Very, very happy to see China Rose in Freeport open their dining room after closing in 2020! Clean, bright and excellent lunch buffet for 12.99 even on weekends. Buffet is fresh and not soggy/sitting. They make just enough to keep it stocked but not so much it sits for long periods. Their green bean with spicy sauce is excellent. Very fresh beans, cooked to perfection. The Family Style Bean Curd (tofu) with vegetables is very tasty and well prepared. They do not add MSG to their food. Two of the best vegetarian Chinese dishes I have had anywhere. Highly recommend. For takeout, the dishes are packed in reusable containers, in a sturdy brown paper bag with cardboard in the bottom to prevent spills. The silverware is compostable. In early June, 2022 China Rose only had takeout-- no dining room seating because of the pandemic. read more

Don't eat here. The food is inedible, literally I had to spit out a lot of it into a napkin. The brown rice was still hard, the pork in the moo she pork was rubbery and gross, the steamed dumplings were like turds wrapped in thick, uncooked dough. I don't think I have ever given such a low rating. The food here had no flavor. None. Zip nada none. Never in my life have I, #1 paid so much for basic Chinese dishes and #2 ever had Chinese food with no flavor. So bland unbelievable to me. I will not go back. Popped into China Rose last weekend whilst doing some Mother's Day shopping at Beans. I'd been here years ago, couldn't really remember my experience, but we wanted chinese before the drive back to Portland. We split appetizers, Crab Rangoon's and Chicken Fingers. Then I had the Sesame Chicken, and the hubby had Orange Chicken. All food came out piping hot and fresh, and QUICK. Granted there were not many parties eating in, but take out was a constant flow. A little boofay China Rose is an attractive and quaint little restaurant that offers a lunch boofay on most days. Not the largest selection of items but the quality of the food is definitely above that of most American Asian types of boofays. The restaurant is small but has room to spread out and has a very pleasant and attractive décor. The service was attentive and very friendly with lots of smiles and laughs. The food was all good but traditional, the stuff you would expect in a boofay. The difference was that the food seemed more flavorful, fresher and tastier than some of the stuff you encounter in boofays with many items. We came in here during a nor'easter as they were one of the only places open for lunch. We were a bit confused at first as to whether we should seat ourselves or wait to be seated, so we opted for the latter to be on the safe side. Once seated, we ordered quickly off the lunch menu. The food arrived so fast! We were served our soups and our veggie roll appetizer. The veggie rolls and their sauce was scrumptious. I enjoyed my wonton soup as well, but my wife didn't care for her egg drop soup. I think it was a personal taste thing more than a soup issue, because I thought it was good. Before we could even finish our soups, our food arrived. I had the orange flavored chicken and pork fried rice, and my wife had the sweet and sour chicken with steamed rice. Both were delicious, but the temperatures were a bit off. Here's was slightly warm and mine was piping hot. I'm assuming hers was cooked first, but it was crazy how much of a difference there was. The portions were great and we each left with a take out box. My wife also had a tequila sunrise, which was probably one of the best mixed drinks I've ever had, and in such an unlikely place. The last thing I feel is of worth noting is the respect for food allergies. The waitress picked up pretty quickly that my wife was trying to avoid pork, and politely informed us of each thing that contained pork when she was ordering so she could pick an alternative. I go here with a group of about 8 to 10 annually when we go to Freeport and it was decent as usual. I don't expect top notch quality but I enjoy the variety. The desserts are pretty sad and no ice cream either. The soups are decent and the honey chicken and general tso's chicken are tasty but definately not quality chicken pieces. Mei fun and fried rice is good. Love their mushrooms though, I add them to my soups and all dishes. Free refills on sodas also. Wasn't too busy and the food was kept full at the buffet. read more

Got an order of "chicken with garlic sauce" which comes with fried rice and a soup for lunch. Both of the rice and soup with the crab rangoons I got along with it were great! The big problem I had with the meal however, was the lack of chicken in the main dish. Now I know that normally these meals come with a lot of veggies that act as filler, but there was hardly ANY chicken and instead was just an entire bowl of chopped carrots with spicy sauce on it. Paying $10 for this meal I was at least hoping for a better portion of chicken. We were originally going to try another place, but it looked like someones house so we left. China Rose was right around the corner so we stopped in. Let me preface by saying there is NOT good Chinese in Boothbay, where I live so we usually like to get some when we can. It smelled great upon walk in, everything Chinese food should smell like. The gentleman that was running the register and seating people was frazzled it appeared so we ended up standing there waiting for 15 minutes as two ladies came up to pay. They told him many times what they had, but there was some sort of block with understanding. Finally got seated. I went for the buffet because I didnt want to be stuck with something I didnt like which can happen. My son ordered off of the menu. I was smart because I would have ordered the honey chicken, but after tasting it on the buffet, Im so glad I didnt. It was just too sweet for me. The food was good, but again slammed buffet so some of the containers werent refilled as timely as maybe they could have been. Also one waitress was using a huge table in the middle of the dinning room as her bus station and setting all of the dirty dishes and trash there, which I thought was odd. I would eat there again, but probably not on a Saturday when everyone and their Aunt Matilda is in Freeport. It filled our want of Chinese so no complaints there. read more

Im gonna say that Chinese Restaurants in Maine are not strong suites. Had the buffet nothing was authentic. It was greasy, limited fresh vegetables, and all of it tasted like it came from Green Giants. One credit I give them is that they did not use Pork in the egg rolls. read more

Disclaimer: The fifth star is because this particular restaurant is not within driving, canoeing, kayaking, or trekking distance of any other very-good Chinese restaurant. It is right next to the really amazing L.L. Bean outlet if you wanted to attempt any of that though. China Rose has all of the comforts of Chinese food from a good, metropolitan Chinatown restaurant, but the benefit (or detriment) of being located next to nothing more than trees and outlets. The food is quite traditional for the Chinese restaurants you might find in Boston's Chinatown, but everything I tried has always been very good. I've only been here once. It was this past Fourth of July and it was about quarter 'til 10. Even on July 4, Freeport rolls up the sidewalks, and we had just come from the festivities at the L.L. Bean campus (The Mavericks! Fireworks!). The China Rose was about to close, yet they seated our party of six and expeditiously brought out drinks and plates upon plates of hot, delicious and fresh food. Fantastic crab rangoons. Perhaps the best-I've-ever-tasted chicken fingers (light, crisp and less greasy than the norm). Top-notch Sesame Chicken -- nothing blazing any trails, but all exceptionally and quickly prepared. I could drink the wanton soup by the gallon it's so good. It's made from fresh chicken stock and had the most delicate dumplings with shredded pork & a little cabbage. I suggest: Hot and sour soup Dumplings Sesame chicken Moo shoo chicken Snow pea pods Chicken lo mein I've been coming here since 1999 (they moved up the street when I was in college) and the soup is still consistently the best. The food wasn't bad but the sauces(pc cups not packets) seemed watered down, that and the fact you need to pick it up through a window in an alley (sign on front door reads pickup out back) really didn't help.
