with a delicious fragrant garlic flavor. What I got was tough chicken (that obviously skipped the velveting process) and bland, tasteless sauce. No garlic was present, as far as I could tell. It was the most nondescript Chinese dish I've ever had. And I'm talking eating at Chinatown in Philly and Boston, and all over the U.S. for the last 50 years. Both of these experiences make me feel as though they've given up on trying to do the best they can. And it's also made me decide not to return-at least in the foreseeable future. But I hold out hope that when I decide to give them a third try, it was be as good an experience as I had before these disappointing ones.

Been going to Mekong (or ordering from it, more rarely) for many years and have always had a very…read morepleasant dining experience. The food is consistently quite good. It's never crowded - to the point of often being entirely empty besides myself and my companions - but I think these absent patrons are missing out. Service is sometimes uneven. Despite the lack of other customers, it can still take quite awhile to get served. Standout dishes for me include the drunken noodles and fried rice (I like the one with the salty fish in particular).

The staff were super friendly and the space is really delightful and cozy. There was apparently a big car accident right outside some time ago so city planners take note, just another story that Forest Ave is a horrible street! My friend and I ordered the seafood platter and the pad kee mao. As an apology for the long (was there?) wait time, we got some free veggie Rangoon which was a great little appetizer but super filling. My pad kee mao was perfect -- really nice thick noodles and super mild spice level. Would recommend upping the spice level cause it was quite low! Overall this was a great place to get a dinner meal for under $20 which is unheard of almost.
