We got take out for china star and we were wanting the egg drop soup, they said they would have to charge extra just because there cups were too big. So we could have came in sat down and got normal prices so we had to pay more. The rice needed a lot of flavor, and the shrimps too and there was barely any shrimp. In the egg drop soup we found these weird blob things and they tasted like goop, not egg drop soup goop, just weird goop. When you get take out, the servings are huge, which isn't bad. When my school brought china star to us, we got white rice which was very very bland, and we found a dead bug! We also got panned fried pot stickers and in my opinion I would think they could be cruncher but that's only my opinion. read more

One night we went in and ordered for takeout, my wife asked to get Shrimp Chow Mein. They asked if we would like the crispy noodle and she said yes. When we got home we just found a container of cabbage with some kind of sauce and shrimp, thinking oh they somehow forgot the noodle. We called the restaurant and spoke with the chef and he said that the wonton strips are the crispy noodles. I'm sorry what? Last time I checked wonton strips are wonton strips... Not sure why they are advertising something as a chow mein with crispy noodles but it being something totally different is false advertising to me. There was no apology, no asking if we'd like something different instead, just more of an it is what it is kind of attitude, which was disappointing. It looks like I'm not the only one who has had this issue based on some other reviews so I'm not sure why they still offer it on the menu. read more

I came to China Star for the first time in years today, drawn in by a sign advertising Hibachi posted in the lawn in front of the reataurant's parking area. Curious to see what that meant, I entered the restaurant at lunch time and was quickly seated. I found that the hibachi was one of the menu options, featuring a Japanese style cuisine at a higher price point than the traditional American style Chinese food which dominates the menu. I decided to try one of the lunch specials and chose the twice cooked pork along with jasmine tea to drink. The meal started with a bowl of soup for which I chose hot and sour. For me, it wasn't spicy enough and could have used a little more kick. But the flavor was pretty good. Also, it came with some deep fried strips of dough with a sweet red dipping sauce as a starter. Those weren't super tasty, kinda oily and not too appetizing. The main course was served with ham fried rice and as a side, I chose the silver chicken over the egg roll. The twice cooked pork was flavorful and had some nice fresh veggies in it including snow peas, green pepper, onion, mushrooms, carrots and zucchini. Pretty healthy for a quick lunch, especially at the same price one might pay for fast food. Overall I was quite content with my meal and consider it as having been a good value. I guess I'll put China Star back on my list for a place to go for a satisfying lunch in Bountiful. read more

The service is amazing. The owners are so sweet and kind. I love supporting this local restaurant! They are a great addition to our community! Not to mention The food is delicious and fresh. Who's buying this, even boomers won't like it. First time ordering take out. WTF. Mongolian chicken has no flavor and texture of the chicken is gross, per description it says it's spicy but there's barely any salt in the dish let alone spice, just no. Chicken chow mein does not have flavor and again chicken texture is gross, adding ur own soy sauce does nothing. Steamed potstickers have super thick dough, like Russian vareniki or something and the filling is dense and not flavored, orange peel chicken is the only thing that's flavored and even then the taste of the old oil overpowers the orange. We have ordered from China Star in the past and have never had an issue with the exception of the other evening. I placed a delivery order at 4:37 pm hoping to avoid the Valentines Day rush. I was told it would be delivered in 45 minutes. 2 hours later I called the restaurant and was told it should be delivered soon. An hour later our order arrived. I ordered crispy noodles and was given a pasty-white slop of soggy cabbage and some meat (pork?) the receipt called it pork chow mein, but let me reiterate there were no noodles involved in this atrocity of a dish. I'll pretty much eat anything from a Chinese restaurant, but this is bad. Ordered some food to be delivered and my steamed rice was not included. I had to make my own rice which takes a long time to make. I have a newborn and the whole point of take out is to not have to make your own meal. Pretty irritated about it. read more

The silver wrapped chicken was like eating a chunk of salt. The potstickers were not good. The pork lo mein was good as well as the shrimp foo young. The egg drop soup had no vegetables i.e peas or corn. The ham fried rice had very little ham. Next time I will try china plater or joy luck. read more

