China Star is our go to Chinese food spot. Ive tried most of the Chinese food spots around me and this one is currently the best. Their house special fried rice is exactly how it should be. Lots of different meats and the perfect brownish color. We usually order Hunan beef or beef and broccoli and its always good. Our kids always get sweet and sour chicken and they love it every time. Their egg rolls and egg drop soup are really good. This place also gets the meal done fast. Normally its 15-20 minutes and the food is ready. If you are ever in the Dunedin area and want some take out Chinese food this is the place to go to. Its a 4 star place but Im leaving 5 stars to balance out the 1 star reviews. However, it was absolutely loaded with onions which were good but there was 8 small pieces of chicken. When I say small I mean 3/4" in length by 1/2" wide. I was really bummed. The pork fried rice is average maybe a little better than average and the pan fried dumplings are very good. They give you a large portion and it comes with a very tasty dipping sauce. I arrived a few minutes before 3 so there was still time for the lunch special. I ordered orange chicken with fried rice and an egg roll for $6. Hungry, I ordered a whole lot, especially with the price differences. Boneless ribs, great sauce, perfect texture. Dumplings, perfectly cooked, thin-skinned and filled with tasty. Broccoli in garlic sauce, my friend added tofu. I liked it, but I'd rather it just be the broccoli. Lo Mein, great noodles, veggies weren't overcooked. Fried rice... hated it. Weird, right? How can you do everything else right, but suck at the fried rice? I chose the white rice instead; that had more flavor than the fried rice. I live in Dunedin, and China Star has been my go to Chinese take-out, for about 8 years now. I'm giving them 5 STARS because for take-out Chinese food, it's excellent! It's nothing fancy, in fact it resembles the typical take-out that is found almost anywhere. The reason for the 5 STARS is, consistency of quality food and service. There really is no guess work here, regardless of day or time, although when they are really busy (like today, Christmas 22') give them a little extra time, and you'll be happy. It's take-out Chinese, and within this context it's tops; but it is not to be compared with Asian fine dining, or even P.F. Chang's, which really belong in a separate category and will cost significantly more $$$. China Star...my suggestion: House Egg Foo Young w/ gravy and steamed rice...yummy! read more

One star is being generous. I ordered through GrubHub, who delivered my food to the wrong address! Since I just moved in, I don't know my neighbors yet; nevertheless, my neighbor across the street deduced where the food was meant to be and brought it over. I almost wis he hadn't. It was one of the worst meals I've ever had (what I could eat of it). I ordered: 1. Dumplings (I think they were meant to be fried, but it merely seemed to be regular Dumplings that had been left out several days so that their skins were pale but hard and dried out - not soft, not crispy. The filling was actually pretty good... it's too bad you had to go through the brittle skin to get to it! You have to pay extra for dipping sauces. I tried the Chili Sauce, a little sweet but good and another Sauce, which was nondescript. 2. Shrimp Shumai that had a weird consistency and tasted very fishy. 3. An inedible Hot and Sour Soup. No real flavor (only salty). Maybe I can add some Beef Broth, Bamboo Shoot Matchsticks, Granulated Garlic, Toasted Sesame Oil, Rice Vinegar, Scallions and Chili Flakes To doctor it up. 4. Fried Rice: there were no options through GrubHub's menu, so I asked on the comment section for added Shrimp (which WAS available for the Lo Mein. But I got a call from the restaurant saying they couldn't do that as the rice was prepackaged. The little carton that arrived was overcooked, oily, and completely flavorless. I repurposed it by sautéing a medium finely diced Onion, a clove of minced Fresh Garlic, 1/2 small seeded Jalapeño Pepper, then adding the Old Rice. I pan fried an Egg beaten with Tarragon, then cut it into small squares and tossed them into Rice Mix, then added a dozen or so Frozen Raw Medium Shelled Tail-Less Shrimp and 1/4 C Chicken Broth and stir fried until Shrimp turn pink. Then I sprinkled on Finely Sliced Cilantro and Scallions, then seasoned with some Silk Road Japanese Togarashi and Toasted Sesame seeds. All that made it edible, although I could still tell the Rice itself was overcooked! 5. Sesame Rice Balls: inedible. even the dog wouldn't eat them! The Bean Paste was insipid and the Rice Balls were hard and chewy. I couldn't think of a way to save them, so I threw them out. 6. I almost forgot the Seaweed Salad: WAY too oily and lacking in flavor. Once I added some Rice Wine Vinegar, Sushi Seasoning, a little Fish Oil and a bit of Togarashi, it was OK. I was in the process of moving from out of State, and I'm 71 years old. When I ordered out, it was for convenience and to take a break from moving things in - I didn't expect to have to go through so much to end up with an edible meal! Best Chinese Take Out in Tampa Bay I love this place. It has all of the same menu items as everyone else, except theirs are super delish. It's fresh, light and generous portions. I will eat here at least once a week. The kitchen is open and you can see how clean and free from that stench of old oil. Even the steamed rice was fresh instead of old and dried out.