This places is a hidden gem, I love it, their food is well done prepare and delicious, all the appetizers are incredible, their favor is super good if we compare to other Chinese places I live in Provo but every time I am around this place or even few miles away, I go there to eat Sadly because of COVID, they just have to go order. Now: We grabbed a meal to-go tonight and I had to write this review after eating. Ordered Chicken chow-main: very little chicken, lots and lots of bok-choy ( I hate that stuff!) I believe chow-main should be made with celery, sprouts, and oh yea chicken. The crunchy noodles were deep fried one-ton skins fried in old maybe overused oil. Ordered general tso chicken, chicken seamed like it had lots of fat or it was lots of breading and in a vinegar laden sauce, nor spicy! wheres the heat? I was hesitant to order due to a few reviews, but it's cheaper than our usually go to and I had to know if it was as good. It was better! Usually authentic Chinese is less flavorful, but this was shockingly full of flavor. I am super confused by a review I read that said everything tasted the same. They must have ordered similar things because each thing we had was so uniquely flavorful. We had Mongolian Beef, which was spicey and had a peppery flavor. My picky eater (who never eats Chinese unless the chicken is plain) loves it! The Kung Pao was perfect and hot. I'm not used to Chinese food being hot. They say it is, but to this SoCal native, it's not at all. Each of the dishes we got said it was hot and each was. Next time I'll order something that's not hot to go along with the hot dishes because it was a lot. We also got General Tsaos, which was slightly sweet and just enough heat. The sauce was great. My only complaint is the amount of onions in the Mongolian and Kung pao dishes (I usually enjoy onions, so maybe it was just unexpected) but my husband said he liked that. Even with all the veggies, though, there was still a lot of chicken and I didn't feel ripped off. The foil wrapped chicken had a strong soy sauce flavor, enhanced by other flavors. The hot and sour soup jumped to a top spot on our list of favorites for everyone in the family. I'm pretty excited to find this place and try other dishes later! We ordered from Grub Hub. Delivery was great. We got a call from the restaurant as soon as we ordered, asking if we wanted them to bring it now, since they had time, or if we wanted to wait for the time we had been scheduled for. We had chosen that time on purpose, so kept it, but it was nice to have communication. We drove from Taylorsville to see what was the big deal. WOW was I pleasantly surprised . My bf can eat at least 10lbs of food ... hollow legs, (if you know what I mean.) The amount of food was extra large & not expensive, plus it tasted great!! This is a family run operation, so small humans can be seen, and they are adorable, funny, and helpful too. Side Story: The day we went was overcast, but soon after arriving the sun was out and came through the window, through that extra large fish tank, & created several rainbows . 1. Placed our order online at 3:30 for a pickup time of 6:00. When we arrived to pick it up After taking 10min to try and find our order She finally finds it. Then we don't walk out of there with our food until 6:48. 2. I put, in capital letters, in the special instructions on each dish: NO ONIONS/ ALLERGY. And again in the notes section before placing order. Onions in all the dishes. 3. Ham fried rice, white rice with no ham, no eggs, just peas and carrots. 4. When we were handed our order the bags were tied shut and there was no place to check it. When we got home we discovered two dishes missing. 5. When I tried to call back the phone number didn't work. 6. When I drove back to get my missing food it took 15 minutes to get help. 7. When I got back home with my "fixed order" the sweet and sour chicken (which was one of the missing items) had no sauce. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

This review is written from the perspective of someone who ordered takeout, not dine-in or delivery. When I called the restaurant, the man who picked up was cordial and polite. He took my order quickly and promised me that the food would be ready in a matter of 20 or so minutes. I ordered a bowl of Hot and Sour Soup, Pan Fried Pot Stickers, Fried Rangoons, General Taos Chicken, Pork Lo Mein, Orange Peel Beef, Sesame Chicken, Three Ingredients, Mushroom Duck, and Walnut Shrimp. I know this is an absurd amount of food for one person but I like to sample a variety of dishes when trying a new place. Lo and behold when I arrived at the store 20 ish minutes later, the entire takeout order was ready and packed up for me quite neatly. It included 2 things of steamed rice, 2 complimentary veggie egg rolls (which were good), and a large bundle of utensils and napkins which was very thoughtful. LONG STORY SHORT: The food is overall good. I would argue that personally it's my favorite Chinese-American spot in the area. I've done a review for the Mandarin if you're concerned that I haven't tried that location yet. Below will be details regarding each dish that I had ordered. (**Means they were my favorite dishes) Hot and Sour Soup: Tasted pretty good. Had a little spice and sour which is great considering that's the name of the soup. What was really refreshing for me was that it was full of tasty ingredients like tofu, eggs, pieces of meat, etc. My personal gripe with it was the inclusion of water chestnuts but that's just a me thing. Pan Fried Pot Stickers: Good flavor, quite meaty. Dipping it in the included sauce gave it a great savory-sweet taste. My only complaint was that it's a little doughy and oily but certainly not a deal breaker. **Fried Rangoons: The filling was delicious and just what you'd expect from a crab rangoon. The filling to wonton ratio was good and it didn't feel overpriced. General Taos Chicken: I will claim that they have the best General Taos Chicken in the area. It had all of the right flavors and the fact that there were actual red peppers inside of the dish renewed my faith in the Bountiful/Woods Cross/North Salt Lake Chinese-American food scene. My complaint about this dish, however, was that I wish the breading was a bit more crispy. It came to me a little mushy. Pork Lo Mein: Not much to say here, it was good and not overcooked. Add some soy sauce and you're golden. **Orange Peel Beef: Surprisingly tender! It tasted great and wasn't overly sweet. My surprise was due to the fact that Chinese-American cooking of beef usually leads to it becoming a bit chewy for my taste. Sesame Chicken: Sweet and mild. Portioning is great, however it has the same issue as the General Taos Chicken - slightly mushy. Maybe the secret is to ask for the chicken to be cooked extra crispy? Three Ingredients: The garlic sauce on this is quite delicious and it is spicy, but not overbearing. The shrimp in this mix of meat is the highlight, and the vegetables weren't overcooked. Mushroom Duck: Also Great, the duck retained its own unique flavor and wasn't overpowered by the surrounding sauce. The veggies here were also cooked well and weren't mushy (as some places do). Walnut Shrimp: Had a little bit of a crisp and the sauce was done perfectly. Broccoli was sweet and had a good bite. Just what you'd expect from good walnut shrimp. If I ever have a hankering for Chinese-American and don't feel like going too far from my house, China Star will likely be my go-to spot. read more

Not to mention none of the food was soggy or anything. I'm known for dragging my friends from Salt Lake to Bountiful to get China Star for lunch. They have the best egg drop soup I've ever tried, and their portions are huge for the cost! I would recommend dining in, it's usually a quiet lunch and they'll give you much more food than if you order out. The service is a nice balance, attentive but they leave you alone and let you eat. Take my advice, get the egg drop soup and add a little soy sauce and sweet and sour. You won't regret it read more

Every once in awhile we're in the mood for Chinese and those "every-once-in-awhiles" turn into disappointment. I don't know why it took us so long to try out our local China Star. We finally found our go-to spot to satisfy our craving in this quaint little town. I ordered online which was super easy (tons of menu options AND they have Pad Thai which might be the only place north of SL that makes it...LOL) and the wait time for an order looked to be about 20 minutes. I pushed out our pickup time about 45 minutes and they had it hot and ready to go upon our arrival. The lady that gave us our order was super nice and welcoming--a BIG deal. The helpings are HUGE--easily three meals for me, and the flavors are spot-on. We ordered the dinner combos of Orange Chicken and General Tsao's Chicken. They each came with a spring roll, fried shrimp, and rangoon. The fried shrimp had more breading on it than I prefer, but everything else was cooked fabulously. We will definitely stop by China Star the next time that our craving comes around, and would totally consider bringing family to dine-in sometime. read more

My food was Eh. Ordered general Taos chicken, which didn't even have any spice to it, pretty bland. Only came with one crab wanton. Most places give at least 2. But my soup was good! I had egg drop soup. I ordered a side of Sriracha sauce with the soup and as I was walking out I asked him if the sauce was in the bag and he said yes, checked when I got home and there wasn't any in there! Oh and my one crab wanton didn't even come with a packet Of sweet and sour. I was really excited to try this place. Portions, portions, and more portions. While many Chinese food restaurants offer large portions, China Star offers large portions with tons of flavor and yum. We found ourselves at China Star by chance; we were in the area and all the other top ranked restaurants were too busy, so we decided on the China Star. I am so glad we did. The over all look of the restaurant is very stereotypical of a affordable sit down Chinese restaurant. There is a big fish tank in the front, sushi bar in the back and tables and booths through out. We were greeted with a smile and pronto service to the table. I started the meal with the hot and sour soup, which was decent, not great/ not bad. Following the soup, we ordered three entrées. We tried the Vegetable Lo Mein, which was delicious. The noodles were tasty and the perfect mix of flavored. The Orange Peel Chicken, which was good, but a little too bitter. But the best thing was the Walnut Shrimp. Oh yeah, it was good. I highly recommend this sweet mix of walnuts, broccoli and shrimp. It was perfect. All and all a great meal that we will enjoy for lunch at home the tomorrow with all the left overs. read more

Went in around 3 on a Friday. The restaurant was empty besides my party. There were several tables that weren't cleaned off yet (no excuse for that as it was not busy). The location was not well lit or overly welcoming. Kind of a run down version of what would have been standard for a smaller Chinese food place when it originally opened. The food itself was not very good. It's not the worse Chinese food that I've had but certainly not even average. When you have better choices near by I see no need to go to somewhere like this. read more

I thought a lot about what number to put on this review. I'll share my feedback for your edification. You can decide whether you think it's the right place for you to eat: I ordered delivery. There was no silverware and I ordered items that required a fork and spoon to eat. Staying at a hotel but wasn't easy to track them down under COVID restrictions with no food service. I ordered egg rolls. I received spring rolls. I've never ordered Chinese food which was delivered in Styrofoam so this was a first. Made the fried sweet and sour chicken come out soft and mushy. However, it appears they recently changed management because the food and service have both become more consistent, along with other notable changes to interior decor and take out packaging. I'd say five, but there are better chinese joints in the area for the money. They come in 10% high on cost vs. market, but the food is solid and I've been back a few times with friends and family. Now, comparing cost to decor and service, I'd say they balance out pretty nicely. They have a good looking set-up (and fat koi) with well dressed and manor'ed staff.
